|
|
Magic Johnson said Kobe Bryant is helping the Lakers evaluate their own players
"He is also still planning to work out with their young core."
Quote: | How badly the Los Angeles Lakers want Kobe Bryant to help their organization is hardly a secret. Lakers President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Rob Pelinka have both spoken about it multiple times, although Bryant has always said in interviews he’s much more open to a behind-the-scenes role.
That’s fine with Johnson, although the type of backstage assistance Bryant is giving the Lakers might be a little bit unexpected.
"We're happy that Kobe wants to be a part of the Lakers organization,” Johnson said during an interview on ESPN Los Angeles. “Right now we're just picking his brain about the players, because Kobe played with a lot of the guys that we have. We're picking his brain about some of the things that he sees that maybe we could do.” |

Hopefully Kobe can inspire, teach and project his approach to the game to the next generation of Lakers.
Early on I'm sure the guys who already played with Kobe will benefit the most because they sort of know what to expect.
This will be a great team-building moment for the young core.
The "Mamba Mentality" is priceless. |

If Kobe would suit up for the prospect workouts, that would be amazing. |

Josh Jackson punches Kobe in the face during the 1v1, and Kobe will be like, "draft THAT guy". |

Having Kobe study footage -- the way he has done on his own for DECADES -- and then give input on either the opponent scouting or player development aspect of the team would be interesting. |

I did find it a little odd that people wanted Kobe to only work with Ingram.
Kobe needs to work with everyone. They need it. |

Kobe knows more about hoops than pretty much anybody on the planet, so it's great to have him around.
He does need to adjust his expectations when it comes to that shark mindset though. He can try to hone that instinct in the Laker players that are amenable. But he needs to understand that not everybody is able to think and feel the game like Kobe, and it's probably pointless to try to change their mental makeup significantly. |

Waiting for the Kobe haters to come tear this thread up
No seriously though, I think it's a plus. His evaluation from an "off the court" perspective is much more objective than his "on the court" perspective. He isn't going to play with these guys, so he is really going to look at each player and what they bring to the team. |

I think it's because the perception is that Ingram has the highest ceiling on the team. He also seems to be the most willing to be coached. |

^^^Could it be that he has been recovering his body so he doesn't waste it on meaningless, rebuilding seasons? And his plan is to come back during the 18-19 season and build to his legacy the way Jordan came back? I mean, by then we would have PG13 and someone else right??? Nah, but cool thought. |

Isn't the Kobe the anti-team basketball? I'm sure he's "hyper-competitive" but his me-first mentality would not go over well with what we're trying to build here. Kobe is Kobe. His iso's worked because of his godly athleticism which no one on the Lakers have. We're teaching our young guys to GET OPEN and PASS the ball, play TEAM basketball. Kobe could go to the Knicks and teach Melo how to play iso better. _________________ LeGoat! LeMazing! LeGend!

Sarcasm? I'm sure you've seen Kobe play and you know his style. Imagine if everyone on this team starts to think shoot first, we'd be in a lot of trouble. _________________ LeGoat! LeMazing! LeGend! |

You do realize that Kobe won't be playing right? You really believe that Kobe will teach these players to be selfish? |
