|
|
Jerry West wants to return, Lakers brass don’t want it to happen.
Lakers Brass convinced they "don't need Jerry West."
So far the duo of Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka seems to have done a good job. They have traded Lou Williams for a first round pick, traded a dead spot in Marcelo Huertas for a flyer young player in Tyler Ennis (who played well), publicly supporting Luke Walton, and signing David Nwaba.
All these are good moves, so you would think the new front office, with an alarmingly large lack of experience, would be smart enough to bring back the greatest executive in NBA history, Jerry West. Well, you thought wrong.
According to Mark Heisler of OCRegister , Jerry West would “love to be asked back”. But Magic and company won’t do it because “They don’t think they need West”
One of the biggest critiques against Jim Buss was his large ego. Well it seems Magic doesn’t lack an ego either (not that it is a surprise). The reasoning is blasphemous (Stephen A Smith voice). This is the man who traded Vlade Divac for Kobe Bryant, which happened to clear enough cap space to sign Shaq. This is the same man who set the Memphis Grizzlies on the path to become one of the most consistent winners today. This is the same man who has been a huge voice in the front office of the team that has been of the one of the most dominant ever over a 3 year span. Even if you don’t think you need him (With their lack of experience they do), having him only helps. What could they possibly have to lose in West having an advisory role with the team? Nothing. On the other end, how much can they gain? Everything.
Hopefully Magic and Pelinka know what they are doing. Hopefully they build a contender. But not bringing in Jerry West; The Jerry West,

So "credit" is more important than winning a ring? Logo is the best in the business and is humble to boot. He's the first one to deflect credit to the people around him. It would be as tragic as choosing MDA over Phil if they let ego get in the way of bringing back a Laker legend and GOAT GM, even just as an advisor. |

It should be about what is best for the organization. It shouldn't be about who gets the credit.
If West can help the Lakers get back to the glory days, then they should consider bringing him back as far as I'm concerned. _________________ ...in my opinion. |

I would think it's a nobrainer to add a guy with his eye and esteem to our FO, but I think Magic wants to be the only voice between Jeanie and Pelinka and doesn't want West debating him on anything. He might be do something smart like tell Magic not to trade Ingram for Kevin Love. |

Too many chef's in the kitchen, is magic's thought process I believe.
Magic wants to take the bull by the horns all by himself.
I think when you get a chance to bring in a person of west's caliber you do it. Magic and West can give and take on ideas and strategy. |

Of course, in this analogy, Magic's expertise lies in making Easy Mac while Jerry West is a retired head chef of a 5-star Michelin restaurant. But yeah, God forbid there be too many chefs in the kitchen. |

Not that it really matters, but I think that Jerry West kind of burned the bridge himself because he said he would leave the Lakers if there was free agency back in his time. _________________ I was an atheist, until I knew Kobe.

yeah, I get that. Magic pretty much came out and said HE wanted to be the final decision maker before Jim and Mitch even got the heave ho. Why would Magic then bring in somebody else to answer to? |

As I said in the other thread:
Magic has just as big an ego as Phil & all the other uber successful people in sports.
If they didn't want Jerry back it's because Magic and/or Jeanie don't want to share the credit.
In that case I'm not high on this regime's chances of success
This is a no brainer move they are refusing to do. They care more about the credit than actually winning |

So is this FO going to add ANY experience at all? I'm not asking for a murderer's row of basketball minds but there are way too many greenhorns upstairs for my liking. _________________ *sighs*

This is 10 times more braindead than jimbo choosing MDA over Phil. At least there was some basketball reasoning behind it.
There is no reason why the lakers shouldn't accept Jerry West in any advising role given the current makeup, especially when Jerry West is practically begging for such a role. |

Maybe Jerry West's body fat% is too high for Magic's liking |

But there are no chefs in the kitchen, only a couple of dishwashers promoted to cooks. Adding Wolfgang Puck to them seems like a no brainer move. _________________ RIP mom. 11-21-1933 to 6-14-2023. |

Started a thread about this not too long ago. Sighs, sounds dumber each time I hear about it. _________________ "He's a Zen master, so he can speak to you, and he doesn't need a microphone; you can hear him in your head, 'Ron, don't shoot, don't shoot.' If Magic's mentality is "I don't want too many people smarter than me in this front office" then the team is already doomed. _________________ How NBA 2K18 failed the All-Time Lakers:

Two neophytes in executive positions have a chance to have one of the greatest come in and help consult them and they say "no?" That type of hubris doesn't bode well. There's really no downside to having a voice like Jerry West around. I don't get that decision. |

How long until Kevin Ding writes a piece about Jerry West wanting to draft Moncrief over Magic? |
