Wow, so San Diego, the 2nd most populous city in CA has only the Padres?

You know what to do Clippers...

Waiting to hear 100% that they're gone, but I'm incredibly sad right now.

Won't be the same not having a team from the city I was born and raised in to cheer for (don't care about baseball much and the Padres barely qualify as a professional team anyways)

Well, the difference is the Chargers give themselves a chance and then choke all the time. The Padres are just pathetic

lakersken80 made a good case for Stan Kroenke wanting them here. They'll fill seats, be the football equivalent of the Clippers, always second. If the Raiders came they would be LA's team, the Chargers never will be #1.

I'm not sure that the Chargers DON'T have an opportunity to gain a foothold here. The Coliseum was empty as hell by the end of the year. This was in the very first year back of NFL football in LA. Simply put, if the product is awful, LA fans are not going to show up. (Not unless there's a built-in history with years of goodwill, like the Dodgers and Lakers have.) The Chargers have a much better chance to put a better product on the field more quickly than the Rams do, at least in my humble opinion. The Rams' owner may own the stadium, but if the Chargers are also playing in it and doing far better, they can create a buzz in this area. Let's be honest: is there really any Rams buzz in this area? If there is, I don't think there's much of one.

I also don't blame Spanos. They actually tried to get a stadium deal done, so much so that it was literally in the voters' hands. (This is as opposed to Kroenke, who rebuffed the city council's efforts at the end and wanted to get out.) Had Spanos' true motivation been to leave at all costs, they wouldn't have even had something go to a vote. The people didn't want the team enough. And that's fine, if that's what they wanted. But I don't want to hear about their fans crying. They didn't want the team enough. And they wouldn't have even been the ones paying the taxes.

Agreed. The Rams foothold is beyond no longer a sure thing.

Rams too weak. Chargers could grab some fanbase but would be flimsy. Raiders moving to Vegas not here with disgusting Sheldon Adelson playing a big part - just a nightmare all around. I can't root for Vegas Raiders. At least Niners suck so that's something. NFL, why hast thou forsaken me?

The problem was the tax initiative was a joke. I can see why the voters turned it down. Unlike LA, I don't think San Diego has the power to compel the NFL to come back since the TV market is ranked something like 28th in the US despite it being the 8th largest city. However, I think if the Chargers leave and suddenly the voters get the urge to fund the stadium there a really small chance they might go back considering they are only paying a lease at the Coliseum and at the Inglewood stadium. They would have San Diego to their own. There is a case like that similar to the Browns. But that it is still a longshot. I think San Diego will end up with only the Padres and maybe an expansion MLS as pro sports teams in the city. Too bad.

You can probably blame the Clippers for that. When they saw them being sold for $2 billion dollars they saw $$$$$$$$$$$ signs in their eyes. Even though the Clippers have a terrible history, they play in the second largest TV market and a still ever growing population here in the LA metropolitan area. And they were right. The Rams were ranked #28 in team value in 2015. In 2016 after they moved, #6.
2015:

2016:

Even though Dean Spanos is disappointed in leaving San Diego, his team value would increase in coming to LA. Not to mention the players would become more recognized in a higher profile market.
