Release the Hounds… You wouldn’t have thought this one would turn into a defensive game for the Lakers after the two teams opened the game with a 40-34 first quarter.

The Lakers bottled up the Magic defensively for 2-20 shooting in the third, winning the quarter 19-9. So we go from a 40-34 first quarter to a 19-9 third quarter.

“We just brought the intensity,” Ingram said. He dropped another 17-point game, hitting threes, working the post and showing that all-around game that we anticipate from him.

The team as a whole was making the extra-effort plays on defense and good results followed.

“How many game-winning type of plays did we make today that we haven’t been making throughout the season?” Luke asked. “From Julius’s block, Jordan Clarkson diving out of bounds to save a loose ball. Brandon Ingram’s block. D’Angelo had a strip. These are plays that earlier in the season we’d give up on or just kind of concede those two points.”

The result was a 111-95 win over the visiting Magic with he Lakers taking care of business again, but also taking some steps forward in the learning process, as well.

Russell -- -- Ridiculous stat line across a number of categories…an easy looking 17 points, but add in 8 boards, 7 assists, 3 steals, 1 block? Just a good all-around effort. Some good chemistry with Mozgov in this one. I really think we need to do a more consistent job of making Mozgov and offensive threat because his D has often been subpar. If we can use his screen setting, shooting and finishing ability more to our advantage, then his minutes improve and maybe he’s a little more active on D. Russell and Randle need to make that a point of emphasis. "Mozzy's good. I just have to make the easy play," Russell said. Some excellent passes by Russell to his guys, but there was a play late in the game that reminded you how well he cuts off ball. Clarkson attacked the D and found Russell under the hoop for the layup. We haven’t seen that as much lately, but that’s a little bit of chemistry those two developed last season. Defensively, Russell had some excellent reads in the passing lanes. So a well-rounded game in all aspects. “Just the way he’s been controlling the game and running his position has been really good,” Luke said. He said that he’s liked the way he’s been preparing in practice and the accountability he’s had. He also said Russell has recommitted himself in the weight room. "Trying to mature and treat the game right," Russell said, mentioning he's trying to learn good habits from the vets. He said Luke kind of pushed him into trying to find a good routine. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 7-10 shooting (2-5 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 7 assists, 2 turnovers, 3 steals, 1 block and 3 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He pushed out a rebound and drew FTs in transition, he made one. Nice weakside help on the two-man game to deflect a pass and get a stop. He curled off a screen, took the pass and swished the 16-footer. He missed a three in semi-transition. He got Ibaka switched on him and he swished the corner three. He hit Randle in transition for a layup. Great read when the D overplayed Young on the perimeter, he went backdoor to him for the layup. Another great look, finding Mozgov with a bounce pass for a dunk. He missed a wing three off a swing pass. He had 6 points, 4 boards and 4 assists at the half. Second Half: He lobbed to Mozgov for the dunk off the two-man game (want to see those two do that more). He curled around the screens to come back and take the handoff from Randle and hit the three. He swiped a pass in the paint off a switch with a big. He missed a wing three on the other end. He hit Mozgov flashing to the FT line for the jumper. He attacked Gordon off the dribble and scored the layup. Sweet pass over a defender’s head to Randle cutting and it led to FTs. He worked over the smaller guard in the post and hit the short turnaround. Excellent block from behind on Ibaka who was about to finish at the rim (might have been a foul). He spotted Ingram in the post for an And-1 (had to throw it over Randle trying to post at the elbow). He was stripped off the dribble. He flagged down a flat pass on the perimeter, pushed it out on the break and scored the layup.

Randle -- -- “Our practices are carrying over,” Randle said. We’ve heard that a few times lately. Good practices, good results on the floor. Loved some of the intensity from Randle out there. He had a late-game block and hustle on the recovery to hound Ibaka that got a stop. That was probably the play of the game. When he gets those bursts of turbo energy, good things happen on the floor. He had 11 points and 4 assists in the first quarter to get off to a strong start. He did a good job attacking Ibaka with both his speed and strength, but he also hit from three and midrange early on. Like Russell, Randle also had a well-rounded stat line. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 6-12 shooting (1-1 from three, 6-8 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 5 assists, 2 turnovers, 1 steal, 1 block and 5 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: He attacked across the lane and hit the fade. He missed a step-back on iso next time down. Nice work on the ice D to recover to his man and challenge a three well. He attacked from the wing to his left and hit the short one. He attacked right, got contact and hit the short bank. He attacked in transition but tried to finesse a tough shot in instead of going hard at the rim and he missed. He took the feed from Russell in transition, pumped and powered in the layup. He set up Clarkson for the three off the handoff. He set up Lou for a layup off the two-man game. He missed a transition drive. He drained a wing three at the end of the quarter. He attacked across the lane on two long strides and he drew FTs, he made both. Second Half: He attacked to his right and drew FTs on Gordon, he made one. Sloppy screen on the floppy and he got called for it to erase a Nick three. Way short on a turnaround. He cut backdoor and Russell threaded it to him for FTs, he made one. He crossed over and missed the layup, got it back and Ibaka blocked him. He had a ball knocked off him on the perimeter for a turnover. He drew FTs in transition and made both. He took the pass from Ingram off a dive and scored the layup. Great hustle to reject a shot off the glass in transition, then he hounded Ibaka into a turnover, going to the floor on the play.

Deng -- -- He picked up where he left off in the last one with 8 points in the first half and a couple of threes, but then things quieted down in the second half. He missed a number of good looks before finally sinking a three and looked like he was saying “it’s about time.” We want those strong efforts in both halves. Some more minutes at PF for Deng tonight. That seems to be a regular occurrence as Luke makes up for not having Nance. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-11 shooting (2-6 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards and 1 foul in 31 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He sank a turnaround in the middle of the paint to start the Laker scoring. He sank a corner three on the kickout. He missed a wing three. He jab stepped, rose up and hit the sideline three with some nice arch (often when he has to make a move with his feet it has been a short, flat shot). He airballed a jumphook (might have been hit). Second Half: He missed a corner three on a kickout. He iso’d and airballed on the step-back. He missed an open corner jumper. He attacked the paint and drew FTs, he made one. He missed an open three. He sank a corner three off a good ball reversal. XXX

Mozgov -- -- The size of the Magic (Biyombo and then Vucevic off the bench) most likely meant more minutes for Mozgov. That’s how it played out as we used him on both players. He had 9 points in the first half on 4-4 shooting. Neither of our bench bigs played particularly well, but with Black in foul trouble Mozgov got 17 minutes in the half. That’s often been a game’s worth for him. He picked up his fourth foul in the third quarter and had to sit, but still finished with a 30-minute night. Some great chemistry with Mozgov and Russell at times. Lou had the pass of the night, though, going between a man’s legs to find Mozgov for a dunk. Mozgov didn’t miss a shot tonight. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 7-7 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal and 4 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +16. The Action: He pounded the dribble forever, took contact in the paint and banked in the And-1, he made the FT. He kicked out to Deng for the three. He up-faked, attacked, stopped, bumped a defender off and reversed. He tapped out an offensive board and we’d score an And-1 off the second chance. He cleaned up a Deng airball with a putback. Second Half: He slammed off the lob from Russell off the two-man game. He flashed to the FT line and Russell hit him for the jumper. He blocked a shot but we couldn’t control it. He took the pass on the roll to the hoop and kicked out to Ingram for three. He took a charge in early offense to get the stop. He dunked off the bounce pass from Lou that went through the defender’s legs.

Young -- -- He struggled to get into any rhythm. Luke went wither other guys smartly in the fourth. Nick had the worst turnover of the night, throwing the ball away at the end of the first half to lead to a three-pointer the other way at the buzzer. After the game someone stole one of his socks. That’s about how the night went for him. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-7 shooting (0-4 from three) to go with 1 board, 2 turnovers and 1 block in 19:28. He was a +5. The Action: Poor perimeter pass that Russell couldn’t handle. He couldn’t finish a layup on a drive. He missed a wing three on a kickout. Poor D giving up baseline penetration, a pass and dunk. He cut backdoor against the overplay, took the pass and scored a layup. He didn’t hit rim on a chuck from three next time down. He missed a three straight away. He threw a pass away and it led to a three at the buzzer. Second Half: He missed a deep three in transition. He missed a layup in transition.

Clarkson -- -- No suspension for JC after the scuffle in the last one. Some excellent effort and hustle plays on D. He was hounding his man into turnovers. Combine that with playing under control on offense and Luke gave him the extra run tonight. He and Ingram got to close the game. I’ll take these games over the ones where he scores at a high clip but he’s getting caught in the air for bad shots or turnovers on drives. Much better job playing in control lately. He said he’s still fighting through his illness. He certainly looked good on the court tonight with that reverse jam. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-9 shooting (1-5 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal and no fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +12. The Action: He hounded his man through the screens and eventually forced him into a turnover. He swished a wing three. He missed a wing three. He hit a long runner from the right side in early offense. He got a big on him on a switch, crossed him over, blew past him and reverse jammed. He got tapped on a wing three. Great effort to knock a ball loose and chase it down but he couldn’t finish the breakaway on the other end. Second Half: He missed a three, way short. He hounded his man off the dribble into a turnover. He found Ingram for three. He attacked to his right, spun and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a floater in the lane. He missed a wing three. He shook his man off the dribble, drew the D and hit Russell for the layup.

Williams -- -- He couldn’t hit anything behind the line tonight (going 0-7). He and Nick just didn’t bring their A games tonight, but with the Laker youngsters stepping up, they didn’t need the vets to lead the way in this one. Despite not shooting well, he scratched out double digits with his craftiness. Lou also had a sweet pass between a defender’s legs to Mozgov for a dunk off the two-man game. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-12 shooting (0-7 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 17 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He pushed out the break, no one stopped the ball, so he took it for the layup. He took the handoff from Randle, attacked and got knocked down with no call on the reverse. He missed a three, we got the rebound, got it back to him and he attacked to his right getting the And-1 runner to drop, he made the FT. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He broke down the D and dumped it to Black for the dunk. He threw a pass away when T-Rob left to backdoor the D. He missed a three going to his left. He missed a runner at the buzzer. He missed a wing three. He suckered Meeks into a foul at the three line, he made all three FTs. Sweet pass between a defender’s legs to Mozgov for the dunk. His layup was rejected out of bounds. He missed a corner three on the same possession. He missed an open wing three. He missed a long three out of a timeout. He fired an advance pass out of bounds and Luke sat him.

Ingram -- -- “If you keep working, good things are going to happen,” Ingram said. Yep, yep, yep. “The kid was trying to find a gym to shoot at last night at 8:30 after we already practiced and everything that day,” Luke said. Put in the work and good things happen is right. He’s got a lot of skills. Once he starts sharpening those weapons more, he’s going to be a handful. Tonight, he was able to knock down a couple of big threes early in the fourth (he had 12 of his points in that quarter). He also worked the post for scores over some smaller defenders or he took it to guys like Gordon off the dribble for an And-1 layup. Throw in some excellent passes, as well. Triple threat with that length? He’s only going to get better. Keep working, BI. Keep working. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-9 shooting (2-4 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 3 turnovers, 1 block and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +12. The Action: All kinds of contact on the layup after taking a pass in the paint and he missed. Aggressive attack from the wing, he got body contact into Gordon, switched hands and flipped in the And-1 layup with his left, he made the FT. He threw a kickout out of bounds. He missed a wing three. He missed a corner three. Second Half: He drew a second defender off the dribble and bounced a pass to Black for the dunk. He attacked off the dribble and threw it away. He pushed it out in transition, got into the paint, hung and banked in the short one-hander. He sank a sideline three, stepping behind the line in the corner. He sank another wing three off a kickout from Mozgov. He posted up Meeks, spun and swished the turnaround. He blocked Meeks in transition. He posted up a smaller man in transition and hit the And-1 turnaround, he made the FT. He drew FTs on the perimeter, he made one. He hit Randle on the dive for a layup. Nice challenge on D to force a missed three. He stepped on the sideline, turnover.

Black -- -- Some foul and finishing trouble in the first half. He actually started off the game playing some nice D, forcing turnovers and helping teammates. Then he had the foul issues. The size of the Magic bigs were giving him some issues. Luke yanked him quickly into the fourth for Mozgov and was in his ear. Some nice setups by teammates for him for dunks, but he struggled with some chippies. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-5 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 4 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He poked a ball loose in the paint and it led to a breakaway score. Great switch on help D to force a man to shoot over the backboard on the baseline. Quick first step to his right to get to the middle of the paint and he hit the And-1 hook, he made the FT. He choked a layup at the front of the rim. He traveled off the feed from Lou. He missed a short one in the paint. Second Half: He dunked off the bounce pass from Ingram. He dunked off the drive and dish from Lou. He gave up an And-1 layup to start the fourth.

Robinson -- -- A lot of good help D from the team tonight (we held the Magic to 35 points in the second half). Robinson had a rejection to help Ingram in the post in the second half. Love seeing plays like that to hype the crowd. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting to go with 6 boards, 1 turnover, 1 steal, 1 block and 2 fouls in 10 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He missed a 16-footer. He missed a jumphook in the post next time down. He grabbed the miss by Black and hammered back down a dunk. He was called for the illegal screen on a turning handoff. He choked a lefty layup off the two-man game with Williams but poked a ball loose from behind to help get the ball back. He pushed a rebound up court, couldn’t find a guard to hand it to, so he attacked across the lane and scored. Second Half: Great anticipation to reject Green on help D and save a layup when he was posting up Ingram.

Walton -- -- The teams were tied 15-15 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… Mozgov, Young, Deng out for Black, Ingram and Clarkson score tied with 4 minutes left… The Lakers pushed out to a 10-point lead but struggled getting stops… They Led 40-34 after the first quarter… Black, Robinson, Ingram, Clarkson, Lou to start the second quarter… Mozgov back in for Black who picked up foul trouble, Lakers up 1 with 9:17 left… Lakers up 5 when the timeout came midway through the quarter. Randle, Deng and Russell in to go with Clarkson and Mozgov… Young in for Clarkson shortly later… Time out with 20 seconds left to set something up. We turned it over and the Magic hit a three at the buzzer. Just a poor finish in the last minute… The Lakers led 62-60 at the half… Good start to the half, holding the Magic without a field goal for several minutes (but plenty of FTs)… He brought in Black, Ingram and Clarkson for Mozgov, Young and Deng with the Lakers up 9… The Magic were 2-20 in the quarter, but Lakers only up 11 with 1:42 left… Robinson and Lou in to finish the quarter… The Lakers led 81-69 heading into the fourth… He sat Black quickly in the fourth after giving up an And-1 layup, but a couple of threes by Ingram and the Lakers forced a timeout… Deng in at PF… They led by 16 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… He brought back in Russell and Randle shortly later… Then he called an angry timeout after they gave up a dunk in early offense. The lead was down to 12 with 5 minutes left… He sat Mozgov for Randle at C with the Magic going small… They closed out, highlighted by some good energy on D by Randle… The Lakers are only 2.5 games out of the last playoff spot. Got to keep it rolling…

My love of Brandon Ingram is reaching critical mass. I love watching the kid play basketball. He's smart, hustles and makes the right play. To see him finally drive the ball with success and hit the 3 is awesome ... and he's only 19!

I'm really, really, really hoping that the Lakers brass is patient with these young guys. Ingram, Russell and Randle have all shown enough to keep the young core together. As good as a guy like Butler is, his timeline doesn't make sense with our team. Let's let this young core grow under Luke and Co and prepare for the next Laker championship!

Great chemistry. I laughed when DLO took off from the bench and ran all the way across the court to chest bump Clarkson after that reverse jam. DLO had a turnover free game going until very late. Second bobble in particular looked rather embarrassing, and next trip up the court I noticed Clarkson waving DLO off the ball so he could take it down low. What did JC do? Feed to DLO for a ridiculously easy score. I think JC had that planned all along. His way of saying shake it off bro you got this.

LOVE the way Randle reversed a teammate's mistake with that block and steal! Also, good hard foul on Ibaka after Serge got away with shoving Deng to the floor. These guys are looking out for each other!

Finally - Brandon Ingram - wow. Lotta fight in that Tiny Dog!

Awesome game!!! Loved loved LOVED the 3rd Q performance in particular. Here are thoughts on our young "Big 3":

D'Lo - loved the 3 steals. The entire game I felt he was giving extra attention to D that has been missing in the past.

Randle - WOW. The entire team is feeding off his energy, man on a mission right now. Very impressive.

Ingram - Brandon bad AT ss doing everything right

Team wise, I like how the team has been performing even when Nick and Lou are not on fire. Promising growth. Hope it continues, looking forward to when Nance comes back!

Agreed. We should have close to a max in 2018. No need to trade anyone imo. A panic trade may net us wins in the short term but does nothing for us in the grand scheme of things.

If we can win 35 this season and see a win total in the 40's next season...look out. A bevy of young 20's studs pulling that win total is exactly the squad for an uber FA to jump aboard. *ahem* see my sig.

want to compare them to young Thunders:

Randle vs Ibaka
Ingram vs KD
Russell vs Harden

And I think we have better FO knowing to assemble several veterans like Mozgov, Deng, Young and Williams to play with them. I also think we have a better coach in Luke to assemble them into a group and play with their strength.
