Flatlining… Hard to enjoy a massive poster job jam by Nance when you drop your eighth straight and a game that was there for the taking.

Nance threw down that monster dunk in the third quarter and hoped it would help spark the team. It helped the cause, but when the Lakers needed to make their freethrows, they didn’t. When they needed a big three, they missed. When they needed to get stops, they couldn’t.

The Lakers had just 3 assists in the first half, going without a field goal for nearly 9 minutes in the second quarter. Despite that, they took the lead heading into the fourth. Still, the missed freethrows and the inability to get stops caught up with them. The offense then flatlined again and the Nets went on a 12-3 run over the last 6 minutes.

Nick Young said Luke called the team out afterward, saying they’re playing soft.

“Little moments in the game where I felt we could have got some distance that we casually approached,” said the frustrated Luke.

The Lakers fell 107-97. The Nets kept the door open all night long and the Lakers couldn’t push through it.

“The losses hurt,” Luke said. “They’re frustrating, but it’s the fact that we haven’t found our way again since the injuries hit. Now that we’ve got guys back, we’re still playing without a purpose for too much of the game.”

Russell -- -- He picked up three fouls in the first quarter and had to sit. Anytime he gets foul trouble early in a game, it seems to throw him off as we’ve seen in the past. He admitted that after the game and said if it takes him out of his game, it throws off everyone’s rhythm. A lot of truth to that. At least he’s aware of it, which is good to see. There were stretches where he should have been moving the ball a little more to get others involved and instead looked for his shot. We struggled getting into sync. He was tired of the talk after the game. He just wanted everyone to basically shut up and get down to business. “I don’t want guys to speak their minds. I just want to come in and get to work,” he said. I think he’d play another game right now if he could. His decision making wasn’t quite there with the types of shots he was taking and some of the passes. “Both teams were forced to make freethrows. They made freethrows, we didn’t,” Russell said of the game. Russell missed three. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 2-10 shooting (2-5 from three, 5-8 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers, 1 steal and 4 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He hit Mozgov on the two-man game for a dunk to start. He spun to lose a man and missed the wing three. Bad transition D and he gave up a layup. He double dribbled in transition, turnover. He was hit on a step-back jumper off the weave, he made one FT. He missed a short pull-up in the lane. Second Half: He sank a wing three. He helped on Lopez and forced a double dribble turnover. He missed a three behind a screen. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He came off the screens on the sideline and drained the catch-and-shoot three. He was fouled on baseline turnaround, he made one FT. He was fouled on another pull-up off a handoff by Julius, he made just one again. He missed a pull-up, way short. He choked a layup off a nice drive down the lane, got it back and threw it away. He kicked to Deng for the three. He attacked the paint and missed a layup. He probed and drew FTs shortly later, he made both. He swiped a ball in the paint. He drew a charge, going down on an off-ball shove. Wild drive instead of pulling up for an open jumper.

Randle -- -- It’s rare when you have stretches where you don’t realize Randle is on the court. He’s usually active, involved and doing something, but this game had that feel to it. I like it when he’s making those quick handoffs or passes and setting screens. He seems more committed to those screens than any others on the floor. When he and Russell struggle, they’ve both go to focus more on all of those other little parts of the game that they can do better on. He wasn’t able to make his bully ball work. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-8 shooting (2-5 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 1 assist and 5 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He attacked the paint and swished the step-back elbow jumper. He missed a 20-footer. He attacked to his left, faked once, twice and hit the short And-1 in the lane, he made the FT. He missed a lefty jumphook. He missed a jumphook. Second Half: He missed a runner up against the shotclock. He showed a ball and was easily blocked (got to get contact first). He drew FTs crashing the glass, he made both. He missed a short one in the paint after a head fake. Great handoff to Young for three. He save a missed Laker layup by throwing it off a man. He drew FTs on the offensive glass, he made one.

Deng -- -- I’m hopeful this is the new “average” game for him. A near double-double. Nothing spectacular and he had moments. He did miss a couple of big looks at a three in the fourth that we needed. Both were at key moments and would have been huge. He also had a bad iso that you knew was going to be an instant miss. If he’s not in control and trying to create, forget about it. Early in the game, he had a couple good passes that led to open looks. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-12 shooting (1-4 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block and 2 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: Nick cut behind the overplay and Deng found him for the three. Nice feed to Mozgov rolling baseline and it led to a score. He blew past Lopez for a layup. He attacked and was stripped for a turnover. He missed a wing three. He grabbed a Randle miss and scored the putback. He missed a corner jumper, nice arch though. Second Half: He probed the lane, got deep and scored the layup. He sank a corner three on a nice arch. He jumped a passing lane a few seconds later, swiped the ball, sealed a man and scored the layup. He attacked down the lane and drew FTs, he missed both (but Nick got the board and hit a three). Bad decision to iso and he airballed the challenged runner (move the ball, you can’t create on iso). He missed an open corner three. Way off on a wing three.

Mozgov -- -- He had the Lopez assignment all game. I think that may have thrown off some of our mojo and rhythm a bit because it changed things up. He finished with the double-double. The rebounds were a season high. There were a few he came up with at the front of the rim, I wish he would have just gone up strong with instead of passing out, but still a good effort in that regard. His perimeter shooting was off. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-10 shooting (4-6 from the line) to go with 13 boards (7 offensive), 1 turnover, 1 steal, 1 block and 4 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: Great screen to lose Russell’s defender, sending him to the floor and he was rewarded with a bounce pass for a dunk. He blew a layup but tipped in the miss. He attacked off the dribble and drew FTs, he made one. He drew FTs when Lou found him cutting in the paint, he made one. He finished the interior oop from Nance, He rushed a baseline jumper and missed. He drew a foul on the offensive glass. He missed a 10-footer in the lane. He missed a 20-footer. He clanked a sideline jumper. He had 8 points on 3-8 shooting and 9 boards. Second Half: He overpassed to kickout to Clarkson for a bad three instead of the easy dunk at the rim he had. Lou attacked and shoveled a pass to him for a cram. Two offensive boards on one set and the Lakers eventually scored. He missed an elbow jumper.

Young -- -- When Nick was defending well and putting in that extra effort, the team started to dial it in on that end of the floor. He and JC had been making a lot happen on the defensive end of the floor earlier in the season. With Nick injured and JC trying to do too much and forgetting about D, the team fell apart. Those two really need to lock in and tighten the screws. They had moments, but it’s got to be more than that. “We got to finish out the game. Play the whole 48,” Nick said. He said he’s still trying to get his legs under himself more after the injury. He dislocated a finger on his off hand and had it put back in place. “It wasn’t no Kobe moment,” he said. “It wasn’t that far dislocated.” It took him 15 shots to get his 14. I know he wanted FTs on at least one three and picked up a tech not getting it. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-15 shooting (3-10 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 turnover, 1 steal, 1 block and 3 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He sank an elbow pull-up off the handoff from Mozgov. He missed an open corner jumper. He cut to lose his man on the overplay, took the pass and swished the wing three. He missed a pull-up 17-footer. He missed a three in transition. He blocked a man from behind. He attacked the paint, hung and missed. He airballed a corner three in transition. He was tripped on an attack, he made one, then pump-faked the second FT was called for it (jumpball at midcourt). Second Half: He missed a wing three in early offense. Great D the entire stand, he finally knocked a ball loose and forced the shotclock violation. He was stripped on the other end to give it back. He grabbed a Deng missed freethrow, pulled it out and knocked down the three. He dunked off the Nance steal as Larry threw it right to him trailing the break. He swished a sideline three off the handoff from Randle. He missed a pull-up at the top of the key. He missed a wing three. He missed a three trailing the break, getting hit with no call. He picked up a tech shortly later. He missed a three trying to draw a foul.

Clarkson -- -- I don’t know if the stat line looks as good or bad as the game he played, but it was a frustrating game to watch from him. Again, the decision making was really lacking. Like Randle, those turnovers combined with wild shots are just too many self-inflicted wounds. Defensively, he put in the effort, but it wasn’t always intelligent effort so you’d see him off in the wrong place at the wrong time. I’m hoping the limited minutes will really help him elevate that part of his game again. They need it. “We got to come in with that confidence, that same swagger we had and win these games,” Clarkson said. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 6-12 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 3 turnovers, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He missed a pull-up 18-footer. He tried to iso, faked himself out of his shoes and threw it away as he went down. No box out on the other end and he gave up a putback. He missed a short runner. He jumped a passing lane, pushed it out and scored a layup. Quick attack on a two-for-one and he scored the 3-footer. He then pushed out the stop on the other end with 5 seconds and banked in the runner in the paint. He up-faked, attacked and drew FTs, he made one. He tried to create on iso, turnover, layup the other way (run the offense). He stopped on a dime and hit the 10-footer. He had 8 points on 4-6 shooting. Second Half: He bricked a step-back three. He missed another three, at least under control on this one. He took the outlet, spun around the D and scored the layup. He attacked the paint, elevated, hung, missed but scored the putback. Bad decision to attack one on five and he lost the ball. He missed a drive across the lane.

Williams -- -- Luke praised Lou for trying to get guys involved more in this one. Not a lot of assists, but he certainly didn’t dominate the offense. He struggled with the three shot, and we needed those to drop. He had a quiet game, yet still managed to lead the team in scoring. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 5-12 shooting (0-4 from three, 6-6 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 3 turnovers, 2 steals and 4 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He got his man on his hip, waited for the help D to make a decision then took it for the layup. He attacked baseline and fed Mozgov cutting for FTs. He had his pass picked off trying to work the two-man game. He threw a cross-court pass away out of a timeout. He swiped it back on the other end. He mistimed a jump and gave up a putback. He attacked to his right and hit the floater. Second Half: He attacked the lane and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a three trailing the break. He was called for a charge on the break. He attacked the paint and shoveled a pass to Mozgov who crammed it over the rim. He missed a baseline fade, we got it back to him and he missed a corner three off a hesitation. He worked off the high screen and hit the FT pull-up at the end of the quarter. He drew FTs on a quick attack, he made both. Quick attack in transition again and he somehow snuck in a layup around the D. He drew contact and chucked it up to draw FTs, he made both. He missed the drifting elbow jumper. He missed a drive. He attacked from the wing and scored the layup. Not close on a wing three.

Ingram -- -- Another of the guys leaving 3 points at the FT line (we had three of them this game). We nickel and dimed ourselves to death. Ingram has some moments when he looks like he knows exactly what he wants to do and very comfortable doing it. They don’t happen a lot, however. He had a pull-up jumper early in the fourth that was one of those fast forward to the future plays. He attacked hard to his left, ducked his shoulder, got some contact, stepped on the brakes, elevated perfectly straight and swished. That is immensely tough to defend when he can get a little separation on contact. He needs more of those plays where he gets guys moving away from him so he can shoot under control without rushing. It will come. After the game, he wasn’t pleased with his rebounding tonight. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-9 shooting (0-2 from three, 3-6 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist and no fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -17. The Action: He missed a three in early offense. Good double on Lopez to force a bad pass. He missed a baseline fade on iso. He turned the corner with his left with speed and finished the lefty layup, very nice. He swished the pull-up jumper on iso. He missed a corner three. He missed a pull-up jumper. Nice D to smother his man and force a turnover on the pass. He attacked off the three line and drew FTs, he missed both, then missed a turnaround jumper on iso. He drew a charge on his man on the other end to get a stop. He attacked and was hit on the runner, he made both FTs this time. He had 7 points on 2-7 shooting. Second Half: One of his best pull-ups of the season, he swished an elbow jumper just beating the shotclock. He attacked with speed, drew the D and hit Nance for the jumper. He missed an open elbow jumper.

Nance -- -- He got the crowd buzzing and the Nets bench wincing at a massive throwdown over Lopez. He took off from the bottom of the FT line circle for that cram. Wow. He just kept rising. “I was hoping it would give us a little bit of adrenaline and kind of light a fire under us,” Nance said. He’s going to put together a heck of a highlight reel on those. It may overshadow a lot of the little things he did tonight with the blocks and steals and general hustle plays. He was playing scrappy and making things happen. We need more of that from the entire roster to get over the hump. “The score didn’t reflect how much of an offensive struggle it was,” Nance said. Oh, we saw it. The long stretches without scoring were painful. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-3 shooting to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks and 2 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He blocked a man under the hoop. Nice interior oop to Mozgov for a layup. He rejected a shot and controlled it under the hoop as his man spun to try to get around him. Second Half: He jumped a passing lane, tracked down the steal, threw while spinning in air to Nick trailing the break for the dunk. He battled for an offensive board and came up with it. Good job taking away a defensive board that looked like the Nets were going to get to. He changed directions on the pressure D on the perimeter, got speed into the lane and posterized Lopez. He sank the 17-footer off the nice drive and dish from Ingram. He took the pass in the lane and drained the baseline hook.

Walton -- -- Luke was still fuming in his postgame presser. Got to get the next one… First subs: Ingram and Clarkson in with 5:22 left for Deng and Young, Lakers up 1… Russell picked up his third foul in the first quarter and sat for Lou. Luke gambling and losing here… Mozgov out for Nance down 1… Deng for Randle, then Mozgov for Deng… Clarkson finally joining in on the Laker production and that made the difference early… The Lakers led 30-27 after the first… He started with a Nance, Deng, Ingram, Clarkson, Lou lineup… Young in with the Lakers up 5… Poor transition D and Luke called a timeout shortly later… All starters back in with 7:30 left… Ingram back in, Lakers down 1, Deng out…. A 12-2 Nets run and Luke called a timeout down 5… Just 6 points in the last 8 minutes for the Lakers… The Lakers trailed 52-43 at the half… A one-man run by Deng in the middle of the third quarter, a three by Nick and we took the lead… Lakers turning hustle into points… The Lakers led 76-75 heading into the fourth. Nance, Deng, Ingram, Clarkson, Williams lineup… Mozgov in for Deng to match up with Lopez again… Lakers struggling to get stops… Randle in for Nance and the Lakers quickly trailed by 8 with 4:47… Luke called a timeout and brought back in the starters out of that... They couldn’t close the gap…

Young team making bad mistakes that hopefully they will learn quickly to avoid.

For those that wanted this young team to go through its time of making rookie mistakes in the process of being good players are now getting their wish and it ain't pretty

Isn't Deng and Mosgov there to provide leadership during these times?

When will Luke put in MWP to provide that needed edge and fire while losing offensive options

Was at the game, tons of purple and gold fans last night!!!... Need to do something with rebounding, we were getting outhustled, even with Randle in the game

And shot blocking, Mozgov is mobile for pick n roll but no shot blocking

Also didn't feel like that "imma run thru wall to win this game' anymore, a little bit non-chalant, everybody except for SwaggyP

I expected them to be under .500 and was about to happily eat crow with their surprising November. Now they are where I thought they'd be. Opposing teams have figured them out and it's tough to sustain the energy level for the remainder of the season.

Hopefully, the losing doesn't grind the team down. This is the part of the culture Luke has talked about changing.

That's because he can get an assist.

I think Moz gets hosed by the refs,,, ALOT.
Everytime i looked at lopez and moz in the post, and not where the ball/play was happening, Brook was grabbing moz every freakin time. Other end, moz barely brushes lopez and brook goes to the line. Not gonna lie, saw these sequences happen like, multiple times. I'm starting to appreciate the big russian a lot more,,,

The injuries took the air out of this young team, and they lost a lot of confidence. They we're going to come down to earth sooner or later but the injury bug precipitated everything. You can see how the league has adjusted to them, and how Walton is now realizing this is not an easy coaching job. You need talent good coaching can only take you so far.

The refs in general have a agenda against the Lakers, I have seen them screwing the Lakers in multiple games this year either by non foul or another player shoving our players

When the refs missed that obvious travel during the Nets game I knew they were setting the Lakers to fail...

These guys seem to get away with these screw jobs way to often.

Watched this one earlier today, on DVR. Surprised they couldn't muster a couple more stops and couple more hoops mid 4th Q. Booker everywhere on our misses.

You said it, there for the taking up to that point.

Strangely out of sorts from the perimeter. Out of sycnh defending the Net nobodies, who scored almost at will heading to the 5:00 remaining mark.

Ooof.
