Too Tough To Handle, Julius Randle… Luke Walton purposely challenged his young power forward in practice yesterday. “He pissed me off,” Randle said. Luke would call him later that night to keep on him to step up and be a leader of the team.

“I asked him if he was mad at me,” Luke said of the call. Randle responded he was happy Luke cared enough to call, but Luke said he misunderstood the question. “I don’t care if you’re mad at me,” Luke said. “I just wanted to know if you are still mad at me.” He then talked over why he got on him on practice. He wanted Randle to be great, tap into his potential and play engaged without checking out of possessions.

Randle’s response tonight? 19 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists for his second triple-double of the season in the 116-102 win over the Grizzlies.

“I just try to accept the challenge and try to be as coachable as I can be,” Randle said.

The Grizzlies had their full, healthy lineup of vets, but the Lakers didn’t care. They moved the ball and bombed threes as Russell and Young combined for 10 first half threes. These were all catch-and-shoot types, working off ball. No iso, but doing work as guys like Deng and Randle set them up.

At the end of the night, the Lakers would have 17 threes and 34 assists.

“That’s the most complete game we’ve put together, obviously, in a long time and against a really good team, a really good defensive team,” Luke said. “Which hopefully reinforces the idea when we played and made plays for each other we’re tough to guard.”

Russell -- -- Dude was splashing. A lot of off ball action for him as he and Nick worked open off screens for threes. He had 15 points in the first half, hitting five threes in seven attempts to go along with 4 assists. He’d sink one more in the second half. It’s noteworthy that none of his made threes were off the dribble. Just catch, fire, swish, ripping the nets from all parts of the three line. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t playmaking. He had some brilliant passes tonight, a few to Julius that set him up for easy scores (a bullet down the lane to him for a layup, a backdoor bounce pass for a dunk and another hit in transition. Fun to watch as these guys develop chemistry. Keep progressing. “Everybody was moving the ball and the open man got the ball,” Russell said, mentioning the ball movement wasn’t a conscious thing, but something that happened organically. Hopefully, they learn from it. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 6-12 shooting (6-9 from three) to go with 4 boards, 6 assists, 2 turnovers, 1 steal and no fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +19. The Action: He swished a three on a catch and shoot after Julius fired it back to him on the perimeter. He drained a corner three off a swing pass. He swiped the ball from Gasol on a switch, then missed a three off the dribble in transition. His pass was picked off for a dunk the other way. He missed a corner three on a kickout. He tried to hit a teardrop from behind the board with the shotclock low, not close. He attacked in transition and set up Randle for the layup. He sank a three straight away (should have been an And-1). He swished a wing three off a swing pass from Nick out of a timeout. He missed a long turnaround posting up. He swished a three off the DHO from Mozgov. Nice backdoor bounce pass to Julius cutting down the lane for a dunk. Sweet bullet feed to Randle down the middle of the lane for a layup (that was a laser on time on target). Second Half: He swished a corner three on the kickout from Deng. He missed a pull-up three off the Randle screen. He missed an elbow pull-up against the shotclock. He got backdoored for a layup. He curled off the Randle screen and hit Julius for the layup. He dropped a pass to Randle trailing the break for a layup. He hit Nick backdooring his man for FTs. He setup Ingram for FTs on a drive and dish. He went for the hard pass instead of the easy one, turnover on the baseline drive. He gave up a straight-line drive and Mozgov fouled out.

Randle -- -- “I don’t care about the numbers,” Luke said. “The thing that I liked most about his game tonight was that he was alert the whole game. He still made mistakes but there was never a time on the court where he was just kind of standing up and checked out of a possession.” Luke was in Draymond Green’s ear over the past couple of years, helping him elevate his game and driving that Warrior’s team to the next level. He’s in Randle’s ear right now. “You can have a bigger impact on the game than you are having,” Randle said that Luke challenged him about. Great effort from start to finish. Triple-double pace in the first half with 12 points, 7 boards and 4 assists. He didn’t let up in the second half. He’s fast, strong, has excellent handles and a big body. He’s an elite rebounder, has a gear not many PFs have and handles to get him up and down the court. He’s just a wild horse that needs to be focused, trained and unleashed again. Critics want to trade everyone or predict our young player’s ceilings. Just give them time. They show the flashes of games like this, then people forget about because they aren’t consistent. It takes time and experience to be consistent. A game like this is why the Lakers are do high on him. Side note, he broke the Grizzlies streak of 177 games of not giving up a triple-double. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 9-15 shooting (1-4 from the line) to go with 14 boards (2 offensive), 11 assists, 2 turnovers, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a +22. The Action: He pivoted around his man in the post, missed the layup, got it back and scored the putback. He fired a pass to Russell for a three. He spun and drew FTs in the paint, he missed both. He disrupted a pass to force a turnover. He scored a layup off the drive and dish from Russell. He finished the lob from Lou in transition. He missed a flat 18-footer. He battled for an offensive board and hit Russell for a three. He hit Nick for a three next time down. He missed short lefty layup after bullying his way to the rim. He backdoored his man, took the pass and threw down with both hands. He posted up, spun baseline and powered in the layup. Brilliant change of speed on a cut down the lane and Russell fired a bullet to him for the layup at the end of the half. Second Half: He missed a flat jumper trying to beat the shotclock with a man on. He hit Mozgov for a FT jumper and an elbow jumper on back-to-back possessions. He traveled on a spin move in the post out of a timeout. He scored a layup off the two-man game with Russell. Russell hit him again in semi-transition next time down for a layup. He kicked out to Clarkson for the three. He then jumped a passing lane on the perimeter, swiped the ball and took it for the uncontested dunk. He set up Clarkson on the DHO for a three. He attacked across the lane and hit Ingram for the open jumper and Randle’s tenth assist. He spun on his man at the elbow and was wrapped up for FTs, he made one. He missed a jumphook on iso across the lane. He attacked and kicked to Deng for three.

Deng -- -- He had a series of possessions in the second quarter where he had the ball at the top of the arc with Russell and Young coming off screens for threes. He, Randle and Russell each had 4 assists in the first half. Deng had a couple more in the second half. I’d like to see a lot more of those. Actually, it’s essential with Nick and D’Lo as good of shooters as they are. So a quiet scoring night for Deng, only making a three, but good job setting the table. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-4 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 6 boards, 6 assists, 1 turnover and no fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +16. The Action: He missed a wing three. He attacked off the dribble, hung and bricked badly. He hit Nick coming off the screens for a three on back-to-back possessions. He attacked baseline on the catch and found Mozgov for the dunk. Second Half: He kicked out to Russell off the weave for the corner three. Off the mark on a pass to Young, turnover. He missed an open corner three. He swished a three on the kickout from Randle.

Mozgov -- -- A lot of minutes tonight matching up with Gasol. He did a much better job protecting the paint. A little bit of chemistry with Randle tonight as Julius looked to set him up for some jumpers. Good to see those two developing something together. I think we’ve seen some flashes of Russell and Mozgov developing chemistry, but really not much after that. We really need that second playmaker in the starters, so hopefully the chemistry with those two develops. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 7-12 shooting to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 1 steal, 1 block and 6 fouls in 37:31. He was a +19. The Action: He hit a jumphook spinning to his left. He missed a 17-footer straight away. Soft touch on the turnaround in the post and it fell in. He missed 3-footer off a nice drive and dish from Lou. He fumbled a defensive board out of bounds. He dunked off the drive and dish from Deng. He couldn’t finish a lob from Russell. Second Half: He swished an elbow jumper flashing to the ball on the first possession of the half. He missed a baseline jumper. He hit the FT jumper when Randle found him. He sank the elbow jumper next time down off the Randle drive and dish. Nice challenge on his man in the paint to get a stop. Clarkson hit him with an interior pass for a layup. He missed a 17-footer.

Young -- -- Swish. Swish. Swish. He was hitting from distance out of the gates, looking like Reggie Miller coming off screens for catch-and-shoot threes. His five threes in the first half tied his career high for a half and continued his torrid three shooting. All nine of his first half attempts were threes. Nick gyrating his hips in celebration before he drilled one of those bombs. “We just played as a team,” Nick said. The Stats: He scored20 points on 6-11 shooting from three (2-4 from the line) to go with 2 assists and 4 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He missed a wing three off a swing pass. He sank a wing three off the pass and screen from Randle. He missed a three. Randle drew the D and kicked it back to Nick trailing the break for three. He swished a wing three coming off a Russell screen to take a pass. He hit another three from the other side of the floor next time down. They regrouped during a set as he and Russell exchanged sides of the floor, Nick came up again and we hit him for the three. He swung it to Russell for a wing three. He missed a wing three. He missed a high arching three. Second Half: He drained a wing three off the Randle handoff. He drew FTs when Russell found him on a backdoor cut in early offense, he made both. He missed a wing three. He drew FTs on a probe baseline, he missed both.

Clarkson -- -- I think Luke is trying to light a fire under several guys right now. Luke did a rare thing tonight, he yanked the entire second unit early, wholesale lineup change. Clarkson looked a little steamed getting the hook in the first half after 7 minutes, but Luke said he was proud of the bench not pouting and responding in the second half. The second unit was failing in that second quarter and Luke pulled the plug before more damage was done. The starters came in and imposed themselves and took control of the game. Some interesting moments tonight for Clarkson, he seemed to know when he was missing shots and was crashing the glass instantly on those to get his own misses. He almost had a 5-point play in this one, after making an And-1 three, he missed the FT, but put back in his own miss on the follow. The ref’s said he crossed the FT line too early, but that was close, and Clarkson looked like he reacted to the miss. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-9 shooting (3-6 from three, 1-3 from the line) to go with 7 boards (3 offensive), 3 assists, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 18:24. He was a +5. The Action: He attacked down the middle of the paint to draw FTs, he made one. He pushed up a rebound and hit the floater in the lane. He stepped behind the three line off the catch at the wing and sank the three. Second Half: He swished an open wing three on the kickout from Randle. He sank a tough And-1 three getting undercut on the Randle handoff on the wing, he missed the FT. He missed a tough three next time down, but followed his shot, got the board and fed Mozgov for the layup. He threw a pass out of bounds trying to hit Ingram on a cut (BI might have been held up a little). Great job working the DHO from Black back to him on bounce pass for a dunk. Not close on a pull-up three in transition. He missed a three, followed his shot again, got it and scored the layup. He scored a layup leaking out after a challenge to take a long outlet from Lou.

Williams -- -- I like that Luke went back to him in the last couple of minutes when we were struggling to scratch out those last couple of baskets to put away the Grizzlies. Lou came through with some instance points and we finished closing out Memphis properly. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 4-9 shooting (1-4 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 1 steal and no fouls in 17 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He lobbed to Randle in transition for the score. He missed a wing three. He attacked to his left on a cross-over, got pushed, switched hands and hit the And-1 floater, he made the FT. Bogus foul on a rejection from behind after he recovered on his man. Lost in transition and his man drew FTs. Second Half: He drained a wing three off the flare screen. He missed a wing three. He hit Black for FTs on a lob play. He took a handoff from Clarkson on the secondary break and hit the baseline floater. He missed a layup in early offense next time down. He missed a wing jumper expecting a trip to the line that didn’t come. He drew FTs the next time down on a drive (lucky Randle wasn’t called for a moving screen), he made both. He grabbed a rebound and instantly outlet down court to Clarkson who leaked out for a layup. Not close on a wing three. He drew FTs on the perimeter, he made both. He crossed over and scored a layup.

Ingram -- -- Watch the finish on the layup he scored while crossing over defenders in the fourth quarter. Look at where his hips are when he pulls the ball back over to his right and then where they are when goes off one foot for his layup. That’s what he wasn’t doing to finish early in the season and something PGs do to get past bigs and finish quickly. The D couldn’t recover. So small things, but improvement. He struggled from the FT line tonight, missing four times there. The team as a whole shot a horrible 15-28 from the line. Doing that and still winning by 14, shows just how strong they were playing in all the other areas of the game. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-4 shooting (2-6 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 25 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: Good job keeping his man on his hip on a probe into the paint and he drew FTs getting fouled from behind, he missed both, however. He helped force a man into a turnover on a drive to get a stop. He attacked from the corner and lost control, turnover. He missed a wing pull-up jumper. Second Half: He was fouled trying to throwdown off the Russell drive and dish, he made one FT. He posted up the PG, spun, drew the help and FTs on the reverse, he made one. He changed directions off a shortened dribble to his left to get past one defender, crossed-over to blow by the help D and scored the layup. He hit an open wing jumper to get Randle his triple-double. He missed a wing pull-up left open.

Black -- -- The bench bigs had to match up with Randolph and Gasol at times. In the first half, that wasn’t looking well as Gasol took us in the post for easy scores. Luke mixed up the rotations in the second half and Black had some better moments of activity. Good to see the guards looking for our bigs, too. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 1-4 shooting (4-6 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 10 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He missed a short bank over Gasol. Second Half: He drew FTs on the defensive boards, he made one. He crashed the glass and drew FTs off the Robinson missed runner, he made one again. He missed a layup in a crowd. He dunked off the two-man sequence with Clarkson (a DHO into the PNR for the slam). He missed a tough one-hander in the lane off the screen-roll. He earned FTs on a lob from Lou, he made both this time.

Robinson -- -- Luke gave Tarik and T-Rob the hook early in the first half. Robinson had a -8 in 3:56, Black a -10 in 4:29. Not quite the same effectiveness going up against the bigger lineup of Gasol and Randolph. He ran some more Deng and Mozgov to make up for our bench struggles. Again, the D will be the challenge for Robinson. He’s showed some chemistry on the boards Tarik but tonight was shutout in that department. We need that and a lot of help on D with that second unit from him. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting to go with no boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 4:14. He was a -7. The Action: He missed a baseline jumper on a kickout. Second Half: He missed a short runner off the two-man game.

Walton -- -- Great job on and off the court by Luke to get this W… Lakers up 13-11 when Ingram came in for Young with 5 minutes left… Clarkson in for Deng… Lou in for Russell, Lakers up 1… Lakers missed their first 5 FTs of the game… A 7-0 Laker run forced a timeout… Black in for Mozgov… Robinson in for Randle a possession later… Gasol with a couple of easy ones against those smaller defenders… The Lakers led 22-20 after the first… Luke did a wholesale line change with 9:24 left in the second quarter, all starters in, all bench out, Lakers down 4. Some of the staggered sub patterns leave units on the floor that just don’t click. Loved this… They came in fired up and forced a timeout after a couple of threes to give them a 2-point lead… Nick on fire and the Lakers pulled out to a 6-point lead to force another timeout... Russell raining threes, as well… Great job by that first unit turning things around… The Lakers led 57-48 at the half. They shot 11-19 from three and had 18 assists on their 22 makes with only 3 turnovers... Julius setting up teammates for open looks and the Lakers extended to a 12-point lead to force a timeout… He brought in Ingram and Clarkson for Deng and Young with 5 minutes left up 8… A minute and a half later, they extended to a 15-point lead to force a timeout… Lou in for Russell… Black in for Randle… Mozgov finally out with 1:27 left for Robinson, Lakers up 15… Deng in 17 seconds later for him… The Lakers led 91-77 heading into the fourth… Black, Deng, Ingram, Lou, Clarkson to start… Mozgov back for Black with 9 minutes left, Lakers up 18. (Gasol returned.)… Randle in for Deng… The Lakers led by 19 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… Young and Russell in with a little over 5 minutes to play… The lead down 13 and Luke called a timeout with 3 minutes left… Nick out for Lou… Mozgov fouled out late… Lakers hold on to win…

Thanks DB!

Nice game, Russell and Randle seem to play off each other well, some synergy going on there.

Wow game from Julius, what did Young call him, a juggernaut with handles? When he is engaged he is that.

Hopefully this young team can use the confidence from this nice win and build on it for a little win streak.

Russell and Young were doing their best klay and steph impression. Running behind a bunch of back-screens to get open. To be honest, this is what I thought Russell and Ingram would be doing...Hopefully, in due time with Ingram.

Thanks DB! Great recap and an excellent game! Here's hoping they remember what worked tonight when they match up with Portland later this week.

Thank you, sir!

Reggie Miller Lite. We have two of those, don't we?

What I like most is that Luke is learning as much as anyone. Pulling the whole lineup to stop bleeding, not like some earlier games. Pushing Randle to show some leadership...

Great game. The guys were clearly motivated and hustling out there. Havent seen that since the first couple of games.

What a huge win by that fan as well. Imagine going to a game like last night where everything is going the Lakers way, and then you hit a Half court shot for some big $$$$?

Probably goes down as one of the greatest nights for that guy

It just feels so good when the young core leads us to victories. What a game from Randle and D'angelo.

Instead of another lesson being given, it was a night where a lesson was learned - at least for one night that will lead to many others

Randle seems to be the "straw that stirs the drink" and the heartbeat/heart of the Lakers

Fascinating to watch Luke find the right roles for the guards. DLO appearing to be more in the role and capabilities of a Chauncey Billips noting that his effectiveness as a "catch and shoot" player, in comparison to a Kyrie Irving or Stephen Curry-like abilities while noting his passing abilities

Luke did the Pop Method of taking out the entire lineup on the floor to get everybody's attention

Maybe having Deng, Randle and/or Ingram initialing the offense is one way to keep the offense organized and effective during long dry spells.

Excited to see what happens in Portland

If Luke's antics work on Randle.. we are gonna call him Zeus especially if it helps change our season.

Thanks DB.

I'd like to see that more. The interesting thing was that the starters came in with a little fire after that, so it worked for both units.

Usually, I'm not in favor of the wholesale change unless you need to get a team's attention. But I'm a little worried about the effectiveness of some of these hybrid bench/starter lineups that we have as we stagger subbing in and out our bench. It feels like I'm always waiting for the full bench or the full starters to return (or at least 4 of each).

Thanks for the excellent analysis, as always, DB! Also, thanks for the added commentary regarding the youth of the Lakers/head coach, and the time/patience it will take for things to gel. Those wins earlier in the season got people excited, and made them forget we're at the start of a rebuild. Great win for the Lakers!!!

hate to be a negative nancy but we missed so many freakin free throws.. we are lucky our 3 point shot was on tonight or today could have easily been one of those games we threw away because we couldn't hit a free throw.

Luke did the Pop Method of taking out the entire lineup on the floor to get everybody's attention

With the injuries, lack of consistency from key players and exposed weaknesses of various players have Luke still searching for effective combinations.

With "Sweet Lou" being the only dependable and consistent scorer, often he is part of the lineup that is on the floor at the end of games, Luke is trying to find players that can close/win games (Eye of the Tiger) - whether they succeed or fail (remembering the Kobe air balls).

With DLO and JC not being elite "one-on-one" players (ala Kyrie Irving or Westbrook), they became non-factors when opposing teams turn up the screws in crunch time. Their bad habits of going ISO instead of trusting Luke's system has become the bane of their effectiveness

With Mosgov inability to offensively take advantage of smaller players and not being a legitimate rim protestor has relegated him to being in games when certain players are playing and/or the style being played

If Deng ever makes his presence felt or makes an impact on games, he can be be a good influence. This game with Deng at the top of the key setting up Swaggy and DLO could be the best role for him

When Ingram gets out of the MWP offensive mode (pass on completrlybipen outside shots), he will be ok.

Black and TRob playing together produces needed energy (an oddity considering the age of the young players) but very little offense and defense but a lot of energy. One could imagine that they could be part of a full court press / "change of pace" lineup (ala UCLA) with Swaggy, DLO and Randle

Future is bright. Luke has to find the right roles for each youngster and who are the KILLERS
