Glen Campbell, "Rhinestone Cowboy" singer, dead at 81

Not a country fan per se. But he was an icon

I never listened to the full song but I remember watching high school high a few times as a kid and had the brief segment of when that song plays ingrained in me.
And then ironically on Family Guy Peter Griffin sings the song the exact way I would have tried to recite it

I knew he had Alzheimer's or something like that. The younger generations won't understand what a immense cultural icon he was at one point. Wichita Lineman, Gentle on My Mind, Galveston, By the Time I Get to Phoenix. Starring with John Wayne in the original True Grit. The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour. Rhinestone Cowboy actually came out when he was past his peak. He gets pigeonholed as a country singer because of his twang. It's more accurate to view him as great pop icon of the sixties.

RIP

Yep. There was a time when Campbell was as visible as just about any star is these days. Always making appearances on the variety shows, guest cameos on TV shows and the like. When I was a kid, I thought he was an actor who also happened to play music. It was later that I realized he was a really gifted song-writer/musician.

I forgot that Glen Campbell toured with The Beach Boys at one point. I didn't know that he was part of The Wrecking Crew.

Until I saw The Wrecking Crew documentary, I only knew him as a solo artist. I know his Rhinestone Cowboy days are not classic country, but I still live that sound.

He played with the Doors too. Galveston was one of the great Viet Nam era songs, I always wanted to visit there. Until I did.

When I first moved to Los Angeles in 1972, I remember walking on Hollywood Boulevard, just a block or 2 west of Vine, and seeing Glenn Campbell talking to a couple of what I assume were record company executives. He was the first famous person I remember seeing after moving to Los Angeles. I was awestruck. Hard to believe he's gone. I used to watch his tv show every summer.
