Quote:
Without Deng, Randle and Clarkson, the Lakers would have about $76.6 million to spend. Removing Deng could open the door for Los Angeles to either keep Clarkson (under contract at $12.5 million for 2018-19), Randle (who has a cap hold of $12.4 million as a restricted free agent next summer) or free agents in Lopez or Caldwell-Pope.

The Lakers could instead look to stretch out the final two seasons on Deng's salary over a five-year period (at $7.4 million per season), which would put the team at about $69.2 million in space (without Clarkson and Randle).

While Los Angeles would have Bird rights for Lopez—and the ability to pay him handsomely—unsigned, his rights take up a max slot and obstruct the team's ability to spend elsewhere.

Basically the only variable out of the Lakers' hands is JC. Deng can be stretched and Jules renounced.

If that's the case, why not get that handled now so the price for getting rid of JC doesn't go up as we get closer to 2018?

If I were the Lakers, would take care of as many non-controllable variables now so if push comes to shove, you do the things that are in your control (i.e. stretch Deng, renounce Jules).

I hope we don't come to a point where we need to give a positive asset along with JC just to trade him off our cap books.

With Lonzo/KCP as the starting backcourt, i don't see how JC's value increases as the season goes along sans injuries.

Someone suggested swapping Deng + 2nd round pick for Asik and Ajinca

I would totally do that trade if we can't find much luck in dumping his contract

It seems like Chicago Fans are open to the idea of Deng coming back to the Bulls, I think that's a potential destination if we decide to move on from Deng but once again we are gonna need to add sweeteners just like the Raptors did when they dumped Carroll on Brooklyn. but if it's at the cost of potentially getting 2 max guys next summer then that is good enough reason.

Fans don't make the decisions and the Bulls want more than Clarkson to take Deng

Would Clarkson/Deng/2020 1st be enough? I would add Zu if we can get Lopez in the deal and it saves us money for 2018 FA.

Not next year, but we already have a budding max level player in Ingram who will almost certainly demand the max in 2020, just two seasons after next. So it appears to be George, Ingram, and James as our 3 max players in 2020, the last of which I would suspect would be on a contract year at age 36... but since we're playing this game, who else will become a FA that summer? A 30-year-old Kawhi Leonard.

That Pig will need a lot of lipstick. It will take probably trading Randle or Kuzma and a first rounder to get rid of Deng.

Jules is up for an extension. So a team trading for him will likely have to consider paying well over 30m+ to keep Deng/Jules in 2018. I don't think there's any team that will do that.

Is it even possible to sign 3 max players under the current CBA?

Technically yes, if all 3 players are on the first tier max which is something like 25m/year. But that never really happens.
