I never trusted those rinky dink carnival rides. Wonder how often they get inspected versus the rides at say Disneyland or Magic Mountain? |

They have one of those at Cedar Point. A bit safer, perhaps, since it's emplaced. Still didn't want to get on it because of how terrifying it looks. _________________ "All wars are civil wars, because all men are brothers."

I couldn't tell if it hit something or the cars just detached and the force of the swing just tore it off. _________________ "Suck it up. Don't be a baby. Do your job." - Kobe Bryant |

from watching the video and listening to the sound. it sure looked like that one car was hanging a bit too low and actually came in contact with part of the rides base. at least from that angle and the sound it seemed like thats why it broke into pieces. but i could be wrong. |

I watched the video but it was pretty blurry and inconclusive....couldn't tell if it hit something or if that was the sound of the metal just giving out and the entire thing caving away. |

I took my son to one of those carnival rides, called Freak Out. It's very similar to the Fireball ride, and actually a bit more dangerous. I could feel the base of the structural frame tipping off the ground during the ride's violent pendular motion (just like Fireball). I have no idea how that ride ever passed inspection, I doubt that the state regulators know what to look for, other than the flip-down shoulder restraints. |

I'm from the Cbus area and sick of seeing everyone so comfortable to post this. Praying for the families and those traumatized by it. Wish these "first" people would go back to doing their ice bucket challenges to praise themselves and just post the article if you want people to be aware, I've seen like 25 or so today. |

And that's the point that needs to be taken away from this. The fact that there were reportedly multiple inspections of this ride and it still failed so catastrophically indicates there's a flaw in the system.
Rides such as this go under tremendous wear and tear even as permanent installations. You can set a "norm" for rides that are permanent - same ride, same place, nothing has been dismantled and re-installed, and no human factor in that process. But when these types of rides are disassembled and move around to new locations on a repeated basis, the failure factor increases tremendously. Carnival rides are something where there's no baseline for a standard. _________________ You thought God was an architect, now you know

My opinion is that the current safety inspections were probably not going to catch a malfunction. There was probably metal fatigue somewhere on the ride that was too small to catch using the current procedures, but stressed enough caused a catastrophic failure. |

Carnys aren't known for being the most detail oriented guys either. Those rides have always held an element of fear for me, my brother and I rode them all like Madmen as kids though...any UCLA Mardi Gras veterans here from back in the day? _________________ Love, Laker Lanny |

I love rollercoasters but have never trusted carnival rides. my gf always tries to convince me to get on them and she was successful one time. we went on this medium-sized roller coaster and I knew it was the last time she would convince me when they tied up my "seatbelt" (a piece of rope) and had to push our car to get the ride started. |
