Just saw that Tommy Hawkins passed at 80 years old. He was one of the first LA Lakers and played with West and Baylor. I remember him as a broadcaster when I was growing up. He always seemed like a genuinely nice man.

Good man from the old, old Laker school, but always had a contemporary voice and knowledge. He kept up with the league for all the subsequent decades after he retired. He saw much of our faint/fading blue uni era 60s history such as the hard plane landing that felt like it was gonna be a tragic one. Very affable and friendly radio/TV personality. He spoke with ease, kinda unlike Kareem and more like Coop or someone. Heard him talk Lakers on drivetime shows like Big Nasty. He was the gentleman who wore his Lakers uniform as the team finally won in Boston in 85 Gm 6. Rest in peace, brotha. Glad you got to see the Lakers beat those green bastards 3 times. That entire generation is steadily leaving. Chick, Hot Rod, Hawk, Wilt, etc.

Hats off for The Hawk, Elgin's backupfor several years here in Los Angeles. Tommy was a fine defender who couldn't hit a barn wall with his jump shot, but his best contribution was all-around activity and effort. This glue guy's two part Laker career nearly book-ended the Baylor/West years. He was a part of the Elgin consortium late career, when the team split into a Wilt-versus-Elgin social club.

I liked Tommy's work as a sports news guy just as much.

I never saw him play in person, but I certainly know his career. I remember him most as a broadcaster, in the days of REAL sports talk radio, with the likes of Bud Furillo. Sports talk and Lakers talk in Los Angeles in now AWFUL. When Tommy, Bud, et al were on KABC and other stations, it was great. RIP, Tommy.

RIP Mr. Tommy Hawkins, a real Laker and true gentleman.

Wore the uni with pride and distinction. The story of him putting on his old uni for Game 6 in 1985 is one of the all-time great moments in Lakers lore.

Godspeed, and thanks.

When the Lakers finally beat the Celts in 1985, I remember the clips of him whooping it up in his Lakers uniform at age 49.

RIP Tommy

When I first moved to LA, I thought he was a former Dodger. It was years before I figured out that he was an ex-Laker who worked for the Dodgers in PR.

RIP. Mr. Hawkins.

Tommy was a good guy and was well-liked by the Laker organization.

When I was working in LA for CBS, I had heard that Tommy had been encouraged by Chick to pitch himself to the Lakers for the open sideman (color) role, way back when Keith Erickson ended up getting the job.

Hawkins declined. Too bad for us Laker fans but I think Tommy wanted more to do.
