I think they should do a Part 4 of this documentary about chapter 3 of this rivalry in 2008 and 2010. The 2010 finals was maybe the best I've seen live. I'm sure it helped the more experienced Laker fans exorcise some of the remaining demons from 1984. _________________ Lakers 49ers Chargers Dodgers |

Pretty epic job, I must say. Really brought out the hate. |
I saw that. I got a credit too (not as NPZ obv). I left it up to them, but I didn't expect they'd actually do it. They really put a lot of thought into those. Usually they just credit NBA Ent and leave it at that. Now I wanna find out who had that 60s footage. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

I had no idea Bill Russell was traded from the St Louis Hawks during the '56 draft as the 2nd pick to Boston.

had things been different and Russell decided to play as a Hawk in St Louis, I wonder if Boston would have done well without him. The 1960s NBA would have been different. The rivalry between the Celtics and Lakers likely would not have happened.
Also, if there's any consolation about the early rivalry between the two as Lakers fans, it's good to know a former Laker Slater Martin, who was part of the first NBA dynasty, the 1950s Lakers, was a part of the 1958 St Louis team that BEAT the Russell/Auerbach led Boston Celtics for the championship. _________________ Pancho's Happy Bottom Riding Club |

Man that 1984 Finals was intense and to follow it up with 1985.
Those two Finals really helped the popularity of the NBA. |

And gave the other one away via mistakes. Ah well. Lakers had more talent, but Smelts had a much tougher home court advantage in that 100 degree rat trap than any other team in the league, period. At least at that time. Chicago Stadium and SA/Utah/Detroit and a few other venues were krazy and loud-A.F., but Boston had a tangible advantage with the heat, fans on top of the court, and the generally nasty Bostonian attitude. Type of fans that gave constant abuse to visitors. That can wear on a team over a long series. Forum was great and it doesn't get the respect that it deserved back in those days. We got the standard media treatment featuring Lakerfans as if they were all rich celebs and West Coast flakes. Boston Gahhden was a tough place to win for anyone and the W/L numbers verify that. Minus their games at Hartford, CT, at the Gahden, they went 47-0 in 86 and 49-3 in 87 (1 RS loss there to Lakers, 2 playoff losses). _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

He also got Cousy out of a hat in 50/51ish. Team that drafted him (the Tri-Cities Blackhawks) folded and Cousy went into a dispersal draft where he literally fell into their lap. Auerbach said about him that he was a dime a dozen little guy, so that shows how magnificent his scouting talent was for all the hype he got. He was advised about Russell by a friend of his out on the West Coast. It sounds sometimes like Red personally picked him out of a crowd because he was such a genius. His friend who saw Russell a lot told him to try to get him at all costs. Meh. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

IIRC, Russell was demanding $25K a year in salary as a rookie, which the Hawks thought was outrageous, so they were looking to move him. Boston was a perfect trade partner because "Easy" Ed Macauley was a St. Louis prep and college icon, as well as an All-Star, so even though everyone knew Russell would be great, St. Louis thought they were getting equal value. _________________ On Lakersground, a concern troll is someone who is a fan of another team, but pretends to be a Lakers fan with "concerns". |

I think all of these well done documentaries are great.
But as soon as the Lakers hit that magical 18 and are truly alone
and on top of the NBA world, then all these documentaries will have
to have a Lakers slant or bias. That's what makes 2008 so hard to take.
I look for to 17 and 18 in my lifetime and all the trappings as fan that comes
with it.

Great as always. Those 30/30 series are always top notch.
I had no idea (or maybe amnesia by choice) that the Lakers could've been 3-0 vs Boston in the Finals during the 80s had it not been for James Worthy's lazy moronic pass in game 2. Would've been huge going back to LA with a 2-0 lead. |

thing that pisses me off most is that jerk coach not putting Wilt back in in game 7 in 1969, you flip that series and we lead in titles 17-16 |

The weirdest bit was when they raised the awkward issue of being one of the black players on a team mostly perceived as being the "white" team. He laughed and said he was "Whitey" then. Weird. |

I thought it was balanced. If you're a Celtic fan, you could say that the show barely touched upon the first 7 Celtic/Laker showdowns and it really only focused on the ones during the 80s.
But I loved the dual narration from Ice Cube and Donny Wahlberg. Each giving a biased take rather than one narrator trying to be completely neutral. |

He got released because of that. Guy hated Wilt and Wilt's "type". OLD old school type. The OOOOOOOLD school. Like 50s crewcuts and 4-inch fold on the bedsheets and no jelly donughts, etc. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

The part where Dr Buss spoke to a reporter after we won it in 85 got me a little misty-eyed. This was very well done. |

The Lakers vs Celtics games, even regular season games were so intense then.
When the Lakers lost in 1984, I honestly was depressed for weeks and I was not alone. For the players? It had to be excruciating as the Showtime Lakers should have been 3-0 vs the Celtics and the Celtics know it. _________________ Love, Laker Lanny |

Yeah but he made up for it with this pass to Magic in Game 6 to help seal the championship in 87.
