Russell Drops 40… In the grand scheme of things, this was really one of those perfect games for the Lakers right now. It was a spirited first half from the team as D’Angelo Russell set the tone early with 18 first quarter points as he moved back into the starting lineup with Nick Young out with the flu.

The Lakers led by 4 at halftime, pulled out to a 10-point lead midway through the third quarter and held that going into the fourth. They showed fight.

The Lakers were playing clean with few turnovers for most of the game. The Cavs, however, took advantage of some self-inflicted wounds by the Lakers in the fourth quarter, turnovers turning into easy buckets. Kyrie and LeBron proved too much to handle for the young team despite D’Angelo dropping a career-high 40 points on 14-22 shooting and 6 assists.

The Lakers fell 125-120 to the defending champs. They’d give up 43 points in that ugly fourth quarter.

“At the end of the night win or lose as long as you give play like that and you’re up for that challenge, that’s a fun night coming to work,” Luke said.

Agreed. The Suns lost tonight and the Sixers put another W in their win column in the tank standings. The tank rolls on, but the young kids made it entertaining.

Russell -- -- A love letter from Russell to his haters. The youngest player with 40 points in a regular season game for the Lakers. Think the haters will cut him slack? Doubt it. “When he gets going, he’s tough to handle,” Luke said. He was executing to perfection out of the gates with 18 first quarter points on 6-8 shooting, draining a number of threes, midrange shots and dropping a couple of dimes. He’d have 22 at halftime as the Lakers had the lead. Good job taking what the D gave him and scoring efficiently. “We had that passion for one another,” Russell said of how the team played. He had some nice screens from his bigs. He and Zubac had some good chemistry working, but Randle was setting some great screens tonight, as well. That allowed him to take threes, get into the midrange with his man on his hip or attack the paint as the defense dictated. Or, he’d also find Randle on the screen-roll. Everything he does is seemingly judged by a higher standard. When he does something well, the bar is quickly raised. When he stands up for teammates, he didn’t do it right. People will ask for consistency after a great game like this. He is young…very young. Guess what young players don’t do? Play consistent ball. Russell’s stretches of impact ball, however, are getting longer and the consistency will grow. Still, he had a 39-point game last year and the haters piled on relentlessly. A 40-point game now this year, so don’t expect much love from the critics, Dlo. A game from now, a week from now, they’ll pile on again. Just use the comments to fuel the fire. Really, though, Laker fans should give the kid some support to polish his game. Let those outside the organization fuel that fire, not those who wear the purple and gold and cheer them on. Asked about what Kyrie said to him after the game, he said, “He supported me and he knows I want it.” Some can see it. The Stats: He scored 40 points on 14-22 (7-12 from three, 5-7 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 6 assists, 1 turnover, 2 steals and 2 fouls in 41 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He attacked the paint, drew the D and hit Zubac for the layup. He hit Clarkson in transition for the three. He swished a three off the handoff from Randle. He hit a long floater from the wing, working the two-man game. He sank a wing jumper off the Zubac screen. He sank a wing three off the great screen from Randle. Herky jerky drive off the screen and he drew FTs, he made both. He missed a floater, we got it back to him relocating into the corner and he hit the three. He drained a quick-fire wing three next time down, on fire. He missed a quick attempt from three on the next trip. He drained a pull-up at the elbow working off the Zubac screen. He swiped a perimeter pass and took it for the layup. He missed a three off the Randle kickback. He missed a deep three at the end of the half. Second Half: He sank a pull-up on the baseline after nailing his man to the floor on some nice work with his handle. He missed a jumper in the lane, we got it back and he hit Randle for the three. Hockey assist to Randle on the screen-roll (who hit Zu for the dunk). He missed a turnaround in the post. He sank a wing three on a kickout. He curled into the lane off the Randle handoff and drew FTs at the rim, he made both. He hit Randle rolling for the jumphook. He missed a three off the kickback with Randle next time down. He hit Ingram on the slow cut Huertas play for a layup. Change of pace to freeze the D and he scored the layup. He drained a three off the Randle screen next time down. Heat-check three from the wing and bang, it went down. He got his man on his hip and rattled in the And-1 from the top of the key, he made the FT for the new career high. He was called for a double-dribble, getting a little off balance after picking up his dribble. He blew past his man on iso and drew FTs in a crowd, he missed both. He zipped an inbounds pass to Ingram for the layup. He missed a deep three.

Randle -- -- Some great screens tonight, which opened up Russell, but also opened up the roll for Randle. How rare is a good pick and roll with Randle? It just doesn’t happen because he’s often slipping screens in those situations. The slip should be the rare exception. He had 5 assists and 5 boards at halftime. He’d come up short on the triple double but led the team with 7 assists. He sent Thompson into the locker room with shooting arm to the face on his was down on a layup attempt. He got a tech on it (but he was finishing a layup, weird tech with the not a natural basketball move). We had him defending a variety of guys and running a lot at center. Some switches on Kyrie late in the game that killed us. Seems like a familiar story. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-9 shooting (1-3 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 7 assists, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 38 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He freed up Russell for three off the handoff. He missed a three straight away. Nice extra pass to Ingram on the break for the dunk. He completely took out Russell’s man with a screen to free him up for three. He got tapped on a tip in. He fed Nance for the three. He faced up, spun and hit the jumphook in the paint. He ran through Thompson to draw FTs (if Thompson goes down, probably a charge), he made one. He missed a layup. Second Half: He drained a wing three on a kickout. Great screen next time down (ran hard to set it), then he rolled and Russell hit him (Randle then made the extra feed to Zubac for the jam…that’s what a great screen will do). Another great screen and Russell hit him for the jumphook in the paint. He missed a pull-up 17-footer. He was fouled in the post for FTs and made both.

Ingram -- -- Lackluster first half as he missed a number of shots from the perimeter. He’d heat up more in the second half on his way to the 18 points. He really has to work on his transition D. He let a guy go right past him tonight for a dunk as he was just jogging back after a made basket. He’s done this all season long. For all the little things he does well, this one is starting to drive me a little nuts. Just one of those many little things to work on for the youngin. You could see him getting bounced around a little tonight. First, it was on a body foul on Love in the corner, that he just bounced off of without so much as a flinch from Love who hit the And-1 from the corner. Later, there was the push out by Ingram where he got bumped and that threw him off balance to cough up the ball. Finally, LeBron just bumped him off a drive and sent him flying. Once that weight and strength picks up that physicality won’t be so apparent. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 8-15 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 1 block and 3 fouls in 40 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He missed a good look at an elbow jumper. He missed a turnaround in early offense. He dunked trailing the break when Randle made the extra feed. He missed a 14-footer in transition. He missed a corner three. He missed a baseline jumper. He finally swished a pull-up wing jumper. He pushed out with speed, got bumped and fumbled the ball away. Second Half: He got a switch with a guard, backed him down and banked in the turnaround to start the half. He iso’d and hit a long wing jumper. He scored a reverse when Russell hit him on the slow cut play that Huertas used to run. He swished a long wing jumper on a low kickout. He attacked baseline, spun away from the baseline and hit the mini Dirk fade. He scored a layup when Russell found him on the inbounds pass. He missed a short one across the lane out of a timeout. He attacked and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a tough chuck from distance.

Clarkson -- -- Luke on playing Clarkson and Russell together: “For whatever reason, the two of them on the court together when we’ve tried it hasn’t been statistically very good for us. But it was good to see it worked tonight.” Better job with some of the passing tonight. It helps that Russell was hitting and guys were setting better screens. He had 11 points on 4-10 shooting and 4 assists at the half, but Kyrie was torching us for 21 points on 8-11 shooting in the half. Kyrie would go for 46 in the game. Clarkson would finish with 19. We used Clarkson and Nwaba as primary defenders. Late in the game, we went to automatic switches that got our bigs into trouble trying to defend Kyrie. Just too many points. Some sloppy turnovers or wild drives in the fourth quarter from Clarkson that the Cavs turned into quick counterstrikes for scores the other way. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 8-18 shooting (2-7 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 6 assists, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 41 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He sank a good look at a wing three on a kickout from Zubac. He sank a pull-up three in transition. Bad off-balance attempt from three working off the early screen and he missed. He missed a wing three (might have been on the line). Soft touch on a baseline pull-up on iso. He crossed over and missed the pull-up bank from the right wing. He hit Nance off the two-man game for the open jumper at the FT line. He weaved through the lane and hit the little jumphook. He made a tech FT. He missed a wide open corner three, gathered himself well, though. He missed a wild drive in early offense. Nice job using the baseline to cut of Kyrie and force him to pick up the dribble. Second Half: He missed a long three up against the shotclock. He missed a floater. Great lob to Nwaba for the jam (that had to be in the right spot with that tight of D). He somehow airballed an open baseline runner. Wild drive in transition in a crowd, turnover, score the other way. He attacked Love with speed and scored a layup. He got Love on a three and blew past him for a layup. Bad post entry that was knocked away for points the other way. He missed an early offense three. Quick attack in transition and his layup was goaltended by LeBron (very close). He attacked the paint with speed and scored a layup.

Zubac -- -- Shorter minutes for Zubac as we went small quite a bit in this one. He scratched out double-digit scoring in his time out there. Really like some of the screen work with Russell, freeing him up but also getting into good position for the pass. I want to see those two playing a lot more minutes as the season goes on. Defensively, still needs to work on trying to block shots with that left hand. He did have a good challenge against LeBron on one drive. Zubac, himself, got rejected badly by Thompson on a throwdown attempt at the rim. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-7 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 assists, 1 block and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He posted up and hit Clarkson for the three. He scored a layup off the drive and dish from Russell. Nice challenge on LeBron’s drive to force a miss. He was rejected on the throwdown attempt. He posted up Love and drew FTs, he made both. He attacked down the lane and hit the layup. Good job overpowering a couple of players on the offensive glass to draw a foul. He missed a spinning turnaround in the paint (should have taken the first jumper a second early). Second Half: He got tapped on a turnaround in the post. He hit the jumphook rolling on the weave play. He dunked off the extra feed from Randle on the screen-roll.

Nance -- -- Quiet night from Nance. He drained a three but really didn’t impose himself on this one. No disruptive action on D for steals or blocks. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-5 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 2 boards and 3 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He missed a step-back 17-footer. He missed a hanging layup. He sank the FT jumper on the pick and pop. He drained a wing three. Second Half: He bit on a pumpfake on the three line from Love and clobbered him.

Brewer -- -- Nearly a double-double in this one. That was very quiet with a couple of late scores. Love seeing him out on the break or in semi-transition catching teams off guard with his speed and elevation. In the half court, it’s a bit clunky with his shot. He and Nwaba are very similar in that regard. Nwaba is a much cheaper version. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-8 shooting (0-2 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 9 boards (2 offensive), 1 steal and 3 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He missed a wing three trying to beat the shotclock. He grabbed a board, pushed it out and scored the layup off the inside-out move. Second Half: He missed a jumper on iso. Quick attack in early offense from the wing and he scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He attacked LeBron and missed the short bank. He got the ball knocked away from him twice, pushing him back to center court where he stepped on the line, turnover. He missed an open corner three. He sank a short one. He dunked late in the final seconds.

Ennis -- -- Short minutes in the first half, but he was able to get a score and a steal to make while out there. The Lakers were a +8 while he was out there. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 1 assist, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 5 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He attacked from the corner and scored a layup. He was swatted out of bounds on a drive. He jumped a passing lane for a steal but gave it up too early and off the mark, but we still scored. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Nwaba -- -- He came in for Clarkson late in the first quarter and got thrown into the fire against Kyrie. Good challenge for him, but Kyrie lit us up. I’d have liked to see Nwaba with a little more time against LeBron for fun. Offensively, how about that lob dunk set up for him? He was covered tight, but still managed to throw it down while heading under the basket after some great elevation. Some very small lineups out there where he was lining up at the freethrow line as out PF. He had some issues with Richard Jefferson during one of those stretches. I’m guessing the Lakers will sign him for the rest of the season after this second 10-day contract. He gives them good energy and Luke seems to like him on the small ball units that space the floor better. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-5 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He gave up an And-1 layup on a straight-line drive by Kyrie moments after entering the game. He couldn’t finish a drive. He rejected Kyrie badly on a recovery. He missed a layup but scored on the putback off a quick bounce. Out on the break, he scored a tough one around the D after gathering a bad pass. Second Half: Don’t know how he elevated to throw down that one-hand lob jam over Jefferson who was right there, but damn. Bad transition D, however, to give up a score to Jefferson shortly later. Out of a timeout, he went right after Jefferson and drew FTs on a spin in the paint, he made one.

Walton -- -- Fast pace start as both teams were scoring quickly. The Lakers led 20-17 when the timeout came midway through the quarter. Russell leading the charge and Clarkson hitting a couple threes… Nance and Nwaba in for Zubac and Clarkson… Luke called a timeout shortly later down 7. A 12-2 Cavs run… Brewer in for Ingram… Russell with 18 points in the first quarter… The Lakers trailed 31-28 after the first quarter… Nance, Brewer, Nwaba, Clarkson, Ennis lineup. Yikes… Lakers up 3 when Ingram returned for Nwaba… Russell back in for Ennis with 7 minutes to go… Lakers up 7 on the 16-0 run when the timeout came midway through the quarter… Zubac, Randle, Ingram, Clarkson, Russell up 6… Kyrie taking it to Clarkson… The Lakers led 59-55 at the half. Only 2 turnovers. The Lakers had an 11-6 advantage on the break… They pulled out to a 10-point lead midway through the quarter… Brewer in for Zubac… Russell drilling the Cavs again… The Lakers led 92-82 heading into the fourth… Nance, Nwaba, Brewer, Russell, Clarkson lineup… Ingram in for Russell, Lakers up 6 after 3 minutes… Russell and Randle back in with 7:37 up 3… The Cavs tied it up with 5 minutes left. Luke called a timeout… Lakers going into automatic switches on the perimeter on Kyrie and getting into trouble, fading fast. Pro tank move… No D down the stretch… “I was really pleased with the way our guys fought all night long,” Luke said... Just 5 turnovers from Laker players tonight. Well done...

DB, you think Russell will end up dropping 60-70 at some point in his career?

Great to see DLO with 40. "Love letter from Russell to his haters."

Fun game. I had zero clue Brewer almost had a double double, lol. Wonderful to see Dlo leading the charge with the rest of the young kids behind him.

Thanks, DB!

Great to see DLO back with starters and producing. It should be a message to Luke too. DLO is better as a starter and Clarkson is better as a backup.
The team needs a much better defensive coach. To work with players both individually, but also with team schemes. Luke has his own affections which actually hurt as badly. Small-ball lineups were effective to start the season, but have given no advantage whatsoever after that. Switching on everything at the end of games has also only been an advantage at the tank department. But Luke continues to use these.
I like Brewer. He is an excellent sub off the bench and hopefully his defensive attitude spills to other players too. If he only shot better... You are right, DB; that they are similar with Nwaba and the latter is cheaper, but production-wise there is no comparison IMHO. Yet. Maybe in time? But I am not hopeful. At least Brewer sometimes takes the three, but Nwaba even does not consider it. That's not just skill, it's the fear and attitude. I don't mind Nwaba as a Laker until the end of the season, but I would not do that. I would instead try one of the point-guards from the D-League. Our own Magette, to start with.

I decided not to watch the highlights of this game because of the 43 points given up in the 4th quarter. That's just saddening.

I became a critic of Russell sometime in early January, and why that occurred was because I was tired of his inconsistency and him being a liability on defense. The greater part of my criticism was that the Lakers go when his jump shot does and that hasn't been consistent enough for me to trust it; and this was true even in this game. I'm sure others fans feel the same way. I'm glad that he had a good game, but the criticism of him would only dissipate when there’s consistency. My favourite part of his stat line tonight was the assists, so it does show that he's getting his man good shots.

Thanks DB for the recap as always. I guess this would be my last post til' next month.

DLO - where much is given, much is expected.

JC - fireplug

Team played with energy. Cavs played like the Shaq/Kobe teams, cruise till the end of games then impose their will to win the game

When the shots are going down, team plays at a much higher level

While I like the energy from the team, it seemed like the Cav's were conducting a layup drill after Zubac went out. I have to go back and look at the recording of the game but it seemed like Jefferson, Lebron and Kyrie went to the hole unimpeded after he left. This small ball lineup late in the fourth is killing me.

Agree. Tbh the lakers really need to have the front court of Ingram/Nance/Zubac to really be passable on defense.

You're right, I still won't cut DLO any slack........but if he scored 4 points, and it had a direct effect on winning a fricken game, I might change my opinion.

Brewer had 9/9? Da heck?

It's amazing how much of an anchor TT is on defense. I thought the dynamic of the game changed without him.

I went and had really good seats. Some observations from up close:

-Russell is going to be a monster. The crowd was in awe every time he drained a three. Seemed to get fatigued down the stretch-- there was one set on offense where he just stood in the corner with his hands on his thighs.

-Lakers don't move the ball well. Too much iso ball down the stretch and the team's offense was dependent upon Russell and Ingram being hot. When they cooled off, the Lakers just couldn't score.

-Ingram has ridiculously long arms. Looks like a stick figure.

-Nance's jumper is broken.

-Zubac is looking like he'll be a starting caliber player eventually.

-Randle is an absolute matador on defense. It seemed like whoever he was guarding would either drain an uncontested three or blow by him for an easy layup. On offense, he doesn't really have any awareness and just charges into the paint and throws it up at the basket. Needs to be traded ASAP.

-Kyrie had one of the quietest 45+ point nights I'd ever seen. I was surprised when I looked at the box score and saw that he had that many. It never really felt like he was lighting us up-- he just was steady and consistent with his scoring.

-LeBron does not look as big in person as you would think he would.
