Zero chance he was at 4% body fat.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if body fat % is calculated differently than it was in the 80's, and Magic's unaware of that.

IIRC from other interviews at the time, it was the water displacement test that has been around for decades and still used.

Magic was probably a lot more accurate about it than you give him credit for.

By putting in something measurable, it helps concretize it and puts things into focus. Whether that exact number is the correct one, I don't think that was the point. It was more to set down a target that only elite levels will be accepted, and highlights the amount of work and corresponding mindset needed to achieve that.

Sure, forget that the target might lead to detrimental activities, as long as it is concrete.

As I mentioned in my post -- I think people are getting stuck at the specific number, rather than what that symbolizes. Just to understand your point -- are you against the Lakers targeting to have elite level athletes?

So it is good that it is concrete but because it is really only symbolic? Pick one.

To answer your question, I think it is pretty stupid, because it is an arbitrary number based on probably nothing, and possibly counterproductive to the actual goal of basketball fitness and ability. But it does make that great, "magic is telling them what's what" narrative that is so transparent.

No need to pick one. Let me illustrate using something that different leaders in a company could say:

1. "We need to provide our customers with highly reliable systems" - weak as it's one of those generic statements.

2. "We will provide our customers with world class reliability" - bit better, but what does that really mean.

3. "Our customers can expect that we provide them 99.99+% system reliability". Something operations could definitely rally around. Doesn't mean every system has to hit that, but the bar has been set on what is expected.

I would say the leader of number three has the best chance of success based on how he's communicated his message. I'm sure you disagree as you have an in-built bias against Magic. And that's okay as I'm up front that I come in with an in-built bias to be positive about him and the change he's bringing in

That's not analogous to a fairly arbitrary and potentially unhelpful body fat percentage that all players need to achieve. Unless you're saying that a teams product is body fat levels (as reliable systems would be your analogy company's product).

Actually they are analogous -- reliability in my example is not a product but rather shall we say a feature (e.g. Uber's product is the ride share, reliability is just a part of that overall service). For this discussion, 'athletic level' is a corresponding 'feature' of a larger product of the basketball team.

Fair enough. Not analogous at all, but it's yours so it is, and no big deal.

Yes, some folks here take words to literally missing the message. Those guys make a lot of money and should be in top form.

It is probably consequence of the favorite player with a body fat above the line Magic is setting.

You must be literally the only person with that thought. And for the record, unless your favorite is Thomas Robinson, I'm pretty sure your guy is above the line as well. Hell, your favorite is more than double that line and yet it doesn't seem like you're freaking out.

And yet you try to delegitimize those who hold different opinions by suggesting it's out of some fanhood partisanship. Why?

When we are strictly and exclusively partisan, we assume everyone else is.

Magic gave a specific number. How else is anyone supposed to take that but literally? It's like someone advertising a job paying 90-100k/year and then you show up and they tell you that it actually pays 50k and they never meant for you to take a specific number literally.

How about just saying "we expect everyone to be in better shape next season"? Or "we expect all players to be in the best possible shape next season"? I know this is a weird, relativistic world we now inhabit that is shaped more by feelings than reality, but words and numbers still have actual meanings, and some of us will take you at your word when you say things. While that principle does not apparently apply to politicians, you will be held to what you said in a court of law. So stop the ridiculous Magic knee jerk defenses. Magic is a prone to saying absurd things publicly that he ought not say. This was an absurd thing. Magic has many strengths, but this area is a bit out of his wheelhouse as they say and ought to be left to the people hired to actually do this job.

I guess this is what 7-8% body fat looks like.

to put up a picture of some dude that played in a completely different era of training is silly at best. but I'll let it slide as a joke.

So back to magic's comment. I feel the same way. but now he's sounding like your old coach B.scott. The drill sergeant.

Anytime i see players with a bit too much doe boy on them I cringe. I'm like you're playing a sport all day, every day. you have a world class weight room. they are paying you 100's thousands at minimum and millions on average to just play. I would be in crazy shape if i was a pro sports guy. i was in great shape as a non paid athlete.

obviously they are trying to find guys who are willing to push themselves to greatness. it's a kobe bryant weeding out setup more or less. If a guy isnt about hard work. he will show his true self. or he wont want to sign here as a FA if he isnt already on the team.

I think it's more of a "just because you were a great player, doesn't make you a great talent evaluator or President of Basketball Operations." Coupled with listening to him talk basketball over the years, color me underwhelmed. Hope it goes well, but it's not like he's exactly set up for success either way.

Exactly. And for many of us, myself included, we haven't liked Magic the retired player/bball analyst/Twitter extraordinaire long before he had an official role with the team. Far different

My point is more so of not even giving the dude a chance, like it or not our future is kind of in his hands. If Magic does good then your favorite team does good. Just like the Okafor supporters didn't give DLO a chance from day one, some of you guys aren't giving Magic a chance.

Magic's 7-8% comments getting analyzed just like DLO celebrating a summer league game winner...

The league doesn't test for HGH, right?

This term of excellence is cool and all but 7/8% body fat doesn't indicate anything-- some UFC fighters are well into the teens and can fight at for 25 mins straight which is obviously more taxing--- hell Conor is only at 9% but is an elite level athlete. Body fat percentage isn't the end all be all.

The number doesn't make sense but I understand the message. His first offseason and he clearly wants to set the tone that there is no room for mediocrity... it's part of getting us out of this tanking/losing mindset...

My thing is why not just come out and say "we want the players to be in the best physical space they've ever been in". However, this is Magic. Feel like we're going to hear a lot of dumb (bleep) he says this summer.

This whole thing reminds me of Coach Carter
