Metta World Peace… With D’Angelo Russell attending to his family, Luke called for Metta World Peace to fill in with the starters in this final home game of the season.

Laker fans love him and rightly so. When you hit a huge three in an epic game 7 against the Celtics … then top that off with an epic press conference … and subsequent night out that would tire the Dos Equis guy (while wearing his Laker jersey all night!!)? Then he donates his championship ring to mental health charity? That dude will always get Laker love.

He did not disappoint tonight with 18 points and 4 steals to lead the team to the 108-96 win over the Pelicans, who sat their two All Star bigmen.

Five straight wins for the Lakers and Metta led the charge tonight. He buried four threes, turnaround jumpers and fades. Brought roars from the crowd and his teammates to their feet.

“They were asking me to take 50 shots,” Metta said. He was dead tired after taking 17 of them.

His career has had all sorts of themes to it -- from villain to hero and everything in between. His roots may be in Queensbridge, but his heart is here in L.A., and the city returned the love in beautiful fashion tonight.

“Obviously, a lot of joy in my heart watching Metta to have that much fun playing,” Luke said afterward.

The last couple of seasons under Scott I was beyond done with the season at this point. I’ve looked forward to every one of these games the past few weeks. The youth—whether it was Russell, Randle, JC, Nance, Zubac, Ingram, etc.—made the game fun to watch because you could see their games growing. While they didn’t stop that tonight (how about Ingram’s throwdown?), it was certainly the veteran Metta who stole the show this evening, and rightly so.

Well done, sir.

Randle -- -- Only half a game from Randle (really not even that). Some sweet passes from Julius to start the game. Just excellent read and react finds to setup teammates for fouls and scores. These aren’t easy passes to make, either. We really do have some pretty good passing young guys. They just need to commit to it thoroughly. We saw a little chemistry with Ingram in this game as Randle was cutting off ball or getting himself into position for BI to find him for scores. Nice to see those two teaming up. A bit of a foul-prone close to the first half and he opened up the fourth with a quick foul so he sat for Robinson. That was his night. He’s made a lot more progress this season than people probably realize. Again, this is his real second season. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-7 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists and 4 fouls in 15:42. He was a -2. The Action: He attacked to his right and hit the short one-hander with his left. He crossed over and was fouled on the finish attempt, he made both FTs. He attacked a seam in transition and scored the layup. Sweet drop pass to Ennis cutting form the high post for FTs. He missed the jumper from the top of the key. He took a pass from Ingram under the hoop for a layup. He drew FTs on an early offense attack on iso, he made one FT. Late in transition and we gave up a dunk. He was swatted trying to power up under the paint. He cut off Ingram’s attack and scored the layup. He had 11 points on 4-7 shooting and 5 boards at the half. Second Half: He fouled after a minute and sat.

Ingram -- -- Wow. Wow. I think I saw Ingram grow up once again on another dunk this season. With the third quarter clock winding down, Ingram attacked to his right off those long strides. He stretched out more than I think we’ve ever seen and he threw down a nasty And-1 dunk through the contact. He came down and yelled like a young warrior who just made a kill in the heat of battle. That was sick. “That may be the first time I’ve gotten emotional,” Ingram said. That’s the No. 2 pick in the draft showing some of what the future holds. Really like the passing sequences with Ingram in this game. This kind of stuff will go unnoticed by national media or box score checkers. An assist sometimes isn’t just an assist. These aren’t just swing passes to a shooter, but quick read and reacts to a player off ball who is on the move. For someone his age and at his position, it’s one of those many traits/skills that just seems to come natural to him. No tunnel vision, no forcing, just playmaking according to what is happening on the floor. Playing ball at a high level. He led the team with 4 assists in the first half and led them with 6 when it was over. Love seeing how his game has grown and evolved…hate that we’re at the end of the season and won’t see him for several months. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-16 shooting (0-2 from three, 3-5 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 6 assists, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 1 foul in 28:24. He was a +8. The Action: He drop stepped, banked, missed but scored the putback. He missed a short turnaround from the midpost. He attacked left, but brought it back right and missed the drive. He curled behind JC, took the pass and scored the layup. He missed a wing three behind the screen. He iso’d, drop-stepped and hit Randle baseline under the hoop for the layup. He attacked in transition and drew FTs, he missed both, argh. He crashed the glass to throw down a missed three. He missed a turnaround in the post. He was held on a cut down the lane for FTs, he made both. Sweet read to find a cutting Nwaba with a bounce pass for a layup. He attacked at the end of the quarter and kicked to Nance for the three with a second left. Sweet read to hit Julius cutting behind him for the layup. He took his eye off a pass from JC after cutting baseline, turnover. He sank a 20-foot pull-up on iso. Second Half: Quick swing pass to JC at the wing for the open three. He missed a turnaround. He missed a three on a kickout. He missed the pull-up off the curl (would like seeing him attack the rim a little more to start the half). He missed a pull-up wing jumper. He missed a wing jumper. He swished a tough turnaround right off the post catch and with a man all over him. Nasty, nasty And-1 dunk with 2.4 seconds left on one of the plays of the season as he stretched out and threw down over the D, he made the FT.

Clarkson -- -- Another steady, efficient game from Clarkson, scoring 15 points on just 5-8 shooting. He was knocking down threes and had some nice playmaking. His feel for the game and system has improved a lot. He’s probably the guy who’s benefited the most from Lou being traded (Russell has, too, and certainly Ennis now getting an opportunity here). We played in this dual-style system where the second unit ran simple stuff and looked for quick strikes, not going deep into our sets. Too often, JC had to switch gears, run our offense and work with the starters, and we’d end up seeing those crazy hit and miss plays from him – the ones where he’d have to put up some wild, OC shot in the paint or get caught in the air with no one to pass to because he had been playing with just one gear. Since Lou left and we’ve moved him into the starting lineup, we’ve seen him more in the flow and more effective. He may not have had as big of games at times, but they’ve had more of an impact. Wish he had another month of playing with the starters. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-8 shooting (3-5 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 2 turnovers, 2 steals and 1 foul in 25 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He found Randle in transition for a layup. His cross-court pass was picked off. Out of the timeout, he found Ingram off the curl cut for the layup. He traveled on a drive left. He missed a floater attacking off the three line. He missed a wing three. He attacked a mismatch and flipped in a very difficult lefty scoop over the D. Inbounds and he quickly sank a three to beat the shotclock. He hit a pull-up coming off the early offense screen. He was hacked creating at the end of the half, he made both FTs. Second Half: He swished a three to start the half. He drained another three off the quick swing pass from Ingram. Wild three attempt off the loop, not close. He turned the corner off the two-man game, didn’t get OC on the attack and fed to Robinson for the dunk. A bit wild on firing a pass to Ingram cutting, turnover. He knocked a lob away to get a stop.

Nance -- -- He drained a three in this game on a kickout. That was probably the big highlight. But he didn’t really impose himself on this one like I want to see. Defensively, he had some troubles with Holiday’s craftiness when they had to switch. It looked like slow-mo but Holiday turned that into several scores at the rim. Nance was also late to react to a dunk he could have prevented. He should be a double-double every night (especially since he led the team in minutes tonight). He’s improved on that impact/effort part of his game the past few weeks. I want that to continue. That’s where we will see him elevate his game. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 2-7 shooting (1-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 foul in 31 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He took a transition feed that somehow got through the D and was fouled, he made both FTs. He missed a deep three in early offense. He swiped a pass. He missed a floater. He drained the corner three on the drive and kick from Ingram at the end of the quarter. Second Half: He missed a 20-footer, short. He attacked the paint off a sloppy horns set and was rejected. Late reaction on a switch defensively and we gave up a dunk. He sank the elbow jumper off the two-man game. He missed a reverse under the hoop.

World Peace -- -- This was like Kobe’s 60 for him. Most likely his last home game as a Laker player (right?) and he didn’t disappoint. He drained four threes on his way to a team-high 18 points and a team-high 4 steals. He was just killing it out there. So fun to watch. His teammates were all over him all game. Every big play, every score, they were on their feet. So much love from the young guys. Afterward, they poured ice water on him. “I could have died,” Metta said of the shock of the cold water. By the end of the night, he was gassed (only 25 minutes but 17 shots). Still, how many of you wanted to see Ennis hit him for that lob he called for on the break to see what would happen? So happy for Metta to have this kind of game. I love how much he’s turned his career (and life around). Love that he will always be thought of as a Laker. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-17 shooting (4-10 from three) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 4 steals and 1 foul in 25 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He missed a wing jumper. He missed a sideline three. “I don’t plan on retiring but we’ll see what happens,” Metta said. Second Half: He got tapped on a 20-footer off the screen. He drained a three off the inside-out sequence with Robinson. He sank the fade across the lane. He missed a three after stripping a man on one end and getting the kickout to the corner in early offense. He posted up a guard and swished the turnaround jumper. He posted up, faced up and knocked down the 17-footer. Illegal screen on a busted play. He pushed the ball up court and drilled the wing three, bench loving it. He stripped a man to ignite a break. He missed a three, we got it back to him and he drained the deep three. He missed a step-back three next time down. He sank another three off the Ennis kickout. He missed a flat elbow pull-up. He attacked the paint and missed a layup. He called for a lob on the break, didn’t get it, faded to the corner and missed the three (throw him the lob, Ennis!). He missed a flat three.

Brewer -- -- Some pretty good passing from him at times (that lob to Black, especially). I’d love to see more of him getting to the middle off those screen-roll sequences to set that up. He also had a nice lob to Nwaba in the first half. And not to be outdone, he finished a tricky lob himself. That was much tougher than the breakaway layup/dunk he came up short on. Always some adventures with him at the rim. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-6 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 5 assists, 1 turnover, 2 steals and 2 fouls in 23:36. He was a +5. The Action: He stripped a man to ignite a break. He was hacked on a Euro-step in transition, he made one FT. Nice find on a lob to Nwaba for the throwdown. Athletic finish on a tough lob pass from Ennis in transition. Great push out, but he choked the finish in transition. Second Half: He jumped the passing lane to swipe it and take it for an uncontested dunk. He got middle off the screen-roll and lobbed to Black. He spun in the lane and hit the tricky turnaround. He missed a bank after a travel that didn’t get called.

Ennis -- -- His three ball wasn’t there for him tonight, so I think that slowed him down a little and had him second guessing later in the game. Still, these are the kinds of games you happily take from your backup PG as long as he’s also delivering those big games every now and then. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-5 shooting (0-3 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 3 turnovers, 2 steals and 3 fouls in 29 minutes. He was a +12. The Action: He drew FTs off a great drop pass from Randle in the middle of the paint, he made one FT. He missed a three from the wing, coming off a screen. Turnover on the lob pass as Nance had traffic in front of him. He hit a floater off the weave to start the quarter. He missed a wing three off a handoff. He lobbed to Black for a score. He charged in early offense. Hesitation dribble, then a drive baseline for the layup. Off the mark on a lob pass, but Brewer somehow turned it into a hoop. Second Half: He attacked and kicked to Metta for the three. He missed an open wing three in early offense.

Black -- -- He struggled a bit to finish in crowds around the rim. Sometimes he had to power up in crowds, sometimes he was fouled, sometimes he was missing some easy looks. Still, he had some highlights with the lob dunk finish or on the defensive end with the 3 blocks. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-9 shooting to go with 9 boards, 1 steal, 3 blocks and no fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He was stripped (hacked with no call) trying to rise up off a nice interior feed from Robinson. He swatted a drive out of bounds. He pulled down a lob pass and powered back up for the score. He missed a jumphook rolling down the lane to take the pass. He couldn’t finish a tough one over the D off a pass under the hoop. He blocked a shot in transition. Second Half: He didn’t seem ready for a pass in the paint in transition and we fumbled, but we recovered it somehow. He ball-faked, attacked across the lane and missed the easy jumphook. He couldn’t power up in traffic off an interior feed, but we got the miss back. He missed a sideline jumper off the inbounds. He attacked a crowd and hit the runner, nearly running over a man. He dunked off the lob from Brewer.

Robinson -- -- He essentially started the second half once Randle sat after a minute with the foul trouble. Honestly, I felt like the game was pretty much over then. The Lakers were going to impose their energy on the Pelicans, who as their two bigs and they’d cruise to the win. That’s what happened. We didn’t let anything silly happen and the team took care of business. You know you are going to get an honest effort from him every night. His only miss of the night was a Dirk-like fade he probably shouldn’t have attempted. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-5 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He faked the weave, attacked right and scored the layup. Second Half: He kicked out from the post to Metta for the three. He jumped a passing lane to swipe the ball on the slow perimeter pass and threw down the And-1 dunk, he made the FT. He dunked off the two-man sequence with JC. Wow, clock down to a second or two and he got fouled on a three, wow (not that it would matter much, he made only one FT). He iso’d at the elbow, attacked left and banked. He missed a Dirk fade in the post. XXX

Nwaba -- -- Good first half from Nwaba. He had several scores at the rim on his way to 10 points on 4-4 shooting, and the Lakers took a lead while he was out there. Some ball handling issues in transition in the second half. Actually, quite a few as we struggled to finish cleanly on the break multiple times. Love some of the D from him tonight. He recovers very well to his man and also has some great reads on help D at times. I think once he gets more experience and can make even those initial moves tough for his opponent, he’s got a ton of potential on that end of the court. Now, it’s up to him to make him more of a threat on the other end from the perimeter. Big offseason coming up for him. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 6-8 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist,, 2 turnovers, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: Ingram found him cutting in the paint for the layup. He scored a putback next time down. He was fouled getting out on the break, he made both FTs. He stepped out of bounds on a push off in the corner trying attack the close out. He threw down a lob dunk in transition. He sank an awkward face-up 10-footer in the lane (awkward because the play busted, shot looked fine). Second Half: He missed a jumphook off an interior feed. Great help D to break up a lob from the corner. Great reach to strip a man, he then got the ball in transition and took it for the layup. He was stripped in transition. He fumbled the ball away on the break. He was stripped out of bounds again in transition. He attacked off the three line and scored a layup.

Walton -- -- Good call with the Metta start… Last home game for Luke and no more tank as the lottery standings are cemented in place now. I feel like he has mixed reviews for this season. I thought they implemented a lot early on, then got bogged down without much progress in the system. I was hoping for better weakside movement all season and it was slow to develop. I said before the season I was most disappointed that we didn’t get a great defensive coach. I think that’s what he needed the most and that showed all season. Still, I like where we are headed. This season has been much more enjoyable than the last couple despite the losing… Lakers down 1 when Metta sat for Ennis midway through the quarter… A lot of focus on Ingram when Russell out. Some post work, some iso, some passing… Randle and Clarkson out for Nwaba and Black, Lakers down 6… Black, Robinson, Brewer, Nwaba, Ennis lineup… Foul-prone start to the quarter from the Lakers… Some good transition/early offense action from the Lakers. They took a 5-point lead midway through the quarter… Randle in for Robinson… Lakers up 8 when Nwaba sat for Clarkson with 5 minutes left… Ingram in for Ennis… Brewer and Black out for Nance and Metta… The Lakers led 57-53 at the half… Randle with a quick foul a minute into the half and he sat for Robinson… The Lakers pulled out to a 10-point lead… Lakers up 12 midway through the quarter when Metta sat for Nwaba… Lakers up 7 with 3 minutes left. Black, Ingram, Brewer, Nwaba, Ennis… The Lakers led 85-73 to start the fourth. Black, Metta, Brewer, Nwaba, Ennis lineup… Lakers up 15 when a timeout came with over 8 minutes left… Metta lighting it up. Luke pulled him for Nance with 6:29 left… Timeout by Luke with 4:10 left, Lakers up 13. Metta back in (leading the Lakers with 18 points)… They’d cruise to the win…

It was a great summer league (uh, last home game of the season that gave opportunities for the youngsters to feel good going into the summer playing against subs in this game, in San Antonio and probably Golden State

Great to see MWP play great

Didn't know Ingram could be emotional

Great to see the hunger in the players

These past few games have provided which of these talented young players have the potential to be superstars - Ingram and probably DLO

It will be an interesting off-season that officially starts with the draft selections

Imagine if the Lakers got a major star in the off-season - whether it is through the draft or FA, they might be on the level of the Rockets or Thunder

Since Thibbs has a need for a veteran defender he can trust, could Deng be his answer that would help the Lakers

Who is more valuable - Black or TRob, especially with Zubac's development

With Swaggy probably will opt out, there is more money that can be used

Thank you for your sustained efforts on LG's behalf. I always look forward to your summary-opinions (and particularly when I am unable to watch a game.). It's fun to track your assessments as they morph a bit during the year. Was wondering if you might consider doing a fuller write up summarizing the year each player had this season? Do your regular thing on the last game, but add a paragraph or two for each player and something about each person that doesn't get action in the final game? Your long-range perspective is valued.

It is not yet time to liquidate our assets in trades (and become a fringe playoff team) so I hope this coming off-season doesn't have a front office making too much noise with half-baked trades (neither George nor Butler are really gonna save us if the team is decimated.)

I loved seeing Metta out there, leading the team in points. I was hoping he would get to 20 so we could say it was 1/3 of Kobe's final game. And to see how he turned both his career and life around is an inspiration! Hope the youngsters have absorbed a lot from him and play hard always.

IMO TRob. I would move Nance to the small ball C and keep TRob as the backup PF behind Randle.

The problem is that Black is under contract next year and TRob is a free agent. I am pretty sure someone is going to be willing to pay TRob more that the Lakers are IF we keep Black. So unless we can find a taker for Blacks contract I think TRob is gone.

Black's contract has a team option, so he can be let go this summer. I think the Lakers have to decide whether or not to pick up his option by July 7th.

I'd prefer Black to Robinson because Tarik is the much better defender, but fiscally Robinson makes more sense if the Lakers need the cap room.

Thanks DB! It was great seeing MWP out there playing well and getting all the much deserved love from the fans in attendance. I will never forget that huge 3 he hit in Game 7 vs. the Celtics.
