Confused Down the Stretch… A young team, a young coach…the Lakers are going to have plenty of learning moments this season. They couldn’t close down the stretch tonight with confusion on both ends in the final minute of the 102-100 loss to the Jazz.

The Laker bigs helped L.A. to a small first half lead as the Laker guards struggled. Unlike the last game, however, the Lakers starters played a sleepy third quarter. A 4-point lead turned into a 5-point hole before Williams and Robinson sparked the Lakers off the bench at the end of the quarter to take the lead back.

The Lakers lost the first 5 minutes of the fourth quarter, but battled back to tie it up again. Back and forth the teams went down the stretch.

After a timeout in the final minute with the score tied, the Lakers milked too much clock presumably to make sure it was a two-for-one possession. It resulted in a bad look and shotclock violation instead. On the other end, the Jazz buried a three as the Lakers got lost defensively. After they traded foul shots, the Lakers trailed by 2 points. Luke called a play with no timeouts, resulting in Russell airballing a three at the buzzer.

“That’s on me,” Luke said. He thought after Gobert missed that second FT, they should have scrapped the play and spread the floor since they only needed a two to tie it.

“He’s trying to do the right thing and run the play that the coach called,” Luke said of Russell. Just too many miscues to take the W in a close one.

Russell -- -- He airballed a three at the buzzer that would have won the game. Lakers had plenty of time, but no timeouts in that final possession. Still, you should go sooner since you are down (that way you can foul, get a rebound and possibly another shot). A lot of his shots were coming up way short tonight, which makes you wonder how his legs are feeling with the knee issues. That one was way short. He only shot 1-5 in the first half but had 3 assists, which was a little deceptive as he setup teammates for FTs or had hockey assists. He orchestrated the offense well despite not scoring until the final possession of the first half. Second half, really a non-factor for the most part. “We had our chance but we didn’t take advantage of it,” Russell said. Some poor execution by the Lakers on both ends down the stretch cost them. Luke said Russell is more comfortable as a scorer, but trying to play how they want him to. “He’s been great. He’s trying and that’s all you can ask for,” Luke said. They want him to find a balance to do both scoring and playmaking. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-11 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 1 board, 4 assists, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 24:32. He was a -8. The Action: He attacked the paint, drew Gobert and found Mozgov for the score. Way short on a pull-up jumper off the high screen. He found Deng on the skip pass for the three. He missed a drive, but Julius cleaned up the dribble penetration. He wowed the crowd with a between-the-legs, behind-the-back crossover to break down the D and set up Mozgov for the open jumper. He missed a corner jumper. He setup Randle for FTs on the break. He missed a three in transition. Hockey assist on the two-man game with Randle that led to the Mozgov dunk. He attacked to his left and scored the layup high off the glass. Second Half: Way short on an open elbow pull-up. He was stripped on a drive. He wheeled into the paint and missed the rightly layup he should have had. Nice advance pass to Randle who was hacked on the break for FTs. He spun in the post to lose his man but was blocked one the layup. Short again on a pull-up wing jumper. He sank a 20-footer from the wing up against the shotclock. He airballed the three at the buzzer.

Randle -- -- He played with some excellent energy on both ends from start to finish. “When he’s playing with that type of fire that’s when he really elevates himself as a great player in this league,” Luke said. Offensively, he came up with multiple clutch scores down the stretch. He sank a huge three midway through the fourth to beat the shotclock. He took it to Gobert off the dribble and scored on him on multiple possessions. He had no issues with Gobert all game, which is crazy with as good a defender as Rudy is. Manly, game from the youngster tonight. He looked a little more aggressive defensively out of the gates, just getting after it more and with purpose on the ball. Off ball, a lot quicker reactions to rotations. Just good energy on that end of the floor and very controlled offensively on the other end. Defensively, he wasn’t guarding up anyone when we gave up a huge three with 21 seconds left. If you look at that play, he’s seeing Gobert and Russell switching, then Gobert possibly coming down the lane and he got stuck in no man’s land. Tough position to be in and we ended up getting burned, unfortunately. He brought that up as the key play of the game and said there was some miscommunication. He tied his career high tonight (would have had it but a FT went down and out with 14 seconds left). “Metta always tells me you got to make big shots down the stretch,” Randle said. He had several clutch ones, but regretted missing an And-1. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 9-12 shooting (1-1 from three, 6-8 from the line) to go with 12 boards (6 offensive), 3 assists, 2 turnovers, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He missed a jumphook off a spin on iso. He airballed a jumphook in the post, then forced the opponent into a travel with pressure D in the backcourt. He cleaned up the Russell dribble penetration with a putback dunk. He stripped a ball from his man in the paint, pushed out the dribble and powered in a layup under control. He airballed a floater after pushing it up court and then traveled touching it again. He confused Mozgov on his screen-roll coverage defensively and we gave up a dunk. He probed off the two-man game with Clarkson and scored a layup. He got to the line off the feed from Russell in transition, he made one, but chased after his rebound, set a great pick and it led to a Laker score. Nice interior feed off the two-man game with Russell to set up Mozgov for the dunk. He grabbed an offensive board, spun in the lane and hit the jumphook. He had 9 points and 7 boards. Second Half: He was called for an illegal screen with the ball in his hands. He drew FTs in transition, he made both. He hit the jumphook in the lane. He was fouled on a putback attempt for FTs, he made both. He attacked to his left and scored the layup softly off glass. He drained a 28-footer to beat the shotclock. He attacked and swished a floater over Gobert (nice job leading with the knee like Karl Malone). He sized up Gobert again up against the shotclock, attacked, got contact and hit the short floater again over him with 1:09 left. He attacked Gobert off the three line, drew contact and couldn’t get the lefty And-1 layup to go with 14 seconds left, he made the first, got tapped on the second.

Deng -- -- The Laker starting front court had 26 points in the first half spread evenly among the three. Our two starting guards combined for just 2-13 shooting and 4 points in that half, but we had the lead because of the play of our bigs. Unfortunately, all of Deng’s points came in that first half. He and Mozgov were MIA on that end of the floor in the second half. Nearly a double-double from Deng as we are running him in some staggered rotations to put him at the PF spot with the bench. Good job on the boards, but we did give up a key putback to Gobert late in the game while he was trying to box him out. Tough in that small ball with a big guy like that. Also, wish he could have switched out to the three shooter on that big shot in the final possession but he got hung up with his man and didn’t switch. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-10 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 9 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover, 1 steal, 1 block and 2 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He swished a baseline jumper off the dribble. He sank a three on the skip pass from Russell, nice arc on the shot. He got backdoored for a dunk. He curled into the paint, used his body to shield Gobert and the offhand to make the layup. He airballed a corner three on the kickout. He jumped a passing lane on the other end to take a pass away for a breakaway layup. He gave up a layup getting nailed to the floor. He missed halfcourt heave at the buzzer. He rejected a layup to ignite a break. He had 9 points and 5 boards and was a +8. Second Half: He missed a jumphook in the post. Great help D to nearly force a turnover and disrupt a shot. He stepped on the sideline, turnover. Flat on a pull-up jumper and he came up short. Straight line drive from the three line but he couldn’t finish the layup at the rim. He attacked baseline and missed. He couldn’t box out Gobert and we gave up a putback score.

Mozgov -- -- They highlighted the Mozgov/Gobert match up in pregame because of how important it is to pull Gobert from the paint (and how well Mozgov did in the last game against Jordan). Mozgov can cause problems for bigs that like to plug the paint by taking advantage of his jumper as well as setting good screens to free up guards. A lot of the plays we run for Mozgov are what the Warriors would run for Speights last year, the perimeter shooting bigman in their schemes. A good first half with 8 points. Unlike the third quarter of the last one, however, Mozgov was quiet tonight in the second half of this one. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-8 shooting (3-4 from three) to go with 4 offensive boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 block and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He missed a 17-footer on the Lakers first possession. He hit a jumphook off the drive and dish from Russell. He swished a baseline jumper off the sweet drive and dish from Russell. He missed a dunk, then fumbled away a drive and dish from Clarkson on the same possession. He missed an 18-footer. He drew FTs on the drive and dish from Ingram, he made both. He dunked off the interior feed from Randle. He intercepted a lob pass. Second Half: He attacked baseline to draw FTs, he made one. He tapped out an offensive board to reset the offense.

Young -- -- Going to his left lately, he’s looked automatic. Even that looked like a struggle tonight as he made just one shot in six attempts in the first half before finishing 2-8 with 4 points. He’s been making a strong case for Most Improved Player this year, but had a dud in this one. The combination of Walton trusting him and Nick growing up some after a low point in his career last year seems to having him playing some of his best ball, just flat tonight. The Jazz are good defenders, but Nick was more off rather than them locking him down. Would have been great if Nick could have matched some of Hayward’s points. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-8 shooting (0-4 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 2 steals and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He missed a fade in the lane. He missed a deep three trailing the break. He missed a three on iso. He attacked to his right and pulled up on the baseline for the jumper. He missed a jumper from the top of the key. He missed a three going to his left, way short. Second Half: He missed a wing three on a kickout. He swiped a perimeter pass, turned it over, then stole the outlet pass back. He swished an 18-footer going to his left.

Clarkson -- -- He came out looking to pass early on. Some passes might have been held onto by teammates, but he was off the mark quite a bit and it resulted in a number of turnovers (3 credited to him in the half). He forced some shots, but those generally went in tonight. The easier shots he missed. “We got to get that stop,” JC said of that final play. Good to see a lot of the guys focusing on that end of the court after this one. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 6-10 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 5 boards (3 offensive), 3 assists, 3 turnovers, 1 steal, 1 block and 2 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: A couple of passes that teammates probably should have had, but were off the mark and fumbled away. He hit a forced floater in early offense. He attacked and kicked to Robinson for the jumper. He picked up his dribble then threw it away. He then missed a three in transition as we stole his turnover back. He missed a jumphook. He missed a layup, a little wild on the finish, but bounced back up and tipped it in. He pounded the dribble, worked across the lane and scored the layup. He put a man in jail off the screen, bounced off him and swished the floater over Gobert. He hit Randle off the two-man game for a layup. Second Half: He missed a drive right. He threaded a pass to Ingram in transition for a layup. He probed baseline, pumped to draw contact on a jumper and made it with no call. He had to force up a baseline jumper with the shotclock low and he knocked it down.

Williams -- -- The Jazz did a pretty good job denying him the ball down the stretch. He had them on their heels in the second half and helped us rally a couple of times. We bungled up that execution twice in the final minute and that resulted in him heaving up a prayer on iso to beat the shotclock and then getting stuck on screens and not open for that final shot. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 6-13 shooting (2-4 from three, 8-8 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He fumbled away a pass after backdooring his man. He shook a defender, got a reach and drew the whistle in the corner, he made both FTs. He couldn’t finish a drive. He attacked on iso and drew FTs, he made both. He threw a cross-court jump pass over Ingram’s length, that was how far off the mark it was. He got lost on D and gave up an And-1 trying to recover. He missed another layup getting to the rim. He missed a three. Second Half: Sloppy bounce pass, turnover, dunk the other way. He sank a drifting wing three up against the shotclock. Soft touch on a floater next time down and he got it to go. He swished a pull-up at the FT line off the weave. Next time down, he attacked in early offense and wrapped a pass around a defender to Robinson for a layup. He probed off the high screen and drew FTs at the end of the quarter (went a little early), he made both. He missed a tough floater. Soft touch going high off the glass over Gobert on the layup. He measured and drained a deep three off the Randle handoff. Quick attack in transition and he brought rain with a teardrop over Gobert that swished. He curled into a lane on a handoff to draw FTs, he made both. He missed a good look at a three. He missed a tough heave on iso against the shotclock.

Ingram -- -- Some quality playmaking from Ingram in the first half, but his impact faded as the game went along. His struggling with that perimeter shot and didn’t take a three tonight even if they were going under screens. Prior to the game, he was 1-16 from three so he’s not feeling very confident from there. Defensively, he had stretches against old man Joe Johnson who will take our young guys to school with his old man game. “We’re showing progress on both the offense and defensive end. We’re playing with a lot of physicality,” Ingram said. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-5 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He attacked the pressure but was blocked from behind on the poor finish (go strong). He sank a step-back baseline jumper. He forced a man into a travel in the paint with his size. He missed a pull-up 15-footer. Slick crossover to attack to his right, draw the D, then whip a pass off the dribble back to Robinson for the layup. He crossed over on the dribble and hit Mozgov for FTs. Second Half: He attacked the paint, took contact with no call and couldn’t finish, but kept it alive. He stepped on the sideline, turnover. He scored a layup when Clarkson hit him on the break. Turnover trying to thread a pass through D on a drive, layup the other way. He posted up Johnson and drew FTs, getting slapped on the turnaround, he made one.

Robinson -- -- He had 8 of his season high 10 points on 4-4 shooting by halftime. Some nice setups by teammates to get him scores, but he also scored off hustle putbacks and even swished a jumper. We’re running him a lot with Deng on the second unit. So the Black/Nance minutes are now primarily Robinson/Deng. No telling on when Tarik will return. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 5-6 shooting to go with 3 boards, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He scored a layup around Gobert. He swished the baseline jumper on the drive and kick from Clarkson. He poked a ball away from behind in transition, then crashed the glass and threw down the putback jam off a missed three. He drew a charge on the D end, stepping in front of a big on the drive to get the stop. He stepped around the post entry pass to create a turnover. He scored a layup off the drive and dish from Ingram. Second Half: He scored a layup in a crowd after a couple pumps when Lou set him up. He missed a layup getting contact with no call. He threw a pass away, layup the other way.

Walton -- -- After giving up a few buckets early, the Lakers rallied back with several in a row keyed off Russell orchestrating the offense. This forced a timeout, Lakers up 1 after 5 minutes… Lakers up 1 when Ingram came in for Deng after 7 minutes (and 7 points from Deng). Clarkson in for Young… Robinson and Lou in for Mozgov and Russell… Deng it at PF… The Lakers trailed 28-25 after the first quarter… Robinson, Deng, Ingram, Lou, Clarkson lineup… Lakers up 3 when we brought back in Nick, Randle and Mozgov… That unit making some good rotations and recovery defensively… Good sub to bring in Deng to help spread the floor on the final possession and Russell scored a layup (Randle at the C spot, but it gives Russell more room to work)… The Lakers led 52-48 at the half… An ugly 9 combined turnovers for the two teams in 3 minutes… A 7-0 Jazz run and the Lakers fell back by 2 points midway through the quarter when the timeout came… Ingram and Clarkson for Young and Deng…Lakers down 3 when Russell sat for Lou... Sleepy quarter by the Lakers. No energy like the other night… Robinson in with the Lakers down 5 with 2:32. Lou jumpstarting the Lakers offense… The Lakers led 74-72 heading into the fourth… Timeout by Luke as we fell back by 4 early… Mozgov and Randle returned for Deng and Robinson, Lakers down 5 with 6:19 left… A couple scores by Lou and a big shotclock beating three by Randle and the Jazz called timeout. This is when Luke needs to whip them to the finish line like a jockey… Russell in for Clarkson… Deng in for Mozgov with 3:48, Lakers up 1, going small with Randle at C (Gobert still in)… Nick in for Lou with 1:09 left. Smaller lineup gave up a putback to Gobert, might have brought back a big there as we took a timeout immediately after the score, tied 99-99… Lou in for Ingram… Bad possession out of a timeout as we ran clock down a ton and were forced into a prayer/shotclock violation. Meanwhile, the Jazz execute a nice three on the other end… Lakers missed a long chuck from three in the final possession as they were running the same play Luke sent in assuming they would need a three. Learning moment for the young team and young coach…

Thanks DB.
Didn't like the final moments but was a fun game overall.
You nailed it, young team, young coach...they will get it put together more eventually but it will be bumpy at times.

Fun game, I feel like the team's starting to get it together again based on what we saw tonight, mistakes and all.

That OOT before the Ingles 3... What in the world did Luke draw up? That's my biggest gripe of the night. What was that

I think he was wanting to draw the clock down to give them 2 for 1, but whatever action they were hoping for didn't happen. Utah just holds everyone on these plays, and mucks it up. Lou passed up a better shot for a harder one too, but pretty clear the play was to dribble out clock.

Kodak Learning Moment

DLO is more comfortable as a scorer while trying hard to play the right way

Youngsters are learning about the tremendous physical and mental challenges to play at a high level in the NBA for 82 games. Noteworthy since the Lakers have played the most games of any team, along with the most road games with key players already missing games with injuries

As Stu Lantz has often stated, the NBA is a "game of adjustments." How will the team reacts as opponents have scouted to identify tendencies and weaknesses while their young legs are feeling the "pain."

When will DLO embrace the "Steph Curry" mode of moving ball will provide him easier opportunities to score

Hey, maybe you can say this in another half dozen threads or so?

Thanks, DB!

Strange thing with these second halves. I'm not sure it can be pinned on experience as it is often Mozgov or Deng disappearing... Fatigue? At least Mozg does not play so many minutes. Must be mental.

Thanks DB. Like you highlight, should look at this as a learning moment. Need to get these in early and out of the way so that they know what and how to close in the future.

Randle was clutch and really showed balls again and again going at Gobert. Nice to see.

If Laker fans don't want Luke, the Warriors and many other teams will take him in less than a heartbeat

Mosgov is completely dependent on the play of the perimeter players

Deng's situation is different, though he is playing better

When DLO is shooting/missing
When JC is missing and making mental mistakes
When Lou is taken out by the opponents' strategy
When Nick is not hitting
When Randle is hot then cold then hot

Makeup of an erratic team seeking consistency

Depends. We certainly didn't look for Mozgov like we did in the start of this one or in the last game coming out of the second half. So, you could chalk some of that up to youth, too. As far as Deng goes, we're very inconsistent in how we use him, as well. We're getting better at running some two-man sequences for him... but I think it's been a mix with him: 1. Not being in game shape to start the season, 2. New offense, 3. Youth movement being inconsistent makes for inconsistent execution offensively. All those things have improved, but it's still going to take a while for consistency as a group.

I've kept an eye on all of the timeouts this year/deadball play calling. I don't think this is accurate. We've had some great plays run. End of game in this one was a disaster and in the spotlight, but he calls plays all game long and they often work well.

What are your suggested changes on how to utilize Deng. It has been offered that Deng's best position is PF at this stage of his career and today's NBA game. Interesting that Deng did not being in game shape, considering he is a veteran on a new team with a big contract.

Mosgov and Deng's effectiveness is indeed tied to DLO's ability/mindset/basketball IQ. Seemingly this has allowed opposing teams to defend these two

I like how Luke didnt throw D'Lo under the bus on that airball. Instead he took the blame on himself and kept the confidence of his guys.

That's why next year, when these guys a little bit better, they'll want to run through walls for Coach Walton. I like that we're headed in the right direction.

Thanks DB! This is what the learning experience is all about, right? When Gobert missed the 2nd free throw, I remarked to my dad I was interested to see what happens on the final shot now that we don't have Kobe guaranteed to take the shot... but Russell wasn't close on a Kobe-style hero shot. Hopefully this gives Russell a pause on hero ball hereafter... would have really liked to see Julius rewarded with an attempt at the game tying shot after his excellent game.

It will be fascinating to watch how long it will take for this group of youngsters to embrace the fact that the system thatbLuke is implementing is their greatest weapon.

Remembering how Pop took a young Tony Parker immediately out of games when he wasn't playing well, hey - Pop took out the entire starting lineup just minutes into the game - to notify when they were playing bad, instruct/teach and implement (via putting going back into the game), will Luke use this method

Fun game, I feel like the team's starting to get it together again based on what we saw tonight, mistakes and all.

That OOT before the Ingles 3... What in the world did Luke draw up? That's my biggest gripe of the night. What was that

Was that the one where DLO dribbled the clock down and then nothing happened? That one was frustrating. While I do think DLO went a bit too long, it could not have helped that the rest of the team picked that moment to participate in the mannequin challenge. My mind was blown NO ONE was moving AT ALL. Lots to learn for this team still. #growingpains

Thanks DB!

Although I remember young Kobe shooting a couple air balls against Utah and that never slowed him down...

Point well taken

It is noted that KB was a SG, not a PG

An indecisive PG unsure of whether to shoot or pass and not able to break down his man in single coverage is not a good situation

If the play is broken, one can always bring another player to start a P&Roll or Pick&Pop situation - when DLO is more experienced and understand his strengths and weaknesses
