Quote: | Report: As expected, Anderson Varejao signs deal with Golden State
This was expected, but it’s still a boost for the best team in the NBA. As if they needed it.
Big man Anderson Varejao cleared waivers and as a free agent signed a veteran minimum contract with the Golden State Warriors, something first reported by Shams Charania of The Vertical at Yahoo Sports, and since confirmed by other sources.
At the trade deadline, Cleveland traded fan-favorite Anderson Varejao to Portland in a three-team deal that freed up space for the Cavs to sign Channing Frye. Portland got Varejao and instantly bought him out and waived him. Varejao found a place he is happy to be — and a team that will have minutes for his with both Andrew Bogut and Festus Ezeli injured. (Those minutes likely dry up during the playoffs.)
This could create an awkward and interesting reunion in June if the Cavaliers and Warriors meet again in the Finals.
The Warriors will have to release a player to create an open roster spot; it is likely James Michael McAdoo or Ian Clark. |

I'm not sure that Varejao has much left in the tank, but I suspect that he will be able to adapt to the W's system better than Jason Thompson, who looked pretty clueless all season and saw very limited action. I'm sure the W's don't want to play Green at center much. That would be a recipe for being worn down for the playoffs. |

At least he is good for six fouls. I think he is signed to get the insides of lebron.
Seriously, he is still servicable for defensive n rebounding purpose for limited minutes. _________________ Kobe's Top 5 Dunks, 81 points, MJ last gm @Staples |

That would be the NBA's All Time Irony.
Bad move for the CAVS... _________________ -----------------------------------------------------

He hustles; that is for sure. He also is smart. He probably can play more like Bogut does as a ball handler at the top of the key. He has no lift, and I'm not sure he has the feet to help that much on D anymore. We shall see. But Speights isn't good as a back up C for every match up. |

He is looking good so far playing 10 minutes a game for GS. A good hustle guy who does all the dirty work. For some reason he doesn't annoy as much now than when he was with Cleveland |

The Cavs could give him a ring if they want (heck, the Cavs could give you or me or the owner's dog a ring if they wanted -- there are no rules about who can be given a ring.)
But he wouldnn't be considered a member of a championship team if the Cavs win. |

Maybe not but he was still part of the team during that season players still get rings no matter who it is. |

Warriors reach deal to bring Anderson Varejao back
Anderson Varejao‘s game took a step back last season — both when he played for Cleveland and with the Warriors. At the heart of the problem was the 33-year-old center’s shooting — a season before he had a very good 58 percent true shooting percentage that fell to a well below average 47.3 percent on the year. When Andrew Bogut went down in the Finals, Warriors coach Steve Kerr tried to lean more on Varejao, but he wasn’t able to fill those shoes.
Still, the Warriors are bringing him back, reports Marc Stein of ESPN.

The Warriors are nearing agreement on re-signing Brazilian big man Anderson Varejao to a one-year contract, according to league sources.

Varejao’s agency has since confirmed that the deal is signed.
The contract is likely for the league minimum.
With Bogut gone, Zaza Pachulia will be the primary traditional center for the Warriors — who will play small a lot more with Kevin Durant at the four and Draymond Green at the five — so there will be limited backup center minutes. Which is good, because Varejao may be the second best backup center they have and he is no longer a replacement level player. |

Not necessarily. There is no requirement for teams to give a ring to anyone; it's simply a tradition most teams follow.
Some teams give rings to players who were traded or cut during the season, some don't.
Whether he gets a ring is completely up to the discretion of Dan Gilbert.
A newspaper poll of Cleveland fans split 50-50 on whether Gilbert should give him a ring. V was non-committal about whether he would accept a ring from the Cavs, but he was asked that while the series was still going on.
Interesting situation. Should the Cavs offer a ring to a member of the losing team and would he even want it? |

He will eat up some minutes, so that ZaZa and Green don't play too many. Solid move. He may get that ring after actually playing in the playoffs for the winning team. |

Quote: | Warriors waiving Anderson Varejao, signing Briante Weber
Anderson Varejao generated discussion because he played for both the Cavaliers and Warriors — who met in the 2016 NBA Finals — last season. Even though he lost with Golden State, Cleveland still offered him a championship ring.
But that storyline distracted from another reality: The 34-year-old Varejao is no longer a useful NBA player.
The Warriors have apparently figured that out, and they’ll swap Varejao for Briante Weber.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports:

Sources on @TheVertical: Golden State is waiving Anderson Varejao, clearing way to sign D-League guard Briante Weber to a 10-day contract

With Zaza Pachulia and David West both sidelined by injury, Golden State is entrusting JaVale McGee (gulp) and Kevon Looney to handle center duties. But Shaun Livingston is also banged up, and Weber provides depth behind Stephen Curry.
Weber played for the Grizzlies and Heat last year. He’s not a refined playmaker, but he makes up for that with feisty defense.
Know who will be watching this move closely? LeBron James. Not only did they drop LeBron’s friend in Varejao, the Warriors — the team LeBron knows is the biggest threat to him winning another title — added a solid point guard as the Cavaliers bide their time despite LeBron’s repeated demands to add another point guard. When Cleveland eventually signs a point guard, there will be pressure on him to outperform Weber — and that’s not such an easy bar too clear. |

I was surprised to hear he got waived. I saw it this morning on a tweet from David Aldridge and I was a little shocked. _________________ #IStillBelieveTaurean |

He could go down as one of the unluckiest players in history. He suffers all those years in Cleveland and the year they finally win they drop him. If GS wins it this year, same thing. |

The Warriors said the same thing when they dumped Mark Jackson for Steve Kerr. |
