Wanted to know what you guys think about artists that have no background in certain cultures trying to incorporate their musical styles. The most notable example right now is the "Despacito" song with Justin Bieber. At first, I was really happy when I heard the song. It seemed like Bieber was genuinely interested in the culture and was trying to broaden his style. After hearing about him performing the song live and saying, "I don't know the words, so I'll say Dorito" for his Spanish part, Bieber seems to be culturally appropriating here with no genuine interest in the culture he is borrowing from outside of the money it will earn him.

What do you guys think? Is this cultural appropriation? Embracing different cultures? A little bit of both?

Justin Bieber is manufactured, period. Just like a lot of other artists on the radio.

If it's purely a musical question you're a little late to the party.

Google Walk this Way by Areosmith/RunDMC. Or just the band UB40....I could go on an on... Vanilla Ice anyone?

Based on you're musical reference Id wager this was before you were born.

Either way, the cultural barriers in music really don't exist.

I don't get it. They used a traditional recipe to make burritos. I get recipes from the internet every day.

Hormel canned chilli, chopped onion, shredded cheese and hot sauce.

Wrap and toss in a hot skillet to get the tolrtilla nice and crunchy.

Burrito heaven.

When I was a kid, the meat at taco bell was called chilli. They had this thing called a chilito...I've been trying to create my own since they removed it from the menu.

Yes, there's a little agression when I think about it. Totally know how the chicken fries fans feel. Exept, they got them back and I'm still using Hormel chilli and stolen taco Bell hot sauce.

How come Southern white folks don't get offended when Kid Rock pretends to be one of them to make money? Dude was a rapper from Detroit and then suddenly started ripping off Leonard Skynard and the white trash culture ate it up. Do they not understand he's a character?

Because southern white folks attention span/ memory is shortened significantly by eating kechup on their spegetti.

I hate the term cultural appropriation. It seems like a PC term to me.

A line is drawn where someone attempts to imitate another culture (regardless of the medium used) in a way which denigrates/mocks that culture or reinforces a negative stereotype. If someone simply takes something from another culture that they like and makes it their own, I don't see the problem with that. It's nothing new. Almost everything we have comes from some form of "appropriation" if you want to call it that. That's, historically, how this world came to being. We should all be a big melting pot, so someone claiming or imitating something from your culture does not diminish who you are any more than you doing the same. Someone can't steal your identity from you.

I reject that concept as false information and continue to believe tortillas are mexican.
