Does it mean you have to be IN there by that time, or OUT of there by that time?

It means different things for different restaurants. There is no global answer for this. If they let you in and serve you, they're open.

Man, there is an obvious option that is missing!

The closing time is when they no longer allow new customers IN to the restaurant.

It's just like a store.

That's the second option.

Not really. You could still be waiting for a seat.

I'm saying the doors lock at closing time. If you're in, you're in.

As a part owner of a restaurant, I keep the lights on if customers are still eating. I'm pretty cool about them staying after hours but if they're chilling out just chatting an hour after we're officially closed, I might give them a hint that I gots to go... While rare, some people are just inconsiderate...I have a life to get home to too.

#4 does not make sense, where did you get the "30 minutes" from?

Why not 60 minutes? Or 15 minutes? Or 20? or 43-1/2?

Most places cut off the senior discount early.

from my experience, at a chain place it means you need to be seated by closing. The hours already take into consideration there could be diners still putting in orders past closing time but it wont keep the kitchen staff from being upset (the movie Waiting immediately comes to mind).
Because of this I try not to visit a sit down restaurant any later than 30min before closing.

You're well versed on things senior. I'll ask for your advice in the future. What home are you residing in? Who's keeping you abreast of our entitlements?

Let me guess: CC, under a tight time budget for finals, schedules a very late dinner after hours of study. When he arrives, prior to the posted closing time, he is refused service.

100 hundred percent. CC only makes these ridiculous threads when something happened to him and he's looking for validation that he is in the right.

What grown adult asks what closing time means? Isn't it obvious what it means? It means it's time for you to go out go out into the world. Turn the lights up over every boy and every girl, CC. One last call for alcohol so finish your whiskey or beer. And, remember: every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end.

But as soon as he is gone, the restaurant seats the next dozen people who show up.

Hey, if the restaurant say "ALL YOU CAN EAT," I'm staying until I'm done. I give a (bleep) what staff say. "ALL YOU CAN EAT," son!

Why do you think he's asking about restaurant closing times? He wants to know what time he gets off work...

And yet you look down on waiters, waitresses, and restaurant managers?
