Trump on the need for a "transparent" border wall (for real):

Excerpts From Trump’s Conversation With Journalists on Air Force One

Q You were joking about solar, right?

THE PRESIDENT: No, not joking, no. There is a chance that we can do a solar wall. We have major companies looking at that. Look, there’s no better place for solar than the Mexico border — the southern border. And there is a very good chance we can do a solar wall, which would actually look good. But there is a very good chance we could do a solar wall.

One of the things with the wall is you need transparency. You have to be able to see through it. In other words, if you can’t see through that wall — so it could be a steel wall with openings, but you have to have openings because you have to see what’s on the other side of the wall.

And I’ll give you an example. As horrible as it sounds, when they throw the large sacks of drugs over, and if you have people on the other side of the wall, you don’t see them — they hit you on the head with 60 pounds of stuff? It’s over. As crazy as that sounds, you need transparency through that wall. But we have some incredible designs.

But we are seriously looking at a solar wall. And remember this, it’s a 2,000 mile border, but you don’t need 2,000 miles of wall because you have a lot of natural barriers. You have mountains. You have some rivers that are violent and vicious. You have some areas that are so far away that you don’t really have people crossing. So you don’t need that. But you’ll need anywhere from 700 to 900 miles.

Former Soviet Counterintelligence Officer at Meeting With Donald Trump Jr. and Russian Lawyer

No matter how hard I try, I cannot figure out why a former and likely active counter-intelligence officer would be at a meeting to discuss baby adoptions, let alone innuendo regarding dirt on Hillary. Why was he invited, and who invited him? There's only one obvious answer.

And so begins the Putinocracy

Quote:
Republican donor kills himself after talking about working with Russian hackers to get Hillary Clinton's emails

Quote:
A GOP donor and opposition researcher who said he tried to work with Russian hackers to retrieve deleted emails from a private server used by Hillary Clinton, has died in a suicide, according to public records cited in a Chicago Tribune report.

Peter Smith killed himself days after an interview with The Wall Street Journal in which he said he sought out Russian hackers to try to retrieve some 33,000 deleted Clinton emails and pass them to Michael Flynn, then a campaign adviser to Donald Trump.

Death records from Minnesota show that Smith, 81, died in a hotel of "asphyxiation due to displacement of oxygen in confined space with helium" on May 14. Smith was found with a note that said there was "NO FOUL PLAY WHATSOEVER" regarding his death.

I'm starting to get a nagging feeling that he may not be completely sane. Maybe I'm just overthinking things. Oh hell. I'm just a paranoid liberal.

So the White House got emails from the public commenting on their concerns about the so-called Election Integrity Commission -- many concerned about their private information being made public. So what did this White House do? They released the people's emails WITHOUT REDACTING THEIR NAMES, EMAIL ADDRESSES AND OTHER PERSONAL INFORMATION. That means all the pro-Trump yahoos out there can harass their fellow voters. Just. Completely. Disgusting. Whether it's vindictive in nature or "just" incompetence, it's a complete farce. This is actually on the White House website.

It looks like Russia's hacking campaign never stopped (not that I thought it did). Still waiting for the White House & GOP to acknowledge the ongoing problem and do something about it. ::not holding my breath::

Private Email of Top U.S. Russia Intelligence Official Hacked

Quote:
On Tuesday morning, a hacker going by the name Johnnie Walker sent a group email to an unknown number of recipients claiming to have a trove of emails from the private account of a U.S. intelligence official.

“The U.S. State Department officer’s email has been hacked,” the email announced, and included at least two years’ worth of personal emails from the private Gmail account of a State Department official working in the secretive intelligence arm of the State Department focusing on Russia.

The Russia Conspiracy Goes to Court: Two DNC donors and a staffer are suing the Trump campaign for working with the Russians to leak their emails. Will they win?

Quote:
The prevailing question in the legal commentariat this week has been, “Shouldn’t there be a law against that?” How can there be nothing on the books that we can use to tag the president’s campaign team for their secret meetings with foreign emissaries bent on throwing the election to Donald Trump? Writers, including myself, have been casting about for federal criminal laws that might sweep in such conduct with at least middling success. But what if that was the wrong question? What if the right one is, “Shouldn’t there be a lawsuit?” Well, now there’s a lawsuit.

Late Wednesday, a group of lawyers wrangled by United to Protect Democracy, a nonprofit government-watchdog group made up of former Obama staffers, filed suit against the Trump campaign and Trump’s longtime adviser Roger Stone. The complaint in Cockrum et al. v. Trump for President & Stone alleges that they conspired to release emails stolen from the Democratic National Committee last summer in ways that materially harmed three private people. In other words, the suit begins with the uncontroversial premise that real people were harmed in real ways by the campaign and that a court might be a good place to find out precisely what happened.

The theory is that Putin had kompromat (blackmail material) on the Russian cyber people, therefore leverage over them.

It might be tough to measure damages in that one. I'm skeptical about that lawsuit being given a green light.

Yeah, I posted an earlier article about that meeting. Rinat Akhmetshin attended that meeting with the Russian lawyer, and his presence raises two red flags:

1) He is allegedly a former (and likely active) Russian intelligence agent.

2) He is also a lobbyist who has been trying to get the US to drop the economic sanctions on Russia.

An obviously disturbing scenario arises as to why he is there. Is he brokering a deal with the Trump camp to have the sanctions lifted, in exchange for dirt on Hillary?

This new story is about two more unnamed people in addition to Akmetshin.

And the answer to that question is pretty much self-evident given who we are dealing with.

Quote:
In an appearance on NBC’s MTP Daily, Trump’s campaign manager at the time recalled traveling with the candidate on June 9, 2016, for a Trump rally in Florida.

"What I do remember on that particular day was that was a day that Donald Trump was doing a rally in the state of Florida, so I traveled with the president that day," Corey Lewandowski said July 13, 2017.

Was Trump in Florida on June 9, 2016, the day his son, Donald Trump, Jr. and others met with a Russian lawyer in New York?

No.

Trump was in New York. Trump attended a fundraising lunch at the Four Seasons in New York before spending the rest of the day at Trump Tower.
He also engaged in a Twitter feud that day with Clinton.

That morning he took to Twitter and called Clinton "Crooked Hillary," saying his Democratic rival would be a "disaster" on everything from the economy to the military to health care.

The barbs continued throughout the day, with Trump lashing out at President Barack Obama over his endorsement of Clinton.

"Obama just endorsed Crooked Hillary. He wants four more years of Obama — but nobody else does!" Trump tweeted.

Clinton replied that afternoon, urging Trump: "Delete your account."

Just in case anyone missed that little meeting the freaking Attorney General spoke at the other day.

Quote:
In a closed-door speech to a right-wing legal advocacy group, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said religion is under attack, according to text of the speech the Department of Justice appears to have released to the conservative website The Federalist on Thursday.

Earlier this week, Sessions spoke to the Alliance Defending Freedom, which was designated an “anti-LGBT hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center in 2016, at their Summit on Religious Liberty in Dana Point, California. The event was closed to reporters, and both the Department of Justice and the Alliance Defending Freedom declined to provide a copy of Sessions’ remarks to ABC News.

The Department of Justice did not respond to ABC News’ request to confirm that the transcript provided to The Federalist was indeed a copy of Sessions’ remarks, but Buzzfeed’s Dominic Holden tweeted that “a person familiar with the situation tells me the Justice Dept DID provide Sessions’s remarks to The Federalist.”

In the remarks, as published by The Federalist on Thursday, Sessions praised the group for its "important work" made necessary by a "changing cultural climate" that has put the "future of religious liberty" in doubt.

“The cultural climate has become less hospitable to people of faith and to religious belief,” Sessions said. “And in recent years, many Americans have felt that their freedom to practice their faith has been under attack. This feeling is understandable.”

Sessions told his audience that his office, at the behest of President Donald Trump, will be issuing new guidance on how to interpret and apply federal religious liberty protections, suggesting that the U.S. government could change the way it considers cases dealing with the separation of church and state.

“The government would not take sides, and would not get between God and man … Any review of our nation’s policies must understand this powerful constraint on our government and recognize its soundness,” Sessions said. “Yet this understanding in no way can be held to contend that government should be hostile to people of faith and is obligated to deprive public life of all religious expression.”

Sessions’ speech comes just weeks after the Supreme Court has agreed to review the case of Colorado baker Jack Phillips, who was found in violation of the state’s nondiscrimination law after refusing to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple in 2012. The Alliance Defending Freedom is representing Phillips in the case.

According to the civil rights watchdog Southern Poverty Law Center, the Alliance Defending Freedom is a legal advocacy group founded by Christian right leaders in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 1994 that “specializes in supporting the recriminalization of homosexuality abroad, ending same-sex marriage and generally making life as difficult as possible for LGBT communities in the U.S. and internationally.”

For Southern Poverty Law Center President Richard Cohen, the speech was a tacit endorsement of a group with extreme anti-LGBT views.

Hopefully, Sessions gets swept up in Mueller's investigation. He was on Trump's transition team and was present for many Russian meetings. Also lied about it on his forms and lied about it at his Senate confirmation hearing. His disgusting history with regards to civil rights was well known when his GOP buddies confirmed him.

This was written by right-wing conservative Republican columnist Jennifer Rubin:

Washington Post: The GOP’s moral rot is the problem, not Donald Trump Jr.

Quote:
The key insight from a week of gobsmacking revelations is not that the Russia scandal may finally have an underlying crime but that, as David Brooks suggests, “over the past few generations the Trump family built an enveloping culture that is beyond good and evil.” (Remember when the media collectively oohed and ahhed that, “Say what you will about Donald Trump, but his kids are great!”? Add that to the heap of inane media narratives that helped normalize Trump to the voters.) We now see that, sure enough, the Trump legal team (the fastest-growing segment of the economy) has trouble restraining its clients, explaining away initial, false explanations and preventing self-incriminating statements. (The biggest trouble, of course, is that the president lied that this is all “fake news” and arguably committed obstruction of justice to hide his campaign team’s misdeeds.)

Let me suggest the real problem is not the Trump family, but the GOP. To paraphrase Brooks, “It takes generations to hammer ethical considerations out of a [party’s] mind and to replace them entirely with the ruthless logic of winning and losing.” Again, to borrow from Brooks, beyond partisanship the GOP evidences “no attachment to any external moral truth or ethical code.”
Quote:

Indeed, for decades now, demonization — of gays, immigrants, Democrats, the media, feminists, etc. — has been the animating spirit behind much of the right. It has distorted its assessment of reality, giving us anti-immigrant hysteria, promulgating disrespect for the law (how many “respectable” conservatives suggested disregarding the Supreme Court’s decision on gay marriage?), elevating Fox News hosts’ blatantly false propaganda as the counterweight to liberal media bias and preventing serious policy debate. For seven years, the party vilified Obamacare without an accurate assessment of its faults and feasible alternative plans. “Obama bad” or “Clinton bad” became the only credo — leaving the party, as Brooks said of the Trump clan, with “no attachment to any external moral truth or ethical code” — and no coherent policies for governing.

Jennifer Rubin is a joke. In early 2016 she was slamming Obama and Kerry on the Paris Climate accords, and now she's done an 180 because Trump pulled out. She may be right about this, but she has no credibility whatsoever. She's just a rabid anti-trumper, and someone who enabled the right to get to this point. She's as much to blame as anyone.
