The Home Stretch… A good night in these final days of the season is for the Lakers youth to have a quality game, but the team still falls short to stay where they are in the tankathon.

This game saw Zubac sprain ankle before breaking a sweat, Russell fighting off a poor shooting night, and little real impact from anyone.

After a 37-37 opening quarter where neither team played defense, the Lakers would lose every quarter the rest of the night on their way to the 119-104 loss.

The team is great about giving up career high nights to people. Ricky Rubio enjoyed a 33-point, 10-assist game. Towns added 32, Wiggins 27 and the Wolves coasted to the win.

“Winning on the road you have to do on the defensive end,” Luke said.

Russell -- -- Usually, when Russell hits a three early it seems like he’s going to have a good game. That wasn’t the case tonight as he struggled with his perimeter shot after that first make. It seemed like he was fading back and on his heels quite a bit on jumpers, leaving them short as a result. He later started passing up open looks and looking for teammates as he tried to adjust. Some turnovers forced off of those and also off some sloppy handles. We saw a couple rare things from him: a dunk off a baseline drive and also a lob to one of his bigs for a dunk. He was getting frustrated with the calls going against him on D for impeding progress off ball and picked up a tech. He did have 3 steals to lead the team. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 4-14 shooting (2-8 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 6 assists, 5 turnovers, 3 steals and 5 fouls in 37:30. He was a -13. The Action: He hit Zubac for the elbow jumper, working the two-man game. He swished a wing three off the Randle kickback. Too low to Black in the paint, turnover. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He attacked the paint and had his layup blocked, close to a goaltend. He airballed in the high post trying to draw a foul. He backdoored his man on a cut, took the pass and quickly fed Black diving for a layup. He was blocked on a layup. He knocked down a pass on the other end, pushed it out and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He missed a three. He had his dribble poked away for a dunk the other way. Second Half: He missed a wing three coming off a screen. He scored a layup when Brewer found him under the hoop. He missed a three, fading back a little, but got back in transition to get the stop. He then lobbed to Tarik for the throwdown (rare lob from Russell). He missed a pull-up from the wing, fading back again. He forced a pass to Nance that was behind him, turnover. He smothered Rubio on the perimeter and tied him up. He drew FTs on a swing through, he made both. KAT pushed him down for a foul. Russell hit a three on the other end (maybe that woke him up). He picked up a tech. He missed a three next time down. Poor transition D after that to give up a dunk. He fumbled away a dribble, losing the handle on the inside-out move. He missed a wing three, short. Clever play in transition, sealing big to slow him down, then bouncing to his man (Robinson) for the slam. Extra pass to JC for a three in transition. He froze the D on a fake handoff and took it baseline for the rare throwdown. Wild cross-court pass turnover.

Randle -- -- Tough battle with Towns tonight, who has the size advantage. The refs weren’t letting Randle defend with the same physicality that Towns was able to attack with. That resulted in some fouls. Later in the game, Randle adjusted and drew a charge in the post. That’s one of those little learning things that maybe he remembers in the future. Randle was getting frustrated with that officiating and picked up a tech as a result (in addition to his 5 fouls that had him sidelined a little early in the second half). He had 10 points and 8 boards at the half and finished with the double-double but really not a lot of impact. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-12 shooting (1-3 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 13 boards (6 offensive), 1 assist, 3 turnovers, 1 block and 5 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He missed a wing three to start the game. Kickback to Russell for the three. He missed a putback (should have gone glass). He took the pass from the corner and powered in a layup over the help D. He missed a layup driving left. He sealed his man, took the airball like a pass and scored the layup. He attacked down the middle of the lane, knocked over a man and scooped in the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He weaved through the D off the dribble but choked the layup. He let Towns drive past him for a layup with no challenge. He had the ball swiped by a double team on the other end. He sank a sideline three, no hesitation. He threw a rebound out of bounds. Way short on a three at the end of the half. Second Half: He rejected a layup in transition. He attacked to his right, brought it back to his left and missed. He picked up his fourth foul and a tech. He drew the charge foul on Towns who had been getting away with drawing fouls when Randle resisted (so this time he didn’t). Another foul on Towns next time down. Then Randle picked up a foul with a bump. Verticality and he got the miss on KAT’s drive. He scored a putback layup.

Clarkson -- -- Decent offensive game from Clarkson with a good mix of scoring and passing. Our starting guards, however, combined for 9 turnovers. He was sinking some threes and had another one of those behind-the-back fakes to score a layup. He’s added that to his skillset in the last couple of games. I like the mix and how well he involved his bigs. It seems like he’s getting a little more comfortable by the game. Defensively, well, we showed no resistance as a team so no sense in critiquing anyone in particular tonight. “We were just forcing them dudes to make shots,” JC said. They certainly didn’t force them to miss shots. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 6-13 shooting (4-8 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 7 assists, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 39:32. He was a -19. The Action: He hit Randle for a layup. He fed Black in transition for the dunk. He didn’t hit rim on a three. He lost control of the ball, but saved it back in to Black for the score. He sank a wing three in transition. He sank a deep three straight away and right behind the screen. Bad pass and he goaltended trying to block a layup, good effort. He missed an open wing three. Wild pass in the paint off a drive, right out of bounds. He attacked down the middle of the paint, faked behind his back and scored the layup. He attacked in transition and kicked to Ennis for the three. He lost the handle on a drive, turnover. Second Half: He made a tech FT. He missed a floater he should have lobbed to Black. He was blocked on a drive. He pushed out and fed Larry for the dunk. He got tapped on a three. He ball-faked, attacked the pressure D and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He sank a three straight away. He missed a three next time down. He drained a three in transition. He missed a pull-up. He missed a runner.

Zubac -- -- He twisted an ankle coming down off a jumphook on another foot. A high ankle sprain and he was done for the night. That was in the first couple minutes of the game. “We’ll see tomorrow what is happening,” Zubac said. He said he had no idea how long he’ll be out for. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-2 shooting to go with 1 foul in 2 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He sank an elbow jumper off the two-man game. He missed a jumphook and went down in pain.

Brewer -- -- He’s always pushing the tempo. I think you can almost get a good feel for whether he’ll score or not about a step over midcourt. If there’s a gap or some space for him to get into the offensive zone at high speed, the D is in trouble. That’s where he did most of his damage tonight. He missed both of this threes. Hopefully, we see Ingram back in the next one. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-8 shooting (0-2 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists and 1 foul in 18 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: He missed an open corner three. He missed a lefty scoop across the lane. He scooped a loose ball up and took it for the layup. He changed directions in transition with speed and scored a layup. He kicked out in transition to JC for three. He took the handoff and scored a layup. He attacked off the three line with speed and scored a layup. Second Half: His layup was blocked at the rim. Quick feed to Russell in the paint for the layup off a give and go sequence. Aggressive in transition, he drew FTs, made one. Quick attack off the three line and he drew more FTs, he made both. He missed a corner three in transition.

Nance -- -- Yeah, these are the game that drive you a little nuts. He had a couple of blocks, made a jumper and dunked once. That was it. Didn’t impose himself on the glass like you want to see and wasn’t disruptive defensively. Just very little impact and very little of his athleticism affecting the game. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-6 (0-2 from three) to go with 2 board, 1 turnover, 2 blocks and 1 foul in 28 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He sank a wing jumper. Looked like he wasn’t ready for a perimeter pass, turnover. He was stripped in the paint, turnover. Great timing on the help D to block Wiggins in the post. He blocked a drive with Ennis. Second Half: He hesitated and missed a wing three. He slammed after taking the pass from JC as he trailed the break. He missed a layup on the break. He blocked a layup. He missed a wing three.

Nwaba -- -- Not much impact in this one despite the big minutes. He hit the boards and tried to battle on the offensive glass. Few of those plays that make you notice him. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-4 shooting (1-3 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist and 3 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He kicked out to Ennis for the three. He had his reverse rejected. Second Half: He up-faked, attacked baseline and drew FTs, he made both. He follow-slammed a missed layup on the break. He missed a sideline three on a kickout.

Ennis -- -- He had 12 points on 4-6 shooting in his first half stint. Great first half. He didn’t score the rest of the game, unfortunately. He actually led the Lakers with a +0. So sad. No one in the positive with JC with the team low -19. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-8 shooting (2-3 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 1 steal and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He jumped a passing lane to swipe the ball and take it for a layup. He swished a wing three on a kickout. He attacked an open lane and missed the layup, but Black cleaned it up. He nailed the D to the floor with a hesitation dribble and scored a layup. He attacked from the three line and drew FTs, he made both. He swished a wing three on a kickout in transition. He attacked from the wing and missed the layup. Second Half: He missed a scoop on a drive right. Short on a wing three.

Black -- -- He led the Lakers with 13 points in the first half. He only missed one shot in the game and was finishing easy ones at the rim. He was imposing himself on the offensive glass. “Just playing my game, offensive rebounds,” Black said. He had a big slam off a missed drive by Ennis. Great to see him back to himself these last couple of games. Guards are looking for him more (Some nice feeds from Russell including a lob and a great save/pass from JC to him), but he’s also mixing it up for garbage points. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 7-8 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 9 boards (5 offensive), 2 blocks and 1 foul in 23 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He dunked on the break, changing ends with speed. He grabbed a board between defenders and powered in the layup. He blocked dribble penetration. He scored an And-1 layup off the save from Clarkson under the hoop, he made the FT. Nice dive off of Russell’s cut and Russell found him for a layup. Putback slam off the Ennis drive and miss. He banked in a lefty jumphook in the middle of the paint. Second Half: He crammed down a lob pass from Russell. Nice help D baseline to force a pass to be thrown out of bounds.

Robinson -- -- With Zubac going down early, that resulted in Robinson getting into the rotation in the second half. You could see him impose his energy on the game. One of the few guys with a little bounce in his step. Unfortunately, he didn’t impact things much on the defensive end. We need to use him to pressure and double team. That’s where he’s at his best. He’s got to be aggressive, otherwise he’s not reacting with much impact (there was at least one dunk where you were wondering why no one challenged). The Stats: He scored 12 points on 6-9 shooting to go with 3 boards, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He attacked off the three line and scored a layup. Quick step baseline and he reversed. No help D to give up a dunk. He attacked right, let the D fly by on the up-and-under for the layup. Pressure D with Russell and that caused a turnover. He was called for offensive interference. He iso’d and missed a wing jumper. He slammed when Russell took Robinson’s man out then fed him in transition. He banked in a jumper straight away, oops. Wild kickout out of bounds, turnover. He airballed a putback attempt. He scored a layup dribble through the soft D. He iso’d and missed a baseline jumper.

Walton -- -- Zubac to the locker room with the ankle injury early. Black in… The Lakers called a timeout down 16-5… Lakers down 2 when Nwaba and Ennis came in for Brewer and JC… Nance in for Randle, score tied with 2 minutes left… No D by either team. Tarik running wild for scores at the rim… They were tied 37-37 after the first quarter… Black, Nance, Nwaba, JC and Ennis to start the quarter… Randle in for Black, Lakers down 1… Russell back in for Ennis with 5 left to go. Good run by Ennis… Brewer and Ennis back in… The Lakers trailed 67-60 at the half. Towns and Rubio with 21 and 20, respectively… Randle picked up his fourth foul and had to sit after 4 minutes for Nance, Lakers down 9… Lakers down 12 when Nwaba came in for Brewer… Robinson in for Black down 12 with a couple minutes left… The Lakers trailed 96-82 heading into the fourth… This is the kind of game where Lou might go off at this part of the quarter and maybe something crazy happens. Nothing crazy is going to happen with this unit… Down 14 midway through the quarter when Randle returned for Nance… They made Rubio a shooter all night and he got a new career high…
