Thumped Again… With the return of the Lakers starting guard duo, there was a little more hope for a turnaround against the Knicks.

D’Angelo Russell was clearly rusty and on limited minutes. Nick Young contributed, but the Laker defense was still MIA.

Kristaps Porzingis dominated the game with a career-high 7 blocks (and many more alterations) to go along with 26 points on the other end. The Lakers might have survived that but they let Rose and Jennings go off for a combined 44 points.

Once again, the Lakers were on their heels defensively to start the game and never seemed to get over that. (Personally, I’d like to see some more deliberate trapping and blitzing early in the game just to try to set the tone for the first few minutes. Then back off that and mix it up as the game goes along.)

“It’s tough to win when we don’t get stops,” Luke said. After committing 8 turnovers in the third quarter, the Lakers would score 37 points in the third, only to give up 34. They fell 118-112.

The Lakers have dropped 6 straight games and now leave on a week-long road trip.

“I’m hopeful and confident that we will stick together and get through this,” Luke said.

Russell -- -- He was rusty out of the gates, which is to be expected. He was on a minutes restriction, so just played a single stint in each half. He couldn’t hit a shot in the first half, but was setting up teammates under control. “In the first half we did a better job just making the simple play,” Luke said. He mentioned the risk reward was a little too high some passes later in the second half as Russell got several turnovers in the third quarter (one or two were on Mozgov not being ready for passes…one literally hitting him in the arm while he looked up at the rim). But the ball was ending up out of bounds again and again off his passes. Not pretty. Luke also mentioned Rose getting hot early. “You got to make them feel you,” he said of the physicality of the Laker D. I think Rose made his first eight shots of the game. “I let DRose get off to a quick start and other guys followed up behind and I got to do a better job,” he said of the D. He mentioned their focus was really on Melo in this game, so I’m wondering if they got caught off guard by some of the others. “A lot of players we weren’t expecting to step up, stepped up,” Russell said of the Knicks. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-8 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 5 assits, 4 turnovers, 2 steals, and no fouls in 16:38. He was a -6. The Action: He was blocked on a turnaround in the post. Way short on a quick-fire wing jumper. He found Nick in transition for the short jumper. He missed a wing three. He missed a pull-up at the FT line. He missed a wing three out of a timeout. He was 0-5 but had 3 assists. Second Half: He threw a pass out of bounds when a big didn’t expect it. Sloppy pass out of bounds trying to hit Nick in the corner, turnover. Another pass out of bounds on the break a few seconds later (forced it late in transition), turnover. Wild shot in the paint, expecting a foul call that never came. He was blocked on a layup. He deflected a pass on one end, then hit the three on a 4-on-1 break the other way. He missed across the lane, got it back and couldn’t get the shot off before the clock expired.

Randle -- -- “We got to buckle down and get stops,” Randle said, mentioning he was embarrassed by the Lakers allowing 116 points a game in this losing streak. “We just got to lock in, get stops and be smart, not put teams on the foul line.” He said he thinks he can be a lot more vocal during those stretches when the game is on the line in the fourth. I’d like to see that then. I’d like to see that at the start of the game. Worth said after the game, it’s lip service until they actually put it on the court. I haven’t agreed with a lot of things Worthy has said lately, but that’s the truth. Randle did a decent job scoring in the paint in this one despite having to deal with Porzingis. I think if he played him more, he’d learn to be a little more physical. He cut down on the turnovers with just one in this game (a really wild lob pass on the break). So it wasn’t without a couple of bonehead, youngster plays like we’ve seen a lot of. Defensively, I wished he was more aggressive on the perimeter. We were too soft tonight again and paid the price. When he got down in that defensive stance and battled against Melo on a switch, he looked great. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 7-12 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 4 assists, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He hit a jumphook in the middle of the paint. He was blocked on a drive right. He sank a pull-up 17-footer. He hit Clarkson on the break for a score. He blew a layup muscling his way past a man to his left. He powered in an And-1 layup off the pocket pass from Lou in the middle of the paint, he made the FT. He missed a pull-up across the lane. He bullied his way from the elbow to score over Porzingis. Excellent D on Melo to shut him down on an iso D sequence. He then pushed out the break and threw away a wild lob pass. He swished a floater in the lane at the buzzer. He had 11 points, 6 boards and 3 assists. Second Half: He was blocked on the finish at the rim. He grabbed an offensive board and hit the And-1 jumphook, he made the FT. He and Williams trapped in the backcourt, they came up with it and Lou hit Julius for the layup. Poor foul on the other end in transition on a perimeter reach to give up FTs. He drew FTs on an interior feed, he made one.

Young -- -- Good to see him back on the floor, picking up somewhat where he left off. Having him and Russell allows us to not play Huertas or Calderon, which is important. But it also takes a lot of burden off our bench guards. Hopefully, D will start picking it up now that he’s returned. I thought he was a little wild on some of his threes, not taking high percentage shots there. Other than that, offensively, good to have his scoring punch back in the lineup (and having an alternative to Clarkson who’s been slumping). The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-11 shooting (1-6 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 4 boards and 2 fouls in 20:27. He was a +0. The Action: He missed a wing three. He battled for an offensive board, pulled it out and hit the corner jumper. He sank a short pull-up wing jumper in early offense. He missed a three from the top of the arc. He curled down the lane to his right and scored the layup with his left around the help D. He didn’t hit rim on a wing three. He spun to lose his man and hit the floater in the lane. He sank a pull up at the top of the key, coming off a screen. He up-faked, got a man in the air and threw it up to earn three FTs, he made two. He had 12 points on 5-8 shooting and 4 boards. Second Half: He swished an open wing three on a kickout. He missed a three from the top of the arc. He didn’t hit iron on a three out of a timeout.

Mozgov -- -- Pretty much a nothing game from Mozgov. I think he wasn’t used to playing with a guard looking for him again, because he certainly was not looking for passes and that caused issues. He and Noah could have just mutually agreed not to play and the game would have looked better for it. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 1 block and 2 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a jumphook in post. He blocked a reverse. He lost the ball on a baseline drive. Second Half: He faked left, went right and hit the lefty jumphook. He was blocked or fouled on a turnaround attempt, not close. He scored a layup off the two-man game with Deng. Russell hit him in the arm on the break, Mozgov never looking for the pass and it cost us easy points. Soft finish attempt and he was blocked.

Deng -- -- Man, can’t believe we wasted Deng’s best game of the year. The arch on his shot looked good from the start and had an 8-point first quarter with a couple of threes. He didn’t just stop at one good quarter or one good half. He actually put together a complete game. “He’s going to find his groove, and a lot of that is on us to continue to move the ball and get him shots in rhythm,” Luke said. The shots weren’t short tonight, they weren’t frozen ropes and the results followed. Some good defense on Melo, as well. If we could just 75% of this one on a regular basis, that would go a long way for the team. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 8-13 shooting (5-8 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover, 2 steals and 1 foul in 32 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He sank a wing three behind a Randle screen. He sank a wing three from the other side. He missed his next attempt from three. Quick first step baseline and he powered in the layup. He deflected a lob pass to ignite the break. He missed a challenged pull-up from the elbow. Second Half: He swished a jumper at the top of the key coming off a screen. He sank a step-back three on his next touch. He hit Mozgov off the two-man game for a layup. He swished a high arching wing three over Porzingis. He threw a pass away after a good recovery by Porzingis. He missed a three from the top of the key on a rare two-man sequence with Russell. He missed a turnaround in the paint. He sank the three off the kickout from Lou. He busted out on the break with Ingram and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He missed a wing three, this one too flat.

Williams -- -- You could really see Porzingis causing Lou issues in this one, thus the 5 turnovers in his statline. I think that made it a little tough for the second unit to really turn the game around like they had been when the team (as a whole) has been healthy. They want the other team taking the ball out of the hoop vs. pushing back on them off turnovers. They won’t see that kind of defensive impact again in the next one, so let’s see if they can’t get back on track. Another big scoring game from Lou still, great job getting to the line again and making every shot. The Stats: He scored 24 points on 6-13 shooting (2-7 from three, 10-10 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 5 assists, 5 turnovers, 2 steals and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He was stripped on a drive in early offense. He up-faked and blew past his man for a layup. He hit Randle on the two-man sequence for an And-1. He missed the drifting two-for-one three attempt. He swiped a pass on the other end, ran clock, thought he drew the reach foul on a three but didn’t get the call. He curled off the weakside screen and Nance found him for the dunk (I want to see that play again). He cut backdoor and Nance found him for the layup with a bounce pass. He drew FTs on the attack across the lane, he made both. Inside-out dribble to blow by his man in early offense and he scored the layup. He missed a three. He drew FTs on a perimeter reach and sank both. He had 12 points on 4-7 shooting. Second Half: He missed a deep three. He threw a pass away attacking the paint. He attacked and was blocked on a drive. He was stripped trying to split defenders, turnover on our first play of the fourth. He drained a wing three. He attacked to his left, drew the reach foul and went up to draw FTs, he made all three. He was blocked on a drive. He hit Nance in the paint for a dunk. He threw it away in the paint. He couldn’t connect with Nance on the pocket pass. He hit Deng for the open three. He drew FTs on a three in the corner, he made all three. He sank a deep three in the final seconds. He didn’t hit on another deep three in the final seconds.

Clarkson -- -- He settled into this game more offensively. I think with Young and Russell back, he didn’t try to do too much and that helped him. He looked most effective on the right baseline on jumpers or hitting his little jumphook/one hander we see from about 5 feet. It’s certainly better than the left side. From the left corner he’s 1-14 this year. He’s 4-25 from that left baseline to the left corner three. Awful. From the right side, he’s 5-13 from the midrange on that baseline. That’s his best spot on the floor. He needs to play to that strength more. Also, hopefully, with less work from him offensively, he’ll start digging in more like we saw earlier this season defensively. “We just got to figure it out on the defensive end and do it fast,” Clarkson said. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 6-10 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 4 assists, no turnovers and 1 foul in 32 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He rattled in a baseline pull-up jumper. Quick leak out and Randle hit him ahead of the pack for the And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He missed a three on an inbounds (take a little more time when you have it). The ball stopped in his hands, he iso’d and clanked the off-balance pull-up. He sank a baseline pull-up jumper off the two-man sequence with Randle. Second Half: He attacked to his right and hit the little one-hander on the baseline. He couldn’t finish over Porzingis on the drive. He picked up his dribble in a tough spot, was blocked, got it back and up-faked a man in the air for FTs, he made both. He attacked down the middle of the lane to his left and scored a layup. He airballed or threw it away in the paint on a drive right. Great job tipping in a miss from behind Melo in the final minute to cut it to 4.

Ingram -- -- One of those 1 for X games shooting again. He made his first shot, then missed his next 7. His best play in this one was a push on the break with speed where he fed Deng for the score. Some decent moments again Melo defensively, but we didn’t want to leave him on an island when those two matched up. Ingram doesn’t quite have the strength yet. He fouled out late in the game taking an intentional foul. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-8 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists and 6 fouls in 25:40. He was a -8. The Action: His man sagged off him so he swished the wing three. He looked fouled on a pull-up jumper, no call and he missed. Out of control on a drive, he was stuffed badly and it led to points the other way. He missed a three. Second Half: He missed a challenged pull-up on an iso. He drew an offensive foul on Melo, who tried to hold him in the post-up. He missed an open sideline three. He pushed out the break with speed and fed Deng for the And-1 layup. He was blocked by Porzingis on an iso drive (no chance with Brandon’s limited finishing skills right now in his career). Not close on a baseline pull-up.

Nance -- -- Some excellent passing sequences to Lou in this game that led to scores. Really, other than that passing not a real strong performance. Solid, but not imposing his athleticism on the game. He even passed on trying to finish at the rim over a smaller defender, if I recall, to kickout for a three (which we did hit). Just want to see more aggressiveness from him on both ends. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-5 shooting to go with 2 offensive boards, 3 assists, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He couldn’t finish the lefty layup off a late screen on the weave. He hit Lou under the hoop cutting off a screen for a dunk. He popped out and hit the 21-footer. He found Lou between defenders with a bounce pass as he backdoored his man for a layup. Second Half: He deflected a pass in the lane. He missed a baseline jumper. Early offense post up on Melo and he hit the jumphook over him. It looked like he got blocked off an offensive board. He dunked next time down when Lou found him.

Robinson -- -- We run a play with Ingram quickly changing directions and kicking back to Lou, who then works behind the screen of a bigman to completely free him up. That was run to perfection tonight with a pick that Robinson set, just taking out the defender completely. Haven’t seen it run that well all season, even though it’s been an effective set for us. Reasonable game from Robinson tonight, but we didn’t get much defensive impact (other than doing decently on the boards like he does). If we’re going small defensively, we just need to be more aggressive with guards on the perimeter to really make that work. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-3 shooting (0-1 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 10:41. He was a +4. The Action: Quick first step from the top of the arc to explode past his man and score a layup. He missed a hook across the lane. Second Half: He threw an outlet away. Quick attack to his right down the lane and he scored the And-1 layup before hitting the ground, he missed the FT.

Walton -- -- He got some bodies back and now needs to jumpstart the team again. The Lakers trailed 19-14 when the timeout came midway through the quarter. Rose going off early… Clarkson in for Nick out of that … Lou and Nance in… The Lakers led 24-23 when the timeout came shortly later… Ingram now in for Deng… The Lakers trailed 32-30 after the first quarter… Robinson in for Randle to start the quarter… They drew up a dunk for Lou to start the second quarter off a nice play call… Down 3, Randle back in for Robinson... Timeout down 7, he brought in Deng, Young and Mozgov… No Russell to close the half… They trailed 57-56 at the half… Turnover prone play by Russell… Lakers were down 1 midway through the quarter when Young sat for Clarkson… Down 4 when Lou, Nance and Ingram came in for Russell, Mozgov and Deng… Robinson in for Randle with 2 minutes left, down 4 still… A 12-0 run by the Knicks… The Lakers had 8 turnovers in the third… They trailed 84-75 heading into the fourth… The Lakers trimmed it to 1 before Porzingis returned. They took the lead a moment later with 8 minutes left… The Knicks went on a run, getting D by Porzingis and hot guard shooting from Jennings… Down 5 with 2:35 when the timeout came… The Lakers couldn’t reel them in…

"He and Noah could have just mutually agreed not to play and the game would have looked better for it."

You're saying that about 2 guys that just got paid 130M+ combined.

Thanks DB. Lets hope the Lakers recapture that mojo they started the season with, now that they have their starters back. We could really use Black out there; hopefully Robinson can fill that void until he returns.

Really could have used this win before the long road trip. Hopefully Dlo gets back up to speed and shakes off that rust quick.

The loosing streak is disappointing. But thinking about how competitive the Lakers have been without some key players and with generally poor play - and I'm hopeful for the future.

Student (Young Players) Report Card (as of today)

* They still have many bad habits to break

* Haven't yet fully embraced Luke's system

* JC is a very talented star, not a Superstar

* Randle has potential if he embraces what is being taught in his future lessons

* Deng is having problems coming even remotely close to providing the anticipated leadership and production

* Ingram is slowly but surely developing

Laker fans that wanted the young players play through their bumps in the road are getting their wish
