Ok so this question came up and I wanted to know how would you guys answer it.

Pick any experience or school project and explain it to a 8-year old kid.

The answer to such a question is so inherently specific to the individual that any crowd sourcing for a response is likely to backfire.

Sounds like a question aimed at having you describe a scenario, in full detail ( details are key), and related to whatever position/field you are applying.

Details. Can't stress that enough. Paint a picture and guide the rater with step by step recount and explain the importance of each step and why they are crucial.

You can get some ideas from ELI5 at Reddit of the detail that is needed for your own situation.

This is just a first informal interview. Even the question itself is vague and not job related.

I'm applying for data analyst.

This is like an assignment in school.
What is your future employer looking for within your answer? What need are you fulfilling?
Now pick a personal experience that can be simply explained to show how and why you can fulfill that need.

I actually gave a first date a pretty good thought.

The purpose of this question is to validate whether you can take a complex idea or project, and break it down in to digestible chunks that a layman could understand.

What I would probably do to answer this question, is make up an experience or project, explain how it works in the simplest terms possible, and the next part is key, use an analogy that is relatable to an 8 yr old to explain it.

This is a fairly common question for anyone in a project management or analyst type role. What are you applying for?

Yup -- it's a communication question. For something similar, google Up Goer Five.

Most times questions like that are about the interviewer wanting to see how you can take something complex and explain it in plain language to people who are not as technically minded.

Exactly. Based on that great movie Ted, I would somehow involve the interviewers wife and a violation with a piece of produce.

I'd explain "what does a data analyst do" to an 8 yo kid.

On your journey through the job market you will run into all types of interviewers.

Some don't have a clue and just want to mess with you, I would have done my best to BS an answer, but I would have definite negative thoughts towards this company.

Another one, that these interviewing turds like to ask is: "If I was to talk to your ex-boss what would he say was your worst trait?"

I REFUSE to play this game with them and flat out say something like: "My boss thought I did an awesome job and hated to see me go"
