Free Agents
  • 36 Year Old Mitch Richmond (2002)
  • 38 Year Old Horace Grant (2004)
  • 36 Year Old Vlade Divac (2005)
  • 35 Year Old Jim Jackson (2006)
  • 34 Year Old Aaron McKie (2007)

  • 37 Year Old Theo Ratliff (2011)
  • 36 Year Old Antwan Jamison (2013)

If we are talking deals that cost us chances in free agency, not picking up Devean George's option and then being forced to use the MLE to re-sign him ranks up there. Iirc, Billups and Camby were both available at MLE contracts at the time.

The main problem with both HORRIBLE signings was the length of the deals.

Deng came into the league when he was 19/20. He was 31 when signed a 4 YEAR DEAL.

Mozgov was 30 when he signed a 4 YEAR DEAL.

Even superstars on the wrong side of 30 only sign for 2 year deals (Kobe & LeBron)

We had money and we spent it FOOLISHLY. Both guys had mileage (Deng) and Injury histories (Mozgov). 2 years /36 million for Deng and 2 years 28 for Mozgov would have done it. If not, so be it.

LeBron and Kobe only signed two year deals because either that's all the CBA allowed or because they wanted the flexibility to sign a bigger contract sooner.

Might as well add to the list trades where they gave up a first rounder to dump a guy, like Sasha and Luke. Man, that makes it more depressing.

Deng + Mozgov = Two reasons why Mitch & Jim are gone. Absolutely terrible deals.

Does anyone think Cuban would do Devin Harris for Luol Deng and Hou pick?

Dallas has a ton of cap space next season.

We all knew Deng and Mozgov were going to be Lakers at some point because they were scouting them for years, but should had not given them 4 year deals.

Very possible if Deng's contract ended in summer 2018.

And Mozgov's too another $34 mil we could of had in summer 2018 if Mozgov and Deng were off our books.

FYI, Jeff Green has identical cap salary with Luol Deng.

A simple Deng / for Green swap works in the trade checker.. not sure if we need to add sweeteners but Green hasn't exactly been doing any good this year and we get to save cap flexibility.

Luke's fault for playing Deng as a SF, rather than as a 4.

FYI, Jeff Green signed a one year contract with Orlando.

100. When can't a player be traded? Can players be given "no-trade" clauses in their contracts?

Quote:

In addition, teams cannot trade players under the following circumstances:

For two months after receiving the player in trade, if the trade aggregates the player's salary with the salaries of other players. However, the team is free to trade the player immediately, either by himself or without aggregating his salary with other salaries. This restriction applies only to players who were acquired using an exception (and not cap room). (Also see question number 88.)

When the trade deadline has passed. Teams are free to make trades again once their season has ended4, but cannot trade players whose contracts are ending or could end due to an option or ETO.

That could has helped us at the deadline, but too late now.

The problem is that we had no other options at SF besides Ingram. Also Randle and Nance were at the 4.

WE had Young on the team. Deng hasn't played well as a SF in years and somehow Luke thought Deng could play SF on probably his worst team in his career at this age in a more difficult conference

Deng didn't play much better at the 4 this season than the 3 I don't think.

Signing ancients always felt like we were copying a Spurs thing, but the Spurs seem to get production from theirs. They even sign the old ones we left at the side of the road and they do well there. Horry went 2/38 for us one year and hit a trophy winning 3 for them two years later. Kevin Willis was about 47 years old and getting play. We do things like sign Vlade and re-sign Ho in 2004. Vlade played in a handful of games and looked like a warmed-over corpse, couldn't even flop any longer, his chief benefit. Grant was visibly past his prime even in 2001 and had a good performance every 5th game or so. It was a surprise when and where he would mark himself present. Going to the well twice was dumb no matter how much Phil liked old guys. Malone was a good pickup and decided to get hurt for the first time in 20 years. We should've taken that as an omen.

Iirc, Richmond didn't play in the Finals at all except for the final 30 seconds of the series where he hit the last bucket. NOICE!!!1...
