The guy is obviously in the top 5 already. If he leads the Lakers to beat the Warriors and then wins the Finals - he will be the greatest player of all time.
You remove - the eastern conference argument
You remove - he can't beat the Warriors
You restore the Laker Brand. They tie the Celtics in championships.
If and it's a major if - he pulls off a ring in LA - he will have his jersey retired by 3 separate franchises and he will have won rings with three different franchises. The hype globally and in LA would be insane.
That's the upside of the Lakers pitch. We're not even talking off court opportunities. We're in no position to turn down Lebron - you have to check that ego at the door. |

I have Lebron #4 all time right now.
1. Kareem
2. Magic
3. MJ
4. Lebron
5. Wilt _________________ Nobody in the NBA can touch the Laker brand, which, like the uniform color, is pure gold. |

An unprecedented BS suspension was needed to do so, or it would have happened the same outcome of this year: 4-1 Warriors |

1) Magic Johnson
2) Michael Jordan
3) Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
4) Bill Russell
I'd say LeBron is inbetween 5th and 8th. I can't decide between him, Wilt Chamberlain, Kobe Bryant and Larry Bird. |

In no particular order:
MJ
Kareem
Kobe
Duncan
Magic
Shaq
Bird
Olajuwon
Wilt
Bill Russell
There are already 10, so James is not top 10 but top 15 at best...
Also, he will not win anything with us , unless he play for the minimum, and he is able make other superstars take a paycut to play here.
Make no mistake: the only way James beat the Warriors ( unlesss they have big injuries) is joining Kawai Leonard, Popovich and other superstars/good system players in S. Antonio. Since he is the biggest ring chaser of all times, I expect him to do it the next season. |
My opinion on your list:
MJ--no argument
Kareem--no argument
Kobe--this is LG, but if I'm being unbiased, Kobe simply hasn't been as efficient
Duncan--Nah, Duncan's role was reduced for the latter part of his career
Magic--although his career was shorter, I can't quibble with this
Shaq--No, his peak was too short
Bird--No, didn't affect the game like LeBron does, plus his career was relatively short
Olajuwon--His top-level peak was awesome but occurred for far less time than LeBron's has, LeBron has him in MVP's, titles, basically everything
Wilt--fair argument, given his utter physical dominance
Bill Russell--fair argument, given his titles and MVP's
For me personally, I can only make an argument for 5 guys ahead of him. I would have LeBron ahead of Wilt and possibly even ahead of Russell. I'd have MJ, Kareem, and Magic as my top 3, in that order.

And if Curry didn't suffer an injury a little while prior. But nobody remembers these things when we consider someone's legacy. |

This is all subjective of course but I can't argue with this. However I have Lebron passing Wilt in my top 5. I have Kobe and Russell fighting for #6. Larry probably 7 or 8. You don't agree with Kobe, Shaq Olajuwon and Bird being above James, so I will answer about them.
Kobe: efficiency is not the only thing to consider, not the most important at all ( and Kobe was more efficient on FT, if not on FG). Being a true winner (with a far greater killer instinct ) and more skilled is a lot more important.
Shaq: are you kidding me? his peak started in his rookie year...
Olajuwon : he won two championships fair and square, and with a lot less help than James.
Bird : I hated the Celtics with a passion, but Bird is a better shooter, passer ( quality over quantity) and better winner than James will ever be: he had that killer instinct that would never had allowed him to lose series like 2011 vs Dallas, for instance.
Edit : I forgot Duncan, who has five rings and was still beating him in 2013 at 37 in a legendary game six . If he didn't have Kobe on his way to the Championship every year, he could have won 8-10 rings.

We get LeBron James . . . the same LeBron James we get if someone lists him Top 5 All Time or someone else lists him 15th on the list of best players since 2000. Arguing about where James ranks isn't going to change the reality of what he actually brings. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

He's probably just playing all this up for publicity. Even if he just flirts with LA, he'll get his hype train going. Last night's appearance at Summer League most likely had more to do with signing new clients to his agency. |

Yep, why would a Lakers team coming off its 4 worst seasons in a row in franchise history have interest in a top 5 player of all time? That would be absolutely ludicrous. Ludicrous, I tell you!
Look, I get it if some people don't like him personally. But he's not going to sign a 4-year deal, folks. Even on a slight decline, this guy is going to be great. You can make the case that he's still the best player in the league. Kobe was still awesome at 34, right up until the very moment that he blew out his Achilles. LeBron is more of a physical beast than Kobe was and has more of an advantage because of his size. To put it another way, LeBron doesn't have to work as hard at scoring his points than Kobe did around the same age; at that point, Kobe had become a contested shooting mid-range maestro, which isn't easy to do. Barring a serious injury, there's no reason that LeBron wouldn't be awesome for 2-3 more seasons.
I do not understand how Laker fans could think that getting such a historically great player who is still dominating would be a bad thing for the on-court product, all personal feelings aside. I suppose you could try to craft an argument that it would be a bad thing if he were to demand that we trade off Ingram and/or Lonzo, but that's not what was just suggested above. What was suggested above was that signing LeBron wasn't worth it because he simply won't be that good in a year. And that's a bunch of hogwash, if you ask me. Oh, and of course LeBron would be expensive. You know who else is expensive? Kyle Lowry. DeMar DeRozan. Mike Conley. Marc Gasol. Al Horford. Blake Griffin. DeAndre Jordan. Gordon Hayward. I mean, those are nice players, but they are nowhere near LeBron's caliber, even a LeBron at 33-34. I will say it again: this man is a legendary player.
It's also worth pointing out that getting LeBron would instantaneously restore all of the Lakers' cache. I think we're making good strides towards getting that back; having LeBron automatically would restore us to contender status, it would greatly enhance the brand, and it would actually increase the value of the franchise, too. With that back, even if LeBron walked in 2-3 years, we'd still presumably have the second max free agent that signed, plus our young dudes, so we wouldn't be left in a position where we'd have to tear it all down and rebuild. (And if the 2nd max free agent also left, then we'd have cap space to rebuild around the young guys.) |
People are seeing all these illusions. Yes, I agree LBJ will make the lakers relevant again. Yes, it will at least get the team back in the playoffs. But that is just that. At the end of the day, we aint winning anything with LBJ, even with another superstar like PG joining us, period. You know why superstars like to come to LA in their late career? Because they know they will become irrelevant to winning soon, and they need to end their career in some place that:
(1). willing to give them huge money for a diminished superstar; and
(2). benefit to their post career businesses.
People have to wake up and realise the reasons behind LBJ may want to sign with the lakers. If he cares about winning, he would not choose to leave Cleveland given that team is for sure coming out from the East. Granted, you may argue that LBJ is still better than most stars out there, but if I am cutting a cheque for a player, I would rather want to have someone who wish to play for a cause other than money. |
