Overrun and Overwhelmed… Veteran squads will pick apart the fledgling Laker roster. We’ve seen it with regularity this season. So no surprise the Spurs ended up with a season-high 72 points in the first half – the Lakers in an 18-point hole at halftime.

The Spurs didn’t relent – not under Pop -- and would set a new season high in the 134-94 blowout. The lack of defensive effort by the Lakers probably made the Alamo ghosts of Davy Crockett and James Bowie shake their heads in disgust. When Pau is attacking from the three line to hammer a dunk on your sad D, there’s not a lot to analyze here. Is our D soft? Yes. Does it lack intelligent effort? Yes.

The Lakers were just overrun and overwhelmed.

“It’s beautiful to see championship teams,” Luke said. “How they came out after one loss, how that made them play, how sharp they were tonight. There’s a lot to learn from being in that game, watching that game, being a part of that game.”

Aside from that schooling, the game actually got a little interesting (not close, just interesting) when Ivica Zubac came in late in the third quarter. Luke ran him with Russell, Ingram and Randle to give the young guys some developmental time together. Hopefully, we’ll be seeing more of him.

Russell -- -- I liked the timeout in the fourth quarter by Luke to yap and Russell and Randle for not battling on the defensive glass. Yeah, you’re down huge, but minutes are minutes when you’re young. You need to make the most of them and improve what you do. Luke was also irked that the team looked like they gave up, but I don’t think that’s what his conversation with Russell/Randle was about. They’ve got to learn how to bring it consistently. “Everything starts with me,” Russell said. “Us not getting off to a great start, started with me. Us not getting stops early, started with me. So it’s something I’ve got to do better.” Those two need to understand that. Set the tone on both ends. Set the tone and try to keep it throughout the game. He’s had some good games against the Spurs, but a lackluster one tonight. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-13 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -36. The Action: He attacked the paint and was blocked. He sank an elbow jumper on the kickout from Randle. He lost his man and hit the elbow pull-up. He put his man in jail and hit the short floater over the help. He missed a wing jumper getting hit on the arm with no call. He missed a wing pull-up jumper. He missed a wing three. He couldn’t finish at the rim on a drive. He hit Randle rolling off the screen for a dunk. He tried to thread a pass under the hoop, it was picked off and then he fouled on a halfcourt heave at the buzzer to give up three FTs, painful. He had 6 points on 3-8 shooting and 1 assist. Second Half: He missed a wing jumper. He attacked and missed the backhand layup at the rim. He sank a corner three on an inbounds. He missed a three on the pull-back dribble. He missed a short one in the paint. He bounced to Ingram diving for a dunk.

Randle -- -- “We didn’t come ready to play,” Randle said. One of the lone bright spots in the first half of this one was Randle’s 17 points on 7-9 shooting. Good job at times eating up the space defenders were giving him then hitting the short jumper instead of attacking a crowd. If you back off him, this is the area where he’s going to get better at making team’s pay. Right now, he abuses that space with his speed, either by attacking hard or by creating more space by running out for the DHOs and kick backs before Randle’s man can react to help. Throw the jumper in with that and that’s where you get to those 30-point games. He’ll have too much speed to stay tight on him and too much impact with the jumper to stay off him. Combine that with everything else and defenses will be in for a tough night. Of course, he’s also got to learn to defend the other end himself. The Lakers were outrebounded by 17 tonight. Randle had just 6. “I could have done better,” he said. Yep, there were at least three or four plays where he wasn’t putting a body on someone and we paid the price. The one run where we cut it to 4 in the second quarter tonight was partially behind a little two-way effort and energy from Randle when he came in the game. Need more of that. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 8-13 shooting (6-7 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a -30. The Action: He attacked the rim strong and drew FTs on the first possession, he made both. No box out and he gave up a putback. He kicked out on a nice passing sequence to Deng for the three. He sank a 20-footer from the wing. He probed baseline in early offense and kicked to Russell for the elbow jumper. He ate up some space Pau was giving him and hit the FT jumper (good job getting to a high percentage spot on the floor). He missed a drive left. He spun and banked the turnaround jumper in the lane. He grabbed the board, pushed it up, attacked to his right from the wing and hit the And-1 fade across his body, he made the FT. He jumped on a pass to knock it loose, leaked out for the outlet and dunked. He ate up the space they were giving him and hit the 12-footer. He attacked in transition but couldn’t finish. Nice screen on the perimeter and Russell rewarded him with a pass for the slam. Second Half: He forced Aldridge into a brick in the post. Nice challenge on Parker’s drive to get a stop. He powered in a layup off the feed from Clarkson on the baseline. He was rejected on a layup. He missed a layup trying to scoop it in under a man. He gave up another offensive board and score. He pushed it out and fed Zubac for the dunk. He spun in the post and drew FTs on the reverse, he made both. He pushed out with speed and drew FTs, he made one.

Deng -- -- Sheesh. Just 3 points combined from Deng and Mozgov. And certainly not any D to make the lack of production a non-issue. This was more like one of the games we saw earlier in the season from him. I thought his shot looked a little flat at times, as well. Ugly game. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-5 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 1 foul in 19:27. He was a -27. The Action: He drained a corner three on a kickout. He deflected a pass. Nice challenge on Lee to force an airball. He attacked off the three line, drew the D and hit Black for the layup. He missed a wing three. Turnover forcing a pass that wasn’t there. He missed a flat baseline pull-up. He missed a pull-up elbow jumper. Second Half: He missed a wing three in early offense.

Mozgov -- -- The Laker starters were outscored by 39 points. Mozgov was scoreless in his 10 minutes. He picked up two offensive fouls/turnovers in the first quarter, so his offense was even worse than the donut. His only saving grace on that end was his offensive rebounding. He managed some of those tip outs. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-4 shooting to go with 4 boards (3 offensive), 2 turnovers, 1 block and 3 fouls in 10 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He attacked baseline, couldn’t power over Pau, got it back and missed the jumphook. He swatted a drive. He missed a short one. Second Half: He tapped out a couple offensive boards and it led to a three. He bricked a FT jumper.

Young -- -- “They ain’t supposed to beat us like that,” Nick said. For sure. Even with as good as they are, we needed more of a fight from our guys. Nick was a -26 in just 14 minutes. Our starters just got stomped. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-6 shooting (2-4 from three) to go with 1 assist and 2 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a -26. The Action: He missed a sideline three. He attacked down the lane and was too hard on the finish. He sank a pull-up from the top of the key over Parker. He missed a corner three over the zone. He sank a three coming off the weakside screens. Second Half: HE drained a wing three.

Clarkson -- -- “They made us pay for every mistake we made,” Clarkson said. Well said. That’s the thing with vet teams versus the Lakers. We make mistakes that vet teams will capitalize on. He doesn’t mean turnovers. We had only 9 and Clarkson didn’t have any turnovers again. I thought he should have been credited with one, but he’s been playing much better in that regard. He’s also not getting caught in bad situations like he had been earlier in the season. The mistakes we typically make and what he’s talking about are mental and effort errors defensively. The guards and bigs not on the same page or helping each other properly, poor rotations, not matching up, allowing the Spurs to get to their spots with ease. Give a team like the Spurs daylight and they kill you. Decent game offensively from JC, although he probably could have moved the ball more. I feel like he might be due for a big game soon. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 6-11 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, no turnovers and 3 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He missed a floater from the left side. He forced up a 17-footer off the dribble. He set up Tarik off the dribble for FTs. He saw an open baseline and drew FTs on the attack, he made one. He swished a baseline jumper off the inbounds. He missed a wing three. He sank a quick-fire wing jumper off the screen. He missed a step-back pull-up three. He missed a flat pull-up jumper, leaning forward too much. He lost a perimeter pass, unforced error. He attacked the rim and drew FTs to just beat the shotclock, he made just one again. He attacked to his right and hit the floater. He hit Randle for the layup. He sank a pull-up from the wing. He scooped a layup around a defender, working on the two-man game. Nice feed to Zubac for the layup. He scored a layup off the slow backdoor cut play with Huertas.

Williams -- -- Deuces wild for Lou with 2 makes, 2 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls. Not a lot of impact in this one. I thought the Spurs did a good job not letting him get to his left and playing him to drift that way on the rare occasion he was able to. He still scratched out some points from the line, but give the Spurs D some credit for defending him well. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 2-7 shooting (1-3 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He missed a three off the high screen. He went too early at the end of the quarter and drew FTs with 7 seconds left, he made both. He missed a pumping jumper. He drained a wing three off the loop. He crashed the glass and the board fell right in his hands so he scored the layup. Second Half: He was blocked on a fade. He drew FTs on the perimeter and made both. He drew more FTs on the perimeter reach and made one. He missed a wing three and then another next time down court before giving up a layup. He was blocked on a drive. He was knocked over and gave up a layup.

Ingram -- -- Wish we had involved him a little more. It seemed like there were more of those possessions where he’d give up the ball and never see it again. Luke mentioned how when the team gets down we start to panic and try to do things individually. That’s usually when he gets lost in the shuffle or ends up adding a little more gasoline to that problem himself. When the ball is moving and moving back to him and he can be put in a position to make a quick decision, that plays to his strengths. He and Russell have good read and react skills and hopefully will really show those off as they mature. In transition, he needs to be a little more aware of what’s going on. He had a pass hit him in the back changing ends at one point and has had more than a few poor reads in transition D, including tonight. Some rookie mistakes. Ingram played through a sprained left wrist. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-7 shooting (1-3 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 1 block and 2 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He swished a quick-fire three off the swing pass. He drew FTs on a pull-up jumper at the elbow, he made one. He wasn’t paying attention in transition and got hit in the back with the pass. He outlet to Randle for the breakaway dunk. Second Half: He airballed a jumper. He missed a corner three. He fell attacking off the dribble, turnover. He blocked a three fighting through a screen. He was fouled on the perimeter for FTs, he made one. Not close on a 17-footer. He missed a wing three. Nice dive to the hoop and Russell hit him for the dunk (that was just a read by him, but I’d like to see more plays that have him going to the rim off ball). He sank a wing jumper (should have been an And-1).

Black -- -- Mozgov and Black were outplayed tonight by Zubac. Not much of a game from Tarik. He had some points set up for him by guards and also had a putback battling on the glass. He needs his buddy Nance to return to give the second unit more of their mojo. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-3 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He drew FTs on the drive and dish from Clarkson, he made one. He scored a layup off the drive and dish from Deng. Nice recovery to his man and he drew the charge. He battled for the offensive board, missed the putback back, grabbed the miss and muscled in the layup against three Spurs. Second Half: He fumbled a pass away, unforced.

Zubac -- -- We were down 28 in the third when Luke brought him in. Good to see Zubac get some run. It looked like had a good practice in the mix with the rotation and starters. I think we need to keep him on the active roster to be ready for more places like this where we can get something worthwhile out of garbage time. “He’s got a great feel for the game,” Luke said, mentioning they are very high on him and pleased with the weight he lost. I’m not worried about him offensively. He can work the post, finish around the rim, hit the jumper, move the ball. All of that. What we want is minutes defensively against NBA players. Luke mentioned having the ability to switch out on guards and hold his own. In the summer, you knew that was going to be an issue this year. Can he eat up the space and challenge, can he stay in front of smaller players enough for help to recover or get a good challenge in. Tonight, I thought he looked strong defensively. He positioned himself well for the most part. He had some great challenges (better than any of our other bigs tonight, to be honest). He broke up a couple of lobs with some excellent reads. Definitely some quality minutes on D from him tonight. Show me more. We need a guy who can alter shots and anchor the paint on D. “They were prepared for us and they really wanted it,” Zubac said. He said he can run more and is in better condition after playing in the D League. Free Zubac! The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-7 shooting to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 2 steals, 1 block and 1 foul in 14:30. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He set the down screen for Clarkson, took the return pass and scored the layup. He rejected a big under the hoop. He couldn’t hold a pass from Russell on the roll, turnover. He hit the runner off the two-man game with Huertas. Great read to break up a lob pass, then run the floor for Randle to find him for the dunk. He sank a 16-footer. He swiped a lob pass to ignite a break. He missed a baseline jumper. He missed the jumper off the inverse play. Nice challenge on a drive to force a miss. Nice extra feed off the two-man game to T-Rob for a dunk.

Huertas -- -- Some extended garbage time run for Huertas. He got a surprising amount of shots up during that time, maybe a two or three he shouldn’t have taken, which is rare to see from him. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 0-6 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 assists and no fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He missed a runner. He hit Clarkson on the slow cut play for the layup. He hit Zubac off the two-man game for the score. He airballed a short floater. He missed a wing jumper. He drew FTs and made both. He missed a spinning elbow jumper, wild shot. He missed a wing three.

Robinson -- -- He came in for Mozgov late in the first half after he picked up his third foul and then early in the third when Luke bench everyone to start the second half. So a few moments before the game turned to total garbage, but really he had no impact. The Spurs front court took us apart regardless of who was defending. T-Rob was the guy Pau posterized. Needed more energy from him. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-2 shooting to go with 3 boards, 2 assists and 2 fouls in 10 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: He battled for an offensive board and scored the short one. Second Half: Pau attacked off the dribble and dunked on him. He dunked off the interior feed by Zubac.

Calderon -- -- In with 5 minutes left of garbage time. Nothing to report as Huertas was the guy mostly ball handling. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 1 board in 5 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He missed a pull-up from the top of the key.

Walton -- -- Lakers got no stops early and trailed 20-13 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… Mozgov out for Black after picking up his second foul… Down 12 when Clarkson and Ingram came in for Deng and Young… Russell out for Lou, then Randle for Deng, so bench and Deng on the floor… The Lakers trailed 36-24 after the first quarter… They cut it to 11, but gave up a dunk to trail by 15 again when Luke called the timeout. He brought Randle back in… Energy from Randle helped cut the lead to 4… Down 8 midway through the quarter, he brought in Russell and Mozgov for Black and Clarkson… Mozgov quickly picked up his third foul and sat for Robinson. So starters and Robinson… Lakers losing ground again… Ingram in for Robinson, Lakers down 16 with 1:16… The Lakers trailed 72-54 at the half… A quick timeout by Luke as they trailed by 21 after a couple minutes. Luke benched the starters out of that at the 9:30 mark… He brought Randle back for Robinson a minute later… Lakers down huge… Zubac, Ingram, Clarkson, Russell, Huertas down 28… The Lakers trailed 106-75 heading into the fourth. 106… Zubac, Randle, Clarkson, Russell, Huertas to start the fourth… He called a timeout to yap at Russell and Randle for not battling on D… Russell and Randle out with 5 minutes left… “We gave up too quickly,” Luke said. “We gave up as if all this is going to be too hard for us tonight kind of attitude, which is not okay.”

Thanks DB - Great write up as always.

Welp. At least we have a silver lining.

I've been getting more and more frustrated with Mozgov lately, seeing how weak we are at defending the rim. Moz is a legit seven foot center and vet leader yet today I saw him once again with his hands down and a cutter trotting right past him like he wasn't in the same building.

I'd nearly forgotten why I got so excited about Zubac in summer league. I wrote it off as weak SPL competition, but tonight he showed he's worth a look, and not a worthless rookie when pitted against a legit NBA team. Legit rim protection would make a huge difference for this team.

Thanks, DB!

What a bad effort by Lakers. Just outplayed. I see bad habits (a tendency for iso plays) from last year. Luke has not managed to weed them out yet. How on earth could this team start to play decent D? With the athleticism of these players there is just no excuse.

Was this the best game of Zubac so far? Great sign if you can bring your best against Spurs.

Thanks! What a brutal season this is turning out to be. At least Luke has a positive spin on things.

Its also depressing watching Pau go off on our team. He would've fit so well with this roster and from what i understand we had the chance to sign him

Would have been a good mentor to the young guys.

Thanks for the write up!!

An exam was given by the Spurs and the Lakers received a "D"

Young, inexperienced and talented players are inconsistent that often play to the level of the competition. When players disappear, seemingly accepting being embarrassed and not angry - what should others think

With players and supposedly leaders saying that they were being taken to the woodshed to be spanked and not doing anything, it provides additional evidence on who as the emotional and mental strengths to be leading.
Note: they need a "Kirk (Gibby) Gibson-like force to wake them up

Our talented players are being "taught" with great clarity that they did not have any talent that can take over games and they need to embrace Luke's "System" to be successful.

"Love" that DLO is embracing The Beard's (Harden) work ethics on defense.

Deng - was he playing last night, was he in th building, was he suppose to be the leader?

Mosgov - with the team not looking to take advantage of Pau's defensive inefficiencies and Pau's great offensive skill set - result was automatic

Game confirmed that the talented Swaggy and LouWill can be effectively shutdown and forcing them to depend on DLO and Randle is a great way to get victories against this team

As was mentioned on the broadcast, team needs somebody on the court to keep people accountable to "playing the right way"

Maybe Luke will be taking a page out of. The The Zen Master Coaching Book by letting the starting lineup learn on the court of face a totally embarrassing defeat and keeping them on the court at the end of the game to "motivate" them to embrace The System

Game like this is where we need our veterans (Moz, Deng, Swaggy, Lou) to be a stabilizing force for our young players. 21 points total from that quartet won't get it done. Notice how Spurs have mostly veterans starting.

Yikes! As much as the team has improved this year from last, they still have games (sometimes halves) where they just stop competing and sink into the loser mentality.

Given how much the game has changed, could this be more of an indication of the New NBA?

The fact that nobody is getting MAD is the biggest problem, hence falling back on the excuse that it is just part of the process. Learning how to lose is NOT something we want

The logical choices for leaders and/or people that say they have aspirations for leadership is

DLO

Randle

Deng

If those three are not up to it, time for MWP to get into the lineup. He might foul out in one quarter, but the team will have some fight (translation: "DOG")

You aren't going to win a lot of games when you allow the opponent to shoot 60% from the floor. Luke needs to find a way to build defensive pride because it has been non-existent.

Well, Mozgov played against Aldrige and shut him down until refs started to give stupid calls.
Rundle played against Pau and couldnt close him, obviously.

Zubac played in garbage time so its silly to compare him with other bigs that played in competitive game.
