Remember, he was still a teenager in his first season with us
For a center to become a good defender, he has to well...be a man first. Something Zubac still is not. You grow into your man's body at some point at 20-22. Not at 19.
However, even for a 19 year old, he does seem strong, he does have a good base and once he does grow into his man's body he should be a very good defender IMO.

Actually it is kind of scary to imagine how good he will be..
No doubt that all of his athleticism will be vastly improved next season. Quickness, explosiveness, strength..everything. And then it qill be improved again the season after when he will be 21.

Just remember Bynim a few years ago and how much difference it made for him once he grew into his man's body. He went from a guy that was struggling against more physical centers to a player capable of bullying everyone with his strength. I kind of expect the same from Zubac.

Btw, now that I've mentioned Bynum, how do you guys compare him and Zubac?

Similair built. I actually think they are on par athletically too. Of course prime Bynim was more athletic than the Zubac we saw last season but I do expect Zubac to get that athletic around 21.
If yoi compare Zubac this year to a rookie or sophmore Bynum, its close.

What's the biggest difference between them is that Bynum was an absolute blackhole. A part of it was by design because Mike Brown was a horrible ISO coach but Bynum legitimately was a low IQ blackhole IMO. Zubac however has a great feel for the game. His screens, off the ball movement, passing, fundamentals...he is already so good at all rhose things.

Bynum was a beast in his prime for us. Kinda scary to imagine...but Zubac should be better. He has even better tools IMO.

No he doesn't.

I'm with my long time forummate, Zubac rlz, he is the future of the franchise.

Every weird shot players like Julius and Nwaba take is one less beautiful play we have the privilege to watch Zubac doing

To play this game you need some grace, Zubac is so smooth with the ball in his hands and is also a fellow Lakers fan like us. I just want this kid to succeed his PER in march is something most of our prospects could just dream about after playing so few minutes as big Zu.

Future HOF, feed the big and be happy.

Ugh, watching Kanter not getting minutes in OKC-HOU series made me worry about Zubac.

Modern offensive systems can really exploit slow-footed centers.

I think Jonas Valanciunas would be a better comparison for Zu than Kanter. Val is averaging 23MPG through the first 2 games and 27MPG over the last 4 playoffs seasons.

Kanter doesn't get exploited because he's slow footed, he gets exploited because he has no interest in playing defense.

Looking at some PnR stats, Among players with at least 2 possessions per game, Zu was around 15th among centers, 1.06 PPP. Impressive after his slow start there.

I assume you mean 2 per game, not two total. But yeah, he's got a nice feel for it

Yes correct. I remember looking at his stats when he first started getting real PT and was surprised at how low his PPP were on the PnR despite looking good from the eye test.

Finished in the 78th percentile on post ups/95th percentile on a limited amount of spot ups.

Marc Gasol says:

He moves as fast as a stone but is a good defender.

Grizzlies made a deep playoff run with Z-Bo and Marc starting.

Quality bigs playing defense, can definitely win titles! But the NBA lacks much quality big men.

Zu will be a good one, if he stays healthy. Idk if he will be an allstar, but he will be good.

His floor is a better passing version of Vucevic imo.

Haven't watched a lot of Valanciunas lately. Back then, I remember seeing him as a big with an impressive motor and adequate skills. Seemingly always late on defensive rotations though.
I don't remember Valanciunas being an offensive force.

The reason why I used Kanter as a comparison is because Kanter's a scorer like Zubs.

Sure, Kanter is a better rebounder right now, but I like to imagine that Zubac can easily surpass him defensively. If he manage to do that, he won't just be another scoring big off the bench.

Way too soon to tell if Zubac can be an all-star, but I think there is every chance he will develop into a solid starting center - probably another 1-2 years away.

not sure how that's being a hater... seems very fair

Marc is a fantastic player. A better scoring version of him is HOF

HOF for sure, I'm surprised there is still folks questioning how good Zubac is going to be.

Let's get serious, I really like the kid, his hands and soft touch. He has all the tools needed to play the position, if he is willing to work and his progress and training chart are telling he is, Zubac can have a great NBA career.

I find it crazy talk anyone telling a young player is going to be something, nobody really nows about the future, but I like Zubac's chances to succeed.

Just want to gauge Zubac's value, hypothetically speaking, would you trade Zubac for a lottery pick this year?

Nope. Zubac is an above average lottery pick IMO.

Good to know. Nice parting gift from Mitch. I just hope his development will not be derailed by injury. Lakers will need a lot of things to go their way in order to accelerate the rebuilding process.

I'm not as high on our lottery picks as I'm about those late picks. Clarkson was a good find that has regressed after his rookie season when asked to play other roles. I love Nance and Zubac picks.

When we look at Jokic and where he was taken I can't give Mitch more than 6 overall because we have no player performing like him after so many years in lottery. Dlo is closing the gap to Porzingis, next season I'm going to have a verdict about how good was this pick, it is looking better now than it was last season.

zubac turned 20 this year. rookie year.

jokic turned 22 this year. sophomore year.

jokic last year in 22min avg 10/7 w/ 2.4 assists, 0.6 blocks, and 1 steal.
jokic this year in 28min avg 17/10 w/ 5 assists, 0.8 blocks, and 0.8 steals.

zubac this year in 16min avg 7.5pts 4reb. he's shown some flashes here and there. the next 2 years developing, even w/ him off the bench he should be very solid. the thing about our team is that they are all pretty young, our main pieces and the majority of team minutes are going to these young guys who are all developing and gaining experience. their bodies and skills will get better the more run they get. not saying he'll be like jokic but the potential with the high IQ and overall team ball movement is very promising. in comparison to bynum, bynum liked to bang inside and i see zubac as more finesse. but again, he'll get stronger. untradeable with ingram imo (unless for a top 20 guy)

scary how good zubac can be, especially when he really fills out and packs on some (not too much) muscle. I really do think he can be a 20 PPG scorer in this league, but the defensive end is where he truly needs to be better and smarter. that said, for a rebuilding team we are in a good place with all this young talent we have.
