I might be hitting the road to drive to Houston. About 1500 miles each way from where I live and thinking of hitting that in one shot with my brother splitting the drive.
never did anything like this so just wondering how doable does this sound.
Also I'll be driving my commuter tank 2012 camry with 130K miles that has never had an issue with it.... should I go with a rental instead? is it okay to run the engine like this with no more than a few gas refill stops?
any other tips or suggestions? _________________ (bleep) Kawhi

130k on a newer well-maintained camry sounds doable for a trip like that but why take the risk? If you're a costco member you can get a week rental from avis/budget/alamo/enterprise for $130-ish and drive someone else's car into the ground, possibly on eco mode to save a couple of bucks on gas. _________________ "All wars are civil wars, because all men are brothers."

Ok thanks I'll see if I can find a good rental deal. How about the fatigue of driving nonstop? Most I did was a 3 hour trip each way to pick up a relative and that was broken up with a 1 hour rest once I arrived.. _________________ (bleep) Kawhi |

Should be okay with highway miles on the car, given that your car is in good condition.
But why not just go for the rental where you dont have to worry about adding those miles on your car and lets be honest, you can beat the crap out of it.
also, is there any reason you have to try and make it a non stop trip? If you have time, why not just chill and take in some of the local spots |

Did a road trip to Seattle/Vancouver from So Cal in my 20s. Stopped in Sacramento and Portland for a bit to eat, freshen up. Wasn't too bad. _________________ KOBE |

That stretch between the Bay and Portland is brutal, even when you're young...how long was "a bit"? _________________ "All wars are civil wars, because all men are brothers."

About an hour in Sac at a Denny's. In Portland I happened to drive pass Rose Garden while some outdoor hoops tournament was going on. I took a cat nap, then went to watch some hoops and eat. I'm not gonna lie it was middle of the night driving from Bay Area to Portland. It was late, late night/early morning driving through the mountains. It was a full mooon and slightly cloudy...I saw a Lake over the side of the road at one point and it was pretty harrowing. I want to say it was Shasta Lake? I was WIDE awake at the time out of just sheer nervousness with that part of the drive. It was definitely in the Mt Shasta area on the 5. It was mid morning by the time we hit Portland. I drove with 2 friends but both idiots couldn't drive manual so it was basically me. I have to say the foliage in the Pacific NW is absolutely stunning. _________________ KOBE |

If you've never done this I will ask if you are a person who rides bike a lot
Why?
Your peripheral vision that keeps you safe in the city may (bleep) with you on the highway in a car
I have done many 3000+ mile round trips. I got worn out because I didn't want to run over any animal that approached the side of the road.. lol.. I could see them from 200 yards
stay hydrated
bring LOTS of tunes
use cruise control..
don't race
be quick but don't hurry
never overeat |

Damn that's impressive. Agree @ greenery in PNW. Between redding and Portland, you can't see ground thru the trees. _________________ "All wars are civil wars, because all men are brothers."

Depends on if you like driving and if you don't get microsleep. Concentrating for more than 15 minutes seems to be very difficult nowadays... |

I had to make a trip from the east coast to LA, which is over 3,000 miles, and I had to do it after emptying out an apartment full of furniture. The UHaul rates were outrageous. My solution was to buy an old, used van (the price of which was cheaper than renting a UHaul truck), and then selling the van in LA after I emptied it.
That old van did roughly 1000 miles a day. Assuming your Camry is in good shape, good compression, recent oil change, tires without excessive wear, you should be good to go. |

business to attend to with a rental property. It would be 4 of us but only 2 have license to drive (ghetto ppl always getting their license suspended). Motive would be to drive there as soon as possible while spending as little time as possible at stops.
I was thinking splitting the drive in ~5 hour splits between me and my brother while timing it where I do the bulk of the night time driving.
All moot now because that plan fell through, im flying in by myself. I always interested in doing a "fun" road trip though. _________________ (bleep) Kawhi |

lastly, its getting hot out their. your cold is old with a ton of miles. your water pump may be about to blow anyway. all you need is one last 300 miles + 100+ degree heat to set that puppy off. your thermastat could be about to go out. imagine being stuck in arizona on your way their or back...in 112 degree heat at 2pm in the afternoon and the sun aint going down til around 8pm. NO thanks... rental it is. |

For what it's worth, I had a 99 Jetta at the time and it was 3 years old when I took it for the drive. She never drove the same again. Don't know if the drive did her in or the fact that that model was a notorious piece of crap. _________________ KOBE |

You don't want to get stranded at night time in West Texas. Between El Paso and San Antonio there isn't much of anything. |
