Triple-Double…Again… Lonzo Ball is dropping triple-doubles like it’s no big thing. Tonight, he finished with 16 points, 12 assists and 10 boards.

The question you ask before the game, after the game and every time he touches the ball while the clock is running is “What will he do next?”

He keeps you on the edge of your seat.

The Lakers seemed to control the game from start to finish. It was anyone’s ball game, for sure, but between Ball, Blue and Kuzma, the steady play kept them from having any lengthy dry spells to lose ground to the Cavs.

Ball dropped the triple-double. Blue provided some steady scoring when they needed it most. And Kuzma brought his typical energy and that three ball to take the win over the Cavs, 94-83.

Let’s get the next one.

Ball -- -- He didn’t have his shot and they tried to make him a scorer as best they could. Some nice attacks to his left to draw defenders before kicking it back behind him to his bigs for scores. They pushed him right, where he hit a floater or still worked the ball to teammates. It wasn’t fast paced game, but you could see the contagious passing within the half court sets. There was a sequence where we passed the ball 6 times in about 10 seconds (Ball had three of those!) and the last one resulted in a wide open three for Kuzma. That sequence there shows you that he will be the catalyst for this team regardless of the situation. That’s not to say they weren’t getting out in transition and pushing tempo still with success. Ball had back-to-back long-distance feeds over the D to Kuzma after made baskets for scores. “They’ve learned their lesson and guys are getting out and he’s hitting them now,” Buechler said. The ease tonight with which he put up the triple-double is a little eye opening (that’s coming from someone who was a big fan all last season). The last three games, he’s averaging 21 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds. He was struggling with the shot, but still was making things happen in every other part of the game. They ran him too long in the second half and that impacted some of his shooting. He was looking dog tired. After a brick where he didn’t get back in transition they finally sat him with 6 minutes left for a breather. He said he had to get his wind after the first couple of games since he hadn’t played in a while (he’s moving all over the floor). You will see one highlight in this game over and over, a pretty reverse layup where he changed hands in air, glided under the hoop and went high off the other side of the glass. That was a thing of beauty. A little sloppy at times with some of the turnovers (there were a variety, most described below). The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-20 shooting (2-10 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 12 assists, 7 turnovers, 5 steals and 2 blocks in 34 minutes. He was a +12. The Action: He attacked and kicked to Zubac for the jumper. He got tied up trying to attack in transition. He scored a layup off the breakaway with Kuzma. He changed speeds on a baseline drive, switched hands in air and reversed around defenders. He got tapped on a step-back baseline fade in the post. He missed a deep three off the double drag screen. He hit Kuzma for a long wing jumper in early offense. Way short on a three on a kickout. He missed a layup on a drive he should have finished with ease. He lobbed to Bryant on the break for the dunk. He threw a pass away but swiped it back in transition and hit Wear for three. He attacked and kicked to Bryant for the open jumper. He kicked out to Thomas for the three. He lost the handle on a pushout, turnover. He took a pass from Blue and pitched it back to him in early offense for the three. He attacked with speed, drew the D and kicked it back to Zu for the dunk (drew two defenders with some speed). He blocked a jumper from behind. He missed a short turnaround. He missed a floater. He had 4 points, 8 assists and 7 boards in the first half. Second Half: He attacked right off the high screen and swished the floater from the midrange. Sweet 65-foot pass to Kuzma in stride after a made basket and Kuzma finished the tough one at full speed. Another one after a made basket to Kuzma next time down for the dunk. He swished a wing three on a kickout from Blue. He jumped a passing lane with speed a few seconds later, swiped it and took it for the uncontested dunk. His kickout was swiped. He got tapped on a three that rattled out. He attacked the paint and kicked it to Kuzma for the three. He swished a three in early offense. He missed a sideline three. He bricked a step-back three. His pass in transition was picked off (he tried to sneak over a player not paying attention, really didn’t push tempo). Wide left on a deep three and he didn’t get back in transition to give up a dunk (looking tired and they finally sat him midway through the fourth). Back in, he missed a tough turnaround. Great hands stripping a ball loose on a drive. He missed a three in early offense. He kicked out to Caruso for the three. He hit Kuzma on the pick and pop for a three next time down. Late foul for FTs, he made both.

Kuzma -- -- “My expectation was to just come in and try to dominate and just try to impose my will on every single guy I play,” he said. Love he said that. Larry Nance, you listening? (Larry’s got the skills but sometimes he doesn’t approach the game with that “impose my will” attitude). You notice when he’s on and off the floor. The team misses his energy when he sits. He’s quickly learned that you run the floor with Lonzo and he will get you some easy buckets. “It’s hard for a lot of forwards to run with him,” Lonzo said. The duo teamed up again for some long passes and counterstrikes off made baskets. Zo also finds him on the perimeter for the three ball (he sank 4-8 tonight…and is shooting 38% from three, according to Bres…I’m not taking the time to verify). A couple misses were airballs, but his shooting is legit. One complaint might be that we struggled a bit securing the defensive glass as we gave up 15 offensive boards. Thought he could have done better there. Some great passing sequences again from him. Another excellent game. Really curious to see where he fits in the rotation and how much of his game translates this year. His aggressiveness is key to that success. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 7-14 shooting (4-8 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 1 turnover, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 1 foul in 30 minutes. He was a +15. The Action: He drained a wing three off a swing pass. He knocked the ball loose on the perimeter, tracked it down, spun and hit Lonzo for the layup. He slipped a screen, took a pass and hit Zubac with an interior feed for the layup. He sank a long pull-up two from the wing in early offense. He sank a baseline three on a kickout. He barely hit rim on a tricky challenged three. Back in and he airballed a wing three. He missed a wing three. Second Half: He stripped a big in the post to force a turnover. Dumb pull-up runner in transition, seemed out of control, not close. He attacked left and hit Zubac for the jumper. Great job running after a made basket, Ball spotted defenders chasing him and hit him with the 65-foot pass for a tough lefty layup at full speed. He sprinted again off a made basket and Ball hit him for the dunk next time down. He drew FTs trailing the break, he made both. He drained a wide open three off a kickout from Ball (great passing sequence). He airballed a three out of a timeout. He missed a finished on the screen roll. He swished a three straight away on the pick and pop with Zo.

Zubac -- -- On the positive side, I thought his defense started to look better. He was anticipating things faster which makes up for slower feet. He used his length well at times to block shots or use verticality to contest. He was blocked himself a few times around the rim and struggled to hold the ball at times. Not much success in the post against Tavares. I like when we set him for those little midrange shots and hope to see more of that. He’s still not looking comfortable out there yet, but he is paying attention to Lonzo and trying to run on occasion. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-15 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 10 boards (3 offensive), 1 turnover, 2 blocks and 4 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He missed a 19-footer to start the game. He sank a baseline jumper off the kickout from Lonzo. He fumbled an interior pass away. He scored a layup off the interior feed from Kuzma. He missed a bank in the post. Great job holding verticality to smother and prevent a layup. He missed in the post, stayed after it and was fouled on the reverse attempt, he made one FT. He was blocked on a layup. He swatted a layup on a switch and controlled it. He dunked off the drive and dish from Ball. Second Half: He was blocked on a lefty hook. He sank an 18-footer off the dish from Kuzma. He missed the floater on the roll. He drew FTs taking contact after grabbing a bounce pass under the hoop, he made both. He wanted the foul on the missed dunk attempt off the two-man sequence. He couldn’t hold the pass from Zo under the hoop, turnover. Great switch on the perimeter, he stayed with his man on the drive, then blocked the pull-up jumper (not great footspeed, but great anticipation in that whole sequence). He dunked off the drive and dish from Caruso. He was blocked on a layup.

Blue -- -- “We’re here to win it,” Vander said. He mentioned he’s trying to lead the team since he’s experienced. This was one of his best games. He was composed, took over the game when we needed it from him. Very poised, very methodical, no selfish play. Repeat this, please. That’s exactly what you want to see from him. Efficient and effective tonight. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-11 shooting (1-3 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal and 1 foul in 30 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: He attacked in transition and muscled in a layup. He attacked off the three line in early offense, spun and powered in the And-1 off glass with his left, he made the FT. He was blocked on a layup attempt. He hit Bryant with a drive and dish for the layup. He attacked next time down and drew FTs at the rim, he made both. He sank a quick-fire three off the pitch out from Ball. Second Half: He missed a turnaround on iso. He attacked off the three line and scored a layup. He blew past his man next time down and scored a layup to his left. He missed a wing three. He sank a pull-up 17-footer. He missed a three up against the shotclock. He iso’d, attacked right and scored the layup.

Thomas -- -- Not a great game. He sank one of his five threes. Of all the starters, he was the only one with a negative in the +/- and that scored the same on the eye test tonight. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-6 shooting (1-5 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He threw a post entry away. He missed a wing three. He hit a three in early offense. He missed a wing three then gave up an And-1 on the other end. He swished a corner three on a kickout from Lonzo. He missed a three straight away. He airballed a step-back three in transition, uggh. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Bryant -- -- Not sure why he’s not setting up on the pick and pop more. Get into that space and the ball will find you. The chemistry isn’t quite there yet. Ball had a turnover on the two-man game with him as he started to roll and Ball got caught in the air not wanting to pass because Bryant’s head was turned. They did team up for a nice lob on the break. Love the “Gimme that (bleep)!” shotblock he had in the second half tonight. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-3 shooting to go with 4 boards, 2 turnovers, 1 block and 1 foul in 13 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He threw down a lob from Zo on the break. He powered in a layup off the interior feed from Blue. He got outmuscled on the defensive glass to give up a possession. He hit a 17-footer off the kickout from Ball. Second Half: He iso’d in the post and stepped out of bounds, turnover. He swatted a layup with some choice words.

Caruso -- -- You figured he’d probably be one of the candidates for the two-way contract. As of today, he’s now the Lakers 16th man. “I’m excited to be a part of it,” Caruso said. Not a pretty game from him, but he does well in those ugly sequences, mixing it up, hitting the floor, etc. “By the way I play hopefully you can tell I’m out there just trying to win,” he said. Those little things -- the steals, the blocks, making a great pass or getting an extra possession on a hustle on the offensive glass (he had 3 offensive boards tonight) -- that stuff helps win games. Not a great offensive game, but he did hit a big three tonight and had a few timely passes. He’s got to keep progressing and improving his game to earn some minutes at the next level. The Stats: HE scored 7 ppoints on 2-6. The Action: He missed a floater on a probe. He kicked out to Kuzma for a three. He dove to the floor a loose ball on D and threw it off his man to gain possession. He crashed the offensive glass and tapped it out to a teammate to regain possession. Great recovery to challenge his man from behind and force a miss. He lost the handle for a dunk the other way. He missed a deep three. He faked a behind-the-back pass and had his layup goaltended. He spotted Wear cutting weakside and hit him for the layup. He missed an open wing jumper. Second Half: Nice dump off in transition to Kuzma trailing to setup FTs. He knocked a ball loose on a drive. He crashed the glass, missed the point blank tip-in, but got it back and drew FTs, he made both. He hit the floor again chasing after and pushing ahead a loose ball while drawing the foul. He attacked off the three line and fed Zubac for the dunk. He sank a corner three on a kickout.

Wear -- -- He sank a couple perimeter shots and had a couple of layups. Serviceable summer league minutes. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-8 shooting (1-2 form three) to go with 4 boards (2 offensive), 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He swished a pull-up 22-footer. He missed a three straight away. He swished an open three in transition. He scored a layup in early offense. Second Half: He got tapped on a baseline pull-up. He choked a layup. He missed a drive, got it back and scored the putback.

Can we just cancel baseball season and start the NBA already?

Love the new guys but i m rooting the hardest for our own Steve prefontaine - Caruso.

Diving on the floor as DB mentioned and bouncing it off the defender. Those are the plays an arena goes nuts over.

Re: lakerdynasty - I'm sure the poetry will come soon enough Looking forward to it.

What I like most from this SL is that in Ball, Caruso, Kuzma, Bryant, Zubac, Ingram, Nance.... We have a bunch of good shooters and passers. That's what makes the enjoyable and fun basketball possible.
If they can add defense too, then we can even expect some wins.

Making an old man cover summer league back to backs after I'm still recovering from another 82-game tank season.

Best thing I saw was that lonzo pick and roll pass to zubac

Looked so smooth. One of the concerns was lonzo in the pick and roll and it looks like he'll be a natural at it

Thanks again for the excellent write-up DB. I watched tonight's game with an interest in seeing whether or not Ball could replicate what he did last night on the second leg of a back-to-back. Man he sure looks like the real deal.

And Kuzma - wow. It's almost like, if Lonzo touches that ball before Kuz shoots it, it's going in.

Fun game to watch! Just close enough. Before tonight, the Cleveland summer league squad was unbeaten and was winning because of their defense, but Lonzo had that defense rattled to the core.

Best of all this Summer League stint isn't over yet!

Love that quote from Kuzma. Awesome and refreshing to hear that from a late round pick. He said he thinks he's the best player on the floor when he goes out there, him reaching for that ceiling seems to be elevating his play. Good point on this mental dynamic with Nance

Lonzo has the only 2 triple-doubles in the summer league in the past decade my jesus

Bryant not getting more Pick/Pop opportunities is a real shame.

Let's hope. Zubac needs to join them because he's going to make me cry with his crappy summer league so far.

If he doesn't start picking things up and also show in the preseason he may be out of the rotation as we go small behind Lopez, who will gobble up minutes.

Wish BI could have gotten more run with Lonzo. I want to see more of those passing sequences between the two and more of BI in transition.
