Hot And Cold… This team sure has run hot and cold since Luke made the lineup changes.

The Lakers scored a season-high 47 points in the first quarter of this one. Their most points in a quarter for three years.

The ball was moving. Guards were finding bigs. Bigs were making extra passes. The Lakers got into the flow and the Bucks couldn’t stay with them despite scoring at a decent clip themselves.

The Lakers shot 71% in the first half and had 20 assists.

“A big part of why we hit those shots is that we were getting rhythm shots. We were getting possessions with multiple passes and making the defense rotate from the inside out, which are the easiest type of shots to hit,” Luke said.

That ball movement stopped in the fourth quarter as the second unit stagnated the offense, resulting in late shotclock attempts. The game started to turn. The lead was trimmed all the way down to just a couple of possessions from evening things up.

But when you lead by as many as 27 points, that’s hard to come back from. The Lakers held on for the 122-114 win over the Bucks.

Russell -- -- He was far too passive in the last one (even passing up on shots when defenders went under the screen as mentioned). Of course, the ball also never found its way back to him in the last game, either. In this one, the ball was moving. That resulted in a number of catch-and-shoot opportunities for Russell, which plays to his strength. It shouldn’t be that hard to get him that many looks off the catch on a game-to-game basis. Good job by Nick and Russell looking for each other in this one instead that just being one way. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 4-9 shooting (4-8 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 5 assists, 2 turnovers, 1 steal and 1 foul in 27 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He hit Randle cutting for FTs. He drained a catch-and-shoot three. He drew a double and found Nick in the corner for three. He found Black cutting baseline for a dunk. He splashed a wing three off a kickout from Nick. He swished the corner catch-and-shoot three off the kickout from Black. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He swished a pull-up three straight away (much better looking body control on that one). He missed a pull-up three on iso. He had 12 points on 4-6 shooting. Second Half: He missed a wing three on a kickout. He missed a drive but Julius cleaned it up. He airballed a three up against the shotclock. He ballwatched and got backdoored for a layup with 2 minutes left. He was trapped in the corner on an inbounds in the final minute and somehow found Lou down the sideline with a bounce pass to prevent a turnover. He was intentionally fouled for FTs, he made both.

Randle -- -- Hit and miss with Julius tonight. On the good side, he scored in a variety of ways: jumpers, jumphooks, putbacks, drives, getting to the line. There’s a range of skill there. He needed to be careful not ballstopping in this one. He’s been better about making decisions quickly this year, but he had a few moments in this one where the ball just died in his hands. Some scores late, but also a couple poor attempts in the final minute. Defensively, he was late to react at times. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-12 shooting (0-1 from three, 3-6 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 2 assists, 3 turnovers, 1 steal and 5 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He faced up on Maker, attacked strong and threw down the And-1 dunk, he missed the FT. Nice cut off ball and Russiell found him for FTs, he made both. He attacked across the lane and hit a runner. He was called for a travel on a kickout, not sure about that one. The ball died in his hands and we ended up a with a shotclock violation that possession. He missed a baseline pull-up. He played hot potato with Black under the hoop and drew FTs, he missed both. Second Half: He missed a reverse in early offense (should have gone strong). He anticipated a pass and swiped it from his man. He then gave it back with a bad pass on the other end. He sank the short jumper off the interior feed from Black that started on a loop play. He missed a jumper off a spin in the lane. He dunked off the interior feed from Nance. He scored and And-1 putback battling on the glass with Nance, he made the FT. He airballed a three trying to beat the shotclock. He hit a hook across the lane (looked hit, too). He hit the side of the board on a turnaround. He was blocked in the post with 35 seconds left.

Ingram -- -- Very quiet game from Ingram. He’s not strong enough to defend Giannis yet and that showed. Good learning experience for him, but the Greek Freak went off for a career high tonight (wasn’t just BI defending him). Because he was on his heels defensively, I think that had him a bit staggered offensively. He wasn’t a factor on that end. His only score was on a drive from the wing for a layup. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a +15. The Action: He missed a fade trying to beat the shotclock. Quick strike to blow past a defender on the wing and score a layup. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He broke up a lob after we let the guard get middle on the two-man game and it led to a Laker layup the other way. Second Half: He yanked a ball away from a man under the hoop. He attacked and threw it away.

Black -- -- A lot of the extra passing in this game came from the Laker bigs: Nance, Zubac and Black did a great job of keeping the ball moving. That’s one thing with Moz out of the starting lineup is the ball moves a little faster from our C spot. Mozgov would have a whole second of reaction time longer anytime he surveyed the floor to move the ball. That sometimes allows the D to catch up and disrupt things. We went with other our bigs in the fourth at center. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-5 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 3 assists, 3 turnovers, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 1 foul in 19:35. He was a +12. The Action: He scored a layup off the feed from Nick on the Lakers first possession. He cut baseline to take a pass, up-faked to lose the help and then dunked. He fumbled a pass away but hustled back on D to block the layup. He missed a 15-footer off the two-man game. Nice extra feed out to Russell for the corner three. Offensive foul trying to establish post position. He battled for an offensive board, pulled it down and then (not-quite a windmill) he wound up and threw down a dunk, awesome. He threw an offensive board off a man to regain a possession. He picked up his dribble in the lane then threw it out of bounds. Nice pressure D on the ice sequence to force the Bucks into a turnover. Second Half: He drew FTs and made one. Extra pass to Randle for the short jumper in the lane.

Young -- --He made his first 8 shots of the game, that included a number of threes and fours. He got a 4-point play early on and then another one before the half. An 11-point, 4-assist first quarter with some excellent ball movement by Nick. When he’s hitting everything, but also moving the ball to find others…the team will likely have a big quarter. After the strong first half, he opened the second half with a series of makes that kept the Lakers rolling. He wouldn’t hit a shot again after those first eight, but a great game by Nick. He had a heated practice, some words exchanged with Robinson. The Stats: He scored 26 points on 8-11 shooting (5-8 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 1 turnover, 2 steals and 3 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: He curled to the ball, drew the D and hit Black for the layup. He sank a pull-up elbow jumper next time down. He got hit but still banked in the And-1 three, he made the FT. He hit Russell popping out for three. He swished a corner three. He scored a layup on the break after a hesitation move. He turned the corner, got into the lane and kicked to Russell for the three. He got undercut on a three and knocked down the And-1, he made the FT. He had 15 points on 5-5 shooting. Second Half: He sank a fade at the FT line to start the half. He swished a wing three with a man all over him next time down. He swished a sideline three on his next touch. He missed a good look at a corner three, his first miss of the game. He scooped up a loose ball and missed a three. He missed a sideline three. Nice pressure D to force a turnover on a switch. That then drew a tech, which he made. He was intentionally fouled with 18 seconds left, he made both FTs.

Clarkson -- -- “He was putting pressure downhill on the defense and hitting the bigs,” Luke said, mentioning that opened up the big-to-big passing sequences in the first half. “We were just making the right plays,” JC said. They stopped doing that in the second half. Jordan said they started playing conservative, but the team had just 5 assists in the second half after 20 in the first half. He sank three threes and had 4 assists. Any game where he can put that many assists as well as spacing the floor, that’s really where you want to see his game getting better. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-9 shooting (3-6 from three) to go with 4 assists, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 4 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He attacked the paint and fed Zubac for the And-1 layup. Great help D rotation with Nance and he swiped a pass. He drained a three off the two-man game with Zubac. He picked up the dribble under the hoop, pivoted a couple times and scored the short one. He missed a baseline jumper. He hit Nance on the two-man game for FTs. He hit Lou on the slow cut backdoor. He missed a three straight away. Second Half: He attacked and couldn’t finish off glass. Head and shoulder fake and he swished the sideline three up against the shotclock. He drained a deep three off the hand off. He missed a three trying to beat the clock. He missed a three just barely beating the shotclock.

Williams -- -- Well, some good moments in the first half, especially moving the ball to Zubac for scores. In the fourth when that ball stopped moving, he became turnover and prone and that led to some scores the other way. That wasn’t a good stretch and Luke kept that unit out there much too long. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 5-9 shooting (3-5 from three, 8-9 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 4 turnovers, 1 steal and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He found Zubac off the two-man game for the floater. He drew FTs on a perimeter reach, he made one. He was blocked on a drive. He sank a pull-up three on a two-for-one sequence. He scored a layup off the slow cut backdoor play. Great interior feed to Zubac for the layup. He missed a three straight away. He deflected a pass to help get a stop. He sank a corner three on a kickout. He dunked on the breakaway off the Nance steal. Second Half: He broke his man off on a crossover and hit the three. He drew three FTs on a perimeter reach next time down, he made all three. He was held on the perimeter for more FTs and hit them. Early offense attack and he was blocked. Iso chuck from three and he missed. He was stripped for a dunk the other way. Not close on a drive down the lane. He iso’d and threw a kickout away, And-1 the other way. He was nearly stripped, but got the whistle with 24 seconds left for FTs, he made both.

Nance -- -- Great job getting to the line and knocking them down. “We were sharing it, trusting each other. It was just beautiful basketball,” Nance said. He was in the thick of a lot of that ball movement. Whether it was Larry getting setup for FTs or him throwing a little interior lob to Zu for the score. Just some great work by the bigs in this one. And, of course, that starts with the guards making that first pass a lot of the time. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 1-3 shooting (9-10 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 28:25. He was a -4. The Action: He grabbed the loose ball and dunked. He was fouled on a layup attempt, he made both FTs. He was fouled trying to finish off the two-man game with Clarkson, he made both FTs. He drew FTs on the interior feed from Zubac, he made both. Nice interior lob to Zubac for the layup. He kicked out to Lou for the corner three. He swiped a pass and it led to a dunk by Lou. Second Half: Nice job nearly yanking the ball away from Giannis under the hoop to prevent a score. He hit Randle for the dunk off the interior feed on the short-roll. He crashed the glass and kept it alive a couple of times before Randle scored the And-1. He missed a scoop off the two-man game. He drew more FTs, up 6 with 1:45 and made one. He was intentionally fouled and made both FTs.

Deng -- -- So how does that conversation form Luke go with his GM? “Mitch, I want to bench your two free agents. No minutes for Mozgov and Deng will come off the bench.” It’s been up, down and up again doing that…but no one is really missing them from the starting lineup. Deng is one of the team’s better defenders and probably would be in your group of 5 if you need one stop. You certainly hope more than a donut offensively, but now he’s in that Ingram role with Clarkson and Lou dominating the ball. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 steal and no fouls in 25 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He missed a corner three. Second Half: He missed a three (or long two) against the clock. He swiped the ball from the post on help D.

Zubac -- -- He scored a flurry of points right after entering the game. Just a great touch and he has the ability to score in a variety of ways. As mentioned, the passing by the bigs was great. Zubac once again was quick at making the decisions on the catch on whether to move the ball or finish. The Nance/Zubac combo was strong. “I really like playing with Larry. We really understand each other,” Zubac said. They’re smart bigs. They know how to set screens and are willing to set them much more than slip them. Zubac is so good at finding space and getting open off those screens. He’s going to be tough to deal with as he matures. At some point, these two may work their way in the starting lineup. Maybe not this year, but next year? Asked about what areas he wants to improve on, he rattled off a list of things on the defensive end, starting with the two-man D. He knows his limitations and is focused on them. Great sign. Keep giving him the minutes, Luke. That’s the only way he’s going to be ready defensively for minutes with the starters down the line. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 7-11 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers, 1 block and 3 fouls in 20:34. He was a +0. The Action: He scored an And-1 layup off the drive and dish from Clarkson, he made the FT. He swished the baseline turnaround on iso. He hit a floater next time down. He scored a layup off the interior feed from Lou. Quick feed to Nance on the short roll to setup FTs. He scored a layup off the interior lob from Nance. He scored 11 points on 5-5 shooting. Second Half: He took the feed, went middle, then back the other way and hit the short jumphook. He missed the short hook across the lane (probably could have dunked that). He was hit on a dunk attempt with no call. He put back in a missed three with some nice touch. He rejected a layup out of bounds. He missed a lefty hook. He missed an 18-footer having to get the shot up quick against the shotclock.

Walton -- -- With Thon Maker in the starting lineup, the Bucks seemed to struggle out of the gates. The Lakers pulled out to a 17-7 lead, forcing a timeout. An 11-0 run with 5 assists on 6 FGs. The ball moving well… Nick scoring, but also finding teammates to help drive the Lakers scoring. The Lakers led 29-14 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… Line change as Luke went with all five bench players with the lead cut to 8 with 4 minutes left… They kept rolling… The Lakers led 47-30 after the first quarter… Lakers need to put the clamps on defensively, however… Lakers were up 64-47 when the timeout came midway through the quarter. Luke went to the complete line change again to bring back in all the starters. Obviously, he’s aware that the staggered subs somehow bothers this team because the second unit wasn’t playing bad. That wasn’t a send-a-message change. Just time to change… The Lakers led 76-55 at the half. The Lakers shot 71% and had 20 assists… Deng in for Ingram early. Then came back in a few seconds later after Luke had a word with him… Lakers up 21 when Zubac and Nance came in for Randle and Black midway through the quarter… Clarkson in for Russell a few seconds later… Lou and Deng in, Lakers up 21… The Lakers led 103-84 heading into the fourth… Quick timeout by Luke when the lead was trimmed to 17 after the offense began to stagnate… The lead was trimmed to 12. Luke staying with the bench too long here… He finally brought back in Russell, Ingram and Young with 7 minutes left up 9. Momentum shift, however… Luke called a timeout up 7 after the 14-0 run… He brought in some of the starters except he kept Nance for Black and Deng for Ingram, who was in just briefly… Lakers going into some weaves to get the ball moving again… They held on down the stretch… Last time the Lakers won in Milwaukee, Luke Walton was on the team as a player…

Thanks DB! Missed the 2nd half and I was getting pretty antsy in the car. Got frustrated at how much leash that 2nd unit got in the 4th. Happy to hear they pulled it out in the end.

Yeah, that was slow and painful before.

I probably should have mentioned it but we had one of those rare Russell/Nance sequences where they were on the court together for extended run. We need to see more of that like this summer. It was a blah game by Russell defensively, but our best defensive lineup on this team probably contains those two and we've hardly seen them.

We do; IMO, I'd like to see Russell, Nance, and Zu given an increase in playing time with each other...

Thanks DB! Fantastic first quarter.... wow.

And thinking about a DLO/Young/Ingram/Nance/Zubac lineup does get me excited about watching Laker basketball, more so than any other lineup. Defense, ball movement, intelligence and ability to score from anywhere.

Hey DB, thanks for the write up as I missed this game. Although from the boxscore I looked at, Ingram was a +15.

As Stu mentioned, the teams were playing like they were playing an ASG that is exactly what our team thrives on. When an opposing team is scoring at a 60% clip and down by 20+ points

Will JC or DLO be a Marcus Smart-type player on defense, they haven't shown any indication that they want to or have the ability to shutdown opposing players. With Swaggy taking the tough defensive assignment, Luke has displayed his opinion. They are like today's UCLA Bruins without a floor general like Ball or Fultz. It does provide additiona indications what JC and DLO are best suited for

Interesting that Nance was playing the 5 (alongside Randle) during crunch time - not Black or Zuboc.

When the guards are not passing the ball to Zuboc to make the defense collapse and move, they (guards) were just wasting time passing to each other on the perimeter with passes with no intention

These past Laker games have had many comical moments that often occur when two young teams with little basketball foundation but a lot of athletic skills play each other. Many times it was like Groundhog Day with the same mistakes being repeated again and again.

This game was another leason for the youngsters and scouting time for Magic (who just watched the UCLA vs Oregon game the night before at the LOUD Pauley Pavilion!)

Nance's maturity and basketball IQ displayed itself again

Greek Freak was strong and the Lakers had nobody that can defend him, though Nance tried

I still recall seeing a Draft projection that had the Lakers taking Thon Maker, sure glad Zubby dropped to us instead...!

Yep. I agree with the use of "would" instead of "could." We've seen Nance make that mid-range shot. He just needs to get over his reluctance to take it.
