I know lots of people oppose it, but I for one, would love to be able to visit LA or Sf (vice versa) on a weekend by rail. Counting the hours spent going to the airport and passig through security etc, this rail could save lots of time...

Proposed to be up and running by 2025. 2hr 40 minutes SF to LA. That's moving it!

Not really....the first sections are to be completed by 2025. Don't forget they haven't even purchased all the land yet and this is not even counting all the lawsuits and engineering challenges it has to get out of the way. I would imagine with all the delays this thing probably won't be fully online until past 2030, which is what the current optimistic projected date for it be completed.

my guess is the ticket prices will not make it a worthwhile option over plane travel. so many better infrastructure projects that money could go to.

Don't forget they will have to tunnel thru the San Gabriel Mountains to connect this thing with the Antelope Valley.

It won't. They will have to buy off large lots of land from farmers and private land owners along the way, not to mention pay off any legal settlements along the way. It may have been a great idea if California was relatively undeveloped but this thing will go over many areas already inhabited by not only people but environmentally sensitive areas as well.

You'd think but we barely have quality public transportation options in LA to begin with.

Hyperloop won't happen anytime soon since it doesn't have the backing of the governor. Either way the biggest obstacles to high speed rail are land acquisition and having a budget to actually build the thing. This is why mass transportation projects like high speed rail are so hard to do in the US since we have this thing called property rights.

The land easements are mostly in place from what I understand however very little, if any actual track has been laid. As 80 said above, the land to build on....

I wouldn't be surprised if Musk came in and changed it from a train to a hyperloop at some point. LA to SF in 30 min sounds pretty good. Besides, trains are so 90's.

Might as well hope for a Stargate. At least it will cut down on the land acquisition problems.

Sounded like a good idea, but it seems like they are making the routes go thru as many cities as possible, basically eliminating a lot of the "high speed" in high speed rail. A HSR from LA to SF along the 5 would've been less complicated and wouldn't have much of the land use issues since the state owns most of the land. I'm guessing they wanted to connect as much of the central valley as possible to get more officials on board the project.

The president builds a wall to keep out terrestrial neighbors so California builds a stargate...

Whats sad is that when this is completed someday, it won't be that high speed at all. It will be surpassed potentially by both hyperloop, if they ever work the kinks out and maglev trains which are starting to become more prevalent in countries like Japan. Neither of them are possible to use on the rail systems they are constructing for the California HSR.

We have airplanes that are faster, cheaper and fly right over all of the land based problems that will inevitably make this project fail miserably.

1890s?

I agree, they need someone like Musk...and they need to be thinking much more outside the box.

Its not so much the thinking, as there is red tape that prevents massive public projects like this to ever come to fruition. Unfortunately, China has the perfect political system to implement something like the hyperloop because the people have no rights....if the government wants to demolish your home or seize your property to build it they will do it. Here in the US we have the legal system to prevent or delay something like this from happening.

The idea of high speed trains is nice but its been nothing but a money pit big projects from our government always end up being wasteful nightmares.
