Quality Effort… Even though they lost this game, the Lakers look like they are starting to get that mojo back. They had 30 assists in the loss to the defending champs and took the game down to the final minutes. You can’t ask for too much more from them on the tough assignment on the second night of a back-to-back on the road. Take the progress and parlay that into getting yourself back to playing .500 ball again.

“That’s a good effort for us and that’s growth from last game,” Luke said.

With Russell sidelined, we slid Ingram into the starting lineup. Ingram would nearly pull off a triple-double tonight as a 19-year-old with 9 points, 10 boards and 9 assists as the Lakers PG for most of his minutes.

The Lakers got off to a good start, but lost the lead on an 11-0 run between the first and second quarter. They didn’t allow the Cavs to pull away and trailed just 3 by the half.

The Cavs had another run to start the half, but the Lakers didn’t fall apart. Nick Young was on fire from three on his way to a team-high 32 points, knocking down 8 threes tonight. Jordan Clarkson chipped in with 20 points off the bench with one of his best performances in recent memory.

The Lakers trailed by just 3 points with a few minutes left, right where they want to be on the road, but couldn’t get any closer, falling 119-108.

Randle -- -- He scored all of his points in the first half. A lot of nice work in the paint with jumphooks and layups. Later, he helped free up his shooters for threes and pile up assists. Again, more turnover issues. He said the little mistakes cost them the game, but didn’t bring up those TOs. The Cavs killed us on points on turnovers. They were instant trouble. “As long as we keep that mindset and play hard and play hard on the defensive end, just talk and limit those little mistakes, we’ll be fine,” he said. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 8-15 shooting (0-1 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 7 assists, 5 turnovers and 1 foul in 28:29. He was a -3. The Action: He attacked the paint and lost it out of bounds, turnover. He pushed it out, probed the lane in control and scored a lefty layup. He missed a 19-footer from the wing. He got a jumphook to bounce in next time down. He pushed it out, spun and banked in the jumphook. Good screen to free up Ingram for the lob dunk. He missed a drive to his left. He scored an And-1 layup on the break, nearly airballing the FT, however. He lost a dribble, points the other way. He attacked from the wing, took contact and powered in the layup. He was blocked in the paint. Handoff to Clarkson for the wing three. He missed a fade in the lane (should have bullied Frye). He missed a short one in the paint up against the clock. He iso’d, pumped and hit the baseline turnaround. He scored a layup when Deng threaded one to him. He spun in the post and hit the jumphook next time down. He scored 16 points on 8-13 shooting in the half. Second Half: He walked over to challenge a shot and gave up a three. He hit Nick on the pitch out for the three. He airballed an elbow fade. Handoff to Nick for a three. He attacked left and was stripped. He blew a layup in transition (should have gone for the dunk).

Young -- -- Nick nailed a career high 8 threes tonight, which helped make up for a subpar performance from Lou and Russell sitting out. “He’s really starting to step into more of a leadership role,” Luke said, mentioning that a couple of times Nick got into one-on-one action, but corrected himself. Teammates were finding him and all he needed to do was catch and fire on a lot of those. Good first half with 15 points as it seemed he and Kyrie had a little friendly back and forth going. “When you see someone talking trash, you want to back yourself up,” he said of that. He didn’t cool down, helping the Lakers chip away at the Cavs and stay in contention. “It’s a blessing to be back here and have a coach that believes in you and talks highly about you. It makes you want to go out there and do everything you can for him,” Nick said. The Stats: He scored 32 points on 12-19 shooting (8-14 from three) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal and 5 fouls in 38 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He curled into the lane to his left and scored the layup. He swished a fading 17-footer attacking to his left. He missed a deep three. He missed a baseline fade. He missed a wing three. Nice advance pass to Julius for the And-1 layup. He swished a three out of the timeout. He swished a pull-up at the FT line. Quick-fire three in transition and he got it to go. He missed a sideline three. Ingram found him again on the wing in transition for another three. He missed a three off the Randle screen. He had 15 points on 6-11 shooting (3-7 from the line). Second Half: He sank a three on the kickout from Randle. He sank a wing three off the Randle handoff. He swiped a pass on a rotation in the paint. He sank another wing three in transition. He missed a corner three, we got it back to him off the scramble for the board and he hit his second attempt. He got tapped on a wing three. He sank a sideline three on an inbounds.

Deng -- -- You can tell the Good Deng vs. Bad Deng pretty easy these days. Bad Deng will sometimes try to create on iso and that usually results in a miss. Bad Deng will throw bullets at the rim on jumpshots – flat jumpers, too much speed and often coming up short. Good Deng attacks open lanes, not needing to create, but just go. His perimeter shot has great arch and makes it over the front of the rim with consistency and consistently falls in. Good Deng hits the glass for offensive putbacks or gets layups off being in the right spot off ball. Tonight was mostly Good Deng with a rare appearance by his evil twin. He sank three shots from three, he got offensive putbacks and midrange jumpers. Defensively, he was challenging and typically holding the line. The Cavs worked to shake him off LeBron with screens. It looked like he took a shot to the hip late in the game on the defensive glass. Hopefully, it’s just minor. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-11 shooting (3-7 from three) to go with 8 boards, 3 assists, 1 turnover and 1 steal in 33:30. He was a -1. The Action: He swished a short baseline pull-up for the Lakers first score. He missed a wing three. He missed a tough fallaway in the post. He airballed a corner three on a kickout. Nice box out to secure the defensive board. He was stripped on a drive to his left. He drained a flat three on a swing pass. Wow, he threaded a pass to Randle behind the head of a defender in transition for a layup. Second Half: A missed dunk went right to him in the corner and he swished the high arcing three. He drew a charge on LeBron on the other end. He got tapped on a nice looking three from the wing. He scored a layup on the drive and dish from Clarkson (they reviewed it and took it away for a shotclock violation). Nice challenges on Love who tried to post him up twice with no success. He swished a good looking step-back jumper off the inbounds. He swished the nice arching wing three off the pitch out from Nance. He passed up the corner three, for a side dribble and another three that was way short (you could see his legs too far apart). He cleaned up the Clarkson dribble penetration with the putback.

Mozgov -- -- He received his championship ring prior to the game. Luke gave him a token 7:34 of action in the first half as the Cavs played relatively small most of the night. Moz didn’t impress anyone by missing two dunks in the third quarter and sat for the rest of the game. He thought he’d be off in this game because of how excited he was to see his old team and get his ring. So, yeah, not much of a game in this one. “I can say I was nervous, but I was excited all the way to the end of the game,” he said. Would have been nice if he finished those dunks to at least make a little statement of his own to his former teammates. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-6 shooting to go with 4 boards, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 1 foul in 15 minutes. He was a -0. The Action: He hit a hook from about 11 feet out. He was stripped in the post. He missed a turnaround in the post. Second Half: He was stripped in the paint, score the other way. He couldn’t finish a dunk on the two-man game with Nick. He got blocked by the rim on a dunk after a sweet pass from Ingram. Not close on a jumphook, sheesh.

Ingram -- -- “That’s the best I think and most confident he’s looked all season,” Luke said. According to Bres, Ingram was almost the youngest player to get a triple-double. Damn! (LeBron is.) He got the start at PG with Russell sitting tonight with knee soreness tonight. We later slid him over to PF in the quarter, where Love took him to the post. Then we finally moved him to SF when Nick sat all in the first. A lot of versatility there. But most of his time was spent as PG. He was organizing the offense well and finding his shooters. Nearly 41 minutes and he was a +1. Luke also praised him for how vocal he was, mentioning it was the first time he could hear him all season as he’s usually soft spoken. I was hoping he’d get that triple double. Blame Mozgov on getting stuffed by the rim off probably Ingram’s best pass of the game. That cost him an assist. Nick said he was disappointed he didn’t hit another three to get him the assist, but also blamed Mozgov for getting rejected by the rim. “You got to get a young boy his triple-double,” Randle said, mentioning Ingram will have many of those in his career. “My job is to just continue to get better,” Ingram said. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-10 shooting (1-5 from three) to go with 10 boards, 9 assists, 2 steals, and 1 foul in 40:48. He was a +1. The Action: He posted up and airballed a turnaround to start the game. He missed a 17-footer off a jumpball tip. He dunked the slow-developing lob out of the timeout. He missed a wing three on a kickout. Nice baseline cut as Lou was driving and Lou hit him for the layup. Quick pushout off the board and he hit Nick for a three. He found Nick again for the wing three. He hit Deng for the three. He had 4 points, 5 assists and 6 boards at the half. Second Half: He couldn’t keep Kyrie sealed in the post and he stole the pass. Flat-angled perimeter pass, turnover. Mozgov got blocked by the rim on a weak dunk attempt after a great bounce pass from Ingram. He hit Young on the inbounds under the hoop for a layup. He swished a pull-up 20-footer. He sank the three on a kickout to the wing. Off the mark on a lob pass to Nance, turnover. He missed a wing three up against the shotclock. He kicked to Nick who missed the three, then Ingram pulled away the offensive board and reset the offense and Nick hit a big three. Cheap foul call on a nice challenge on Love in the post on what should have been a big stop. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He missed a pull-up three in transition.

Clarkson -- -- Much better job not forcing it tonight. The basketball gods rewarded him. I don’t think we saw any of those plays where he gets OC and is forced into bad turnover because of it. He had a couple plays that were poor looks (I think he made one of them). But his game was much more fluid, which is how it used to look the previous couple of years. Could have just been one of those nights and others certainly did a great job moving the ball tonight instead of us taking turns iso’ing. We had some breakdowns defensively (there was a missed box out on his man that hurt late in the game). “Everybody was making the extra pass tonight,” he said as the first thing in his postgame interview. He mentioned that the coaches showed him his rookie stats (I think the assists) and he watched some of his highlights from that season maybe to help bolster his confidence. He said he needs to cut down on overdoing the iso type of ball and make the extra pass more, stay aggressive for himself and his teammates. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-12 shooting (4-7 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 31 minutes. He was -10. The Action: He up-faked and attacked from the corner, swishing the short floater. He got hit from behind on a pull-up jumper off the two-man game, he made both FTs. He didn’t run a play to start the quarter and missed the three without a pass. He missed a wing three against the shotclock. He swished a wing three off the Randle handoff from the same spot. Great job with 5 seconds left, attacking full court and scoring a lefty layup at the buzzer. He scored 9 points on 3-5 shooting. Second Half: He swished a wing three behind a weakside screen. He swished another sideline three on a nice ball reversal from one side to the other. He attacked and dumped it to Deng for a layup (reviewed and taken away because it was after the shotclock). He swished a tough step-back jumper at the top of the key. He attacked the paint and missed the drive, but Deng cleaned up the dribble penetration. No box out and his man got the offensive board on a missed jumper. He sank a wing three off the two-man sequence. He missed an elbow pull-up way short. He missed a three.

Williams -- -- He had 8 points at the half despite shooting 0-3 from the floor as he went 8-10 from the line. You would make a couple of buckets in the second half, but never got on track, going 0-4 from three. To win this game, we’d probably needed his A game, but we had guys making up for it. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 2-10 shooting (0-4 from three, 8-10 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 4 assists, 1 block and 1 foul in 26:31. He was a -14. The Action: He got the reach foul on the three and chucked it up for FTs, he made two. He got bumped on an off-ball cut to earn more FTs, he made both. He attacked and spotted Ingram cutting for a layup. He missed a wing three. He hit the side of the board on a baseline fade. He got bailed out with a foul after splitting a double team and challenging a third defender, he made one FT. He pulled up on a sloppy close out and drew three more FTs, he made all three. Second Half: He was forced into a falling sideline three with the clock about to expire and he missed. He missed the step-back 17-footer. He missed a good look at a three up against the shotclock. He attacked the paint and hit the high floater from about 5 feet out. He weaved through the D and scored a layup. Great strip on the baseline to get a stop. He missed a tough one in the paint trying to beat the shotclock. He missed a deep three.

Nance -- -- “It’s pretty cool playing under my dad’s jersey,” Junior said. He said he tried to treat it like another game, but really couldn’t. Kind of an average or below average game from him. He made one jumper and passed up several others. Defensively, he wasn’t as big of a deterrent as we need him to be. He had some good challenges for sure, but still other plays where I thought he should have done a better job at altering shots. He also needed to know his personnel a little better. The Cavs have good shooting big men in Love and Frye, we often gave them a little too much room unnecessarily. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 1 block and 4 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: He missed a wing jumper. He came up empty gambling for a steal and it led to a three. He gave up an And-1 layup on a drive, got to send some of those back. Second Half: Nice help D challenge behind Deng in the post to get a stop. Too much space to Frye and he gave up a three. He blocked LeBron’s drive as he was fumbling it. He popped out on the inverse play and hit the wing jumper. Way short on a 15-footer with 2 minutes left.

Walton -- -- Ingram in at the PG spot with Russell out. The Lakers led 14-10 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… They got a lob dunk to Ingram out of the timeout… Nance, Clarkson in for Mozgov, Deng, Lakers up 4 still… Timeout, Lakers up 3. Lou in for Randle. They got a three out of the timeout from Nick… Nick out for Deng as Love went to the post with Ingram on him and James returned for a Cavs big… The Lakers led 31-26 after the first quarter, giving up a three on the final possession… Nance, Deng, Young, Lou, Clarkson to start the quarter… The Cavs on an 11-0 run and Luke called a timeout down 3… Randle in for Deng… Lakers fading back by 9… Ingram back in… They cut it to 4 and drew a Cavs timeout… Despite the Lakers scoring in 6 of their last 7 attempts, the Cavs scored 36 points in the second quarter. Kyrie got going… The Lakers trailed 62-59 at the half. They had 16 assists… Quickly down 11 with some soft D and Luke called a timeout… They rallied back behind some good three shooting by Nick, Clarkson and even Ingram… They cut it to 89-85 heading into the fourth… He started a Nance, Deng, Ingram, Williams, Clarkson unit again to start the fourth… Young in for Ingram after 5 minutes, Lakers slipping back by 9… Ingram back in for Deng… They cut it back to 4 off a three by Nick. Timeout by the Cavs with 4:49… They cut it to 3 with 4 minutes left off another three by Nick… After a cheap foul call on Ingram on a challenge on Love, the Cavs rolled away with the game…

Loved Ingram's performance. It's too bad the kid couldn't get the triple double (or the team the win) but sure bodes well for the future!

except Giannis is way more muscular than Ingram.

Mozgov managed to posterize himself in 3rd when he hit the front rim on that dunk attempt

Thanks DB - interesting to see how much some of BI's teammates wanted that triple double for him, in addition to us fans.

More vocal game from him too. I'm liking hearing Luke mention this and the confidence BI seems to be picking up. Finally a 4 for x game instead of 1 for x... Also +1 in 41 minutes against the Cavs. Impressive.

That was probably the loudest moment for me in the game. Couldn't contain a "MOZGOV!!!!" Great pass from Ingram.

Yeah, I think Luke and staff have no worries about Ingram's confidence. Luke mentioned they don't think that's the issue for him when it comes to his shot and alluded to how well he shoots in practice. He didn't elaborate on what he thought was the issue but I've always thought he's getting rushed with the speed of the game.

One thing I think Luke liked a lot last night is that Ingram wasn't calling his own number when running the offense. I think that's more of a knock on JC, Lou and maybe Randle/Russell versus something BI has done. But it helped set the tone and get the team back into that high assist mindset instead of the iso ball that we've seen. Curious if he leans in that more from BI or gets others to follow suit more.

Thanks DB, appreciate your analysis as always! Tis the season that, even when watching a game, I'm distracted by being busy and missed a lot of the game situations. I'm glad Ingram is getting into the mix and gaining confidence.

Finding the balance between passing and scoring is often hard to get while agreeing on DB's "knocks"
