Trading Deng is certainly possible if we attach some pretty assets.

The hard part of trading him with some nice and juicy assets is that you have to take back salary which is where the big problem is.

You might get back a better player with a shorter contract but that doesn't solve the problem.

Maybe you get a guy back who also stinks but only has 1 year left and you stretch that guy to lower the salary cap impact. Maybe he is owed less. That would seem like a possibility.

Most likely he gets stretched next year

Agree on stretching but maybe Randle beasts and is moved at the deadline with Deng for an expiring stiff and pick?

they are done and he didnt play cause of injury.

Deng on basketball court, is not going to provide any value. Specially when guys like Randle, Nance, Kuzma, ingram all need mins ahead of him

heck i would play a lineup of
Clarkson
KCP
Lonzo

before i put deng at the 3. pf is super crowded as well

Deng had surgery in May to repair a pectoral muscle.

IMO he' basically done.

Lakers Face Upcoming Deadline On Stretching Luol Deng’s Contract This Summer

Quote:
The deadline to stretch Deng’s full $54 million is August 31. The Lakers would still owe him his salary but Deng would be paid over the next seven seasons at $7.7 million per year. After August, Los Angeles cannot stretch Deng’s salary for the 2017-18 season, but they can spread his final two seasons ($36.8 million total) at $7.4 million over five.

No reason to stretch his contract this year. Next year is when we need cap space.

Isn't Deng what Hillary Clinton meant by deplorables? As a person, he is a high quality guy. As a $18 million dollar stiff, he is a deplorable (contract).

I hate to break it to you guys (and myself since I agree with the general opinion in this thread) but Deng is getting minutes to start off the season/preseason.

If he does good, he'll be our backup 3/4 most likely. If he plays like he did last year, then he should get comfortable being glued to the bench.

Pio; it seems there is not a big dollar difference between stretching him now or next season. We need the money next season not this one, so who knows.

I guess it comes down to if the FO think we need a Vet/mentor/glue guy on the bench this season. And unless they have a "likely" trade partner, which is very unlikely, then it'll all be about do we need "expensive glue"; IMO...

No way we stretch him this season. We wait until 2018 and stretch 2 years instead of 3, huge difference.

I wouldn't stretch him either. He could possibly traded later or just assigned a seat on the bench. It's a hard pill to swallow either way but it is what it is.

That would be a dream come true. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like it's all that serious. ( Not wishing ill will towards the guy, just enough that he needs to retire, so he can play with his kids and enjoy the rest of his life)

I might sound crazy but Deng is more valuable then some of the players on the roster.. people just don't like him cause of his contract but if this guy comes back hungry next year with a new attitude then he might surprise us.

The point to me is, I don't want to see him play. The future is Nance, Kuzma, Ingram and Randle. That's four forwards I'd rather see on the court than Deng. There's not unlimited playing time, so unless there's a rash of injuries, I'd rather see him sit.

The players I'd rather see on the court are those who are getting us W's. Playing time should be earned.

Deng is going to get mins early... ahead of Kuzma for sure.

With Lonzo running the show, the ball will be moving and ideally it benefits Deng enough where teams see he still has something in the tank.

It's doubtful but maybe just maybe he shows enough to warrant some offers + future picks for cap relief.
