Can you tell them apart without being told in advance who it is?
Yes, and I think it's odd that anyone would be confused.

I'm curious if this confusion is specific to me only or if it's widespread...

Yes, he's one heck of a defenseman for the Red Wings. Knows how to lay a hit on someone even when that someone is himself.

Lol! I hear you. If I tune into a broadcast already in progress, I definitely have to listen for a little bit to figure out which one of them it is. Their voices/cadence/etc. are very similar.

Especially nowadays, Marv sounds pretty haggard.

Marv Albert - - - - - ^- - - -^- - -^ - - ^- - - ^ ^ ^ //////////// ^ ^ ^ - - - - - -

Kevin Harlan - -^ ^ ^// /////////////////////////////////////^^

Marv keeps it fairly steady throughout the play until his usual interjection to cap off a score

Kevin builds it up early in the play then goes full throttle until there's a score or stoppage. You should hear his radio calls for football.

It's like if you asked me to differentiate between two similar shades of green. I could do it if they are side by side. But if I saw them in isolation from each other, I wouldn't know there is a difference.

It's the exact same for Harlan and Marv to me. I am sure they sound different, and if I cared enough to acclimate myself to the difference, I could probably learn it quickly. But since I haven't done that, I can't really tell the difference.

Marv has NY accent. Doesn't hit you over the head with it, but it's pretty apparent.

YESSSSS, AND IT COUNTS!

For me, Marv is the second-best basketball announcer of my lifetime, behind, well, we all know who.

I think Harlan was Influenced by Marv but I've never heard one and thought it was the other.

Yes I can, but I've been listening to Marv my whole life, especially when I lived in NY and was a Knicks fan. Nice that I grew up listening to him during every Knicks game, but I am bummed I didn't grow up in SoCal because Chick was supposed to be the best.
