And The Tank Rolls On… The Lakers are primed for their tank showdown with the Phoenix Suns in the next game after dropping their eighth straight tonight, falling to the Mavs 122-111. It really wasn’t that close.

Dirk needed 20 points to hit the 30,000 mark tonight. He got 18 in the first as the Lakers gave up 38 points in the quarter. He then sank a baseline jumper early in the second quarter to hit the mark. Sixth player in the NBA to ever reach that milestone.

Meanwhile, the Lakers gave up another 70-point first half. That locked in the loss for sure.

The Mavs don’t score 100 points a game. They had 103 after three quarters.

And so the tank rolls on…

It wasn’t a bad effort, but in this league it needs to be an intelligent effort, which is a big difference…and hard to come by from the young Lakers these days.

“I think our guys want to get there and I think they are learning how to get there. They’re just not there yet,” Luke said. “In college a certain type of defense is considered good defense, and in the NBA that same defense will get a lot of points scored on you.”

I can’t be too hard on the guys tonight. They are going to get kicked around for a while in this tank battle.

Russell -- -- Slow start on both ends for him. He got into trouble a few times defensively pressuring deep on the perimeter only to give up penetration. It seemed like he was trying to set a tone on that end, it just wasn’t a smart one at times. The team as a whole kind of played like that. Luke mentioned them not running three shooters off the line with the Mavs like you need to. Russell mentioned guys not used to rotating to certain places on the floor with the Mavs having Dirk at C. So again, intelligent effort on that end from the young guys in multiple facets on D. His effort did result in 4 steals, so he and the team were clearly trying. Offensively, Russell was missing early, but tallied some points later. He had some nice off-ball cuts late in the game for points at the rim. This is the advantage of having others who can playmake off the dribble. Good to see more of that from him in this game. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 8-17 shooting (2-6 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 4 assists, 4 steals and 2 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He missed a baseline pull-up. He missed an easy FT pull-up just inside the line when his man fell. He missed an open corner three. He curled into the lane off the dribble and scored the layup. He missed a wing jumper next time down. He sank a pull-up three working behind a screen at the right wing. He was blocked on a drive. He attacked, drew the D and fed Randle for the layup. He swiped a cross-court pass as he zoned weakside. He posted up and got completely tapped on an And-1 in the middle of the paint, he made both FTs. He swished a 20-footer off a great Randle screen. Not close on a wing three in transition. He had 9 points on 3-9 shooting and 3 assists. Second Half: He knocked a ball loose, hustled after it and saved it inbounds for the steal. He missed a floater in the lane. He stripped a ball off his man to force a turnover. He swiped the ball from Dirk under the hoop and scored the short jumper. He missed a tough three at the buzzer, just getting it off on a kickout. He poked a ball away from his man for a stop. He hit Ingram for the And-1 layup off that in transition. Good weakside cut and he drew FTs on the layup attempt, he made both. Another off-ball cut when Ingram was creating and he found Russell for the layup. He missed a tough, step-back three. He didn’t settle for a three on iso, attacked past his man for a layup with a quick first step baseline. He swished a wing three on a swing pass. He cut to the FT line, took the pass from Randle and swished the quick fade.

Randle -- -- Not a good game from the Lakers with plenty of mistakes and soft spots, but I think some of the guys were really trying to put in a good effort. The numbers in this one: 13 points, 18 boards, 10 assists and pretty good motor most of the night. He’s working on that in practice and it’s starting to carry over. The signs of improvement are starting to flicker to life. Keep bringing the effort. He nearly had the double-double in the first half with 10 points and 9 boards. He kept the well-rounded effort up in the second half and came away with a triple-double, just getting it in the final possessions of the game. That’s his third of the season. He’s a young dude to be pulling these off like he’s done this season. Very positive signs. “I just try to go out there and play the right way,” Randle said. He also had some good moments screen setting tonight. He’s been running into them with speed to catch the D off guard. He’s still not very sticky on those, however, but the intention seems to be there. Keep it up, Julius. Good job getting to the line tonight and finishing while there. Even though he grew up in the area, Julius was a Kobe fan, not a Dirk fan. “I absolutely hated Dirk growing up,” Randle said. He mentioned he grew older and wiser and learned to respect his game. Dirk came out flame throwing in this one. They let him get comfortable and he lit them up. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 3-8 shooting (7-8 from the line) to go with 18 boards (4 offensive), 3 turnovers, 1 steal and 4 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He airballed a turnaround in the post. He tipped in a missed shot. He was fouled on a strip attempt in the paint for FTs, he made both. He hit Clarkson for three. He attacked on a push out, missed, but Ingram tipped it in. He lost the handle on a face-up drive into the D. He drew FTs off an interior feed, he made both. He kicked out to Clarkson for a three at the buzzer. He scored a layup off the drive and dish from Russell. He fumbled away a pass under the hoop. Nice job sprinting into a screen to free up Russell for the jumper. Kickback to Young for a three in transition. He beasted for an offensive board and drew FTs with 9 seconds left, he made both. Second Half: He missed the And-1 layup off the two-man game with Russell, he made one. He hit Clarkson on the DHO for the three. He shed Dirk, grabbed the offensive board and dunked. He choked a layup off the two-man game. He missed a one-footed jumper in the paint. He hit Russell flashing to the FT line for the jumper.

Ingram -- -- Respectable game from BI. Nothing flashy, but he stayed aggressive. He hit a three, midrange, got to the rim for his points. He had the three turnovers, but I thought his passing was pretty good at times. Just the types of reads he was making in a few plays show that feel for the game that he has. We went small at times with him at the PF again. We’ll look better at that once he gets some more muscle. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 1-3 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 5 assists, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He missed a turnaround in the post. He swished a pull-up at the FT line. He posted up the smaller Curry, didn’t settle for a turnaround, attacked across the lane and scored the And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He crashed the glass and tipped in the missed Randle drive. Bad kickout instead of trying to finish a drive, turnover (use your length and finish). He hit Clarkson for three out of the horns set. He missed a pull-up at the FT line. Short on a sideline three. Second Half: He attacked in early offense and drew FTs, he made both. He attacked baseline and kicked to Nick for three. He missed the sideline three. He pushed it out and lost it running tight into a player on iso, rookie moment. Nice concentration on the And-1 finish on the break after getting held, he missed the FT. He threw an outlet away. He attacked and hit Russell cutting weakside for the layup. He swished a wing three behind a screen. Quick feed to Nwaba in transition for the dunk.

Black -- -- Well, the -26 in 13 minutes might be the tipping point for Luke. You may see a move to bring Zubac into the starting lineup if he gets over the bruise. Black has consistently been getting into foul trouble early and just not bringing the impact like he had been. While this probably wasn’t the game for that switch to happen with the Mavs running Dirk at C and Barnes at PF, you certainly want your big guys to bounce that duo around and take advantage of that lack of muscle in the paint. Lakers just got killed by it. The Stats: He scored 1 points on 0-3 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards (3 offensive), 2 turnovers, 1 block and 2 fouls in 13:29. He was a -26. The Action: He rejected guard penetration on a nice track down. He missed a jumphook in the post. He drew FTs on the offensive glass, he made one. Second Half: Not close on the one-hander in the lane. He threw a pass out of bounds. He was stripped in transition, turnover.

Young -- -- We started off getting him a look in the midrange, then it was mostly three’s the rest of the way, which he converted a few. I think these types of losing streaks and blowouts have impacted his defensive effort in the past. We’ll have to see how that holds up. It’s a contract year for him if he wants to opt out, so maybe that keeps the focus on that end more. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 4-10 shooting (3-8 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a -16. The Action: He worked off the screens and hit the fade inside the left elbow on our first possession. He blew past his man with a great hesitation move and was fouled for FTs, he made both. He missed an open corner three. He missed a three from the other corner. He missed a 10-foot pull-up. He swished a three off the Randle kickback. Second Half: He missed a three from the top of the arc. He swished the corner three on a kickout. He sank a sideline three. He missed a sideline three on a swing pass. He missed a three when both defenders sagged off, leaving him open.

Clarkson -- -- He scored 15 points on 6-9 shooting in the first half. Very strong perimeter shooting half. He was hitting from distance as well as getting to the rim for scores in this one. He was in on one of the more painful-to-watch plays tonight. At the end of a quarter, he looked to run clock down then called for a screen. They promptly blitzed him, he turned it over and they took it for a dunk the other way. That kind of summed things up for the state of the Lakers right now. Defensively, some of his angles and decisions end up getting him in trouble like they always have. Saw that tonight. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 9-16 shooting (4-8 from three) to go with 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He swished a wing pull-up jumper in early offense. He sank a wing three off a feed from Randle. He missed a quick-fire three from the right wing. He blew a layup on a straight-line drive right. He hit a sideline three on a kickout from Randle. He threw a kickout away. He iso’d, spun away from his man and scored a layup. He sank a 17-footer working off a screen at the top of the key. He missed a tough step-back three straight away, not a great look. He popped out behind a screen, took the pass and hit the three. Second Half: He iso’d and missed the tough baseline turnaround. He sank a sideline three off the DHO with Randle. He missed a wing three. Nice rotation to swipe a pass under the hoop. He called his own number at the end of the quarter, lost it on a double team off the screen for a dunk the other way, well done. He missed a three at the buzzer. He snaked through the D off the screen and scored the layup over the help. He weaved into the lane, got contact to shed his man and scored the layup. He bricked a three. He attacked and dumped it to Nance for the dunk.

Nance -- -- Good to see him effective with the minor wrist injury. Nance will put a lot of people on posters in his career. He had the unfortunate task as the man defending Dirk as he was going for his 30,000. That will be replayed again and again. “I’m not taking all the blame for that,” Nance said. Dirk torched our starters and was on fire. Nance mentioned how he and Robinson helped get after it defensively late in the game. That was one of the few times in this game where we made the Mavs look a little uncomfortable and off-balance. Both of those guys are very mobile, so the pressure D worked well. I could also see Nance getting moved into the starting lineup to go with Randle depending on what Luke wants to do, but he really needs to look more comfortable on those jumpers. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-7 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 4 boards, 1 steal, 1 block and 1 foul in 20:33. He was a +2. The Action: He swiped a ball under the hoop. He forced Dirk into an airball. Not close on a corner three. He missed a 20-footer, short. Second Half: He sank a 17-footer on a pitch out from Randle. He tipped in a short one off a miss short by Randle. He swatted Noel from behind under the rim. He stripped Barnes in the corner. He hit a floater in the lane when Clarkson hit him off a baseline out of bounds play. Soft dunk off the drive and dish from Clarkson.

Brewer -- -- Kind of a surprising 9 points in that he certainly didn’t have the ball in his hands very long in this game. He’s either attacking on the touch or shooting quickly. Defensively, he had another of the better plays of the night for the Lakers on that end with a nice rejection on help D behind another defender. Good two-way effort in limited time. The team needs more of that. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-7 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 steal, 1 block and 1 foul in 12:35. The Action: He missed a drive right but Black drew FTs on it. He rejected a layup from behind a defender and controlled it. He attacked off the three line, avoided a charge and scored the layup. Second Half: He missed a flip-in attempt in the paint. Quick attack in transition and he scored the layup through a couple defenders. He swished a pull-up 9-footer, attacking off the three line. Way short on a wing three. He swished a corner three on a kickout. Nice hustle back in transition to challenge a shot and get a stop.

Ennis -- -- He was effective at getting past his man and to the rim for scores tonight. He couldn’t connect from three. He and the guys had a good garbage time run putting the pressure on defensively. We need more of that in the first half. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-8 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 17 minutes. He was a +12. The Action: He couldn’t finish a reverse. He ball-faked to lose the D and scored the layup. Second Half: He attacked in early offense and scored a layup. He blew past his man, then blew the layup trying to finish with his right instead of left. He blew past his man baseline for a layup. He attacked left, got his man on his hip and scooped in the left layup. He hit Brewer for three. His kickout was picked off. He missed a step-back three as the shotclock expired. He missed a corner three.

Robinson -- -- “He really turned up the intensity for us,” Nance said. Good fourth quarter run. He had a couple of nice traps on inbounds plays in the backcourt that helped force turnovers. It would be nice if this team could develop some sort of pressure D identity. They really need something they can lean on defensively and just don’t have that. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting to go with 6 boards, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 8:28. He was a +8. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He helped force a turnover on inbounds trap out of a timeout. He attacked to his right, spun to his left and missed the layup. He tied up another guard on an inbounds trap out of a timeout and won the jumpball. He was rejected on a drive.

Nwaba -- -- He had a nice throwdown to end the game. Hopefully, he can do some of that while a game still has meaning. Offensively, that was his only points. He missed both attempts from the line. It almost looks like he shoots with his whole palm instead of his fingertips. I need to see him shooting more to get a good look at that. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-3 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 steal and 1 foul in 8 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He attacked his man and drew FTs at the rim, he missed both. Second Half: He was blocked on a dunk attempt. He missed a layup on a drive. He slammed in transition off the quick feed from Ingram.

Walton -- -- Dirk hot to start, Lakers not. They quickly trailed 18-8 with Dirk scoring 11 of those. Clarkson in for Black who picked up fouls after 4 minutes… The Lakers trailed 23-14 when the timeout came midway through the quarter… Nance in for Young down 8… The Lakers gave up 18 points to Dirk in the first quarter… The Lakers trailed 38-29 after the first quarter. Good enough offensively, but that D… Black, Nance, Brewer, Clarkson, Ennis to open the next quarter… Down 15, they went with Black, Randle, Ingram, Clarkson, Russell… They started to lose more ground… He brought in Nwaba for Clarkson down 21… The Lakers trailed 70-52 at the half. Just too open looks… He started Clarkson instead of Black to open the second half as the Mavs are smaller… Black in for Young… Nwaba in for Russell… They trailed 103-74 heading into the fourth… Robinson, Nance, Brewer, Clarkson and Ennis to start the quarter. Good effort by this unit getting after it… They cut it to 19 when Russell, Ingram and Randle came back in to go with Ennis and Robinson… Good effort down the stretch to make the score look more respectable, but it was garbage time… “I think teams feel like when they play us right now that we’re kind of a soft team and they can come in and get their offensive numbers against. It’s got to be us to change that,” Luke said…

Dallas is really our bogey side. We always make them look much better than they are.

Thanks, DB!

Thanks DB. I missed the game today. The stats looked good for our young core, but 122 points says it all.

Mozzy and Deng's DRPM scores must be skyrocketing up

Yes, only 18 more games to see our youngsters being satisfied with just giving a 'good" effort with little focus on learning what it takes to win.

Team desperately needs a "Kirk Gibson" type player to demand accountability

Luol Deng - Good locker room presence but not a leader

Timofy Mosgov - Good locker room presence but not a leader

Lou Williams - In his time with the Lakers, player who leads by action

Swaggy - SG who wasn't expected to be on this year's team and not a leader

Revealing to see how the youngsters react to their auditions for Magic - they assume they will be on the Lakers team

How many times teams have scored 70 points in the first half against the Lakers

Young and the Restless Players

DLO - a talented player that might be in the wrong role, as noted at http://sircharlesincharge.com/2017/03/08/los-angeles-lakers-russell-impact/

Randle - talented player with various holes in his game. One wonders when he will be playing good to great D - most of the time

JC - talented Lou Williams/Jamal Crawford-type player that hopefully will show a greater effectiveness on D since his offense is inconsistent

Nance - wondering what are the keys to have him play more consistent with his effectiveness

Zuboc - untapped talent that hopefully will reveal itself as it matures

Ingram - seems like the more disorganized the team plays, the less effective he is since his mindset is not playing ISO.

TRob - undersized PF that plays with energy and D - just like Nwaba.

Maybe Luke will have these players on the court at the same time
Ingram
Nance
Nwaba
TRob
Zuboc

At least these players will play D, not sure of how many point they will score but it will force Ingram to be aggressive

We are that close to the end of the season already?
Well, the sooner this misery ends, the better.

Thanks, DB!

Consecutive tanks nowadays. We have caught up the Suns. Why can't the Nets win some games when they have nothing to gain in losing?

Since Luke is not playing the vets anyway, I wonder whether they could bring in another young player to test. I have Jordan McRae in mind. You might call him mini Lou. MWP could start his coaching career now.

Lately, I've constantly been saying to myself: "It's looking a lot like last year." Of course, I've been saying that alot over the recent lottery years.

It’s got to be us to change that,” Luke said…
Consecutive tanks nowadays.

Need is to find either a floor general or someone that loves to play D!!
