Those Turnovers… This game was a flashback to how the Lakers played early in the season – a messy, turnover-prone start to fall behind only to battle back later and make a game of it.

The Lakers tied their season high with 15 turnovers in the first half with 9 of those coming in the second quarter where the Wizards did their damage. Very sloppy ball by the Lakers, but some of those turnovers probably should have been fouls. (The Lakers didn’t get their first freethrows until 2:45 left in the first half.)

“The second quarter was terrible,” Luke said, but mentioned he was proud of the way they battled in the second half.

The Lakers trailed by 14 at the half. They came out with better intensity in the third quarter, trimming the lead down only to see it lost again as Luke went through his rotations and the hybrid lineups got chewed up.

Down 11 heading into the fourth, the second unit locked down with some excellent D by Ingram, Nance and Young. They tied it up after 3 minutes.

A turnover sealed the deal for the Lakers down the stretch. With the Lakers looking to cut the lead to 1 or tie it up, Tarik Black had the ball stripped from him on the perimeter with over a minute left. A score at the other end and the Lakers were down 5. That was the ball game, the Lakers fell 116-108.

Russell -- -- Another game where he really controlled the offense and found teammates in positions to score on his way to double digit assists. He’s thinking the game great right now even with the 7 turnovers. In fact, those turnovers are a bit misleading. A couple of those were fouls that didn’t get called in the first half and another was one that hit Mozgov in the hands and he fumbled away. But the others were some sloppy dribbling and passes picked off. “There’s a couple times where he’s over dribbling a little bit,” Luke said, which has been an issue. But Luke said he loved how aggressive he was playing on both ends. Again, good balance from Russell in that regard. He left some points at the FT line he should have had. Despite Wall’s huge 33-point, 11 assist game Luke had no issues. “I thought he did a great job on John Wall tonight,” Luke said. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 5-15 shooting (4-10 from three, 3-6 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 11 assists, 7 turnovers, 2 steals, 1 block and 3 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He swished a wing jumper on the catch and shoot to start the game. He threaded the needle to Black for a dunk. He lost the handle trying to create on the break, turnover. He missed a three in early offense. He found Deng open for the three. Turnover on a pocket pass that was deflected. Bad first step in transition D and he gave up a layup. He swished a pull-up three out of a timeout after that. He missed a tough catch and shoot three, not getting squared up. Quick outlet to Clarkson for the dunk. He attacked and his pass was swiped for a dunk the other way. Fouled with no call and he coughed it up. The D left him so he sank a wide open wing three. He whipped a pass to Black on the screen-roll for a layup. He missed an awkward floater, got it back and was fouled, he bricked both FTs. He missed a three in transition. He threw a sideline pass away. He had 8 points, 6 boards and 4 assists. Second Half: He blocked a jumper from behind. He attacked, spun to change directions and was fouled on the layup attempt, he made one FT. He hit Young for the corner three. He sank a wing three off the screen. He had a drive poked away from behind. He swished another three on a switch next time down. He drew FTs on a perimeter foul and made both. He missed the baseline jumper off the two-man game. Way short on a pull-up three. He was blocked from behind on the break (should have finished with his other hand). Extra pass to Deng for the corner three. He got tapped on a floater after getting contact from behind to seal his man. Way off on a big three going to his right. He missed a wing three at the end of the game.

Black -- -- Some good chemistry with Russel in this game, either rolling or sealing the smaller man on the screen-roll to take the pass and score. Like what I saw from those two. Show me more. Black made the most of his start tonight with the double-double. He did have a huge turnover with over a minute left in the game that killed the team. He had the ball knocked away on the perimeter when we could have cut it to 1 on that possession, but instead trailed by 5. That was the turnover that broke the back. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-6 shooting (3-5 from the line) to go with 11 boards, 1 assist, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He dunked off the sweet pass from Russell. He scored a layup off the screen-roll with Russell. Great D on a guard switch to force a miss after several attempts to work on him in iso. Second Half: Nice pressure D on the perimeter to force a turnover. He biffed a dunk attempt when Russell found him on the mismatch. His offensive board led to a score by Deng. He took the post feed, faked middle, spun back the other way and powered in the And-1 layup, he missed the FT. Low position and he was fouled on the power up, he made both. He threw a pass away on the short roll. He scored a layup on a dropstep in the post. Reverse jam off the drive and dish from Lou. He was stripped on the perimeter, huge turnover with just over a minute left. He was fouled on a dunk attempt with a minute left, he made one FT.

Deng -- -- Really nice game from Deng. He was hitting threes early, then attacking the rim with speed. A really nice throwdown on one drive from the wing. I love seeing him attack when he gets that stright line to the hoop. He goes quick and hard. If it’s anything that forced him to get creative with the ball, it’s usually not good. But when he can get that straight line attack, he’s excellent on the finish. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-11 shooting (3-7 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards (3 offensive), 1 turnover, 1 block and 1 foul in 32 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He swished a three off the kickout from Russell. He sank a wing three, shot looking smooth. He missed a heat check three in transition. He missed a wing three on iso. He attacked in transition and earned FTs, he made both. He had 8 points in the first half. Second Half: He missed a very flat three. We got it back to him and he attacked hard for a layup. He missed a drive but scored the putback follow. Strong attack in transition and he threw down over the closing D. He missed a corner three. He attacked and charged. He sank a corner three on the swing pass.

Mozgov -- -- Some turnovers/fouls on the offensive end (bad screen, travel, off-arm on a finish) on just sloppy execution. Throw in another turnover on Russell’s stats on a pass that hit him in the hands that he fumbled away. Sometimes those hands of his can be pretty frustrating. We were better off with more mobile defenders in this one, so both Zubac and Mozgov’s minutes were limited. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 3 turnovers, 2 blocks and 3 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: Illegal screen, turnover. He gave up an offensive board and it led to a three. He swatted a 360 layup attempt. He iso’d in the post and traveled. He used an off arm while trying to finish on a scramble, turnover. Second Half: He missed a baseline floater. He fumbled a pass away on the pick and roll, uggh, those hands.

Young -- -- Some tough breaks in the fourth quarter for Nick on D. I thought he had both a block and reach to force a turnover that instead went as a foul and a Wizard possession. He also had a near steal that the Wizards recovered and sank a three on. Those go our way and the outcome of this game might be different. Offensively, he struggled from three. He better not shoot like this in the three-point contest. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-10 shooting (1-8 from three) to go with 1 board and 3 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He missed a wing three. He poked a ball loose to get a stop. He missed a wing three in transition. He rattled in a pull-up jumper at the FT line. He missed a corner three. He got backdoored for a dunk. He missed a three. He missed a wing three in transition. Second Half: He swished a wing jumper in transition. He hit the corner three coming off the screen. Bogus foul call on a blocked jumper on iso, Nick was irate, that was great D. Great reach to force what should have been another turnover, but the Wizards again had the call go their way. He missed a three in transition. He missed an open wing three.

Clarkson -- -- Efficient game from Clarkson and it was also efficient in terms of the amount of time with the ball in his hands. A lot of quick strikes off screens and catch and shoots. Not as much of the pound the dribble or ball stopping to try to create (although, he hit a sweet three off one iso sequence). His floater is really coming along. He hit one of his longer ones I’ve seen all season to start his scoring. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 9-13 shooting (2-6 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist and 1 foul in 29 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He hit a tough 13-foot floater. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He sank a three on a kickout from Nance. He dunked when Russell hit him on the leak out. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He sank a pull-up wing jumper. He sank a pull-up 18-footer off a screen. He scooped a lefty layup around the D in transition. He stepped back on iso and swished the three to start the fourth quarter. He missed a good look at a wing three. He missed an open corner three. Great close out to force a hesitation and pass by a shooter that allowed the team to catch up defensively and challenge the jumper. He attacked to his right and had his layup goaltended. He scored a layup with the Wizards protecting the three line.

Williams -- -- Lou was in the thick of the Laker fourth quarter comeback run. He drew five FTs, hit a three and attacked the paint for scores. We ran Nance at the C spot, so that set up some two-man sequences for those two. Their highlight, however, was when they changed ends with speed off the steal and Lou lobbed to Nance for the one-handed jam. That second unit is at its best when they can turn steals into quick counterstrikes. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 4-12 shooting (2-8 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 3 turnovers, 1 block and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He took a step to his left and hit the three to beat the shotclock. He didn’t hit rim on a heave at the buzzer. Trapped on the sideline again on the next possession and he turned it over. He rejected a screen and missed the three. He threw a pass away. He missed a floater. He was called for an offensive foul on a drive, using his off hand. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He missed a layup in transition but Zu cleaned it up. He missed a three in transition. He missed a three at the end of the quarter after a hesitation. He drew FTs on a reach on a three, he made all three. He pushed out a loose ball and lobbed to Nance for the one-hand jam. He drew contact on the perimeter and FTs in early offense, he made both. He slipped a layup under the D on a drive right. He hit Nance on the pick and pop for a jumper. He sank a deep three straight away out of a timeout. He missed a wing three. He swished a floater off a curl. He attacked the paint and fed Black for the dunk. Way off on a corner three.

Ingram -- -- Flashes of that defensive skillset in the second half with a couple of blocks (could have sworn he had three in the game). The first was a great job on iso D staying with his man and getting a piece of the fade with that length. The second one was impressive from a team D standpoint, he helped zone off the lane from the weakside to prevent a drive, then closed out on the offensive player to eat up the shot. That had the bench on their feet. When you Nance and Ingram are swarming teams with their length and speed, the potential is amazing. Looking forward to seeing them grow. Offensively, Ingram mostly tried to attack the paint. I like seeing that aggressiveness. Keep it up. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 1-3 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 3 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: All kinds of contact on the drive with no call and he airballed. He blocked a shot in transition. He attacked right, hung and scored a layup through a couple defenders. He was fouled badly on a wing jumper, he made both FTs. Second Half: Late on the tag on the D on weakside and he gave up an And-1 score. He attacked the paint hard and drew FTs, he made one. Superb D on iso to block a fading jumper in the lane and force a shotclock violation. He couldn’t finish a hanging layup attempt over contact. Great D on a help D rotation to deny the lane, then close out and block the jumper.

Nance -- -- Some great minutes from Nance while the Lakers were making their second half run. He finally brought that defensive energy and disruption that he was playing with before going down with the injury. He had 3 steals and a lob throwdown on the break. That’s the Nance we want to see. He also knocked down a jumper in this one. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-8 shooting to go with 6 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 1 turnover, 3 steals and 2 fouls in 19:37. He was a -1. The Action: He skied for an offensive board and it led to a three on his kickout. He muscled his way around the contact, stretched out and scored the layup. He missed a layup on a drive right. He missed a 16-footer. He swiped a pass but then coughed it back up in transition a few seconds later. He hit a short one-hander on the baseline. Second Half: He poked the ball away from behind, then Lou lobbed to him in transition for the one-handed throwdown. He forced an airball with some good D in the post out of a timeout. He knocked down an open jumper off the pick and pop.

Zubac -- -- “I thought Zu just looked slow tonight,” Luke said, deciding to cut his minutes short. I also thought the refs were letting the Wizard bigs get away with some overly physical play on him. They were muscling while he was in the post and even during shot attempts. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-4 shooting to go with 3 boards, 1 turnover, 1 block and no fouls in 11 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He threw the ball away in the post getting bumped off balance. He airballed a turnaround. He shed the contact in the paint and hit the jumphook. He rejected his man on a reverse attempt. He missed a floater in the lane. Second Half: Gortat got away with pushing off on him for a layup on a pass for a score. He follow slammed back in a missed drive by Lou in transition.

Randle -- -- Brief stint off the bench in the second quarter and, unfortunately, that wasn’t a good stint for the Lakers as they were a -12 in his 5 minutes. Luke said Randle still needs to get well and get his legs and a practice or two in. He got his only points on a putback on his own miss. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 5:35. He was a -12. The Action: Illegal screen, turnover. He couldn’t power up and finish in the paint on a layup. He attacked, missed but got the putback to drop. He missed a bad fade in the lane. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Walton -- -- Quick pace to start the game… Clarkson in for Young, Lakers down 4… Nance in for Black down 5… Zubac in for Mozgov, Lakers down 2… Ingram in for Deng, Lakers down 4… Lou in for Russell, score tied… The Lakers trailed 31-29 after the first quarter… Randle in with 10 minutes left in the second quarter for Zubac at the C… The Lakers trailed by 9 when Young returned for Ingram with 7 minutes left… Deng in for Clarkson… All starters in down 12 midway through the quarter (with Randle instead of Black)… Black in for Randle down 16 (that was a -12 for Randle)… Mozgov out for Ingram down 16 after picking up another offensive foul… The Lakers trailed 58-44 at the half. The Wizards had 17 points off those 15 turnovers… Strong effort from the Lakers to start the third quarter and they cut the lead by 7… He brought in Clarkson for Young, Lakers down 9… Ingram and Zubac in for Mozgov and Black down 12… Luke called a timeout down 14 and finished bringing in the rest of the second unit… The Lakers trailed 90-79 heading into the fourth… Nance, Ingram, Young, Clarkson, Lou lineup to start the fourth… They cut it to 4 off some intense D (Ingram, Nance and Young)… They tied it up after 3 minutes… Russell and Deng in for Ingram and Clarkson down 6. Timeout midway through the quarter, Lakers trailing by 8… Black and Clarkson in for Young and Nance… They trimmed it back down to 3 with a couple minutes left… Ingram in for Lou to try to get a key stop, but the Lakers didn’t. Timeout down 6… Lakers done for good…

I was at the game and the problem with them are turnovers and a lot of times they don't box out. Also, Russell was doing a lot of communicating with his teammates after bad plays and letting them know where he wanted them on the floor. So personally his leadership was taking some shape yesterday. I doubted his leadership ability but it looks like he is trying to leave a good impression on his teammates while he is in the game.
