Quote:
The sister of Isaiah Thomas was killed Saturday morning in a one-car accident outside Seattle.

Chyna J. Thomas was 22 years old.

The car accident occurred around 5 a.m. on southbound Interstate 5 near South 288th Street in Federal Way, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Witnesses reported that the car, a 1998 Toyota Camry, was being driven normally at first.

“All of a sudden it started to drift very casually onto the left shoulder,” State Patrol spokesman Trooper Nick King said.

The car traveled about 50 feet partially off the roadway until it hit a Jersey barrier.

“That vaulted the vehicle head-on into the sign post,” King said.

Tragic but I admit my first thought was I hope it wasn't alcohol related.

Oh man that is horrible. Condolences to IT and his family, that's just an unimaginable tragedy.

From the description of the accident, and the fact that it was 5 am, I'd bet she fell asleep at the wheel

This had to be 14-15 years ago. I was on 5 South headed towards San Diego to my folks' house. It was super late, about 1:00 am, and I was dog tired. But I figured hey, it's 90 minutes, I can make it. So at about 30 minutes before I'm home, I got the music going loud, windows down, eyes peeled. Next thing I know I'm swerving trying to get back right. I had dozed off. The only thing that woke me was hitting the bumping reflectors that separate the lanes. Scared the (bleep) out me. It happened just that quick and it could've all been over in a flash. God Bless the Thomas family. Horrible, horrible tragedy.

I've experienced that in broad daylight and I don't recall being particularly tired. It was more of the monotony of the freeway at a certain point, maybe. However, no way to really know because that phenomenon can happen at any time. That incident above was about 20 yrs back and I don't recall having any other such incidents as potentially serious as that one before or since. An anomaly for me. That's what makes that sh so scary. It can happen to the best of us. You don't have to be a bad driver or irresponsible person. The rush of fear you get when your eyes open to see whatever's in front of them that you are forced to instantly deal with sucks.

Will it? I think that would make me weary to trust technology at that level as far as driving.

We know people will get behind the wheel if they are tired, sleepy or drunk. I think a self driving car that has been thoroughly tested and debugged is a lot safer than a person in such a condition behind the wheel.

This x100. Doctors and patients trust technology for medical procedures including surgery, but technology cannot handle the complexity of driving? Once these cars start to roll out and become more common, there will be statistical proof that they are safer than human drivers who drink/do drugs/sleep/eat/text/call/put make-up on while driving.
