A Win…Finally… Nothing like the Sixers to snap your losing streak.

“I thought we came out and set our tone defensively early on and had one of our better defensive games for the most part tonight,” Luke said.

D’Angelo Russell was mentioned by multiple teammates and the coach afterward for setting that tone as the Lakers got off to an 11-0 start behind Russell.

The Lakers dominated the break, scoring 27 points as they turned defense into offense.

They led by 20 points when the stumbled to end the third quarter, letting that lead get cut in half (not a good stretch by Clarkson). The Lakers were able to hang on in the fourth to take the 100-89 win.

It’s the Sixers, but maybe they can serve as the slump buster and we start to turn things around.

Russell -- -- He did a good job setting the tone in this game. “He led by example and a lot of guys followed his lead,” Williams said, praising Russell’s game. Luke liked his full-court defensive effort, although he said he didn’t look fully healthy to him. “I wouldn’t call him 100 percent, but he looked good,” Luke said. Some early scores, passing and D all combined to help get the Lakers off to an 11-0 start. He faded somewhat as the game went along, just unable to connect consistently. But despite some miscues on either end of the court, a decent two-way effort. “Just slowly trying to progress. I don’t want to take a step backwards,” he said. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 4-12 shooting (3-8 from three, 4-4 form the line) to go with 7 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers, 1 steal, 1 block and 2 fouls in 26:33. He was a +13. The Action: He posted up, quickly spun to the middle and swept his arms through the defender to draw FTs, he made both. He looked off the D and hit Deng in transition for a dunk. He swiped the ball next time down and took it for a layup. He swished a wing three coming through the elevator screens and forced a timeout with an 11-0 lead. Busted play and he missed a three. He missed a turnaround in the post. He missed Randle who was open in the lane. Bad close out and he gave up a layup on the drive. He missed a three on a kickout. Double dribble in transition, turnover. He missed a short pull-up he should have had. Bad switch on the other end and he gave up a layup. He attacked baseline and found Nick for the three. He walked into a wing three and drained it. He had 10 points on 3-7 shooting and 5 boards. Second Half: He attacked the paint and was blocked. He swished a wing three off the Randle handoff. He missed a wing three. He got bumped out of bounds for FTs, he made both. He missed a wing three. Nice challenge on the perimeter to force a miss. He missed a wing three. He attacked the paint and kicked a dribble out of bounds.

Randle -- -- A new season scoring high. You can tell from the size of the notes in this one that Randle was active compared to the last game where he had stretches of invisibility. Certainly plenty of both good and bad. On the good side, his jumper was looking serviceable tonight. That resulted in a few makes in the midrange. Combine that with some of his drives for layups and it was a very efficient offensive game (shooting wise). There was a play in the second half that shows the confidence his guards have in him. Nick was starting to push the ball up but gave to Julius in the middle of the floor in the backcourt and Randle pushed it up, stepped on the gas and scored a layup getting the D on its heels. He’ll make his share of mistakes with ball handling, but the experience is important because he does have good handles and downhill speed that’s tough to cover when he gets it right. He had a couple of plays where the pressure D converged on him on the dribble and he didn’t give it up, opting to try to use his handles and got picked. That’s where Luke needs to keep on him to make better decisions in this learning process. A lot of these miscues are just mental mistakes and experience is what you hope cleans them up over time. It’s not an overnight process as much as some people would hope. Luke said they do a drill where you pick up the dribble against the pressure, make your pivots and get rid of the ball. So they are working on specifically some of these issues that cause turnovers. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 10-13 shooting (5-6 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 4 assists, 5 turnovers, 3 steals and 4 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: He held onto a tough pass in transition, spun and scored the layup. Shotclock low, we spread the floor for him to iso and he swished the pull-up 16-footer. He fired a bullet pass to Mozgov in transition, no chance for him to handle it, turnover. He attacked to his right and hit a tough fade on the baseline (not a good shot, but it went). He missed a wing jumper on an inbounds. He swiped a pass and hit Nick for the short jumper. He pushed out the break, slowed it up, crossed over a reaching defender and took it for a layup. Nance hit him running the floor for FTs, he made one. He airballed an open 10-footer. He quickly pushed out the turnover and scored the layup. He stripped a man in the post to get a stop. Unforced turnover, traveling on a kickout without putting the ball down to dribble, uggh. He got it back off some great anticipation on the other end, jumping the passing lane and taking it for the two-handed reverse jam. He was picked by a guard for a layup the other way. He scored 13 points on 6-8 shooting to go with 6 boards. Second Half: Sloppy perimeter foul, giving an unnecessary shove. Early offense handoff to Nick for the three. He pushed the ball out, stepped on the gas and scored the layup with the D on its heels. Quick handoff to Russell for the three. Another for Nick and he drew three FTs. He then picked up his fourth with 8:27 left up 20. He attacked perimeter pressure and took it for the layup. Too much dribbling on a pushout when multiple defenders converged on him, turnover. He sank a wing jumper with the shotclock low. He attacked the paint, was hit with no call and couldn’t finish. He pulled up his dribble in the paint and was called for 3 seconds. He sank a short jumper on the drive and dish from Lou. He was fouled intentionally with the shotclock about to expire, he made both FTs. Another intentional foul and he made both FTs.

Deng -- -- While he shot just 1-5 from three, he got tapped on a couple of those. The shot is still looking better, in my opinion. Quiet night, but the one three he did hit was a big one in the fourth to help keep the Sixers at distance. Some good moments on the glass. The Lakers battled well in the paint and around the rim. Some good efforts from the front court. Deng played both SF and PF again in this one. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-8 shooting (1-5 from three) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal and no fouls in 32 minutes. He was a +16. The Action: He dunked off the great look-off feed from Russell in transition. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He battled for an offensive board and scored the putback. He got tapped on a wing three. Second Half: He got tapped on a sideline three. He missed a pull-up off the dribble, kind of forced that one. He swished a big three on a busted play with 5 minutes left up by 9. He missed a pull-up three.

Mozgov -- -- He had to deal with some foul trouble that limited him a little bit on the defensive end. A couple of those came on the offensive end. He matched up with Embiid, who was very active trying to hit threes, attack or score around the rim. Mozgov didn’t fall for a lot of his up-fakes. Man, he gets in some battles in the paint. Guys seem to get away with a lot against Mozgov at times. Just a lot of wrestling, elbowing, shoving. Got to love it. One of the few parts of old school ball that still exists. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +14. The Action: He missed a jumphook working the post. He was called for an illegal screen, holding a man to erase a dunk. He dunked off the bounce pass from Lou. He attacked a lane, missed, got it back and threw it away (shoot those). He missed a wing jumper. Second Half: He finally drew a charge, going down on the perimeter. He was called for an offensive foul using his off arm to hook as he made a move across the lane. He dunked off the drive and dish from Nance.

Young -- -- Some good product from our starters in this game. Instead of relying on the bench to carry us, the starters threw some of the first punches. Nick and Russel both had 15-point games. They had some good chemistry back with Randle on those two-man sequences with the handoffs. Nice to see them maybe getting a little more comfortable again and look more like themselves as a unit. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-9 shooting (2-5 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block and 2 fouls in 21:27. He was a +16. The Action: Poor pass in transition but Randle still got it and scored. He was blocked on a three, we stole it back and hit him for the short jumper. He missed a corner three. Nice control as he pumped a man in air on the three line, tried to draw contact, couldn’t, so he gave the ball up and quickly got it back for the open elbow jumper. He sank a sideline three on a kickout from Russell. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He missed a corner three. He swished a wing three off the Randle handoff in early offense. He drew three FTs on a Randle handoff, he made all three. He backed a man down in transition and hit the And-1 turnaround from about 12 feet out, he missed the FT.

Clarkson -- -- Horrible end to the third period. He was a one-man disaster, cutting a big Laker lead to just 10 in a matter of a few possessions. That completely changed momentum in what should have been a game they were putting to sleep. The combination of bad decisions, bad turnovers and ill-advised isolation sequences, just snowballed. They need him playing controlled ball. He rallied a little in the fourth quarter with a three, a layup and a jumper to keep the Sixers from rolling over us. But the damage was done and the team couldn’t put the Sizers to bed like they should have. He said he wants the team to have fun and worry about getting better instead of worrying about wins or losses. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-9 shooting (2-4 from three) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 26 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He blew a layup on a drive. Bad decision on the break kicking out to Lou instead of hitting Randle for the easy dunk (Lou still made it). He drained a wing three on a swing pass. Nice feed to Lou cutting behind the overplaying D and it led to a layup. Bad D to give up a layup on an inbounds (Lou didn’t help by not protecting the paint on the pass, but that was on Clarkson with how he covered that). Bad chuck on an early offense iso and he missed. He missed a 12-footer. He turned his back then didn’t cover a man to give up a layup. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He walked away from an inbounds pass and it was stolen for a layup. He then traveled on the other end to compound that. He iso’d on the next possession, was picked and gave up a layup. He then fouled chasing his man from backcourt, just bad defensive position and he gave up more FTs. He iso’d and sank the 19-footer. He sank an open three on the swing pass. Dumb shot trying to hit a highlight three on a pull-back dribble. He attacked to his right with speed and scored the layup around his man.

Williams -- -- “I was a boy, I left here man,” Lou said of the team that helped him grow up from the high school draft pick to the sixth man of the year and vet scoring leader off the bench for us. He was the steady influence on the floor again for us tonight. He manufactured some bug freethrows in the fourth quarter when the Lakers were in dire need of some points to try to prevent a run from continuing. That stuff gets overlooked and often underestimated on how important it is, but when scoring dries up, his ability to manufacture some points is often huge. Defensively, the 4 steals were also huge. That’s one of the big things that he and Clarkson were able to come up with when our second unit really shines. I like seeing some of that pressure D or gambling from the bigs in passing lanes to keep us aggressive. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 5-12 shooting (1-6 from three, 7-8 from the line) to go with 3 assists, 1 turnover, 4 steals and no fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He sank a corner three on a kickout in transition. He missed a three trailing the break. His man tried to deny him the ball, he cut behind him, took the pass down the middle of the lane and scored the layup around the help D. He missed an open wing three working behind the screen. He drew FTs on a wing jumper, he made one. He blindsided a man to poke a ball loose. He attacked from the wing, used his body well against the big and finished the layup with his left. He crossed over his man badly and fed Mozgov rolling for the dunk. He manufactured FTs on a perimeter reach by a big, he made both. HE crossed over and hit the floater in the lane in transition. He scored 12 points on 4-6 shooting to go with 2 steals. Second Half: He missed a chuck from three up against the shotclock. His wing jumper was blocked. He missed a wing three. He jumped a passing lane and strolled to other end for a layup. He missed a reverse. His pass was picked off in the paint. He manufactured FTs in transition, he made both. He manufactured a couple more FTs on a perimeter reach, he made both. He missed a wing three. He found Nance sealing his man in the paint for a layup.

Ingram -- -- Another one of his 1 for X shooting games. Some iso plays that we don’t want and they resulted in some misses. That didn’t help contribute to the ball movement, which he’s usually good at. A little better effort on the glass, which doesn’t show in the 3 boards, but he was in there among the trees battling a bit more. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-8 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He iso’d on the baseline and missed the tough fade in the lane. He iso’d and missed the pull-up jumper. He missed a baseline turnaround jumper. He missed a wing pull-up three. Second Half: He attacked in transition, got hit and missed, no whistle so he grabbed his man and scored the reverse. Good job on the D boards to keep it away from a couple of bigs. He missed a three up against the shotlcock. He was standing on the sideline in transition, turnover on the kickout. He attacked pressure and missed a layup.

Nance -- -- “I told Larry that was one of the best 4-point performances I have seen in a long time,” Luke said. “I’m dead serious. He was probably our most impactful player out there tonight.” When they needed big boards on either ends or defensive plays, he was there. Love seeing the blocks from him. No reason we can’t see more of that. On the glass, he was skying for offensive boards that gave us key extra possessions. He was deflecting/blocking passes and challenging shots. Larry said his goals to improve were with more consistent defensive work and better rim protection. He gave us that. Just some excellent activity doing the grunt work. Got to love him. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-3 shooting to go with 11 boards (4 offensive), 1 assist, 3 turnovers, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 4 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He took an outlet and quickly hit Randle on the break for FTs. He kept an offensive board alive and it led to a Clarkson three. He swished a baseline jumper. He missed a one-hander from about 10 feet out. He blocked a lob pass to get a stop. Second Half: Nice challenge to force an airball on a three. He rejected a drive off a man to get a stop. He battled for an offensive board and was fouled to regain possession. He then scored a layup after sealing a man and taking a pass from Lou in the paint. He attacked some pressure D at the three line, drew the D and hit Mozgov with the bounce pass for a dunk. He went up high to pull down an offensive board and reset the offense. He was called for a charge shortly later, however, on a drive. He came up with steal off the two-man D with Lou.

Black -- -- Back in the lineup, he started the second quarter to complete our second unit and roster again. He quickly picked up a couple of fouls. He sat at the 8:35 mark of the quarter with his third foul, so a short first game as Luke didn’t go back to him in the second half. I’m hoping he’ll get that energy going and the team will find its mojo once again. He looked fairly mobile despite the foul trouble, so hopefully the injury is fine. The Stats: He didn’t shoot or score and had 1 board, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 3:25. He was a +0. The Action: He lost the ball on an attack, looked fouled. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Walton -- -- Strong start from Russell and the Lakers led 11-0, forcing a timeout… Mozgov and Embiid out for Nance, Lakers up 7 midway through the quarter… He brought in Clarkson for Young and Ingram for Deng, Lakers up 9… Lou in for Russell… Up 11 when Randle sat for Deng with a minute to go… The Lakers led 30-18 after the first… Black, Nance, Ingram, Lou, Clarkson lineup to start the quarter… Lakers up 10 when Black had to sit with foul trouble… Mozgov picked up his third foul shortly later so Luke went to Randle, pulled Nance, who went to the locker room briefly. Lakers up 12… Russell, Young, Deng in down 10 with 5:28 left… Nance returned from the locker room and Mozgov sat without picking up his third foul… The Lakers led 53-40 at the half. The Lakers had 8 steals, able to get some stops and turn those into points… The Lakers led by 18 when the Sixers called a quick timeout… Lakers up 22 when Ingram and Nance came in for the Laker bigs… A couple hoops by the Sixers and Luke called a timeout up 17. He brought in Clarkson and Lou to go with Nick… Nick out for Randle… Clarkson a disaster to close the quarter. Luke was shaking his head… The Lakers led 74-64 heading into the fourth… No Black in this time, but Randle instead… Mozgov in for Randle midway through the quarter… Russell in for Lou… Randle back in for Mozgov… Lou in for Clarkson up 7 with 2 minutes left… Lakers were able to hold on to snap the losing streak…

Nance is reminding me of AC Green/Kurt Rambis more and more I see him.

Is that a fair comparison?

Much better athleticism than both, better handle and court vision. Nance should be a better rim protector as well. Those guys did a better job of consistently bringing the effort every night. AC may have had the better jumper, but not the range that Nance looks like he can develop. All have the good hoop IQ and excel at the grunt work, but Nance's spectacular athleticism just brings a much different flavor to the game.

When Ingram was winding up to take the 3pt shot and the Ref blew the whistle because his foot was out of bounds I KNEW the shot would go in. You can see that Ingram's issue with his shot is mental.

At some point the game is going to slow down for him, and he's going to get a rhythm where his shot starts to routinely fall. It's not picturesque form, but with his length, agility and modest handle, he's getting open looks.

Finally finished watching the replay since I missed the live coverage. Spot on analyses for each of the players. Russell, Randle, Young, Williams and Nance all helped the Lakers big time.

Nice to see the top 10 Lakers all active and back on the court again!

Yeah, Nance is fun to watch. Lou, of course, has his moments, and so do DLo and Randle.......but Nance seems to bring it about 75% of the games. Wish he cultivated a better mid range jump shot.

I did notice Nance throwing one more pass than was needed on a lot of plays. That's the ONLY criticism I could think of for Nance. Several times he was open and looked for someone else to do the scoring. Can you imagine him playing a game like he had tonight, with everything he did out there, but instead of going 2 for 3, going 5 for 10 with some FT's added in? I look forward to seeing how far Nance takes his NBA career, I think he's got some really good years ahead of him.

He just makes it look easy on offense and the D has been an added bonus. Seems to be embracing the leadership role off the court, too.
