Going Backwards… I know we’re deep in the tank. I know we’ve got room to experiment and play the young guys extended minutes because of that. Tonight felt like it was just a bridge too far for the young Lakers.

The Laker lineup changes continued tonight as they moved Russell to the bench in place of Clarkson. So three new starters in 24 hours. Meanwhile, TNT experimented with DFish, Shaq and Barry doing the game. Both were horribly choppy with little flow or entertainment value.

For the Lakers, the change made valuable development time turn into straight-up garbage-time ball for an entire game. The offense fell back into more iso than we’ve seen all year. I think you’d have to go back to last year to see that much isolation. And not to blame any individual player, rather it was that the chemistry was thrown so off by busted plays, poor execution and guys being completely lost, that the team just looked severely broke. That confusion turned it into guys attempting to try to create on iso and score.

The move seems to have either come from either above to evaluate talent or from Luke to do the same. Whoever made the decision didn’t do any favors to most of the young squad. Ivica Zubac loved the post touches and minutes, responding with a career high 25 points and 11 boards.

“We should be ashamed and next game we have to go as hard as we can to correct this game,” Zubac said. He couldn’t feel good about his game. “Doesn’t mean anything…I’d rather score 5 points and help the team win than score 25.”

They were at least competitive lately despite the losses. It was at least somewhat entertaining and we could watch the young guys get comfortable with more minutes. Tonight, the brain trust turned this game inside-out and backwards on national TV.

Luke didn’t like how they competed (and, yes, they struggled badly). He said it was a blown opportunity for the young guys and for the Clarkson change up.

“This was a game we didn’t get better and we can’t afford not to get better,” Luke said of the 129-101 blowout. Pretty much my point but for somewhat different reasons.

Clarkson -- -- First off, I’m not sure you are doing Clarkson any favors by starting him after his great game last time when we’ve just shuffled things up. Let him try to repeat that effort last night within the comfort zone of his previous role. He was in a groove with the guys he was playing with. Let him get reps playing that way once again. Build a habit. Now you have a bit of a reset with other things to think about. I would have rather let him build on that last game within his existing role, then make the move like this. Of course, he should probably be starting right now, but along with Russell. He and Russell had a -22 and a -27 respectively in their new roles tonight in the first half. The team was just lost. In the second half, Clarkson found some offense by calling his own number. We resorted to a ton of iso ball in the second half. “Unfortunately, we didn’t really get to see what we were trying to look for with JC in the starting lineup because of the lack of competing that happened tonight never really allowed us to fully be engaged in a game outside the first 6-8 minutes out there,” Luke said. Really not sure what he expected. They were lost and confused. Hopefully, they can get on track with more reps, but it was hard to watch tonight. Good third quarter when JC had a little run. No Laker had more than 3 assists tonight as the ball wasn’t moving. Again, tough position for JC. Hope we can work together better to get more of a complete game from Clarkson as PG and from his teammates. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 7-18 shooting (3-7 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 33 minutes. He was a -21. The Action: He attacked the paint, hung and drew contact for FTs, he made one. He threw a pass away getting caught in the air (probably should have tried to finish that one). He was hit on a three, got a nice bounce and the And-1 fell, he made the FT for the 4-point play. He missed a long step-back jumper. He sank a pull-up on the baseline. He crossed over and didn’t hit rim on a drive. He blew a layup on a nice drive left. He threw a pass away. He pushed out the break, cut off the trailing defender and scored the layup. He attacked and ran into a player, lost the ball then fouled. He attacked the paint and threw the pass to the corner where there was no Laker within 25 feet, turnover. Way short on a wing three. He missed a layup on a drive. He had 9 points on 3-8 shooting and 3 assists with 3 turnovers in 19:33. Second Half: He missed a long two. He missed a three, short. Out of a timeout, he sank a tough iso wing jumper, can’t imagine that’s what we drew up. He swished a three off the drag screen in early offense. He sank an early offense three next time down, feeling it. Awful help D to give up a dunk. Short on a three on nearly offense. He missed an open three. He missed a two-for-one layup, but Nance cleaned up the dribble penetration. He took the sideline inbounds, attacked to his right and scored a layup.

Randle -- -- The defense was a little frustrating at time. I’m not sure why he’s sagging off a good shooting bigman to give him clear looks. Tired? Maybe. But it seemed more poor decisions and focus. Definitely one of the guys who didn’t bring it tonight. He kind of fell back to the Randle we don’t want to see, no extra efforts, no hard screens, no pushing out the tempo. He did sink a three. He was a -19 in his 11 minutes in the first half. Some of those lineups were pretty wonky, but he didn’t impose himself on either end. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-8 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 8 boards, 2 assists, 2 turnovers, 1 block and 2 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -20. The Action: He muscled up between a couple defenders in the post and scored. He iso’d next time down and coughed up the ball. He sank a wing three up against the shotclock. He somehow bricked a 3-foot jumphook, didn’t hit rim. Poor two-man D and he gave up a dunk. Nice block in transition from behind. He missed a three. Second Half: Lost on D, he gave up a jumper to a shooting big. Poor close out and he fouled. Again sagged off and gave up an open freethrow jumper, sheesh. He airballed a floater instead of taking a jumper. He moved his feet on a spin before putting the ball down in the post, turnover. He was blocked on a fade, indecisive on the dribble. He scored a putback on the break.

Ingram -- -- He had 3 fouls in 5 first half minutes, limiting his time. Rare we see that. “I wanted to be out there…but I didn’t do a good job starting the game on the defensive end,” Ingram said. He got after it in the third quarter, sinking a number of wing jumper when the offense turned into sort of an iso fest. Good to see him handle that iso well. I’m not sure he’s had that many opportunities in a single game. The game looks easy when he can hit that jumper. That’s part of the future Ingram. “Just feeling confident, taking what the defense gives me,” he said. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 7-12 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He attacked some awful D and threw down. He didn’t hit rim on a pull-up attempt from 17 feet in transition, uggh. Second Half: He spotted Nwaba on a backcut for a dunk. He missed a pull-up wing jumper, short. Nice challenge on a closeout. He sank a pull-up jumper straight away. The offense busted so he hit a pull-up jumper. He backed his man out, attacked, took contact to bump a man off and score the layup. He swished a pretty step-back wing jumper on iso. He missed a turnaround in the post. He traveled on the perimeter. He hit the floor for a loose ball. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He posted up, drop-stepped and scored the layup. He got tapped on a three off a swing pass. Nice high rebound against a big. He attacked and hit Zubac with an interior feed for a jumphook. The offense died, he iso’d and hit the wing jumper.

Zubac -- “Zubac was really good tonight,” Luke said, deflecting away some of the bad taste from this one. Ivica was one of the few players to look reasonably comfortable in the disastrous first half, able to score 8 points on 4-6 shooting. He carried that through into the second half for his career-high scoring game as he got extended minutes and we were giving him the ball. Some good finds by the guards for scores. But he also got to work on the glass and he got probably more post touches than any game all season. We were dumping the ball in there for him and he was efficient as hell with the 12-15 shooting. Only weakness was the poor FT shooting (his shot is looking flat to me right now). His tough around the rim was plenty soft and he also hit a nice bank from the left side that I’d like to see more of. That looked money. Got to love the numbers from the teenage second-round pick. Defensively, we were much too eager to switch at times which would leave him with smaller players on the perimeter. But he also sagged off a little too much on his big, which was par for the course in this one. In any event, we can’t switch so readily with him. It pulls him out of the paint and he’s not mobile enough to deal with guards despite his best effort. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 12-15 shooting (1-4 from the line) to go with 11 boards (4 offensive), 1 assist, 1 turnover, 1 block and 1 foul in 30 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He scored the Lakers first points while TNT was at the other game. He choked a layup he should have dunked. He hit the floater off the two-man game (up high on that one, tough to block). Flat jumphook for a miss. He blocked his man on the other end. He sank a lefty jumphook on the left block. He dunked off the drive and dish from Metta. Second Half: He tipped in a missed shot from behind a man. He was stripped in the paint. He scooped up a loose ball and scored in the paint. He tipped in a missed floater by Russell. Nice footwork in the post to move into a good look at a jumphook for the score. He scored a layup when Russell found him. Nice looking bank off the two-man game with Ennis. He banked in a hook at the front of the rim. He hit a jumphook off an interior feed from Ingram, tough make. He was fouled on a hook across the middle of the lane, he made one FT. Short on a jumper off an inbounds. He was intentionally fouled, he missed both FTs.

Nwaba -- -- If you want to make things a little easier for your young PGs, having Nick back in the offense to space the floor and provide them a pressure release would help a lot. I don’t envy Clarkson and Russell with Nwaba out there instead of Young. He had his only score off a backcut when Ingram found him. No real impact from Nwaba tonight. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 turnover, 1 steal, 1 block and 2 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He was blocked at the rim on a finish. He was picked on the perimeter out of a timeout. Second Half: He dunked off the backcut when Ingram spotted him. He gave up an And-1 to Galinari in the post.

Russell -- -- The move to the second unit is a bit puzzling when he needs minutes and they haven’t exactly given him starter minutes this season. He’s had some great games since the All Star break but last night was a dud. You could assume a lot of things with this move, some not great: 1. They want to reward JC for a breakthrough game. It was one of the best games of the year from our PG spot; 2. Russell had something off court like poor practicing or staying out too late, etc. and they wanted to send a message; 3. Showcasing JC; 4. Want to picture how the team would function with JC at the 1 and maybe moving Russell for someone else if you draft a PG. It certainly doesn’t help trade value if that’s the case; 5. The Tank. Not sure we needed any help in that; 6. We certainly weren’t beating anyone with Russell in the starting lineup and Luke is just being the mad scientist. Somehow he can’t seemingly start all his best players, which would be both Dlo and JC.; 7. It came from above to go along with the “vision.” Finally… 8. Luke wants to see if Clarkson can move the ball if given the responsibility to floor general instead of be the microwave off the bench. And if he can be a part of the future or if the last game was a one-game thing. For what it’s worth, Luke seemed to mention this was about the offseason and praised Russell’s play of late. So, perhaps, you take that as one of the two guards might be moved if we draft another PG/combo guard. OR maybe they are considering possibly not drafting or signing another PG at all… so many ways to read this, unfortunately. On to the game. It was pretty much a disaster in the first half. The Lakers had little purpose to what they were doing with or without Russell. He was a -27 in 12 minutes the first half, scoring 6 points on 3-7 shooting with 1 assist and 2 turnovers. He sank a couple of threes, probably should have had 2 more points because he looked goaltended on a layup in transition. Never really in a comfort zone all night. Overall, very flat game and the offensive flow was ugly. Not a great game to do this in for either Clarkson or Russell with the recent lineup changes and second night of back-to-back in Denver, so let’s see what happens going forward. “It’s hard to go that many games and then just not start, but when you get out there it was the same thing, but the timing kind of threw my routine off but it’s all good,” Russell said. He said he just needs to go out there and compete hard. Rough 24 hours but he needs to step up to the challenge. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-14 shooting (2-6 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 2 turnovers, 3 steals and 3 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a -33. The Action: He charged on a pass-off after not taking the open three. He missed a jumphook in the post. He sank a 16-footer curling off a screen out of a timeout. He airballed a three up against the shotclock (jabbed that release again). He couldn’t connect on a drive and dish, turnover. He sank a baseline floater on a probe. He threaded a pass to Black for the dunk. He was blocked on a drive. He missed a baseline pull-up. He probed and missed the easy one. Second Half: He missed a floater in the lane, but Zubac cleaned up the drive. He swished a deep three. He up-faked, attacked the closeout and drew FTs next time down, he missed both. He missed a pull-up three on iso. He got backdoored for a layup. He got to the middle on the screen-roll but missed the easy floater, got to finish those. He missed a wing three off a swing pass. He slipped a pass to Zubac for a layup. He was blocked on a layup, but looked goaltended after a good steal on a reach. He sank a wing three in transition. He missed a three on a kickout in transition.

Nance -- -- He was pretty much a non-factor offensively, missing jumpers or awkward finishes. He gave a solid effort as the boards and steals show, but the only big to impose his will out there tonight was Zubac. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-8 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 8 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover, 3 steals and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -22. The Action: He missed a corner three. He clanked a baseline face-up jumper. Awful shot on the break after swiping the ball on the perimeter (picked up his dribble early and still tried to finish). He missed a jumphook in the post. Second Half: He forced a travel on a closeout. He cleaned up the missed drive by JC. He missed a long jumphook on iso.

Black -- -- Too many turnovers tonight. He got stripped at times going to the rim. He wasn’t ready for one pass from Russell (I think they gave that turnover to Russell). He got stripped on a handoff, as well. But probably 4 turnovers tonight for him instead of 3. Can’t have that with how little time he spends with the ball in his hands. The Stats: The Action: He crashed the glass on the Clarkson dribble penetration and scored the And-1 putback, he made the FT. His layup was goaltended with no call. He dunked when Russell threaded one to him under the hoop. He missed a jumphook. He wasn’t ready for a bounce pass from Russell, who will probably be credited with the turnover. Second Half: He was stripped on a handoff. He was stripped, turnover. He lost the ball on the break.

Brewer -- -- Shaq guaranteed that Brewer was going to be in the Shaqtin’ A Fool episode on Thursday with a horrible behind-the-back pass to Clarkson that went out of bounds. The two of them were the only two down court for an uncontested score. Just awful. But Shaq later said he’d take him off after Brewer had back-to-back breakaway dunks in about 10 seconds. That pretty much summed up his minutes. Again, some bad sequences where the offense got into trouble because he didn’t take the open perimeter look. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-8 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 2 steals and 1 foul in 17 minutes. He was a -24. The Action: He changed directions, attacked the lane and missed. He made a Shaqtin’ A Fool highlight be throwing a behind-the-back pass out of bounds to Clarkson who was uncontested on the break. He was blocked on a drive at the end of the quarter. He busted out and dunked on the breakaway. He swiped a perimeter pass and took it the distance for another dunk. He couldn’t finish at the rim on a baseline drive. He was blocked on a forced drive because he didn’t want to take the three. Second Half: He was fouled in transition for FTs, he made one. He crashed the glass and scored the layup.

Ennis -- -- He scored off a couple of drives and making a couple techs. My favorite play was probably a simple little two-man game with Zubac that led to an easy bank shot for Zubac. He attacked baseline and went back to Zubac with the pocket bounce pass. Felt like they could run that sequence a lot. Not a lot of meaningful minutes, however. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 2-6 shooting (0-1 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He was picked in early offense for a breakaway. He missed a long two, rushed and off balance. He attacked in transition and scored an And-1 layup with his left, he made the FT. Second Half: He made a tech FT. He hit Zubac off the two-man game for a jumper. He missed a drive. He missed a long three. He hit a tricky runner off the screen. He was blocked on a layup. He made a tech.

World Peace -- -- Wow, he was on the active roster? Down 27, he came in during the second quarter presumably to try to spark some life into a confused, lost roster. Ingram had some foul trouble, so there was that. Good effort from Metta, of course. He had a sweet pass to Zubac on a drive for the score. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 0-1 shooting from three (3-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist and no fouls in 5 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He attacked off the three line and drew FTs, he made one. He posted up and was fouled, he made both FTs. He pushed out a rebound, drew the D on a spin move and hit Zubac for the dunk. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Walton -- -- The Lakers trailed 13-10 when the timeout came with 7:40… So little flow on the floor right now with these changes… He brought in Brewer for Ingram who picked up some foul trouble… Nance in for Zubac and Russell in for Nwaba down 1 with about 5 to go… Black in for Randle… The Lakers trailed 35-23 after the first quarter… He started the Black, Nance, Brewer, Russell, Ennis unit… This unit started to chip away at the lead and forced a timeout down 8… They quickly trailed by 14 and the Lakers called a timeout. Clarkson back in… The Lakers fell back by 22 at the 6-minute mark. Nwaba in to go in a line of Randle, Brewer, Nwaba, Clarkson and Russell. Weird… Down 26 after Luke picked up a tech… He dusted off Metta and brought him in… So Zubac, Nance, Metta, Clarkson, Ennis. Not. Fun… The Lakers trailed 67-43 at the half… Poor, uninspired start and we trailed by 32 when the timeout came… A little run by Clarkson who sank a couple of threes and a jumper. First time he’s looked like himself… Russell in. We trimmed it to 21 when the timeout came… Nance in… Black in for Zubac who was great… Lost of iso, but good run. Nuggets might be coasting a little more now… The Lakers trailed 93-76 heading into the fourth… He started a Black, Nance, Ingram, Clarkson, Russell lineup… Ennis in for Clarkson finally, who needed a break… Zubac and Nance back in… Randle back in with 5:15 left… This might have been an entire garbage time game. One of our worse of the season…

OH. I kept asking what happened with DLO and ppl kept saying he was benched which I didn't understand the big deal since he always gets benched lol

But he didn't start at all today?! He came off the bench? Forwhy? I thought he played well yesterday?

Puzzling 🤔

Thanks DB!

The only positives - your writeup and Zubac.
Other than that - move on, nothing to see here.

Didn't even realized that they were playing today

Having seen the last part of the TNT broadcast and the beginning of the Time Warner post game show, there wasn't much that I missed

Luke and FO apparently believe that DLO and JC can't be the starting backcourt for many reasons that start with their ability/inability to play championship level defense - or provide signs that the potential exist.

Probably the best "silver lining" is that Zubac is getting invaluable FT/experience while building up stamina PLUS his words that he was embarrassed by how the team played

The Phoenix game was the previous low point of the season, because it was the first time I had serious doubts about the core as a unit.

This game takes the cake... because it means either something is seriously wrong with Luke's thinking, the front office's thinking, or D'Angelo's approach either on or off the court.

Thanks, DB.

My hunch is that someone in the new regime remembers how effective JC was at pg in the final couple of months of his rookie season, and has whispered something in Luke's ear about it. He was never given the opportunity to demonstrate that he could sustain what he showed during that stretch, and but for the drafting of Russell, JC probably would have been the Lakers starting point guard for the last couple of years.

It's impossible to say whether the Lakers would have been better or worse over that span, but as to Clarkson personally, I'd submit that by switching his position they took a guy with great height/good athleticism/elite body control/aggressive finishing with good vision and passing ability at the 1, and turned him into a shooting guard with a suspect jumper and below average height.

Now, if DLo turned out to be the super star people hoped he would be, no one would've worried about casting aside a second round draft pick/d-leaguer who finished with a bang in his rookie year on a bad team; but with the way things have gone, it looks like someone wants to revisit the "what if...?"

DLO and JC are the same height

Both have produced offensively (sporadically) and played defense (on very rare occasion for short periods of time)

They weren't winning with DLO and wanted to see if JC can provide that leadership. Both talented players give few indicators that they have the mentality of being a floor general.

Where much is given, much is expected

They are youngsters being handsomely paid to perform as adults - whatever age they are at

Actually Clarksen still managed to score 19 after being thrown into the muck, still impressive. Putting Dlo on the second team really set him up for failure, who can he even pass to? Bizarre experiment, and coupled with that announcing crew, was torture for Laker fans....

Not surprised Zubac was the only big that played well. He only played like 19 minutes against Phily, add the high altitude in Denver and this game was a disaster waiting to happen. Let's see how the other guys bounce back after this one

A couple of reactions.

First Thanks DB for sitting through what did you call it? "horribly choppy with little flow or entertainment value" from both TNT and the Lakers. Listening to Shaq drool over Jokic and give little to no love to Zubac even thought Zubac outscored and out rebounded Jokic made me sick to my stomach.

IMO Clarkson has been hustling his butt off the last couple of games while Russell has been mailing in the effort. I think Luke was trying to send a message that your starting position is not guaranteed and if you want to keep it you need to give better effort.

Moving JC to the starting line up on the second night of a back to back with no practice time with the first unit is asking for failure though.

Zubac looked a little tired and frustrated late in the 4th but second night of a back to back in Denver (high alititude) and playing the most minutes he has played in a single game all year and playing against a very physical big in Jokic allows me to cut him some slack.

I had a friend at the game in Denver and he was sitting with some Laker fans and he was telling me the general consensus there was the Lakers needed to trade Russell and Randle for a closer (Westbrook or George) rather than deal Ingram, Clarkson or Zubac. They just saw more effort from the latter than the former. My friend got pics with Stu, Billy Mac, JC, and Brewer during the pregame warm ups.

Shaq did make some good points about the Lakers not going inside out even though they have some post threats (Zubac and Randle). I personally would like to see the Lakers feed the low post rather than always using the high pick and roll.

And IMO the funny of the game was Brent Barry going though all of Zubac's nacknames to include one I had not heard - Zu Alcindor.

Agree with both of those. Clarkson was getting some reward and Russell was getting some punishment for (most likely) not so much game effort but practice/leadership types of issues.

And this was a pretty bad time to make yet another change and expect the guys not to get killed.
