What's the difference between weaking the screen and icing it ? Is it just like a middle ground type of screen defense ?

Very interesting as always.

ice means you want the ball handler to move away from the screener

I've never heard of weaking before but GT explains it as wanting the ball handler to go to his less dominant hand (weak hand). So they're definitely not the same thing, though they can have the same effect

Icing forces ball handler away from the screen no matter what.

Weaking the screen attempts to force ball handler to his weak hand whether its by soft hedging or icing the screen, depends on the ball handler's dominant hand and direction of screen setter.

You guys pretty much nailed it, but to put it another way:

Ice = Do not let the ball handler use the screen under any circumstances (usually on side PnR)

Weak = It's okay to let him use the screen if he's going left, but not okay if he's going right. (usually on high PnR)

And another spot on pronunciation on Nogueira.

And I'm sooo with you that we're switching hilariously too much. It's really baffling, I hate it. We're switching every off ball screen or rub, like we're playing the Warriors every game

Yeah the main distinction for "weak" is that you call it up top when it's not clear which sideline is closer to force the defender to. Some coaches will still weak a left handed player to the left in order to be consistent with the way the team defends the top and avoid confusion.

The way they're switching is bothering me as well. Another problem with it is that when you switch and play it soft like Randle tends to do, the effect is similar to going under a screen - the guard will just shoot the open three like Beverly did in the Houston game.

That was a bit above my head, but very interesting.

I really appreciate learning about these kinds of things because I get tired of hearing (on TV etc) that defense is *solely*a matter of effort.
