NBA to host televised award show June 26

The National Basketball Players Association hosted a televised award show two years ago. It largely flopped, and the union announced its awards on social media last season.

Now, the NBA is trying its hand at a televised award show.

NBA release:

The NBA announced today that the first-ever NBA Awards Show will take place in New York City on Monday, June 26, 2017. Televised exclusively by TNT, the show will feature current and former NBA players, coaches and celebrities.

The league will honor the:

Most Valuable Player
Defensive Player of the Year
Rookie of the Year
Sixth Man Award
Most Improved Player
Coach of the Year
As is, this is scheduled for after the Finals (beginning June 1 and ending by June 18) and after the draft (June 22). But when this idea was discussed a couple years ago, part of the plan was pushing back the draft and free agency.

By June 26, most fans are celebrating a championship or already focused on the offseason. How many people will be excited about regular-season awards at that point?

I’m not totally convinced this show will pay off, and the schedule is only part of the problem.

In previous years, the league announced award winners one at a time early on various days throughout the conference playoffs. People debated the selection throughout the day. The player was honored at a press conference and/or before his game that night or a day or two later. Each award generated a ton of exposure for the league, and collectively, that exposure built over a long period of time.

Now, that all gets folded into a single day.

Maybe TNT paid enough for broadcast rights to justify the NBA’s choice. The league will certainly cash in more directly this way.

But the risk of creating an apathy around the awards is high enough that I’m not totally convinced this is a wise move.

Bye.

Drake to produce, host first NBA Awards Show this June

The NBA saw the NHL and NFL do it to great success, plus if the NBA’s television partners can make a little money off it all the better.

This year, the NBA’s postseason awards will be handed out June 26 at a first-time NBA Awards show, which you can watch from the comfort of your own home on TNT.

And it will be hosted by Drake, who also will produce the show. You remember Drake as the unofficial host of last year’s Toronto All-Star Game, primarily the designated hugger when the players were introduced. He’s also the Raptors “global ambassador.” Oh, he also has a few fairly successful records, and is good friends with a host of elite NBA players. Who he will probably hug at the awards show.

Drake dropped the knowledge that he would host the show while taking part in the podcast of another friend of his, Kentucky coach John Calipari. We would all kill for Drake’s contacts list. Here’s what Drake said, with a hat tip to SLAM for finding this and transcribing it.

“I’m actually producing and hosting the first annual NBA Awards this year. I get to take the reigns on it.

“The ESPYs let me do great things, and I thank them a lot for that. Usually award shows sometimes are a bit restricted. But they let me do a lot at the ESPYs, so we’ll just expand on that concept.

“I love hosting. I love being in a room full of iconic, legendary people that I look up to and having that pressure of having to make them laugh and enjoy their evening.”

As he noted, Drake hosted the ESPYs in 2014. If you watch the ESPYs, feel free to put in the comments section how he did. He also hosted Saturday Night Live twice, and he’s second behind Timberlake in the best combo host/musical guest rankings of recent years. He’s pretty good there.

We’ll all be watching on the 26th and get to see how much he hesitates before calling out Russell Westbrook or James Harden for MVP.

I guess… I work in "the biz" and I find award shows horribly uninteresting. The way the NBA has announced ROY, DPOY, MVP, etc. all these years has worked for me but...

(I'll probably end up watching it LOL)

Because they are but when I was a kid I loved them then I grew up and realized what politicized popularity contests they all are.

Ive forgotten there even was an nba season

Doing this this late is the dumbest thing ever. It should at the lastest be after the first round of the playoffs. Ideally it should be before the playoffs

Especially since these are regular season awards. You don't want performances in the playoffs affect how people view the regular season

This award show the reason why they never announced the regular season MVP and other awards during the season? It all makes sense now. Bad timing though, not much people will care now since the Finals are over.

I would assume the timing would be odd for the players. Having an awards show in the middle of playoffs would be rather dumb.

Sure, but isn't about one week after the regular season when they used to announce the awards?

the whole thing is a little weird. a show is weird. doing it this long after the season and playoffs is over is weird. different times i guess. on reddit someone pointed out how weird it was that we still dont know who the mvp is, true.

Yeah, but I assume they are flying all the players to the the awards show versus handing it out in a rather low key ceremony in the past. Theres a reason why what they are doing now in the middle of the playoffs wouldn't work.

So far I've not taken this off mute. I definitely prefer to just announce the winners and move on with it...

Looked at the list of awards....looks like they just added a couple of made up awards just for the TV show. Have a feeling this will end up like the MTV awards show, most of them will be meaningless.

Rookie of the Year
Most Valuable Player
Sixth Man Award
Coach of the Year
Most Improved Player
Defensive Player of the Year
Executive of the Year
Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year
NBA Sportsmanship Award
NBA Cares Community Assist Award

Fan Awards
Best Style
Assist of the Year
Block of the Year
Dunk of the Year
Game Winner of the Year
Performance of the Year
Best Playoff Moment
