That's not really fair. He was on a crappy Celtics team and then they drafted Rondo and traded for Garnett and Allen. (Don't see how that constitutes him forming a superteam -- his GM simply collected a lot of good players around him, which is what every GM tries to do).
After the run ended, the Celtics wanted to rebuild and they traded him to the Nets. After that contract ended, he sensibly left. He played for the Wizards a year and then joined his old coach at the Clippers. Would't call that "jumping from team to team."
So I don't see where he's been a hypocrite. |
I agree with you active... However. Nothing is worst than retiring a clipper |

Quote: | Pierce gives thanks after playing final game, says he's 'ready for a new chapter'
The legendary playing career of Paul Pierce reached its end on Sunday at Staples Center, with the Los Angeles Clippers getting bounced from the postseason at the hands of the Utah Jazz in Game 7 of their opening-round matchup.
In a piece for The Players' Tribune prior to the start of the 2016-17 regular season, The Truth announced his intention to retire at the conclusion of the campaign, writing how "it's time to move on from the game of basketball."
Hours after the Clippers' defeat at Staples Center, Pierce took to his Twitter account to offer thanks to those who supported him throughout his 19 seasons in the Association, including his family, teammates, and former coaches. |

He had a good career. Will be a HOFer. Good luck to him. I'm sure deep inside, as a kid from Inglewood, being a Boston great has to just eat away at him a bit. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

He's actually from the bay. I knew a couple of his teammates from freshman year at Inglewood High and apparently most of the team hated him then. By his senior year though he was really good. Never wowed you with athleticism like Baron Davis did at Crossroads but he was skilled. I remember reading that he wanted to retire in LA but as a Laker. _________________ Alltime lineup: Magic | Kobe | MJ | Hakeem | KAJ |

i remember when they won it all in 2008, he proclaimed himself the best player in the league. guy reminds me of an insecure wanna-be superstar.
glad we took the finals away from him in 2010. _________________ Dominating every day. |

Quote: | Celtics will retire Paul Pierce’s number
Paul Pierce, who finished his playing career with the Clippers, said he’d sign with the Celtics to retire.
They’ll also retire something of his.
Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck, via CSN New England:
He’s the last number 34 ever for the Celtics.
This was beyond obvious, but it’s always nice to hear someone in charge state the plan.
Pierce is the greatest Celtic since Larry Bird. Even if Kevin Garnett was better at Boston’s most recent peak, which culminated in the 2008 title, Pierce earned credit with years of service before Garnett and Ray Allen arrived. Leading Boston to the 2002 conference finals is an underrated part of his legacy, which includes 10 All-Star appearances, an All-NBA second-team and three All-NBA third-team selections and the 2008 NBA Finals MVP. Pierce is the Celtics’ all-time leader in 3-pointers, free throws and steals, and he ranks second to John Havlicek in points.
After spending 15 years in Boston, Pierce ushered in the Celtics’ next era by facilitating a trade to the Nets, who sent major draft considerations to Boston. Pierce had his moments with the Nets, Wizards and Clippers, but he’ll always be remembered as a Celtic – with his jersey in the rafters serving as a deserved reminder of his impact in Boston. |

Paul Pierce will go into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame a Celtic. (And yes, there is no question he will make it.)
While he spent the past few years of his career in with the Nets, Wizards, and Clippers, it is his 15 seasons as a Celtic that defined his career. So on Monday, the Celtics signed Pierce to a contract so he could officially retire as a Boston Celtic.

While he took a couple of shots at the facility Monday, he is not playing for the Celtics this season, this is simply the classy way to help a legend retire.
Pierce was the Finals MVP in 2008 helping lead the Celtics to their last banner, plus he is a four-time All-NBA player and a 10-time All-Star. With his old man at the Y game, he averaged 19.7 points per game over his career and 5.6 boards a night.

Celtics to retire Paul Pierce’s number after Cavaliers game in February
The Celtics already said they’d retire Paul Pierce’s No. 34.
Now, we know when.
Celtics release:
The Boston Celtics announced today that they will retire Paul Pierce’s No. 34 after a mid-season game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday, Feb. 11
After? That’s apparently in response to a new rule that penalizes teams not ready to play after a 15-minute halftime. These ceremonies can drag on, and nobody wants to cut Pierce short. I wonder whether this will start a trend of number retirements coming after games. |
