Lakers v. Timberwolves… These two teams will be seeing a lot of each other to close the season.

This looked like a typical Lakers game as they fell back by a healthy amount in the third quarter. They had the “L” on lock if this was a normal night. But it seemed like any wild shot that was put up, just fell. Clarkson banked in a three, hit an And-1 three, beat the shotclock with a couple of tough, off-balance threes on his way to a career high 35 points. Corey Brewer had a 10-point scoring run himself.

And like that with a late-game run, the Lakers caught the TWolves and sent it into overtime. They blew the game open, scoring 21 points in overtime.

Over a stretch at the end of regulation and OT, the Lakers went on a 21-4 run to turn the game around and take the eventual 130-119 win. It seems like every night now, someone is having a career game.

“Just keep continuing to fight,” Clarkson said, “growing together and playing for each other. That’s the biggest thing. No matter what the circumstances, keep fighting, keep playing for each other.”

Russell -- -- Some great passes in this game and his best one ended up without an assist and Ingram blew the finish on the break. I loved the bounce passes to Randle off the two-man game. The chemistry with those to in that part of their game has been slow coming but lately it’s been strong. It could be Randle setting better screens, which we’ve seen, but also Russell looking for him and being clean on the passes. Some excellent moments between those two tonight. Good work by Russell getting to the line tonight. If he can find a way to consistently scratch out that many FTAs game, that’s trouble. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 3-9 shooting (2-5 from three, 7-8 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 6 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 40 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He broke down the D off the dribble and dumped it to Zubac for the And-1 dunk. Wow, brilliant no-look feed in transition, but Ingram choked the layup. He got past his man off the dribble but was blocked by the help D on the layup. He swiped a kickout, pushed it out and scored a layup between defenders. Nice hockey assist on the fly without taking a dribble and it led to a Zubac dunk. He was fouled on a layup attempt, he made both FTs. He missed a wing three. He was blocked on a jumphook. Quick-fire pass to Ingram for three. He drew FTs on a baseline jumper, he made both. He called his own number, backed his man down and drew FTs, he made one. Second Half: He was stripped on a drive. Great backhanded bounce pass to Randle after snaking through the D off the screen and it led to the dunk. He sank the corner three in transition. He fell asleep on D and gave up a lob dunk. Another great bounce pass to Randle through the D for the dunk. He missed a wing three. He missed a wing jumper. He sank a big three off the screen at the wing with 2 minutes left. He missed a wing three for the lead. Overtime: He swiped a jumpball that the TWolves thought they had. Great advance off the outlet to Clarkson leaking out for the score. He swiped a pass and was fouled, he made both FTs.

Randle -- -- Those flashes. Lots of them in this game. You had to look past some of sloppy play on the break early on in this one, but they were there. There was a moment in this game after Randle sank a couple of threes that the D started to close out on him there. He then attacked that tight perimeter D to score a layup. That’s what you hope the future holds. I’m loving that he’s putting up the threes and doing it with confidence. A couple other plays you want to see more of: a huge putback jam late in the game on the offensive glass. Often, he comes down with those boards, but it’s nice to see him play above the rim. The other play was a sweet block on KAT in crunch time and then he scored on the other. The Stats: He scored 23 points on 8-14 shooting (2-4 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 12 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He attacked across the lane, bumped his man and hit the short fade in the lane. He pushed out the board, stepped on the gas and drew FTs, he made one. Poor ice D to give up a layup. He attacked and missed the fade in the lane. He missed a layup in transition. He choked a putback layup. Out of control on the pushout, charge after losing control of the dribble. Quick attack to his right and he drew FTs, making both. His kickout was picked for a dunk. He drew FTs on a roll down the lane, he made both. He hopped into a three off the pick and pop and swished. He was picked on the break for a dunk the other way. Second Half: He swished a wing three on the kickout from JC. He was stripped on a drive off the three line. He dunked off the bounce pass from Russell on the two-man game. He up-faked at the three line (they’re worried), attacked and scored on the drive. He dunked when Russell slipped a bounce pass to him in the lane. He couldn’t power up and finish after an offensive board in a crowd. He blocked a baseline drive. He missed a tough three at the quarter buzzer. He missed a good look at a three straight away. He rejected Towns drive. He attacked on the other end and banked in the runner. Overtime: He threw down a putback jam.

Clarkson -- -- Career high in points and three’s. “Forget about the last game and come out here and make baskets,” Clarkson said. He practically couldn’t miss from three tonight as the shot was looking like money. Sure, there was some luck. He banked in one and hit a couple of very tough off-balance threes at the end of the shotclock. But his perimeter game destroyed the TWolves tonight. Good to see a number of guys in this stretch run getting new career highs. Between him and Brewer tonight, it seemed like any wild shot they threw up was going in. To be fair to Clarkson, though, he was money on all his good looks, too. Great game with the 35 and 5. The Stats: He scored 35 points on 13-20 shooting (8-10 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 5 assists, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 47 minutes. He was a +17. The Action: He drained a wing three working off the screen. He sank another three off the handoff from Randle. Off-balance step-back three and he wasn’t close (first two had great balance). He missed a wing jumper. He probed to his left and hit the drifting 12-footer. He worked around the high screen and swished the floater, nice control. He hit Randle on the pick and pop for three. He missed a drive down the middle of the paint. Wild drive after passing up a better look from three. Second Half: Nice balance on the elbow jumper and he drained it. Bullet feed baseline to Zubac for the dunk. He kicked out to Randle for the three. He missed a wing three. He hit Russell in the corner for three. He was forced into a tough three to beat the shotclock and it fell. Wild, off-balance three with the shotclock low and it somehow went in. He banked in a three, wow, they are all falling right now. He sank a good look at a three off the screen by Larry. He hit a huge And-1 three, getting hit by a big after the release, he made the FT to cut it to 1. Overtime: He sank a three off the kickout from Randle. He leaked out and Russell found him for the score. He attacked left, was smothered and threw in a tough bank off a double clutch. He missed a floater after escaping a double, but Randle slammed it down.

Ingram -- -- They cut his minutes short with the tendinitis, but he still had some strong run. He’s getting very confident with his handle, maybe too confident on occasion, but it’s great to see that level of aggressiveness as he attacks with those long strides. Somewhat quieter game, but he still consistently scored in this one. No more 1 for X games from our rookie. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-8 shooting (1-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 30 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He iso’d, spun around the D and scored the layup. His kickout was picked off. He pushed out the break and scored a layup around the D. He couldn’t finish the short one-hander in the lane. Quick fire sideline three and he swished. Second Half: He faced up in the post and drew FTs, he made both. He pushed out the board, changed directions and scored the layup. He was blocked on a runner on the baseline. He tried to dribble through a crowd and was tied up. He got tapped on the corner three.

Zubac -- -- The high turnovers were due to some illegal screen calls. We went small for a lot of this game. Super small with guys like Brewer at PF with Randle or Nance at C…or both on the floor while u watched. Some troubles finishing around the rim as the help D swarmed on him. His scores came off some great passes from teammates. Zu also had a nice one to Nance for a dunk, too. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-7 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He missed a hook on the first possession. And-1 dunk off the drive and dish from Russell, he made the FT. Illegal screen on the perimeter. He dunked off the interior feed from Nance. He was stripped trying to finish at the rim. He missed an 18-footer. Nice read in the middle of the floor to bounce a pass to Nance for the dunk. Second Half: He was blocked from behind trying to finish. He dunked off the bullet feed from JC. He was blocked by the help D after backing his man down. He was called for an illegal screen and sat.

Black -- -- Brief sighting of Tarik tonight, then we left him on the bench. Foul prone and a turnover in his 3 minutes. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 3 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He missed a jumphook. Awful perimeter pass, right out of bounds to start the second quarter. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Nance -- -- Kind of amazing he only had 1 steal in this game. Some good pass deflections in this one. I don’t know how many times he got his hands on a ball on D, but the 1 steal doesn’t reflect that level of disruption. That’s what we want from him on D – disruption. When he’s on his game, we get it. When he’s missing in action, we don’t. Several dunks from Nance in this one. Most of his points came off those, nothing else was really falling. I like seeing those Randle/Nance lineups when both of those guys are playing with energy. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 4-11 shooting (5-6 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a +17. The Action: He took the pass off the two-man game and fed Zubac for the dunk. He hammered down a soaring dunk off the bounce pass from Nwaba. He missed an elbow jumper. He dunked on the break. He missed a reverse. He dunked off the interior feed from Zubac. Second Half: Poor telegraph pass at the elbow and that allowed a man to be blindsided. He missed a jumphook. He freed up Clarkson off a great screen for a three. He missed a jumphook across the middle of the paint. He swiped a bounce pass on the other end. He missed a floater in the lane. Overtime: He missed a shot in the lane up against the clock. He was fouled trying to score at the rim, he made both FTs. Intentionally fouled, he made both. He was drilled in the head on a loose ball foul for FTs, he made one. Garbage time dunk off the pressure D.

Brewer -- -- Sheesh. He had a one-man run with 10-straight in this game that you could hear all of those in the LG tank or game threads groaning about I’m sure. Brewer had a loose ball from Clarkson go to him and he hit a three, he threw up an And-1 prayer that went and he threw down a putback jam. Players are going to play. He was mixing it up and being disruptive, especially in our small ball units. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-8 shooting (1-2 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He sliced through the D and scored a layup with his left. He pushed out the board and fed Nance for the dunk. He airballed a sideline three. He was picked on the perimeter, good hustle back but was late and goaltended the layup. Second Half: He scooped up a loose ball and hit a three. He spun in the lane and hit a wild bank out of a timeout. He curled into the lane, threw up an And-1 prayer and it went, he made the FT. He missed a floater in the lane next time down. He was called for a goaltend on a nice rejection attempt at the rim. He threw down a putback jam. He missed a putback attempt.

Ennis -- -- Some up and down moments. It was either a great play or he was in over his head and in trouble. Not a lot of minutes. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 turnover in 12 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He scooped up the loose ball, pushed it out and scored the layup. He threw a lob out of bounds. Second Half: He attacked off the three line and reversed around the D. He was rejected badly on a layup. He choked a layup on a straight line drive off the feed from Larry. Not close on a layup, getting in a little too deep.

Nwaba -- -- He was a +19 in his 26 minutes. Luke threw him into crunch time and OT. I didn’t think he did anything sensational defensively. Just hustled on both plays and did a good job not sticking out too much on the perimeter on the offensive game. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-5 shooting (2-3 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 2 assists and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +19. The Action: Great bounce pass under the D to Nance who hammered. He scored on a tip-in. He scored the And-1 layup on the leakout, he made the FT. Second Half: Great offensive board in a crowd but he was blocked on the putback attempt. Quick first step past his man for the layup. He blew past Wiggins and was fouled on the dunk attempt, hitting the floor hard, he made one. He up-faked a defender and dunked.

Walton -- -- Nance in for Randle who picked up 2 fouls in 7 minutes… Black and Ennis in for Russell and Zubac, Lakers up 1… The Lakers trailed 27-26 after the first quarter… Black, Nance, Brewer, Russell, Ennis... Nwaba in for Black who had two fouls… Lakers gave up a run midway through the quarter and trailed by 7 when the timeout came… Randle back in and he talked Luke into leaving him out there after he picked up his third foul. He didn’t pick it up… Sloppy execution in the second quarter. The TWolves had 9 steals in the first half… The Lakers trailed 67-54 at the half… Nance in for Zubac, Lakers down 12 after 7 minutes… Nwaba in for Russell down 14. Lakers floundering a bit on D, as usual… The Lakers trailed 88-80 heading into the fourth… He started the Nance, Brewer, Nwaba, Clarkson, Ennis lineup… They cut it to 5 and forced an early timeout… Clarkson’s threes keeping the Lakers close… They tied it up off a Brewer three… Brewer with 10 straight for the Lakers… They took a 1-point lead off a block by Randle on one end, then a running bank on the other… A 9-0 Lakers run in the past minute and a half… Russell missed a wing three… Overtime… He started a Nance, Randle, Nwaba, Clarkson, Russell lineup… Clarkson on fire and the Lakers led by 8 midway through OT… A 21-4 run for the Lakers up to this point…

Not a bad game but his shooting range in this game looks like it was six inches (every shot he made was a dunk, tip in or layup). 7 rebounds including 2 offensive is very nice. If the guy would only extend his shooting range......

With the young players alternately being really good on offense on one game and the following one disappeared.

What will happen on Sunday with no Shaw to give them energy?

Luke went with the small lineup (again) to close the game but used Nance at the 5 instead of Randle and it made a huge difference. His energy and hustle made it difficult for the Wolves to get the ball to KAT and they eventually pulled KAT about half way though OT because he was not effective.
