Bill Paxton has died ... TMZ has learned.

We're told the actor died suddenly Saturday due to complications from surgery.

Paxton had a string of hits, including "Twister," "Titanic" and "Aliens." He won an Emmy for "Hatfields and McCoys." He was on a CBS series, "Training Day" at the time of his death.

The 61-year-old actor had 2 children and was married to his second wife.

The family says, "It is with heavy hearts we share the news that Bill Paxton has passed away due to complications from surgery." The family accurately describes his "illustrious career spanning four decades as a beloved and prolific actor and flimmaker." The family adds, "Bill's passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable."

Very shocking and sad news, I just watched his new/current show Training Day yesterday and really enjoyed this show.

My favorite role of him was in True Lies, he was awesome it that!

People don't typically die during surgery, and I would expect some lawsuits to follow...

The best.

They showed it at the New Beverly about a year ago. The crowd was quiet during the opening credits but when Bill Paxton's name appeared they burst into applause. He's so funny and perfect in that movie.

Damn, so sad. I loved his work. I'm also a big fan if Frailty, a movie he directed. I'll always remember him as Hudson from Aliens "Its game over, man". RIP.

Yep. Aliens, Terminator (cameo in Commando, too), Predator 2, a lot of 80s stuff. Tombstone! (no pun). That sucks. I was literally watching one of those Bio fluff pieces on him the other day. He started off behind the scenes in the 70s, did location scouting and other stuff for the original Carrie.

He was one of those rare ones that if someone told you they hated him, you'd assume they were some kind of idiot.

I was surprised to find out he was the kid in the air in this picture taken after JFK was assassinated.

One of my favorites. No one could play the douchebag hero with a heart of gold better than Bill.

"Game over man! Game over!"

Damn, this one hits big. He was in all 3 of the Mount Rushmore of action franchises...Aliens/Terminator/Predator.
