Coming Up Short… Long ago, the Kings vs. Lakers games would have been must see TV. Even in preseason. They hated each other, got into fist fights and played some of the best basketball in the NBA.

Today? The buzz is gone, the talent is, too, and no one would blame you for missing this game and doing something else for Valentine’s Day.

It was a dull affair until the fourth quarter. After an 11-0 Kings in the third quarter, Lou Williams sparked the Lakers in the fourth with a series of passes and scores. A 13-0 run by the Lakers tied it up midway through the final quarter. From there it was back and forth down the stretch. Every Kings score was seemingly met by a big play by the Lakers on the other end. Williams had his hand in a lot of that with the huge 19-point fourth.

He couldn’t hit the last one, however. After a scramble for a missed FT, he pushed it up with a few seconds left (the team could have called a timeout). Lou had to attack to his right, unfortunately, and missed the tough three at the buzzer. Had he been going to his left on the other side of the court, that might have been trouble.

“If you get the guy that you want with the ball in his hands and you don’t allow the defense to set good things can happen,” Luke said.

In any event, the Lakers fell 97-96. The Lakers smaller defending Laker bigmen couldn’t handle Cousins down the stretch (he finished with 40 points, 12 boards and 8 assists).

Russell -- -- Turnover-prone first quarter (all on passes early, with Cousins especially reading Russell’s intentions). Another turnover on the dribble in the second quarter had him with 4 turnovers by the half and only 3 points without an assist. Defenders were able to go under the screens on Russell with no consequences in the first half. In the third quarter, he got more aggressive, putting it in shooting mode to start the quarter. Some better moments, but still sloppy with another turnover. He’d finish with only a single assist and 5 turnover. He just never seemed in sync, perhaps trying to pass the ball in the first half, then score in the second half. He didn’t get back in the game in the fourth with Lou going off and Clarkson playing reasonable. Again, Russell’s three ball looks so much better when he’s catching and shooting (both his makes were that way). The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-9 shooting (2-3 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 5 turnovers, 2 steals and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: Telegraphed perimeter pass to start the game and it was picked off. He swiped a pass on the give and go, but then coughed it up on a bounce pass to Randle in transition that went out of bounds. He missed a pull-up elbow jumper. He sank a catch-and-shoot corner three. He missed a pull-up baseline jumper. His pocket pass was picked off for a dunk the other way. He was called for a carry, turnover. He overpassed twice on one possession instead of shooting. He deflected a pass to get a stop. Second Half: He attacked and missed a runner, taking some contact. He swished a pull-up off a high screen next time down. He swished a tough catch and shoot three off an inbounds pass and up against the shotclock. He missed a wing pull-up. He kicked out to Nick for a three. He missed a pull-up three when his man went under the screen. He tried to force a backdoor pass and it was picked off. He missed a short one-hander in the paint.

Randle -- -- The only Laker with more than two made field goals in the first half (he had three). He sank a three on his first attempt of this one. That shot looked smooth and good when it left it his hands. Like Russell, he sat in the fourth and his minutes were limited as the second unit was battling. At least with Randle sitting, you still have young guys in the PF and C spots in this one in the fourth. So we were giving those guys some quality minutes. Randle self-critiqued his game, saying he could have played with more energy and more engaged. Glad that’s on his mind. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-11 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 7 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 27 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: No hesitation on a three on a kickout from Ingram and he swished. He attacked the paint and hit the running jumper. He missed a 17-footer short. He missed a runner. He missed a bank. He missed a jumphook in the lane. He attacked the empty space and hit the 12-footer. He pushed it up and hit Nick for three. He missed a jumphook. Second Half: He missed a wing jumper. He muscled in a layup over Cousins off a head fake. Interior feed to Black for a layup. He dunked off the Ingram drive and miss.

Ingram -- -- Most of his highlights were in the first half. He led the Lakers with 3 assists at the half. He also buried a three and had a putback dunk. His freethrow shooting was awful. He made just 1-4 and airballed one of those misses. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-7 shooting (1-2 from three, 1-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 4 assists and no fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He swished a corner three on a kickout from Nick. He attacked and kicked to Julius for a three. He crashed the glass and one-hand slammed back down a missed three (might be the first putback slam like that of his NBA career). He missed a three short. He fed Mozgov for the layup off the weave. He attacked, hung and missed. He missed a turnaround on iso. He ball-faked and missed an And-1 layup on a drive (could have held it for the last shot of the half), he missed both FTs (airballing the second). Second Half: He missed a layup after getting around his man in the post, Randle cleaned it up. He attacked the paint in transition and drew FTs, he made one this time. He missed an elbow jumper.

Black -- -- He got into foul trouble early and had to sit for Mozgov. (Mental mistake picking up his second foul on the offensive glass with a push…can’t do that when you need to save your fouls for the defensive end…later he would also get one on a charge.) When Cousins returned, Black picked up his third foul after a good stint with the second unit and was done for the half early. That chilled a Laker run that got them the lead. He’d have his hands full again in the second half. Black would eventually foul out with 1:31 left on iso D against Cousins. Tough cover for him. Wish he didn’t have the two offensive fouls in this one. Those were controllable. Offensively, he was credited with a three-pointer in this one when Cousins goaltended after Tarik had to throw it up to beat the shotclock. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-5 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 6 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He and Cousins traded fouls as Tarik defended the post early on. Tarik then picked up his second foul on the offensive boards and had to sit. He stripped his man on one end to get the stop, then follow-slammed down the missed layup by JC on the other end. He kept an offensive board alive with a tap out. He couldn’t hold a drive and dish from Deng to give it back. Second Half: He missed a one-hander on the baseline. He scored a layup off the interior feed from Randle. He missed a jumphook in the post. He was called for a charge trying to finish over a man on a straight line drive. He threw up a three to beat the shotclock and Cousins goaltended on it.

Young -- -- Painful missed FT rebound in crunch time as he was lined up across our other big at the PF spot. The Kings would score a hoop off that. The second chance points in a close game like this were killer. Some nice passes from Nick early on in this one. Any game with 4 assist from him is usually a good one, although he did have a couple of chucks in this one I wish he didn’t pull the trigger on. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-10 shooting (3-8 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 4 assists and 1 foul in 29:30. He was a +6. The Action: He kicked out to Ingram for a corner three. He missed a three straight away. He missed a step-back wing three (good hustle back on transition D to prevent a layup). He hit Russell in the corner for the open three. He swished a step-back wing three. He airballed a chuck from three. He swished a sideline three in transition. He missed a 20-footer. Second Half: He missed a three coming off the screen to take a pass. He missed a wing three. He sank a sideline three off a kickout. He attacked off the three line in transition and drew FTs, he made one. He forced and missed an elbow jumper off the dribble, not a good look.

Clarkson -- -- Clarkson doing some of the little things in this game. He led all Lakers with 6 boards in the first half. Love that. He had a big steal late in the fourth to take it the distance and cut the lead to 3. He was getting out on the break and changing ends with speed to get some easy scores. Some turnovers in the halfcourt where he looked like he pressed the issue too much. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-8 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 2 assists, 3 turnovers, 1 steal, 1 block and 3 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He set up Nance for the open FT jumper on the two-man game. He faced up on the inbounds pass and was fouled on the corner jumper with a couple seconds on the shotclock, he made one FT. He attacked the paint and lost control. He blocked a jumper from behind at the end of the quarter. Breakaway dunk off the Nance steal. He kicked a dribble out of bounds, turnover. He missed a jumper on an inbounds pass. He swished a floater working off the screen. He missed a layup in transition but Black cleaned it up. He lost a dribble out of bounds. Second Half: No ball movement, he attacked on iso and threw it away. He leaked out and Lou hit him for the breakaway layup. He missed a wing three. He jumped the passing lane on the perimeter to swipe a slow moving pass and take it the distance.

Williams -- -- Well, if he is being shopped, he certainly showed off his skills in this one with the huge 19-point fourth. He’s a killer off the bench. Asked about the trade rumors, he said, “Just go out and hoop. Let the powers that be deal with that,” he said. Lou wasn’t just scoring in this one. He led the Lakers with the 29 points, but he also led with 5 assists, as well. Some of that run in the fourth was him finding guys, too. The Stats: He scored 29 points on 10-18 shooting (4-11 from three, 5-5 form the line) to go with 1 board, 5 assists, 1 turnover, 2 steals, 1 block and no fouls in 24:27. He was a +10. The Action: He got tapped on a wing three on a kickout (a little flat). He missed a wing three off the screen. He took contact and missed the runner expecting a whistle. He missed a wing three in transition. He attacked baseline in early offense and reversed. Quick chuck after getting that perimeter reach foul and he drew three FTs, he made all three. Second Half: He sank a step-back three, just beating the shotclock. He scored a layup on the tap pass from Nance to ignite a break. He missed a wing three. He missed a corner three. He attacked in transition and scored a layup. He hit Nance for a layup. He found Clarkson leaking out for a layup. He hit a floater down the middle of the lane. He stole the ball from his man out of a timeout, pushed it out and fed Deng for the dunk. He drained a big three off the high screen. He turned the corner and hit a tough baseline runner. He threw a pass away trying to hit Nance. He crossed over a man and missed a three. He crossed over, drew the reach and chucked it up for FTs, he made both. He went behind his back to lose his man, then reversed around the help D. He drained a huge three coming off a handoff to his left for the tie. He tried to put the brakes on, but slipped as he stepped on the foot of the defender, his man slipped to the floor, as well, so Lou gathered himself and hit the 29-foot three to tie it up with 30 seconds left. He missed the tough three at the buzzer after pushing the ball up court in the final seconds.

Nance -- -- He had his hands full defensively, as well, against Cousins, who is just too big and strong for our smaller defenders. Good experience for him on that end of the floor, but he doesn’t have the strength to deal with Cousins. Offensively, he wasn’t hesitating and was efficient when he had the ball, showing some nice touch around the rim and he also hit a jumper. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-6 shooting (0-1 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists, 3 turnovers, 3 steals, 1 block and 4 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: No hesitation and he swished the FT jumper off the two-man game with Clarkson. He was blocked from behind on a layup. He knocked a ball loose, tracked it down and hit Clarkson for a dunk. No hesitation on a wing three and it wedged into the rim for a jumpball. Second Half: He tapped a loose ball ahead to Lou for a breakaway score. He hit a floater after taking a pass in the lane. He was held in transition for FTs, he missed both. He threw a pass away against a double team. He hit the floater off the two-man game with Lou. He blocked WCS’s drive and controlled it. He kept an offensive board alive, but threw it away shortly later. Clutch baseline floater with 1:15 left to tie it up.

Zubac -- -- Very little notes for Zubac in this one. He blamed the SwaggyP shoes he was wearing. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 4 boards, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 10 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He threw an outlet away. Second Half: His floater was blocked.

Deng -- -- Some good moments defensively, but really not much of an impact offensively. We did run him again for a while at the PF spot in crunch time to help spread the floor. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 3 boards, 2 turnovers, 1 steal and no fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He missed a flat wing pull-up jumper. He hit a pull-up at the FT line. He couldn’t finish a layup in transition. He missed a corner three. Second Half: His lob pass was picked off. He dunked trailing the break off the Lou steal. Nice D on iso to get a stop.

Mozgov -- -- In early when Tarik picked up two fouls and had to sit. Luke wanted to keep his rotations in place and we could use the big body against Cousins. He sat after that first half. We brought him in with 9 seconds left to get a defensive board at the end of the game. If you wanted to win this game, you probably bring him back in when Tarik fouled out, if not sooner, as Tarik was having problems defending Cousins. We could have used the big body out there, but it’s a good experience for the young guys. Luke also got burned with the lack of size when Nick couldn’t secure a defensive board off a missed FT a little earlier. (Mozgov nearly gave up the missed FT on this one with 9 seconds as he fell to the floor, but we recovered). The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-3 shooting to go with 3 boards and 2 fouls in 10:34. He was a -4. The Action: He missed a lefty hook across the lane. He nearly blew a layup he could have dunked off an Ingram feed. He sank a quick-fire baseline jumper. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Walton -- -- Black with a couple early fouls on both ends of the court and had to sit for Mozgov… Mozgov picked up a couple fouls himself shortly later… Down 19-18 with 4 minutes left, he called a timeout after we gave up a layup. Nance and Clarkson in for Young and Randle… The Lakers trailed 23-22 when the timeout came with 2 minutes left… Zubac, Deng and Lou in to round the rest of the bench subs out… The Lakers trailed 29-23 after the first quarter. Kings shot 63% that quarter… Black back in for Zubac, Lakers down 4 with 9 minutes left… The defense picked up, some great rotations and recoveries by this group… The Lakers went on a 13-2 run… They led by 1 when Ingram came in for Deng with 5 minutes left… Low scoring quarter… Russell and Randle in, Lakers up 1, but Black had to sit with his third foul for Mozgov… After winning the quarter, 18-14, the Lakers trailed 43-41 at the half… The Lakers burned a timeout unable to inbound the ball to start the half. Sigh… Nick out for Clarkson… Then Nance and Deng in for Randle and Ingram, Lakers down 7. Lakers scoreless for several possessions… Zubac in with a couple minutes left. Lou trimmed some of the lead down… The Lakers trailed 70-64 heading into the fourth… Zubac, Nance, Deng, Williams and Clarkson to start the fourth quarter. Cousins still in for the Kings… The Lakers were down by 11 when Cousins sat a minute later… Zubac out for Young, Lakers down 13 with under 10 to go… Lou making some things happen, scoring, finding teammates and the Lakers cut it to 7 to force a timeout… They tied it up behind some more Lou… The Kings brought Cousins back in and took a 4-point lead when the timeout from Luke came… He sat Nance for Black, Lakers down 5 with 5 to go… Ingram in for Deng, Nick sliding over to PF down 7… Lakers tied it up again off a Lou three, but Black fouled out with 1:31 left… Cousins picking on our smaller defenders down the stretch for FTs… Nick at the PF spot on the FT line couldn’t prevent an offensive board that led to a Cousins jumper and 3-point sequence… Mozgov in with a few seconds left to try to prevent that from happening again (he nearly didn’t)…

Really bad coaching game from Luke IMO. Substitutions were bad throughout, and not calling a timeout in the last few seconds of the game was killer. This isn't 2009 and you don't have Kobe, Luke!

Nice write up DB. didn't like the fact that DLO was not in at the end of the game. I agree with the above about the substitution patterns, there's no structure. got to get the starters used to finishing games, otherwise their just dummy starters. And the real starters are the bench.

Problem is not that the "starters" are finishing games, problem is that there is little difference in talent between the starters and the bench. In addition, the starters are very inconsistent - hence not closing games if they are having bad games.

Luke's substitution patterns are geared to finding out which combinations and/or individuals can play.

It is clear that DLO is a good "catch and shoot" player but not a floor general.

JC is at his best coming off the bench and maybe he will transform into a good defender

If LouWill is not on the team after the trade deadline, Lakers will not have a dependable closer.

The second half of the season will be interesting to watch

Gonna miss Lou if he's traded. Very smart and savvy player. At least he's getting a chance to show his skills on this team.

DLo and Randle not getting PT in 4th of a close game, but Ingram does? I don't think any of the 3 played well, but that's pretty telling IMO.

Clarkson was left wide open during that last shot.
