Return of the Tank?… Last year, the Jazz obliterated the Lakers whenever they matched up. That previous all-time worst loss in Laker history? As mentioned a couple games back, it was against them.

Without Randle and Russell, the Lakers took to the floor against the Jazz on the second night of the back-to-back.

Maybe the slower pace helped a little in that regard as they stuck with them 44-41 in the first half. They went dry, however, in the third quarter, going without a field goal for nearly 7 minutes and giving up a 16-0 run. A very bad stretch by the Laker bench (Ingram and Clarkson, especially).

That put the Jazz up by 10 heading into the fourth. Zubac and Clarkson cut the lead down to 4 twice in the quarter, but they could never close the gap further, falling 96-88.

The Lakers are No. 2 in the tank standings and they have string of road games coming up prior to the All Star break.

Black -- -- Might as well lead off with Tarik as he’s gone from Byron’s doghouse last year never seeing anytime to getting a start tonight. With Randle out, Black was moved into the starting lineup by default at PF, but some credit to him for playing hard this season. I like seeing the Black/Mozgov combo, but that duo is desperate for a playmaking guard. We’re starting Calderon, so forget that. Not a great game for him, however. He seemed quite aware of Gobert roaming around to affect some of his shots. He also didn’t kill it on the glass like he usually does (just one offensive board that did lead to a three). The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-6 shooting to go with 2 boards, 2 assist, 1 turnover, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 foul in 30:29. He was a -7. The Action: He dunked off a feed from Mozgov to start the game. He pulled down an offensive board and kicked out to Young for the three. Nice weakside screen to free up Nick and it led to a three. He blocked a Gobert layup. He hit Zubac on the interior feed for the short one. He erased the dribble penetration. He tried to cram over Gobert, but left the ground a little too soon and missed. Second Half: He missed a layup on the feed from Deng, but Mozgov cleaned it up. He hit a jumphook in the paint. He missed a jumphook, but Deng cleaned it up. Great job tying up Hayward on the perimeter for a jumpball, but we didn’t win that and the Jazz got a three. Sloppy screen tripping a man from behind to erase what was going to be a layup by Lou. He missed a jumphook.

Deng -- -- After a quiet first half, it looked like they tried to get him going a little to start the second half. While his defense is among our better players, he’s certainly MIA in the offense. A lot of that has to do with how well we run things. He’s the kind of guy that needs that kickout, extra pass or some very polished execution, which is not going to happen with this starting unit. I’d like to see him at the top of the arc more as we run floppy plays to shooters, where he’s the trigger man on the pass. Not sure why that doesn’t happen with more regularity. With this unit with Calderon, especially, the playmaking is limited. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-6 shooting to go with 4 boards, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He attacked the paint and missed a layup. Change of pace trailing the break and he scored a layup. He missed a three off the handoff. He slipped on the dribble, turnover, layup the other way. Second Half: He posted up to start the half and swished the turnaround. He attacked and hit Black, who missed a layup (but Mozgov tipped it in). He overpowered his man under the hoop for a putback. He was rejected on a drive.

Mozgov -- -- He was pushed down on a dunk attempt in the third quarter and that seemed to get him a little fired up. Some good energy on the floor after that. Having young Zubac stealing all the minutes behind him ought to, as well, so maybe that helped in the overall product from Mozgov in limited minutes, just a point and a board away from a double-double. Zubac looks like a walking double-double every night. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-9 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 1 steal, 1 block and 2 fouls in 16:34. He was a -3. The Action: Nice pass to Black in the paint for a dunk to start the game. Late read and he threw a pass away (that extra beat he often takes turned that one into a turnover). He attacked off the dribble and was promptly rejected (looked like a travel, too). He grabbed a rebound and missed an uncontested layup, wow. He missed a baseline turnaround. Diaw went around him like he was nailed to the floor. He swished the wing jumper off the inverse play. Second Half: He cleaned up a missed Black layup. He wrapped up Gobert who was about to dunk and kind of tossed him down. He rejected Gobert’s reverse. He was fouled on a dunk attempt in transition, getting knocked to the floor for a Flagrant-1, he made one FT. Way off on a jumphook. He attacked across the lane and banked in the runner. He spun on Gobert and dunked next time down. He missed a baseline jumper.

Young -- -- In the past two games, it’s been a question of who would score more, Nick Young or the other four starters combined? Mozgov picked it up a little, so the other starters had the advantage with a 19 points combined among the four to Nick’s 13. Nick knocked down a few threes, including one down the stretch in the fourth. Some tight D on Hayward trying to deny him the ball in crunch time. I appreciate the effort from him with that. Earlier in the game, he had a couple missed rotations that hurt. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-12 shooting (3-7 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 4 fouls in 29:25. He was a -9. The Action: He lost grip on the ball as he rose up, turnover. He missed a three out of a timeout. He hit a three on a kickout from Black. No boxout and he gave up a putback score. He sank an open three on the other end on a kickout by Nance. He missed an open corner three. He lost his man on a behind-the-back dribble, but choked the layup. He swished a jumper coming off his screen to the left. He forced and missed a two-for-one three attempt. Second Half: He sank a wing pull-up in early offense. He missed a wing three. He was blocked on a drive, but swiped it back in transition. He sank a wing three off the Zubac screen. He missed a three down 7 with a minute left.

Calderon -- -- Basically some filler minutes before Clarkson took over for the remainder of each half. Calderon was quiet but had the offense looking better in the second half. Really, though, little to no impact. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 12:29. He was a -6. The Action: He missed a layup on a probe. Short on a pull-up at the elbow. Wild pass by Calderon, easily picked off. Second Half: He found Mozgov in transition for FTs. He missed a pull-up off the high screen.

Clarkson -- -- He led the team with a +8 in the first half. Some good D and he didn’t force things. He should have had more than the 8 points in the half but got tapped on a couple of layups. He had a bad stretch in the third quarter with some turnovers and misses, but battled in the fourth. Loved the rock-back dribble midway in that quarter to get the defender off balance before taking it in for a layup and forcing a timeout. Some good moments in that quarter cutting the lead down to 4 twice off some of his playmaking and scoring. Because of the strong two-way game, Luke gave him the team-high minutes. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 8-18 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 5 boards, 4 assists, 3 turnovers, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 35:31. He was a -1. The Action: He missed a short one in the paint off a couple big steps (Black got the miss). Easy wing jumper when his man was wiped out by a screen. He attacked to his right and missed the drive (should have gone glass). He got tapped on a layup that crawled out. He missed a wing three. Nice help D rotation to challenge a layup and force a miss. He attacked a crowd and threw it away. He missed a layup in early offense after a herky-jerky perimeter move to lose his man. He missed a pull-up jumper short. He hit Zubac rolling for the floater. Nice controlled floater in the middle of the paint. He swished a pull-up on the final possession of the half. He had 8 points on 3-9 shooting and 3 assists in the first half. Second Half: He split a double but missed the floater. A little off on the two-man pass, dunk the other way. Iso chuck and he missed. He threw a pass out of bounds. He missed a corner three. He swished a turnaround on iso. Great footwork on a drive right for a layup. He attacked baseline and hit Zu for the short bank. Another herky-jerky drive getting the D off balance on a rock-back dribble and he scored a layup. He sank a pull-up off the Zubac screen. Tough pumping chuck from the wing against the shotclock and he missed, he swiped it back off the backcourt outlet to score a layup and cut it to 4 with a couple minutes left.

Williams -- -- He scored his 20 points on just 6-9 shooting. Some super efficiency there to lead the team in scoring. Pretty good efforts in the last two games to keep the team in contention. However, they’ve fallen short in both. If you are among those looking now at the tank standings versus the playoff standings, then he’s doing just good enough of a job in that regard. The 1 assist stat is probably just a little deceptive as he also looked for Zubac multiple times and a couple of those possession led to FTs for Zu. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 6-9 shooting (1-3 from three, 7-7 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He was called for a travel on a step-through in transition. He drew a double on the perimeter and hit the rolling Zubac for a score. He drew FTs in transition, he made both. He drew a perimeter reach and FTs, he made both. He drew the perimeter reach on a three (had to argue his way into those FTs), he made all three. He nailed his man to the floor in early offense on an inside-out dribble and scored the uncontested layup. Second Half: He missed a three off the double drag screen in transition. He setup Zubac for FTs on a drive and dish. He blew past his man and scored the layup over the help D. He setup Zu for more FTs on the two-man sequence. Change of pace to freeze the D and he scored a layup. He sank the pull-up at the FT line working off the Zubac screen. He crossed over and went high over Gobert off glass on the layup. He missed a floater in early offense. He swished a tough fading corner three going to his left. He missed a corner three from the other side.

Ingram -- -- Ingram was an 0-3 in the first half, continuing his scoreless quarter streak. He followed that up with another 0-3 in the second half. "Just can't get into offensive rhythm," Ingram said. So a pretty ugly stretch here by Ingram. He’s back to shooting a lot of off-balance stuff from the perimeter. Gobert rejected him twice tonight on his drives. Honestly, I hate to bring this in here but if this was D’Angelo last year some Laker fans would have had the pitchforks out. Ingram, hopefully, gets the pass the D’Lo deserved, as well, as a 19-year-old. There are better days ahead as his game and body matures. Not worried about him at all. Just put in the work. He said he's trying to get after it on D and worry about that when the shot isn't falling. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-6 shooting (-2 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 steal and 1 foul in 20:28. He was a -6. The Action: He attacked to his left and was blocked by Gobert. Way off on a short baseline jumper after a pumpfake. Good challenge to force his man into an airball on the other end. He iso’d and missed the wing pull-up jumper. Second Half: He was swatted badly on a step-through. He was backdoored to give up a dunk on the other end. He missed a wing three. He missed a three on a kickout.

Nance -- -- He did have some foul trouble that cut his first half a little short, but the minutes are opening up for him. Somewhat quiet night from him. He hit a jumper and had a nice cut off the Zubac post for a layup as his only scores. Nothing spectacular in this one, but a steady, quiet game. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-4 shooting to go with 7 boards (4 offensive), 3 assists, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 22:38. He was a -4. The Action: He sank an open baseline jumper without hesitation. He hit Swaggy weakside for the three. He took the pass on the screen-roll and bounced it to Zubac under the hoop for the layup. He cut off the Zubac post, took the pass and scored the layup. He picked up his third foul on a push-off, kind of weak. Second Half: He gave up a baseline drive for a layup. He missed a reverse on a putback attempt.

Zubac -- -- A career high 16 tonight. “Whatever I do after a game doesn’t feel right when I lose,” he said. He was tied for the scoring lead on the Lakers at the half with 8 points on 4-5 shooting. He opens the game up with his screen setting and is a big target in the open spaces on the floor. Throw in his soft touch from all over the court and you can see the potential on that end. He and Clarkson seem to have a little chemistry going. He outplayed Ingram in the summer league and now that he’s getting the minutes this season, he’s doing that as well. Love seeing his game translate to the next level. The big minutes from Luke two games in a row reflects that. We should be doing this the rest of the way as our youngsters need the experience. Defensively, I think he was a little cognizant of not giving much space to Gobert as other players attacked. That resulted in not as many alterations of shots that we’ve seen. I think these two guys are going to have some battles in the future. Gobert’s a beast defensively, though. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-11 shooting (4-4 from the line) to go with 10 boards (2 offensive), 1 assist and 1 foul in 26 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He took the pass on the roll, up-faked to lose the recovering D and scored the layup. Excellent duck in behind his man on the weakside and Nance found him for the reverse after a strong-side two-man sequence. He took the post feed and hit a cutting Nance for a layup. Working the two-man game, he went glass on a floater in the lane (I actually think that’s an easier shot). He didn’t seem ready for a pass from Lou but it was a little low and hot, turnover for Lou. He hit the jumphook off the interior feed from Black. Second Half: He airballed a baseline jumper up against the shotclock. Back-to-back stops against bigs trying to score on him, before giving up a bump and a score. He hit a couple FTs after Lou set him up on a drive. He missed a floater in the lane. He was fouled on a dunk attempt off the two-man game, he made both. He banked in a short one on a drive and dish from Clarkson. He missed a hook across the lane against the shotclock. He slammed down a missed Nance layup. He was rejected by Gobert at the buzzer on a finish at the rim.

Walton -- -- Bow ties for all the coaches on both teams in honor of the Basketball Coaches Association executive director. Coach Murmuys looked like Pee-wee Herman with the red bow tie… Black in the starting lineup for Randle, but with Calderon running things this only means the offense is going to struggle further to create… They trailed 10-2 when the timeout came from Luke after 4 minutes… Clarkson and Nance in for Mozgov and Calderon, Lakers down 8. So Black, Nance, Deng, Young and Clarkson. Reasonable defensive unit… The Lakers cut it to 3 to force a timeout… He brought in Zubac for Black, Williams for Young and Ingram for Deng down 6 late in the quarter… The Lakers trailed 23-16 after the first… They won the first 5 minutes to take a 2-point lead… Nance out with his third foul for Black… Young and Deng in for Ingram and Lou, Lakers down 6… Zubac out for Mozgov with 4 minutes left, Lakers down 6… The Lakers trailed 44-41 at the half… The Lakers took an early lead… Both teams were trading hoops, but a Flagrant foul on Mozgov’s dunk attempt seemed to get him a little fired up… He brought in Ingram, Clarkson and Nance for Mozgov, Calderon and Deng… That unit quickly gave up the lead and Luke called a timeout, bringing in Lou and Zubac, down 7… Lakers 0-10 in this stretch. A 16-0 run by the Jazz… The Lakers had just 1 FG in the last 7 minutes… The Lakers trailed 70-60 heading into the fourth… Black in for Nance… Young in for Ingram… Lakers trim it to 4 a couple of times but can’t get closer… Gobert a beast…

First... not as fun on a loss though.
Good game for Zu again.

1st?
Fun to watch Zu, for sure. He really does have a soft touch, but I really like The couple times he attacked. Your write ups are most appreciated.

Thanks, DB!

I don't quite understand why Luke prefers Claderon to Huertas. It's not as if Claderon was a defensive stud, while Huertas sure is a master passer. It should not all and always be about shooting.

Huertas should start some games, just to see how he does. Calderon can't get an assist.

We have to get our highest paid player and brought in for his veteran leadership involved?
Saying that he is one of our best defenders on a bottom feeder team on defense is not saying much especially since Luke has not asked him to shutdown top players.
Is Deng being a good role model for Ingram?

Ingram has not done the media gaffes that DLO committed last year that has given him the benefit of the doubt. He is learning the differences between playing the boys in college and playing with men in the NBA.

As much as I'm enjoying the Zu-Lou show with Swaggy P mixed in, the rest of the guys seem lifeless. Ingram's hit the rookie wall, having played major minutes. I guess someone has to floor Mos to get him revved up.

Which player on the Lakers have the DAWG in them?

Until they find that player, we have a ship with a talented crew but no captain
