UGGGGHLY… The Lakers have been beat down by a lot of teams this year, but the Mavs certainly have had the their number.

The Lakers trailed 67-33 at the half, getting completely dismantled on both ends by the veteran Mavs squad. The Mavs have owned them this season, but adding Dirk into the mix (a perimeter shooting big that the Mavs got away with playing at the C spot) really had them confused on defense. No advantage on the glass like they should have had. Offensively, they were turnover prone again with 10 in the first half, manifesting itself into a 38-11 second quarter.

The result was the largest halftime lead for an opponent in Laker franchise history.

They would fall back by as many as 53.

The final tally … a 122-73 loss, the worst margin in Laker history, beating 2016’s mark against the Jazz by a single point. This is where the Lakers are right now in the franchise – rebuild mode. Regardless, even with Russell sidelined, there no excuses for this kind of game.

“That’s not who we are,” Luke said.

Randle -- -- With Russell out, a lot of ball handling and playmaking by Randle. He pushed the ball up court quite a bit and was also the trigger man on some passes off set plays. He had 4 of the Lakers 11 assists to lead the team. The Mavs picked on him some on D, at least putting him into positions where he’d be late to react. But in this game, that was pretty much every Laker defender. No resistance anywhere. I’d like to see more fight in him when the team is getting their butt kicked. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-4 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 4 assists, 3 turnovers, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 22:37. He was a -13. The Action: He hit Deng under the hoop for a score. He pushed out in transition, attacked to his right, hung and banked with his left. He up-faked, leaned in to try to get contact, didn’t but still hit the 15-footer. He was called for a travel that looked bogus. He was fouled on a turnaround on iso, he made one. He hit Deng curling off the down screen for a layup. He missed a drive left, then got a bogus whistle after the fact when his follow through hit a defender’s face (either that or the whistle was way late off maybe an elbow with his off arm). Second Half: He pushed it out, slowed down, attacked with no purpose and traveled. He attacked across the middle and hit the jumphook. He swiped a pass that was going to Nick behind him in transition and took it for the layup.

Ingram -- -- He got the start at the PG spot, but Luke quickly went to Calderon in the first quarter. That helped the Lakers come back and even things up…but that didn’t last long. Ingram had another of those 1 for X first halves (1-7), but added 2 turnovers with no assists to his -35 while out there. Yes, ugly. He never really got on track in any way. No positives in this one other than minutes are always good for the young guys. The -45…brutal number. “I thought he was a little out of it today,” Luke said. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-12 shooting (0-3 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 turnovers, 1 steal and 5 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -45. The Action: He missed a reverse off a great bullet feed from Randle. He airballed a three trying to beat the shotclock on iso. Turnover on the two-man game pass to Mozgov (hit him in the hands, but it was a little behind him). He attacked down the lane off the Mozgov screen and scored the layup over the help D. He attacked the pressure and was blocked on a drive left (trying to finish with his right). He missed a baseline jumper forced to beat the clock. He attacked in transition and was hit on the strip with no call, turnover (looked like ball, then all arm). He was stripped on another drive, turnover. He missed a pull-up at the FT line. Second Half: We cleared out a side, he attacked Deron baseline and powered in the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He missed a turnaround fade on iso next time down, not a good look. He stripped Dirk on help to force a turnover. He missed a corner three on iso. He missed a three on a kickout a few seconds later. He faked the handoff, attacked and drew FTs, he made one. He was blocked on a drive. He charged on a drive.

Deng -- -- Back in the mix, he had a 7-point first half on 3-4 shooting. Only another jumper in the second half. Actually thought he was playing decent defensively compared to everyone else. He had a couple block and some good rotations. Offensively, the shot looked very flat today. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-7 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 2 boards, 2 blocks and no fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He scored a layup getting a switch off a screen and taking the feed under the hoop to start the game. He missed a sideline three. He sank a three on a kickout. He curled off the screen, took the pass and scored a layup. He blocked a drive. Second Half: He sank a tough wing jumper working off the screen. He had a pass bounce off him as he cut to the hoop, uggh. He missed a wing three, short on the flat shot. He missed another very flat pull-up 18-footer, way short.

Mozgov -- -- He was defended by Dirk. We probably should have gone to that more right away. We tried in the second half, but this one was already over. Let’s get physical on this matchup in the post and on the glass early and make them pay. He had 3 offensive boards, but how is it only two other Lakers had a single offensive board each? The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-5 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He faced up on Dirk, attacked and missed (he wanted the foul on the hook shot). Early offense post up next time down and he drew FTs, he made both. He couldn’t handle a pass from Ingram on the roll. He took the pass from Calderon on the roll and kicked to Deng for a three. He missed a jumphook. Second Half: He missed a jumphook in the post against Dirk on the first possession. He sank a 17-footer off the inbounds pass on the baseline (I like that BLOB sequence, you could get that shot off with a second on the clock).

Young -- -- He led the Lakers with 9 points on 3-7 shooting in the first half. He missed a couple of shots in the second half and didn’t score again. No starters in double digits. Did this miss Russell with the starters? Sure, but there’s no excuses. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-9 shooting (1-5 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist and no fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -23. The Action: He missed a three off the DHO. He swished a pull-up jumper at the FT line. He swished a three on a catch and shoot coming to his right. He airballed an open wing three. He missed a wing three off the screen. He attacked the paint and ran over a man, but drew the block call for FTs, he made both. He swished a wing jumper going to his right. He missed an 18-footer after moving in on an up-fake. Second Half: He missed a pull-up at the top of the key. He missed a wing three.

Clarkson -- -- Wow, he looked awful on both ends in the first half. Mavs loved him on the court. He and Williams were a -22 and -28 respectively in just their 11 minutes of first half action. They just got beat down and had no counter punch. Clarkson had poor decisions offensively and was easily taken out on D whether by screens or just getting blown by. The jumper started to drop off some high screens in the second half when he kept it simple, but a garbage game altogether. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 5-13 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 3 boards, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 25 minutes. He was a -36. The Action: He missed a pull-up 15-footer. He swished an open 18-footer when Zubac knocked the defender down. He attacked the paint and scored the layup with ease over the help D. Indecisive on a drive and he traveled, unforced error. He missed a pull-up working off the high screen. Another turnover trying to force a drive that wasn’t there. He missed a baseline jumper on an inbounds pass. He bricked on a step-back on iso, not a good look. He stripped a bigger man trying to post him up on the other end. Not close on an open three. Second Half: He sank a pull-up off a high screen. He sank another pull-up off the screen. He let his man blow by him for FTs. Wild miss on the baseline (I think expecting a whistle that didn’t come). He missed a long pull-up. He swished a 20-footer. He clanked a corner three.

Williams -- -- One of the reasons the Lakers struggled in the first half was Lou’s 1-5 shooting with 2 points. He got tapped on threes and didn’t manufacture any points from the line. And if he’s not getting it done offensively, that usually means he’s going to be a negative factor on the court…but not usually the -28 like he was in that first half. The Mavs did a good job pushing him to his right at times, but he also just missed some shots. He looked a little more like himself in the second half, but when you’re down 40, who cares? The Stats: He scored 15 points in 4-11 shooting (1-6 from three, 6-6 from the line) to go with 1 assist, 1 turnover, 1 block and 1 foul in 20 minutes. He was a -29. The Action: He missed a three fading to his left off the high screen. He probed off a screen and was stripped for a turnover. He missed a one-hander getting forced to his right. He got tapped on a wing three. No box out and it allowed the Mavs to regain possession. He attacked to his right off the screen, kept going and scooped in the layup. He set up Nance off the two-man game. He missed a three. Second Half: He drew FTs on a bump on the perimeter, he made both. He attacked right and drew FTs. He missed a wing three to start the fourth. Quick attack in early offense for a layup. He airballed a three going to his left. He missed a drive right. He swished a rare three from the right corner, his only make behind the arc. He attacked the rim for FTs. He swished a baseline jumper.

Nance -- -- He got 5 minutes in the first half and certainly didn’t have any impact. He didn’t impose his energy or athleticism on the game, but even his usually reliable reads were a little rusty. So he was a -14 in those 5 minutes. He looked better in the second half, getting a nice block on a close out and hitting a jumper. Good to see him back out there. Hopefully, the minutes open up and we see that second unit dominance again. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-2 shooting to go with 1 offensive board, 1 turnover, 1 block and 2 fouls in 10 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He got lost after a scramble under the hoop and we gave up an open jumper. He hit a floater in the middle of the lane off the two-man game. Second Half: Soft touch on the jumper from the top of the key and it dripped in off a bounce. Nice rotation to draw a charge in the paint. Great close out to block a corner three.

Black -- -- This is the kind of game where you expect his defensive mobility and hustle on the offensive boards would pay off. He was non-existent out there in his 10 minutes. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting and had 2 fouls in 10 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He was blocked in the paint trying to hit a fade with his right I think instead of a lefty jumphook. Second Half: He back-rimmed a short one in the paint.

Zubac -- -- The +/- for some players in this game were painful. Zubac had the -15 in just 6:33 in the first half. He may have had the lone highlight in this game with another skyhook that swished. Maybe that or Nance’s block on a hustle to the corner. The Stats: He score 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 1 block and 1 foul in 18:33. He was a -29. The Action: Nice hustle to crash the glass and get an offensive board despite not being in great position. Nice read to break up a lob out of a timeout, helping Nance who had to switch. Second Half: He couldn’t handle an interior pass from Lou. He missed a floater off the two-man game (I’d like to see a dribble there, then strong finish). He forced a brick on a drive with a strong challenge. His interior pass was deflected. He swished a skyhook in the post. Turnover trying to hit Robinson on an interior pass.

Calderon -- -- In early for Ingram in the first quarter. We matched him up defensively with Curry, putting Nick on Deron. That seemed to right the ship a little as the Lakers pulled back even with the Mavs. The Lakers were still in the game at that point but at the end of the quarter, things started going south as soon as he sat. The guards behind him got killed. The Lakers shot just 3-21 from three, Calderon missed his two attempts. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists and no fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He was knocked over on an illegal screen to get a stop. He missed a three off a weakside split. Second Half: He missed a short leaner. He swished a pull-up from the left side. He missed a wing three.

Huertas -- -- He came in with 7 minutes left. I think this game went so sideways so fast that Luke probably didn’t even think to see if he could bring Huertas in to see if he could help jumpstart the offense in the first half. The Stats: He scored 1 point on 0-1 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 turnover and no fouls in 7:46. He was a -10. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Turnover on a pass, dunk the other way. He was fouled on a jumper. He missed an elbow runner.

Robinson -- -- He came in with about 5 minutes left. The forgotten man in a game where plenty of minutes were available. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 5:36. He was a -8. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He was called for a charge on a nice drive and spin move. He scored a layup on a drive.

Walton -- -- Ingram to start the game at PG. Down 13-6, he sat Ingram for Calderon. A 5-0 run by this group forced a Mavs timeout… Ingram, JC, Black in for Randle, Young and Deng… Down 2 when Zubac came in for Mozgov with 4 minutes left… Lou in for Calderon a few seconds later. This is when the game went south… The Lakers trailed 29-22 after the first quarter… Zubac, Nance, Ingram, Clarkson, Lou… A 7-0 run for the Mavs off Laker turnovers and Luke called a timeout 90 seconds in… That unit all out for the starters with Calderon instead of Ingram… Mozgov and Calderon out for Williams and Ingram, going small… Lakers call timeout down 24… Zubac in, then out for Nance… Probably their worst half of the year… The Lakers trailed 67-33. The Mavs lead bigger than the number of points the Lakers posted… He sat Deng for Calderon midway through the quarter… The Lakers trailed 90-55 heading into the fourth… More garbage time… “This one caught me by surprise,” Luke said…

Calderon: 18 minutes, -2.
So without him, in 30 minutes, they were -47.

That's unbelievable.

Wow. Spent the day on an in-house construction project. Didn't realize the game was early. I can clearly see what I did was a lot more fun than watching this game.

Thank you DB for enduring unwatchable Laker outings like this one and giving us such thorough and well-thought out recaps, thoughts and ratings. Here's hoping for some much better performances soon.

I spent the rest of the day before and after the game dealing with in-house and out of house water problems. The wind/rain combination is killing me. Leaks in some usual spots, leaks in a couple places we had a roofer fix and were fine up until now, and leaks in new places...

...And then there's some of my trees I lost on Friday.

My hope for a break today and it's the Lakers getting their asses kicked.

Thanks, looks like I copied Deng's number in there. Fixed it.

Mehhh..
This team is up and down, but more like downhill lately.
I understand that this is partly a youth thing - experienced teams seem to always have their number - but how on earth can they be so bad in defense? Who is the Lakers D coach? Time to man up.

DB - your dedication is definitely appreciated

Was Deng on the court and/or providing the veteran leadership that was expected? Acknowledging that he was offered much more money than the Heat, is there an injury and/or is he not a good fit for Luke's system? If he is usually not playing during crunch time, why is he there?

If the team is unable to recognize that the best way to punish the Mavs is to have Mosgov and/or any other Laker guarding him to take advantage of him on offense - where is the basketball IQ.

Sadly, nobody was embarrassed or mad at being blown out again. The excuse that is their youth that makes playing with no energy acceptable. The team seems to be looking forward to the All Star Break because they are tired. One would hope that these youngsters will use most of the time during the break to learn how to play defense

It will be revealing to see how these youngsters respond in the next game and in the games right after the break

Our youngsters are talented and Luke is trying to find the right roles for them while seeking to uncover who will the leader. CP3 has displayed that he is the strategic and most important key for Blake and DeAndre's success, Lakersbare looking for that type of Kirk Gibson-like force.

Ouch. I've had all 3 problems before, roof leaks, window/moisture seal failures, and downed trees, but not all on the same weekend!!! Then the Laker break turns into a contender for worst game of season. indeed.

Thanks again DB for your time and these T&R's, especially in these circumstances.
