Self-Inflicted Wounds… The End of quarters hurt the Lakers tonight. They gave up 7 points at the buzzer in the first three quarters. They cost themselves 5 of those points by not getting the last shot of the quarter off when they could have.

Play with fire and the basketball gods will punish you.

In a close game, all those points came back to bite them. The final backbreaker was a shotclock buzzer beating three the Pistons sank with 30 seconds left. That gave them a 4-point lead and that was that.

The Lakers had some three-heavy shooting down the stretch, coming up empty on shot after shot, falling 102-97. If only they had those 5 points back from self-inflicted wounds on end-of-quarter turnovers.

“We didn’t play a whole 48 minutes locked in and that’s why it bit us in the end,” Randle said.

Russell -- -- Aggressive start to this one. He worked his way for midrange jumpers or layups in the paint for 14 points in the first half. He came out strong in the second half, as well, but sat on the bench until 2:46 left in the game. Thus you have the 20 points in just 26 minutes. Hard to warm back up after that and he missed a couple of three attempts (one rattling down and out). He also missed a 35-foot heave at the end of the game, so the poor numbers from three probably a little deceptive in how effective he was. Much better game from Russell tonight. Really like the number of times he was able to score at the rim. His midrange is looking more consistent as I think he’s not looking to draw fouls as much on those. A few too many turnovers, the highlight that will be replayed all night was that halfcourt inbounds chuck that was then thrown in for a 60-footer at the buzzer. Regardless, solid game from him after the poor outing last time. “We didn’t bring it as a team,” Russell said. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 9-18 shooting (0-5 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 3 assists, 5 turnovers, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. The Action: He attacked through the perimeter pressure and scored a layup at the rim. He missed a three on iso. He worked off the high screen and hit the open elbow jumper. He swiped a pass and hit Young on the break for a three. He missed a leaner in the paint. He curled into the lane off a handoff and scooped in a layup. He drew a charge on D to get a stop. With the clock low, he attacked off the high screen, weaved through traffic and hit the short one in the paint. He was stripped by a big, then fouled him for the And-1 on the break. He hit a 17-footer off the floppy. He buried an elbow jumper next time down with man on him. He missed a pull-up at the top of the key next time down. He faced up in the post and swished the jumper. His long chuck down court at the end of the half was picked off for a 60-foot three. He had 14 points on 7-11 shooting, 4 boards and 2 assists. Second Half: He hit a jumper working off the wing screen. In the post, he threw an over the head pass to Mozgov slipping the screen for a dunk. He was called for a charge on a kickout. Quick attack down the middle of the paint for a layup. He airmailed a cross-court pass out of bounds. He missed a pull-up getting some contact. He got tapped on a drive. He got tapped on a wing three with a minute left. He missed a pumping three. He was fouled on the offensive glass and made both FTs. He missed a 35-footer at the end of the game.

Randle -- -- Just 2 points in this one. They were on a beastly dunk after getting his man on his heels with some muscle early in the game. Then, he was pretty much MIA on that end of the court. He had some pushouts and set a few screens, but couldn’t finish around the rim and didn’t get much love from the refs on a couple of those. Some of those pushouts he got caught in the air but was able to find guys trailing the break for scores. His rebounds were back in double digits again. Luke used him at the C spot to close the game. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-6 shooting to go with 10 boards, 4 assists, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He attacked baseline and muscled a dunk right over his man, beastly play. He missed a fade across the lane, just beating the shotclock. Nice challenge on a baseline jumper. He lost the handle trying to create off the dribble. He got hit trying to power up, no call on the miss (he picked up a tech). He missed a jumphook in the paint. Second Half: He was blocked on a layup attempt. He was called for an offensive foul using an off arm to clear a defender on a lob pass I guess, seemed pretty bogus. He found Nick on the break for the layup. He traveled, indecisive on what he wanted to do. He choked a layup with his right. He pushed out with speed and luckily Clarkson cut behind him to take the pass and score.

Deng -- -- Well, the day off didn’t seem to help him offensively. He was ineffective offensively once again. Similar games in the last few to how he was playing earlier in the season. The Lakers need their vets to be consistent because the young guys won’t be. He’s fairly consistent defensively and had some moments on that end of the floor. Wish he could have gotten a better challenge on that three at the buzzer with 30 seconds left, but he was scrambling a bit. That was the backbreaker defensively. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-6 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 7 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a +12. The Action: He missed a wing three on our first possession. He attacked across the lane and hit the short one for the Lakers first hoop. He missed a corner three. Poor finish on the break, he wanted the foul. Second Half: He tried to create off the dribble and was rejected. He didn’t get a shot off trying to step behind the three line, shotclock violation, uggh. He pumpfaked and missed a three. He swiped a pass in the corner.

Mozgov -- -- First off, some great screens for Russell to work off of. That allowed Russell to get into the paint with space or speed. He also had some good moments creating points for himself. Kind of surprised we didn’t go back to him in the fourth. He tweaked his shoulder, so maybe that was part of it, but Luke often goes small late. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-7 shooting to go with 3 boards, 2 turnovers and 1 block in 22 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He missed a short one with his left on a drop step in the post. He sank a wing jumper on a kickout. He scored on a step through in the post. Some good challenges in the post on iso. He missed a turnaround jumper. Second Half: He faced up and lost the dribble. He swatted some dribble penetration. He slipped a screen, Russell found him and he jammed. Quick up-fake and he attacked baseline for the reverse. He airmailed a kickout, right out of bounds trying to avoid a charge. He missed a baseline jumper. He picked up a tech from the bench.

Young -- -- Man, saw some brief flashes of Nick’s poor D out there in a few spots. He said they didn’t do a good job keeping the pressure on them defensively like they started the game. He struggled from three, making just one on a pass in transition that had him going to his left. I want to see a few more of those sequences with Nick and Dlo coming off the floppy set with Deng up top. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 2-7 shooting (1-6 form three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 1 assist and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He missed a heave from three. He was fouled on a wing three, he made all three FTs. He sank a three in transition. He airballed a three out of a timeout. He missed a wing three. He missed a wing three, short. Second Half: Horrible angle on D and he gave up a layup. He missed a three in transition. He took the pass from Randle on the break and scored the layup.

Clarkson -- -- One of those games that he’s done a good job avoiding lately. While he had decent scoring numbers, those are a little (just a little) deceptive when some of the misses are on wild drives or he gets caught O.C. for turnovers. It wasn't as bad as earlier this year, but I'm going to be hyper critical of it because he’s improved that aspect of his game the last few weeks after struggling earlier in the season. I don't want him slipping back into that. If he wants to develop the trust with coaches to finish games and even be a closer, then he’s got to reel that stuff in. Hopefully, those few moments in this were just a bump in the road and he goes back to the cleaner JC we’ve seen the past few weeks. He said the Pistons physicality was making them take tough shots. He was hobbling a little after a drive in this one. “It was just a little tweak. Minor thing,” Clarkson said. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 7-12 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 23:32. He was a -7. The Action: He lost his man on a change of directions and hit the pull-up 16-footer. He attacked the paint and scooped in an And-1 layup, he made the FT. He got tapped on a pull-up jumper. He pushed out in transition, elevated well around the D and scored. He missed a pull-up three. He made a tech FT. Out of control on a drive and he threw it away (haven’t seen that for a while). Second Half: He missed a wing three. He swished a wing three off the Zubac screen. He forced up a tough layup off the weave. He attacked and hit Zubac for the score. He blew past his man for a layup. He was stripped trying to iso. Great job bailing Randle out in transition with a cut behind him to snag a pass and score the layup. He attacked off the screen and scored a layup next time down. He hit the side of a backboard on a drive. He then gave up an And-1 jumper on the other end.

Williams -- -- He was scoring at a super-efficient rate in this one and then went 1-6 down the stretch. So he was 6-8 prior to that. That finish put a tarnish on what was a strong game. Again, we went to that Russell/Williams backcourt in the final minutes and that’s just been clunky this weekend. You could make an argument that it was a long stint for Lou and he just didn’t have his legs in the end. The Stats: He scored 26 points on 7-14 shooting (5-9 from three, 7-8 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 4 assists, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He got a kind bounce on a flat three in early offense. He attacked too soon at the end of the quarter, lost it, dunk the other way. He hit Black cutting for an And-1. He swished a floater on a drive left. He captured an arm on the reach, rose up and drew FTs from three, he made all three. He got drilled on a three, which dropped in as he hit the floor, he made the And-1 FT for the 4-point play. He had 12 points on 3-3 shootingSecond Half: He missed a floater. He swished a corner three. He missed a drifting three. He spotted Zubac running the floor for the layup. He sank a deep three to beat the shotclock. He worked off a great screen from Zubac and hit the And-1 fade, he made the FT. He missed a fade. He attacked the paint and got knocked down, he made both FTs. He missed a three on a kickout. That didn’t slow him down as he drilled a three working off the screen next time down with 3 minutes left. He airballed a layup or floater on the baseline, not sure if that slipped or what. He missed a three trailing the break next time down. He missed a wing three.

Ingram -- -- “They took the momentum after that bad second quarter,” Ingram said. Another one of those 1-X shooting games. He went for a while avoiding them, but this is what youth does. The Lakers have great young trio of Russell, Randle and Ingram, who should grow into a core for the team, but if you don’t think there will be ups and downs, you’re nuts. They struggle because Ingram can give you a good game, but Randle and Russell might not. Or tonight, Russell played some impact ball but Ingram and Randle didn’t. Next game might be Randle’s turn. Fans seems to react a little too strongly to all the ups and the downs. It’s going to be a bumpy ride…enjoy it. One day, they are going to be very, very good. The Pistons tried to pick on Ingram a little in the post down the stretch. They got a couple scores off it. “The fact that he wants those challenges and the fact that he doesn’t start cowering away from it, I’ll take that from my guy anytime,” Luke said. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 1-7 shooting (0-1 from three, 3-6 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 3 assists, 1 block and no fouls in 28 minutes. He was a -19. The Action: He attacked, took contact on a bump and threw in the And-1 from the FT line, he made the FT. He was blocked as he elevated at the rim. He missed a wing pull-up. He attacked to his right, hung and was short on the 6-footer. It looked like he got a piece of a drive. Second Half: He missed a corner three. He couldn’t finish a drive. He nearly lost the ball against pressure D, was rising up to heave a pumping three and was fouled, he made only one FT. Great hustle to grab a Clarkson miss and it led to a three from Lou. Down 2, he was fouled on a layup attempt with 1:33 left, he made just one FT. Nice help D on Russell’s man to force a miss.

Black -- -- He tried to plant on a roll to the hoop and rolled his left ankle in the third quarter. That had him going to the locker room and limiting his minutes tonight. Hard to say how severe, but he walked off the court reasonably and came back saying he was good to go. Sometimes you can play on them, so we’ll have to see how it reacts after the game. Good job working his way for a few scores in the first half. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-2 shooting (2-3 from the line) to go with 2 boards and 3 fouls in 11:29. He was a -8. The Action: He worked the post for a left handed jumphook. He took the pass on the screen-roll and powered in the And-1, he made the FT. He attacked middle, drop-stepped, gathered himself and drew FTs, he made one.

Zubac -- -- Strong weekend for him. “It was good to see him out there in some real minutes against one of the league’s best centers and I though he held his own,” Luke said. Black rolled his ankle in the third quarter, so Luke brought Zubac in as the bench big. So he went from a Laker game to a D-fenders game and back to a Laker game this Saturday and Sunday. The question for Luke will be when does he start giving Zubac more minutes to develop? He was making an impact on both ends. He altered shots around the rim, blocking 2 and disrupting others in his 8:24. Then he was a big target for teammates for a couple of scores on the other end. So how do you fit him in? Mozgov has a big contract, played well tonight. Black has been pretty key to the second unit. As the Lakers slip further away from playoff contention, the minutes for Ivica should go up. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-4 shooting to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 2 blocks and no fouls in 8:34. He was a +1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nice challenge on a layup to get a miss on his first defensive stand. He was blocked on a layup attempt for a jumpball. He hit the one-hander off the drive and dish from Clarkson. He blocked some more dribble penetration. Good rim run after his man missed on one, Lou hit him ahead of the pack and Zubac scored the layup. He disrupted another drive. His outlet pass was picked off.

Walton -- -- The Lakers got out to an 11-3 start with Detroit misfiring on offense… They extended to an 18-6 when the timeout came with 5 minutes left… Same lead when Black, Ingram, Clarkson came in for Young, Mozgov and Deng 30 seconds later… Lou in for Russell, Lakers up 12 still… Black, Deng, Ingram, Clarkson, Lou to start the second quarter… Lakers second unit D not holding the line and the Pistons starting to show some life… Young in for Ingram… Then Mozgov for Black, Lakers up 6… Randle and Russell in… The Pistons hit a 60-footer at the buzzer to take the lead at halftime… The Lakers trailed 59-57 at the half… Both teams trading hoops and passes out of bounds. Lakers with way too many turnovers… Score was 67-67 when the bench started coming in. Luke going small with Black, Young, Ingram, Clarkson, Lou… Zubac in for Black who rolled an ankle… The Lakers trailed 75-72 heading into the fourth… Zubac, Deng, Ingram, Clarkson, Lou… They took a lead but lost it midway through the quarter and Luke called a timeout… He sat Zubac for Randle… He sat JC for Russell with 2:46 left, long rest for Russell… The Laker offense struggled from behind the three line down the stretch… The Lakers shot 6-26 from three… “I think they are going to be a very tough team in the future, but I don’t know when we’re finally going to get over that hump,” Luke said…

Thanks DB. Don't know how you manage to watch these horrid games with such a critical eye.

Thank you. Very much appreciate your effort and positive point-of-view.
Bumpy is right.
Time to trade Lou, Nick and Moz (or Black) and cut Huertas. Play Zu.
Lakers need a younger and more athletic three.

If I'm "working" a game, it's a way different thing than just watching a game. Hard to explain, but you get pretty locked into the play calling, the reads, what players should/shouldn't be doing, etc.

If I was just watching a game, having a beer, my attention would surely fade in some of the crappy games for sure.

thanks DB. frustrating to lose such a winnable game, but that's how the season's gone after our modest start.

i really liked the separation Zubac was able to get his teammates on his screens - nothing spectacular but good screens have been hard to come by lately.

one thing i didn't particularly like was Randle's defense on Tobias Harris, especially on his 3pt shots - i thought he had way too many wide open looks (although he only hit 2-7 from distance). yea, i get that may have been part of the strategy (he's .343 this season and is a career .329 shooter), but it seemed more like bad defensive fundamentals than smart play.

5-20, in the last 25 games, in the words of Stu, that won't get it done.

The entire Laker frontline couldn't handle the Pistons quick/reactive/physical defense all night long. Randle couldn't create his usual looks.

I had to take my mom to the hospital at half-time (luckily she's fine). Once I saw with about 6 minutes, and even with 1.5 minutes to go, that the game was nearly tied, I knew we were losing.

Besides the one fluke Nick Young three, we just can't win close games.

Thanks DB. I thought the Lakers had this one at one point. Good to see Zubac getting some minutes.

Thanks DB

Our talented young players have the potential to be good to very good players. Hopefully they will embrace Luke's mantra to be consistently alert, aware and mindful of everything around them on the court

With all opposing teams fully aware that all they have to do to win is stay relatively close (even this is not a requirement) and just squeeze out young players in fourth quarters that will result in increased TOs, ISOs and countless other opportunities, the validity/usefulness of the stats up to the fourth quarters might be "Fool's Gold."

With all the young players saying the exact same thing for the past few games, it will be revealing which of them address their mistakes they talk repeatedly about.

Who will the future "Closer?"

Swaggy and LouWill are streaky shooters who are capable when they are hot. They can be shut down if they don't move the ball from side-to-side

DLO is too dependent on the home-run 3 PR glamour hero ball shot that is physically less grinding than penetrating the paint for shots where he is the most efficient. Big Game James' suggestion to watch what CO3 does might be helpful to being successful

When the uber talented Julius disappears and/or can't close at the rim while not playing good D (consistency), it highlights how much this talented player has to learn

JC is a physically gifted player where hopefully experience will help him eliminate careless, foolhardy and out-of-control plays while actually shutting down opposing players

We will see how BI fulfills his potential

We will see which player will take the responsibility of having the team play with the necessary energy and accountable to their assisgnments/roles

We will see which player will get into the other players' faces?

Which player HATES to lose with the others satisfied with putting in the proverbial "good effort"

I'm geting tired of these kind of quotes. All the right words, but no action.
Where are your deeds, Randle? You were supposed to be the aggressor....

Of course we do react too strongly. That's what fans do.
Then again, I'd be more happy if it was two of the trio bringing it every game and only one falling off. 1/3 is certainly not good enough. Even given the youth. 2/3 is a must!

And yet, what if Russell played more minutes tonight? Would he have carried the team to the victory?

I really disliked the over reliance on Lou in this game. When we go on Lou-ball mode all movement disappears and we get picked on on D.

I hope we shop him uber aggressively.

No, but he could have put up really big numbers. These numbers would have lifted his overall numbers, and would have made him feel better about himself. Also, it affects how others look at him.

DLO, at this age and point in his career, is very reliant on his confidence and rhythm. In fact, getting DLO's confidence up is more important for us in the long run then winning this game and certainly much more important than Lou putting up numbers.

The three young players most people have touted as important building blocs have been typically very inconsistent - like all young players. It is more revealing that none of these three players have been able to step up when the need arises and/or been trying to keep all the other players on the court accountable. Making mistakes is part of the process, for a very young team bring out worked by older teams

LouWill understands that he is the most effective in a motion offense. When the offense just dies (everybody stops moving), he forced into ISOs

Nance's absense has highlighted how much his maturity, basketball IQ and awareness is missed. TRob is definitely trying (how many layups at the cup can he miss!), supplying energy (resulting in PT) and getting boards (aka The Dirty Work). Undersized TBlack usually is hustling and bringing energy.

Is Deng still on the roster?

Unless the latter is needed to shop him.

Thanks DB! I was impressed with the team's defense in the 1st quarter and thought they could've had a bigger lead than the 14 point lead they enjoyed at one point because Morris hit some tough shots. Deng especially I thought looked good being disruptive in passing lanes (less about deflections/ steals and more about just stopping the pass attempt completely).

Unfortunately, that effort went away pretty quickly.

Russell needs to figure out what's going on with his 3 point stroke. He's down to 34% on the season (he was 39% a few games ago), and he's 4-33 in his last seven games. GT's talked about his legs and I wonder if it's about that. Something striking is he was shooting 49% on catch & shoot 3s before this nasty stretch. He's shooting 6.7% (!) (1/15) in this slump.

Not too concerned about turnovers, since 2 were offensive fouls and 1 was that end of the half Hail Mary. He's been good about it in January.

A bit of a disconcerting game since Ingram & Randle both struggled, and Russell really only had a so-so game.

I do agree with that. Thats the one truly logical thing I see in playing Lou heavy minutes. But, lets see if the Lakers truly do trade him or if they actually overvalue him this much.
