Sources tell @ramonashelburne that Lakers’ Deng, Mozgov (a combined $136 million) are shut down for rest of season:

Quote:

Before he was fired, Kupchak told the Los Angeles Times it could take "five or six years" to evaluate the success of the free-agent signings of Deng and Mozgov.

"This is not something that's evaluated in a half-season," Kupchak told the Times last month "Let's wait five or six years ... and look back on it and then we can say how our drafts went and how trades went and how free agency went."

When I look at the situation, it's unfortunate. but I wouldn't underestimate Pelinka finding a trade partner for both of them, the FO probably wants there own brand to create on the roster.

Who in their right mind would trade for those contracts? Perhaps once they get to their final years, but by then they would've done plenty of damage to the Lakers cap situation in the prior years.

The only possible way I see to get rid of them would be to package them with other assets, whether young talent or draft picks. But there is no way to get rid of them without including valuable assets.

If we could somehow trade one of them away, I could see the FO stretching the remaining contract, if need be of course.

I am so happy Mitch was let go...

If it wasn't gift wrapped, Mitch couldn't get it done.

That could be just it, if they are trying to package them, they may do well with a new season comes a clean slate, I'm sure they can put up solid numbers, and if there is a slim chance that the Lakers are dangling the top pick to a team for a superstar, best guess is they will try to unload one of them

It takes "five or six years" to evaluate?

I really do not understand that quote.

Seriously, why would Kupchak make that quote and how did Jim Buss approve these signings when Kupchak likely told him that we would see the results of these signings in 5 or 6 years?

If Jim Buss had any intelligence, he should have prevented these signings.

Thank god, he was removed.

What's the difference of this compared to just not giving them minutes like Luke's doing a few games before?

They'll now wear formal clothes during games? Will they still attend practice sessions?

How on earth do you see them moving Deng and Mozgov? They have to be to at least in the top 10 for worst contracts in the league.

Thank God someone has the sense not to play them, so we don't win any games because of them, being how awful they are.

You have a better chance of tanking by playing Moz over Zubac. I think this is for two reasons:

1. To evaluate our young talent.
2. To hit home and highlight why they fired Mitch and Jim.

Fair enough. Seemed obvious to me, but reporters don't ask me questions every day.

Bums like this were playing for the Lakers the past few years at near the veteran minimum or as salary dumps on expiring deals. But because no one would take the Lakers FA money, Mitch made these abysmal signings. These contracts were awful before the ink was dry. Ultimately, finished off Mitch's tenure here.

Now Magic and Pelinka are operating and managing a roster with essentially two dead weight horrific deals. No team will take them on without a significant asset attached, and the Lakers are not in that position.

Unfortunately Magic and Pelinka were brought in with these 2 bad, massive contracts. If I was them, I would try to unload one and stretch the other. My offseason plan, if we kept our #3 pick, would be to do the following:

1. Persuade Wolves to take on Deng's contract for Pekovic's expiring. Deng and Thibs have history. Rumor is Thibs wanted a veteran presence in that locker room. Pekovic for Deng and Houston's 1st Round Pick. Straight salary dump.

2. Stretch Mozgov's contract before 2018 free agency. I don't think there are any big free agents in 2017 that Lakers would target so keep him on the roster for another year to minimize stretch impact.

3. Trade for a superstar. Lakers will have a wealth of young talent with Randle, Russell, Ingram, Assumed Top 3, Clarkson, Zubac, Nance. Trade 2 and the 2019 first round pick (protected) for a superstar, most likely target being Paul George.

Randle + Clarkson + 2019 1st Round Pick for Paul George.

If things go right, you could have the following starting lineup next year and also set you up with cap space for 2018 free agency.

PG - Ball
SG - Russell, Young, Brewer
SF - George, Ingram
PF - Nance
C - Zubac

2018 Free Agents - Cousins, Westbrook

Bingo.

Most importantly it gives the Lakers a opportunity to evaluate both players and see if they are gonna be with the team going forward.

Exactly...Not even Pelinka can work that magic. We are stuck with these 2 stiffs until maybe the last year of their deals. Another example of the huge blunders by Mitch and Jim. Even if Walton wanted Mozgov, Mitch and Jim should've told him that the asking price is too much and moved on.

Inexcusable to be this financially irresponsible.
