Well the German band NEU recorded this song in 1974 and even though they were not a punk band, it sounds awfully punk to me...
Who invented rock n' roll? Who invented grunge? You can go down the list with this. You Really Got Me by the Kinks was sort of punk, but they weren't a punk band. I've also seen that song cited as part of the origins of heavy metal.
Anyway, I'd probably go with AY on this one. Iggy and the Stooges were probably the first real punk band.
I loved Iggy, and partied with him and his band one crazy night. (bleep) the brain damage, it was worth it.
Early punk was raw, driven by strife or stark pessimism, with its roots emanating from the likes of Patti Smith and Lou Reed. The influence of Iggy was that he gave music a raw, energetic simplicity, that was more or less an updated version of where late 60s rock had left off. I saw it as a protest against mainstream music, particularly the horrendous quarter beat-driven, heavily synthesized muzak that the conformist clones danced to in discos.
In my estimation, early The Who where one of the earlier proponents of punk, or proto-punk as some have referred to them. Townshend's riffs were simple, raunchy and to the point. His lyrics, with Daltry's voice, captured the angst of British youth in the 60s. Their performances were raw, energetic and exuded the rebelliousness of kids trying to defy music industry establishment.
Personally, I love The Ramones, and I think they were the best punk band. Their songs are kick ass and in your face, but they also have a Beach Boys-like melodic component to them. They are very low key sophisticated.
I loved the Ramones too, I'm bummed I never saw them live, I did see the Clash on their London Calling tour and that was pretty freakin' awesome as well.
Back in the early 80's I also saw Fear, the Dickies, The Cramps, Sisters of Mercy, The Jame, Dead Kennedys, Theater of Hate, Specimen, Social Distortion and a slew of other punk bands my brain has trouble remembering.. _________________ “Always remember...
