Blevins back to the Mets, also. This after Boone Logan signed yesterday with the Indians. So the top two lefty specialists are off the market.

I'll give him a chance. Maybe he still has something left. Could be a good set up guy for Kenley. Local guy, too.

Ugh, one of my most least favorite players ever.

But, if Karl Malone could win me over, I'm sure anybody can.

Hope he produces!

I feel ya. I despised both Malone and Payton. But, once they put on the uniform, they have my support.

I suppose this is worth pointing out...

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that while the Dodgers appear the likely destination for Sergio Romo, there is still a second team in the bidding.
Jon Morosi of MLB Network reported earlier on Friday evening that the two sides had agreed to a deal but that may have been premature. Heyman also notes that Romo is currently en route to the Caribbean Series so a resolution to this situation may not come immediately. Stay tuned.

Sweet. I wish I could pull a KBR and say I called it when I posted my interest in him a while back, but this did catch me by surprise seeing as he played for that other Bay Area team. One year, show me deal on a decent righty who loves Dodger fans Link. That's all I wanted.

He's a setup man so as long as he doesn't go Brian Wilson on us, it'll be an upgrade from our bullpen last year.

Looks like a $3MM deal for Romo. And he took less money to sign with us. Great deal. Even if he breaks down, it's a relatively minor risk with a big-time upside. Even if he doesn't up his meager 85 MPH fastball velocity from last season, he's still really tough for right-handed batters to hit with that slider. If he's getting tough righties out in the 6th/7th or even 8th innings in big spots in the regular season and especially the playoffs, he's so worth that. Now imagine if he actually could get his fastball back to the 87-88 range, like it was in the 4 seasons prior to last season (his average fastball velocity was between 87.9 and 87.4 in all 4 of those seasons, per Fangraphs), and he would be tougher than he was last season.

I know he's pitching for Mexico in the Caribbean Series and he'll also be pitching for Mexico in the WBC, so I'll be looking to see what kind of velocity he has. But of the pitchers we've signed with possible upside/injury concerns, this is a really solid deal.

Feel like Romo = Blanton for the most part. Knowing Doc, he'll use Sergio whenever he feels appropriate, from the 6th up to the 8th. I'm okay with it, but I hope Doc sticks to his mix-and-match philosophy and does not just rote shove Romo into the 8th. The bully excelled last year because they were consistently placed in positions to excel, not just mechanically tossed in.

I have total faith Roberts isn't going to rob-sub the bully. He was masterful last year in managing them.

Meet the Dodgers’ Right-Handed Skyrocket

The Dodgers have, and have had for a few years, one of the very best farm systems around. That leads to them receiving a certain amount of coverage, so you couldn’t in good conscience consider the Dodgers’ system in any way underrated. Yet so much attention has been focused on the elites — Corey Seager, Joc Pederson, Julio Urias, Cody Bellinger, and so forth. The major story of the system is the top of the system. Which, in turn, can undersell the best of the others.

We spent time last year singing the praises of Jharel Cotton, who has since been traded away. Cotton kind of got lost in the mix. Similarly, we’ve spent time singing the praises of Jose De Leon, who has also since been traded away. The De Leon perception suffered from the nearby presence of Urias. Maybe the fact that those two have been traded means the Dodgers weren’t big fans after all. Maybe it doesn’t mean that. But they’re major-league pitchers, and if the Dodgers just demonstrated anything, it’s that you can need a lot of those in a summer.

Why, then, deplete the depth? Well, Cotton got another starting pitcher. De Leon got a starting second baseman. Those are good reasons. Brock Stewart is another good reason. Fairly quietly, Stewart surged forward in 2016, by pulling off two very fundamental tasks: throwing a bunch of strikes, and missing a bunch of bats.

Dodgers sign Franklin Gutierrez for $2.6MM.

Sounds to me like a possible starter vs. lefties, but we also have Ruf, Trayce, and SVS. With that guarantee though, Gutierrez is going to make the team. We might have Ruf, Trayce, and SVS battling for 1 roster spot. Trayce has options though, and my guess is that he will be sent to the minors.

He certainly fits the bill of this FO as a player with a checkered injury history. But he did put up an .884 OPS vs. lefties last season, with 12 of his 14 HR coming against lefties. They've certainly tried to address their weakness vs. left-handed pitching, I'll give them that. If he's healthy, Gutierrez is a fine bench piece.

Not a bad idea with Forsythe being the everyday second baseman. He'll be productive as a DH and pinch-hitter.

Franklin Gutierrez? Wasn't he a former Dodger top prospect? I remember he was rumored to be untouchable when they passed on dealing him for a big bat, then ended up trading him for another bat.

As for Utley, good for both sides. Utley can stay home, Dodgers bring back veteran leadership to continue the clubhouse culture that they want to establish.

So far the front office is having a decent offseason. Of course, the real test is still next offseason when the big free agent market opens.

Love it. Dude's a gamer and a great clubhouse guy. Seager said he was instrumental in his success. Glad he's back.

Yep. Love him. Plus he's always good to singlehandedly power a few games against the Mets.

Ryu Update: This video was posted yesterday of Ryu throwing during a bullpen session (dated Feb 1st). He threw a total of 53 pitches and topped out at 86 mph. The staff assisting are from a KBO affiliate team (LG Twins), who are currently training at Camelback.

Perfect. If Forsythe starts to stumble offensively because he's no longer in the AL East, we have a known backup who can step up. Helps to have that hometown discount!
